With that freshman adjustment, it’s all about how quickly you adjust to the speed of the game and the length of the players on the court,” Jordan said. “We know he has good vision and passing ability. Kids come in as freshmen like Trey and they don’t know what to say from a leadership standpoint, so they’re just listening and that’s where the other guys come in and show them the ropes.”

14 weeks 4 days ago I think this is overly

I think this is overly critical.

I too was a student during their reign and attended both FF trips. To say the losses were disappointing is one thing. But to say they didn't live up to expectations is to my mind beyond harsh. We all knew they were going to be good - but the freshman year was far better than what the preseason expectations were. The soph year certainly had high expectations. And while they didn't bring home the championship, it's not as if they choked and bailed in the second round or anything. They were there at the very end and ended up perhaps one miscalled TO away from winning it.

Despite not actually winning the title, I consider those two years as some of the most successful in program history (putting aside the unrelated stuff that had nothing to do with what happened on the court).

I'm not suggesting you do it... as what you've already done is great and it will be interesting to follow as we go thru the season. My point exactly... As good as we've looked, I just can't help but feel it's been against subpar competition. I hope to be proven wrong in the next few weeks. But until that happens, I'm thinking we're probably overrated.

I think it's IU or Minny...

I'm starting to worry a bit that we haven't really been tested yet. So, it might be a little more open than it currently appears. I mean, not to be too negative - but who have we really beaten? NC State? Kstate? those are prolly the best wins on our record. Pitt is looking more and more like a middle of the rd team at best. None of the above are really marquee matchups to my mind.

Don't get me wrong, I love the way we're playing and Trey is on another planet. But ultimately I don't think we'll have a really good idea where we stand relative to the rest of the conf for at least another 2-3 weeks. Just so many good teams this year.

Lol true story - the Zingerman's crew painted our house when they were just starting out (that was their day job at the time). Then my dad used to bring them their bread every day from Farmington until the daily order got to be too much for him to stick in the back of the Taurus.

30 weeks 4 days ago I'm not advocating for adding

I'm not advocating for adding them... but to take issue with them on their quality as a school seems a somewhat specious argument. US News (yes, yes, only one measure, blah blah) has them at #58... Ohio is at #56 and 6 other Big 10 unis rank lower than them. Notably, our newest member Nebraska checking in at #101. Oh by the way, Maryland is an AAU member... something the rest of the conference shares... except for Nebraska.

Again, I'm not trying to justify taking them by any means. Personally, I don't think they bring *that* much. But again, knocking them on academic grounds seems pretty weak.

Actually you don't need to have a @umich.edu address to sign up and associate yourself with UM.

I'm with you. Does this make everyone on the US team 'American' except for Wondolowski (half Native American)?

1 year 6 weeks ago I'm all for the general idea.

I'm all for the general idea. However, I personally would prefer to stay away from Facebook or LinkedIn as the hub. Facebook is too crowded and creates too much noise. In the past maybe I'd have been more OK with LinkedIn, but lately I've found that the walls there are starting to crumble a bit. I get hit with more and more cold-calls asking if I'm hiring or looking to hire. I feel like it's becoming less and less just my network of connections, rather a tool for recruiters.

All that said, when I have an opening I'd always prefer to give Mgousers the first crack at it.

FWIW - I tried the "official" Alumni posting site thing and didn't get a single response. Either that system just stinks or no one wants a programming job in SoCal.

Not sure if I should put this in a diff thread - But since all the nerds seem to have congregated here anyway...

I too am looking for a coder.

Ideal candidate would have a portfolio of mobile apps to show off (preferably iPhone but even better if you can do iOS and Android)

App dev would be mostly game/interactive content type stuff (think Morris Lessmore).

1 year 14 weeks ago The important thing to note

The important thing to note is that is the PRINT style guide.... So, while the Athletic Dept. is using those Pantones for print materials, it obviously is not necessarily using them for uniform colors.

For what it's worth, there is also a web style guide: http://www.logos.umich.edu/web.html

That indicates the proper hex colors to use as Blue #3A5E8C and Yellow #F6D565. Interesting that nobody posted those colors...

The conversions for PMS 282 and PMS 116 are respectively #002654 and #FCD116 (the ones submitted by Seth).

1 year 26 weeks ago Michigan's Sections in Superdome?

Does anyone know which sections were blocked out as Michigan's in the Superdome? Most interested in the Plaza and Club levels. From what's for sale it seems like mostly Plaza 116ish to 125ish? And Club 320 - 325? Does that sound right? Are there any other blocks?

If the above is true, then I assume all the sideline Club and Plaza seats went to sponsors, etc.?

thanx!

1 year 28 weeks ago I'm not even a lions fan, but

I'm not even a lions fan, but this is pretty ridiculous... Lions have been called for 4-5 penalties that were marginal at BEST, while NO got away with the same plays. Have the lions committed some stupid, ridiculous penalties? Yes. But that doesn't change the fact that the calls have been unbalanced. The tally is currently 11-3 when it should be more like 7-5(6). Take into account when those missing calls should have been (FG attempt, etc.) and it writes a diff story.

That said, I do think the Saints deserved the win more. I just feel like they were provided an easier path to it than they deserved.

1 year 28 weeks ago not saying the lions aren't

not saying the lions aren't hurting themselves with stupid penalties... BUT how is it PI for Burleson, but not for Meachem (in the 1st) for essentially the exact same moves?!?!

Personally, I'm not a huge fan. But *shrug* if the players want em, so be it. I do wish they could at least make the shade of yellow match the wing/stripes though.

Yes, they do.

I do think it's kinda cool that they went with the old school Trefoil logo instead of the modern 3-striper.

1 year 44 weeks ago You could... Multiple NICs on

You could... Multiple NICs on the same subnet *can* work. But it's not the best solution and can cause weirdness.

It'd be much simpler to tell your computer what traffic you didn't want going to the VPN.

Normally (no VPN) your computer's routing table (a directory of where to send what traffic) has an entry that says send everything to the main gateway (usually the router in your home.) Then your home router figures out where to send the traffic. When you connect to the VPN a new entry gets added to the table that takes precedence over the existing entry and says instead, 'send all traffic to me.' So, everything gets sent via the VPN tunnel and the VPN server now figures out where it needs to go.

However, the way routing works if there is a more specific route it will be used. So, all you need to do is tell your computer which traffic should use the router as its path instead of the VPN.

On a Mac adding a route would look something like this (PC is very similar):

MyMac:~ me$ sudo route add <IP address I don't want on VPN>/32 <IP address of my home router>

Now traffic to that IP will bypass the VPN.

1 year 44 weeks ago I'd suggest going thru this

I'd suggest going thru this howto: http://openvpn.net/index.php/access-server/docs/admin-guides/499-openvpn-access-server-ami.html

It walks you thru setting up the server piece.

Client setup is pretty straightforward once you have the server set up. You connect to the server and can download the connect client from there.

If you prefer the PPTP route, there's a good walkthrough here: http://www.dikant.de/2010/10/08/setting-up-a-vpn-server-on-amazon-ec2/

Or if you really must have IPSEC then there's Openswan. But honestly, in my experience it can get tricky with EC2 (IP addresses, routing, etc.) whereas the other two tend to 'just work.'

1 year 44 weeks ago I realize this solution may

I realize this solution may not be ideal for less tech-savvy members...

But $20/mo for  VPN you'll use 6-10 hours a week seems ridiculous to me. So, I would instead propose using an Amazon EC2 micro instance in the Ireland availability zone and then just proxy (or VPN if necessary) through that. At $.025/hr + data transfer costs, you'd no doubt pay less than $20 for the entire season.

Also, I see no where in the terms that they require a non-US billing address. Am I missing it somewhere?

Edit: Even better... OpenVPN has an AMI available to make this even easier. See here. Since you get 2 client connections for free, you'd still only be paying for the EC2 instance and the data transfer.

2 years 1 week ago Having grown up with M

Having grown up with M football in the Bo era, I for one am all for the stickers. I don't give a rat's a** what tsio does or not (esp. since Woody snaked the idea from Bo.). I thought they were cool then, I wouldn't mind them now.

That said, I think you leave it up to the team. Let them decide if they wanna use them or not. If they decide to leave them off the helmets, then fine. If they want them, also fine.

Why should we really care? Isn't it about what's gonna make the team better? Not whether some dufus in row 43 thinks the helmets look better with/without stickers?

2 years 3 weeks ago I know many have posited that

I know many have posited that they will be without additional players... But given the NCAA's history in dealing with these things, there's every possibility no further sanctions would come down for the coming season.

I'm not saying they might not eventually get hit with (hopefully a lot) more. But the Aug 12 hearing is specifically related to Tressel breaking rule 10.1. The NCAA would either have to push back the hearing and broaden its investigation or start a new investigation into the new allegations. In either case nothing would likely come down in the way of sanctions for awhile.

Look at USC. That story first broke in 06 (with infractions going back to 04) and they are not going to start serving most of their penalties until next year. That's 6 years they've been dealing with the case.

I don't think this case will last that long. But realistically if the NCAA *is* going to dig deeper (as I'm sure we all hope they do), it's gonna take time.

2 years 3 weeks ago And really, what's to push?

And really, what's to push? Sure they got a bunch of people to say what went on. But most of them did so on request of anonymity. So, how does any of that help an NCAA investigation?

Sure, it further confirms a lot of what everyone was suspecting. But ultimately it doesn't do much to push any cases forward. *Maybe* now the NCAA has a bigger list of players to interview. But what's to keep them all from saying it's all lies? Or taking the Clarrett  route and just stonewalling? Where's the smoking gun?

It was an interesting read and well researched and written. But it's hardly as damning as the cover implies.

Unfortunately, they were already working with the NCAA on the investigation at the time the Yahoo! story came out. So, as far as the NCAA is concerned, it was self-reported. You and I and the rest of the world may not have known about it until the story broke - but the NCAA did.

I wish it weren't so, but it is.

Of course the *perception* of what went down may have some impact on what the NCAA ultimately does to them. Since I think they may be tiring of being the press' whipping boys. I think the NCAA prolly thought when they came down on SC that everyone would be happy and they could go back in their closet. Then Auburn happened, and Oregon, and OSU... Now they look like pansies again.

Of course, I was the one needing consoling a cpl nights later... :/

2 years 19 weeks ago Forgot something...

For a primer on eligibility, I actually found these PDFs from some Big 12 compliance seminars. They cover the whole issue of redshirt/hardship/etc. They're not too long and spell things out fairly clearly. I encourage everyone to take a look. They do not cover the practice of switching a counter to being a non-counter due to injury (Saban.)

Initial Counters

Medical Hardships

Extending the 5 yr clock

2 years 19 weeks ago Technically, the only true

Technically, the only true "Redshirt" is for athletes who do not participate for an entire season.

From the NCAA FAQ on the subject:

The term "redshirt" is used to describe a student-athlete who does not participate in competition in a sport for an entire academic year. If you do not compete in a sport the entire academic year, you have not used a season of competition. For example, if you are a qualifier, and you attend a four-year college your freshman year, and you practice but do not compete against outside competition, you would still have the next four years to play four seasons of competition.

Each student is allowed no more than four seasons of competition per sport. If you were not a qualifier, you may have fewer seasons of competition available to you. You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.

The term Medical Redshirt is commonly used but in actuality is referred to by the NCAA as either a Medical Hardship Waiver or Medical Extension Waiver. These terms apply only to a student athlete's years of competition and eligibility.

What Saban makes liberal use of is actually covered in section 15.5.1.3 of the NCAA bylaws. It basically says if you become so injured that you'll never play again, a school can keep you on scholarship (i.e., provide Financial Aid) without having it count towards the 85 limit.

Here's the actual text (a 'counter' is an athlete that counts toward scholarship limits):

15.5.1.3 Counter Who Becomes Injured or Ill. A counter who becomes injured or ill to the point that he or she apparently never again will be able to participate in intercollegiate athletics shall not be considered a counter beginning with the academic year following the incapacitating injury or illness.

15.5.1.3.1 Incapacitating Injury or Illness. If an incapacitating injury or illness occurs prior to a prospective student-athlete's or a student-athlete's participation in athletically related activities and results in the student-athlete's inability to compete ever again, the student-athlete shall not be counted within the institution's maximum financial aid award limitations for the current, as well as later academic years. How- ever, if the incapacitating injury or illness occurs on or after the student-athlete's participation in countable athletically related activities in the sport, the student-athlete shall be counted in the institution’s maximum financial aid limitations for the current academic year but need not be counted in later academic years. (Adopted: 1/10/91, Revised: 3/26/04, 9/18/07)

I tend to agree with the OP. Note they didn't say the responses needed to be stopped, merely tempered. To my mind this means lowering the level of some of the invective and general snarkiness about it. It's as if some people care more about ridiculing a poster for a redundant post than the actual content of the board. If someone has already replied with a simple "This was already posted/covered in <link to original post with title>, thanks." Then isn't that enough? Just move on and leave the topic alone.

2 years 20 weeks ago While I agree the report is

While I agree the report is somewhat biased. I believe her numbers are correct. She does not omit BTN $ completely. It's simply that it's ONLY counted in the aggregate numbers. So, football specific revenue (and comparisons) does not reflect BTN $, but on the whole it's accounted for.

Another factor that will alter these numbers moving forward is the rapid growth in BTN revenue. While the payout to the Big Ten schools was $72M for 2009, the networks profitability doubled the following and should see similar growth this year. That's going to add up to a LOT more $ in the AD's hands.

4) See #3.

5) Seeing something you've worked on come to fruition. Satisfaction from seeing your charges grow and learn. Fat paychecks/bonuses never hurt.

6) Good managers can adapt. Your average to below avg. mgr. has a style and sticks with it. This works if all his subordinates are of the same type or if they are smart enough to adapt to the mgr. But a really good mgr. can adapt to the situation and people around her/him and coax the best results from all.

7) Experience. There is no substitute. I think it helps to have experienced many types of mgmt style as a subordinate yourself. It helps you to understand what will/won't work. Also, having the background to understand where your employees are coming from is helpful. You don't need to know everything about what a person does, but you can't be clueless either.

8) Biggest mistakes were bad hires. Sometimes what comes across in interviews just doesn't manifest on the job. Other than that, I would say not recognizing issues quickly enough to minimize their impact.

I also find it disheartening that the term, because it's been misused, has become less important or misunderstood.

When people say they want a Michigan Man at the helm, I agree wholeheartedly. The problem is that not everyone understands what that really means. I couldn't care less if you coached for tOSU (Bo did), if you are at Michigan and that's where you want to be, then you are a Michigan Man.

So, I don't think it's necessarily imperative that the hire be a "name." It certainly wouldn't hurt. I just don't think it's nearly as important as other factors.

Well, frankly morality is something that no book can answer. So, yeah. You got me there. Good on you. You've got to come up with your own gauge for morality. So, if I implied any sort of moral certitude in my post, I apologize. I cannot answer "what is moral?" You need to come to your own conclusion.

As for the second question - "why is anybody's version more credible than another's?" Well, I would say that depends in large part on the information available. And in this particular case, I feel there's a fair amount of publicly available information that can lead to certain conclusions. If you disagree, so be it. Then yeah, your conclusions will be different and we will not agree. But the facts will still be the same. At which point it will be a disagreement about what is or isn't  moral. *shrug* some may find your view correct - others might agree with mine. But at the end of the day, it's still just opinions. Near as I can tell, LSU is losing 8 players this yr. Their current class has 21 guys. I'm assuming they'll add at least another 5 by NSD (they've average 25, but that's brought down by one yr where they took 13.) Assuming the ones leaving are all scholarship guys, that means they will be over by 18. Now of course some will quit, transfer, etc. But not 18. That means some guys will be getting the dreaded form letter mentioned in the piece.

I'm sorry, but I find THAT impossible to reason with.

PS - not all SEC coaches do it - Vandy and Georgia are actually pretty good about it.

2 years 23 weeks ago WRT the buyout question...

Buyouts in FCS are rare. Some guys do have them, and he's likely to be one of them. For example, David Bennett at CCU has a buyout equal to 100% of his remaining salary if he leaves for another 1AA school (note it doesn't appear to apply to a move to 1A.) I'm sure Keeler's is somewhere along those lines.

That said, Keeler's among the top paid guys in the league. In 09 he made a whopping - wait for it - $310,662.

So, I don't think $$$ would even remotely be an issue with this guy.

"That whole Michigan thing was for real," Keeler said.

2 years 23 weeks ago Indications from sources

Indications from sources (e.g., Schefter, Mortensen, etc.) are that SF is not willing to ante up to the $$$ JH is looking for. MIA (Ross) might be willing to. But even so, my personal feeling is that it'll have to be the right situation (control, etc.) for JH to make the jump. If he decides (in spite of the $$) that the sit isn't right, then he'll likely just stick with Stanford.

Just MHO.

2 years 23 weeks ago halleluja

The voice of reason. I'm so sick of all the Michgan Man talk. Not because I don't want one at the helm of our football team, I definitely do. Rather, because it seems 90%+ of the people talking about it don't seem to have the foggiest idea of what it really means to be a Michigan Man.

Do you really consider Palm Springs a suburb of LA? I mean, it's 100+ miles east fercrissakes.

2 years 23 weeks ago important point

I think that's an important point wrt ANY of the coaching options out there. If these are 'stand up' guys that 'do the right thing' then leaving their current team in the lurch on the eve of nat'l signing day would probably be fairly uncomfortable and unpalatable. This to me is one of the huge flaws in the whole 'process.' We're essentially saying we want men of character, discipline, etc. (Michigan Man characteristics) but because we're doing it at such a late hour in the overall scheme of things, we're also basically saying we want them to veer from those principles to accept our overtures just because we're Michigan.

That's my biggest beef with the timing of the 'process.' Do it in Dec. and you can have a standard (at least for a major leadership change) transition. But doing it this way basically ensures there is bad blood, casualties (recruiting, etc.), hypocrisy, and/or all of the above.

2 years 23 weeks ago Touche'

You're probably right. I wasn't trying to suggest he'd stay college anyway - just pointing to past statements. At this point there looks to be too much NFL smoke (i.e., $$$$) for there not to be a change. Though, I do think if for some reason none of the NFL jobs feel 'right' for him, he'll prolly end up back at Stanford.

He has only one buyout clause in his contract. It's for UM and it's $1.25M. You can read through the whole thing here: http://i.usatoday.net/sports/graphics/2009/coaches-contracts/pdf/miles_lsu.pdf

2 years 23 weeks ago more of a college guy

JH has said so himself. From an interview he did a yr and a half ago:

Another interesting response came when Harbaugh was asked about his potential future as an NFL head coach. While one would expect Harbaugh to say he will stay at Stanford forever, I was surprised by the way he denied his ability to coach in the NFL. “I consider myself a collegiate coach.” He followed that up later with “I think I am a college guy.”

Hilarious. Was just told Denard Robinson walked out the side door then behind gathered media at Schembechler Hall got in car and left lol

Nowhere does it say it was in the middle of the meeting. Don't you think that's just a bit of an overly negative spin?

2 years 23 weeks ago Not to mention it took him 6

Not to mention it took him 6 yrs to get there. Everyone keeps talking about how he's turned around BS and SDSU. I don't see it myself. I'm not saying the guy is bad. But I just don't see any evidence he's all that either.

2 years 24 weeks ago While I think we'd all like

While I'm sure we'd all like to believe we are above reproach, I think it's been shown in the past that even we can engage in some ummm questionable behavior. I'm not suggesting we are SEC-like or anything along those lines. We're probably in the upper echelons in terms of 'doing the right thing.' But the fact is UM is a massive sports machine. If you lift the covers it won't all be shiny and spotless. That's just reality.

John H said in and interview he "wouldn't be surprised" if Jim stayed at Stanford:

I for one would love to see the helmet stickers come back.

FYI - the ones JH gives out now are very similar to the ones Bo gave out when he first started doing it. They are axe heads. http://axecomm.stanford.edu/images/Axe_Logo.png

2 years 24 weeks ago The quote that gets all the

The quote that gets all the attention is "a Michigan man will coach Michigan, not an Arizona State man." Bo said it after Frieder announced he was leaving for ASU right before the tourney was starting.

But, guess what? Frieder was the one that went to UM, not Fisher. So, obviously alumni status has nothing to do with being a 'Michigan Man.' It has everything to do with (by Bo's standards) dedication and loyalty to Michigan. Period.

2 years 24 weeks ago In all the talk re: Tate's

In all the talk re: Tate's academics I noticed everyone is focused on just the quote where he says it's easy here. Also, there's been lots of speculating about why he took 16 credits, where are the counselors, etc. I would encourage anyone who's only seen some of the quotes to actually go and read the entire piece.

Here's one quote in particular I felt maybe some here hadn't made it to (italics for emphasis mine):

This academic semester: “I have 16 credits. So it was tough. I’m declared a junior next month so for me to be eligible, I have to have the credits a junior would have. All I needed was 14, but they gave me 16, just in case I didn’t do well in another class. Which is smart. I feel like I did well in all my classes. I feel like I was good enough in all of the, to get a C or higher. So that’s a good thing. I’m doing well in school. I’m starting to realize how important school is. I used to never take it that seriously and as long as I got by I was fine. But now it’s like, especially now that I don’t play, I have to realize football will only be there so long. Sooner or later, you’re going to have to get a job and nobody’s going to hire you if you don’t have degree and if you have a degree from here, you’ll have a hell of a job.”

I think that statement makes it pretty clear that the academic counselors were the ones advising the 16 credits. Which also implies they had a pretty good read on where he stood at the beginning of the term. Of course, the rest of the quote, where he talks about how he thinks he was good enough unfortunately turned out to be wrong. Nevertheless, I think a lot of comments here could have been avoided if people had just read the entire interview.

2 years 26 weeks ago Nice post and good info for

Nice post and good info for people with respect to the way branding works at a major organization. I agree with what you say regarding costs of implementing a new logo. However, as you yourself point out, the design firm likely created several options before this one was chosen. And those most certainly were not much more than what was submitted as options here on the board. Only once one or two of those were chosen (by the Big Ten) as the finalists did the design firm sink anymore money into refining or providing alternate formats, etc. (ie. the things that cost $$$)

So, the problem here isn't the $$$ or Pentagram. It's the fact that Delaney and Co. 1) did this all behind closed doors 2) did so with such obvious bad taste (the overwhelming disdain stands as proof of that.)

I'd be curious to see what other options Pentagram had presented. Also, I definitely think there has to have been some sort of disconnect between the people that made these choices and the ones running the show at the BTN - For the branding to be so different.

2 years 28 weeks ago making the trip

I live in the h'wood hills and have made the friday trek up to the SB area many times. I wouldn't sweat the traffic too much this time of year.

That said, you might consider forgoing the 101 or the 5 and just stick with streets (6th, beverly, sunset, etc.) and hop on the 101 around the cahuenga pass area, mebbe just over the hill. Unfortunately, the stretch from the 134/170 junction to the 405 is pretty much always a hassle. So, your idea of taking the 170/5 to the 118 might actually not be so bad.

Still debating whether to make the trip or not. Maybe make a wine tasting weekend out of it ;)

2 years 30 weeks ago *sigh* my first post

*sigh* my first post shouldn't be a nitpick - but it is. Sorry.

If it was the last play of the game, the score should be 37-35. No need to add the PAT.

Gah - really sorry. Cuz otherwise, I think this is the last scene in the penultimate episode of the season.
