I upvoted you because I couldn't stand seeing someone say something was turning into a Posbang with zero upvotes.

The larger problem is that their TO differential has hovered around there every year that Schwartz has been the coach. It was acceptable when they had no talent, but now they're one of the most talented teams in the league and they're not getting any better on that front.

The "Backup QB" syndrome thing is accurate, but thankfully, UM will play both next year, and the players will have the time to prove it on the field. Backup QB syndrome tends to get traction based on the fact that they never actually have to prove they're better; the fans can just imagine that they are. Smith and Green will both get touches next year (a lot of touches) and as a result, if one is clearly better, we'll know.
I'm just not worried either way. The better player will win.

It's amazing how much a smiling kid can turn a bad day because my team lost around in a heartbeat. I'm with you. Having kids changes so much.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||The kids should be happy||
The kids should be happy going 10-2. 10-2 is a great season for basically every school. And don't feed me any of the "This is Michigan" bullshit; UM has gone undefeated just three times since 1950. 10-2 is a respectable, relevant season. Getting upset that someone is satisifed by that is stupid.

|3 weeks 5 days ago||Eh. They've played the 101st||
Eh. They've played the 101st toughest schedule in FBS this year. It's not like they've been putting FSU (who's played the 94th hardest) style beat downs on everyone they play. I think a case could be made that a truly elite team would have much better than the ~10th best efficiency against such a weak schedule.
|5 weeks 6 hours ago||They didn't, which is||
They didn't, which is shocking, because Michigan only has one audible out of that formation (Ace 2TE Pistol), which is the speed option to the field side. I saw the audible as it was happening, saw Gardner step back into the Pistol and told everyone I was with "This is a speed option right" and well, you know the rest.
Literally knowing exactly what play the offense is going to run before they run it is...not great.

Hand is an exceptional talent and seems like an incredibly intelligent young man. He is going to have a great deal of success at Alabama and likely a long and productive NFL career.
I wish him nothing but the best. Unless we play him. Then I wish that we block him effectively and spends the entire game frustrated with his inability to make plays.

This didn't feel either demeaning or douchey. SC is a very vocal presence on the board, and he's been posting lots of great stuff, but Brian disagrees with him. I'd guess that SC's diary which disagrees with Brian will probably get front paged.
It's a discussion. That means sometimes people are disagreeing with each other. That's not a bad thing.

Jim Brown is one of the greatest running backs of all time, but I wouldn't sign him to take handoffs on Sundays.
Simply being great doesn't earn you a spot on a football team. Houston's defense is about 7% more efficient than the Lions' defense, adjusted for opponent strength. I seriously question the value of disrupting team chemistry in the backfield by trying to plug in a safety that just got cut from a middle-of-the-road defense. If he couldn't make the field in Houston, why would we want him here?
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Why would Ed Reed want to||
Why would Ed Reed want to come to the Lions and ride the bench? Why would the Lions want to sign someone who is getting cut from a team that's won what...2 games this year?

Clearly the last coaching search turned out so well, this one should go swimmingly, right?
I think we need to make changes in the coaching staff, but expecting us to "just get a coach who knows what he's doing" is far easier said than done.

Southern Miss had 282 yards of offense and 13 points against a healthy version of this defense, in Nebraska. And 60 yards of rushing, including sacks.
You know. More perspective.

PSU isn't better than us; we played them at night, in their house, in a game they were pumped up for and only lost in quadruple overtime after rolling snake eyes three straight times on game winning field goals. That's not something that happens when a team is clearly better than you.
MSU is clearly better than us. In fairness, MSU is probably one of the ten best football teams in the country right now. They've got a shot at being in the NCG conversation if they can knock off the Buckeyes in the BTCG (that's assuming that at least some of the teams currently undefeated lose a game, which may not be likely).
MSU would be the second best team in the SEC West right now. They're probably the best team (or close to it) in the SEC East. It's not like their #1 defense (adjusted for strength of schedule) is some kind of accident. It's legit.
|6 weeks 5 days ago||You feel confident that we're||
You feel confident that we're going to lose to a Northwestern team that's literally come apart at the seams so badly they're putting blood on their special uniforms? That seems like a bold and entirely silly prediction.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||Unless you're Oregon,||
Unless you're Oregon, Alabama, Florida State, Miami or BYU, basically everyone has been pretty underwhelming this year. The whole of the NCAA this year is pretty subpar.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||I realize that everyone is in||
I realize that everyone is in the middle of the Ultimate Ennui Trip right now, but this team is playing significantly better at this point in the season than they were against either UCONN or Akron.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||I think you're right. I'm||
I think you're right. I'm just arguing against the idea that 7-5 is a likely outcome for the rest of the season. Both Nebraska and Northwestern are simply too mediocre/bad for that to be a likely outcome.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||The only games we are likely||
The only games we are likely to be uncompetitive in this season were yesterday and against OSU. Obviously the loss at PSU stings and makes this whole process a little more painful, as do the two awful games against lesser competition early in the season. Obviously, you don't want to be uncompetitive against your two biggest rivals, but both of those teams are coached by top flight coaches who have players that match their systems and have had extensive success at this level before.
I'm in agreement that we need to shake some things up offensively. I'm not of the opinion that the whole house is burning down.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||<blockquote>This team also||
This team also started 5-0 but can anyone look at the remaining schedule and not say that a 7-6 finish this for this team is possible if not probable?
Yes. UM's remaining games are @Iowa, @Northwestern, Nebraska and Ohio State (not in that order, obviously). OSU would appear to be a likely loss. That would put us at 3 losses on the season. Nebraska will likely fall to us at home, and we will win in Evanston. That puts us at eight wins.
That leaves the Iowa game. At Kinnick, but against a team that plays a style of offense we're designed to stop and who doesn't play defense nearly as well as MSU. That's the difference between 8-4 and 9-3. Now, if you'll remember, when we started, the realistic predictions out of everyone and their brother was 8-4 to 9-3. There were hopeful predictions that went higher, but nobody realistically thought we were a ten win team unless Devin played out of his mind the whole season, which hasn't happened.
In other words, we are exactly where we thought we'd be. And yet everyone is freaking out like this is some kind of super failure by the whole coaching staff from top to bottom. There needs to be shakeups on the offensive side of the ball, I agree. But to say that we're going to lose to the worst Nebraska and Northwestern teams in years is fatalist nonsense.
