"The University of Illinois is also in turmoil. The university sports an Interim Chancellor, an Interim Athletic Director, and an Interim Football Coach; the game will be played at Soldier Field, making this an Illini Interim Home Game."

Have had several different Midwestern, California iterations. Nothing, after age 17, has remained constant. The thing I have going now is that I bring wines for my inlaws' dinner. This year an Alban Syrah was the headline.

The bettors move the line. If it opened at -1.5, there was a flood of action on Sparty, moving the line.

Hard to know if he could have done better. LSU and USC, clearly better jobs, were not going to take a risk on a guy with 1 year as a head coach. Virginia Tech I suspect would also want more experience.
That leaves Missouri, Miami, Iowa State, Illinois. All of those schools would want Herman, I would imagine. The only one that strikes me as arguably a better opportunity is Miami, which has natural recruiting advantages. But given the choice, I would rather coach at SC, where expectations are quite as high, and which has had more stability over the last ten years.

I suppose that what makes this season so classically Michigan football, post-1980 give or take, is that the season began with a west coast road trip loss, from which Michigan rebounded to dominate many games, then lost a game they should have won, and won a couple they could have easily lost, ending the season with Ohio State and the Rose Bowl on the line.

That is a job that Pasqualoni made look much easier than it is. I never though Shafer was an ace candidate, and you have to think Syracuse would have been better off staying with Marrone. Firing Shafer has at least superficial appeal: looking at Syracuse's last two years, I can't imagine them being worse. But really this is Syracuse trying to correct an error it made several years ago with respect to Marrone.

If I am not sure what "hate week" thread to post in, I think that's a sign I belong in this camp.
Someone should start a Rose Bowl thread. I want to go to the Rose Bowl. Remember how nice it is at the Rose Bowl, tailgating in the golf course, throwing a football and sweating out a Hollywood New Years Eve? Cruising around other tailgates watching the Citrus Bowl, Outback Bowl, on somone else's satellite TV? Bashing brews with dudes you haven't really seen all that much since Ann Arbor? That sweet smell of dew, turf, eucaplytpus, and California January morning sun? The San Gabriels touched with morning light? Giddy recollections of '98? Maybe pour out a little pinot for the three out of four Michigan lost during your L.A. years?
Rose, motherfucking, Bowl.

LSU fans are delusional if they think they deserve better than Les Miles. They are Nebraska South, except without Nebraska's arguable historical mandate. I hope they hire Bo Pelini and get five years of overheated, lughead fulminations that will make Les look elegant by comparison.

You don't recall being down 7 with under ten seconds left and fourth down? Not to mention that the extra point was no gimme with a gimp snapper?

With a healty Connor Cook State can play with any team. It will be a coin flip between State and OU in the scenario where all win out. OU and State have a similar loss (Texas and Nebraska are having remarkably similar seasons), and are very close in terms of overall schedule (Sparty beat Oregon at home, OU went to Tennessee).
I am pulling for a Sparty loss next week, so that if Michigan beats Ohio it earns the Rose Bowl bid rather than backing into it. But if that doesn't happen, I hope Sparty gets the nod over OU for the Playoff.
|1 week 11 hours ago||Having thought this through,||
Having thought this through, there is a strong possibility the Big Ten could get shut out of the playoff if Michigan State wins out. In that case, it's Sparty to the Rose. Sparty needs to lose to either Penn State or Iowa to send Michigan to the Rose Bowl. Of course, if ND loses to Stanford or the Big12 shakes out in an odd way, things could be different.

Why is everyone assuming the Rose Bowl is off the table? Losers of the conference title game usually get bypassed for top bowls. Are there new rules in effect this year?

|2 weeks 6 days ago||You could catch the Michigan||
You could catch the Michigan game at the Old Pro in Palo Alto. Palo Alto has a pretty tame game day vibe, but you are cutting it pretty close to try to catch the game at the Michigan bar in the City (which is fun but in the Outer Richmond, and will not be bouncing for the Indiana game), or in the Marina (where there is more college football buzz due to high concentration of recent grads and, I am sorry to say it, douche bags).
Also, you shold consider there are likely to be more than a few Ducks in town, as they travel well, and they are likely to be at the Old Pro, or other bars, getting tuned up. Could be liver than usual.
My $0.02 is that you should go to Palo Alto. You can go to SF any time, and get the same fun experience. To go to Palo Alto on a gameday is something you'll not have the chance to do too many times, I wouldn't think.

Rutgers got the benefit of some sketchy calls in the first half, including a missed block in the back on the return that set up their field goal before half time. There are no excuses for a special teams let down, such as on the kick-off return, but Michigan dominated them, and the game was not as close as the half-time score implied.
