This was the peak in my…

This was the peak in my opinion. Otherwise this game could have gone the other way. Elevated Michigan to where it had not been in 49 years, for the most important program, in its most bitter rivalry, at the flagship university in the state.

Michigan Ohio State in…

Michigan Ohio State in November 1997, when Woodson broke the punt return.

I didn’t know Sam Kinison had a son, or that he made basketball videos

An objectively good hire.  In my mind, if we could not rehire Beilein, this is the next best reasonably available option.

Lot of parallels to '97'-98…

Lot of parallels to '97'-98. Talented team, dropped some games early. Borderline underachievers. Finished second in the conference (to Sparty, no less). Went deep into the conference tournament. Missing a Marty Turco type, however.

I don’t follow Michigan…

I don’t follow Michigan State admin politics at all, but why would Gov. Whitmer get involved ? Ethical violations should be policed by the body that sets those standards. Gov. Whither is a Sparty and has no desire to make negative headlines. Maybe I am missing something? Bad politics.

Have gamecast up as I go…

Have gamecast up as I go through my Sunday. Blue got down 8-2 and has played well since then.

If at all possible I would favor adding another day in June.

I think I could beat my 22 year old self at running. Logged 4400+ miles since the pandemic. Almost any other physical activity, LOL, not so much.

Bodes well for him sticking around, right? They are nearly watchable in games where he plays.

Crootin'.

Fargas came to Michigan…

Fargas came to Michigan after the ‘97 championship and left for USC at the dawn of the Pete Carroll era. That is so cool. He is an LA dude for sure.

Both of those coaches are…

Both of those coaches are very talented and capable. We are kidding ourselves if we do not think Ohio is going to be formidable. They are every year.

They had their best team in…

They had their best team in the 1990s after Michigan won the '97 NC. Ohio soundly beat Michigan at the Shoe with some guy named Brady at quarterback for Blue. In a playoff they get in and beat Florida State or Tennessee.

1985 season. I remember the…

1985 season. I remember the Ohio St Michigan football game and also being dimly aware of other games as they created a hard stop for Saturday cartoons.

I keep coming back to the…

I keep coming back to the fact that successful baseball, basketball, and football coaches all walked. There was some hair around the Harbaugh situation, maybe. He would have left for the NFL two years ago if he could. But who made the call to cut his salary in half? Warde. Who admitted to lagging behind on a new contract? Warde. Who has failed to lead initiatives on NIL, transfers? A lot of people, including the Regents. But I blame Warde.

I don’t care what the record…

I don’t care what the record is, that is a mentally tough second half performance. Tschetter in particular. Shot by T Will late in the shot clock to make it 46-48 was also huge.

Anything Ross would do on (1…

Anything Ross would do on (1) would be sub rosa and back channel. I would applaud it. Dudes like Ross do not express disagreement WWF style.

On (2) it is complicated. He could do something sustainable and even self-sustaining with U of M help and corporate sponsorship. It is a pretty big ask for Ross to cut a big check for the NIL quagmire but small donors, like me, do it. He should use his influence as a way to improve the process/platform.

Brightside: it is a good…

Brightside: it is a good time to take your kid and several of their friends to see their first Michigan game. You can get several seats for what a stadium beer costs (to be clear: I am not recommending any of you degenerates drink while taking your friends' kids to a game).

I prefer Cullen but only…

I prefer Cullen but only weakly. DC is the one spot on this staff where Moore needs to take his time and hire an impact guy. Martindale knows the Ravens system. He has also been a DC at three NFL franchises.

Deja vu all over again... …

Deja vu all over again... (The sensation of uncanny familiarity, not the strip club.) Jimmy hired the same guy his first year at the Niners.

I have seen enough. You can…

I have seen enough. You can just say "failed to retain successful coaching talent in key programs" and leave it at that. But there is more!

Michigan fans, we freak out…

Michigan fans, we freak out about shit. Harbaugh took four coaches with him from Stanford to the 49ers, including the two new coordinators (Fangio and Roman). None of these dudes proved to be crucial to anything. The Harbaugh assistant who stayed, David Shaw, he won a game or two. Actually he won two Rose Bowls and *checks notes* more games than any other Stanford coach.

UPDATE: When Pete Caroll left USC, he took *six coaches* with him, including the defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator, OL coach, and QB coach for USC.

Guys, let's get some perspective here.

I agree with the conclusion …

I agree with the conclusion (fire Warde) but fuck this noise.

I rewatched that 2021 Ohio…

I rewatched that 2021 Ohio game probably a dozen times in December 2021. I try to limit myself on rewatches in the offseason as part of an overall cleanse. That is more difficult this year as the season went late and there was a coaching change. It is hard not to feel nostalgic that this era is over. Nostalgia is a big part of being a Michigan football fan.

Update: ordered on 1/12, shipped on Friday. LFG!

I was there in person for…

I was there in person for several of those games (most recently the Lions in Santa Clara).

I would add 2009 Red Wings Stanley Game 7. 2015 Michigan State football. 2018 Ohio State football game. 1994 Colorado football game. 1988-89 Notre Dame football. The fuckin ‘13 NCAA MBB title game.

2014 Michigan football was…

2014 Michigan football was like this. The team was so poorly coached, it made coaching seeming really hard (it is). With Beilein and Harbaugh Michigan fans were so spoiled.

You didn’t mention the…

You didn’t mention the Rockford Files references. There were multiple. Going to miss those weird 70’s pop culture references. The funniest is when he told the media in 2016, in reference to reports he had NFL interest, that they were “jive turkeys,” citing Rockford Files.  Peak Harbaugh.

Get a grip. Michigan…

Get a grip. Michigan football just won a national championship. Santa was vocal in supporting Jimmy all through the sign stealing stuff, the NCAA investigation, NFL interviews last offseason. That is unprecedented for a UofM president.

1. Chiefs. Mahomes the best…

1. Chiefs. Mahomes the best player on the field.

2. Niners. If it can’t be the Lions let it be one for the Bay. Moody kicks the game winning FG and becomes immortal

It was about control. The…

It was about control. The money is part of that. Note also the GM got hired after Jimmy. It sounds more and more like the Chargers gave in to nearly every demand. That does not mean, however, ownership will not undermine him with formality and hierarchy, and passive-aggressive corporate machination. (Sort of like Warde Manuel did.)

Holy smokes !

This makes…

Holy smokes !

This makes him the second-highest paid coach in the NFL:

1. Sean Payton $18 million

2. Jimmy $16 million

3. Sean McVay $15 million

This puts it into perspective how Elite Jimmy is, and how rare it is to land the type of job he has at the Chargers. Everyone who was paid that type of money (Belichek, Carroll, Payton, McVay) has a Super Bowl ring.

Ross is a great place to…

Ross is a great place to explore those interests with classes tailored to Wall Street and finance. If Ross fails, major in economics or learn accounting and apply to Wall Street firms and other big companies who do on campus recruiting. Wall Street is a brutal grind (I worked for a Wall Street law firm for several years and have a bit of a window). Money does not go far in New York. If it were me a finance or fiscal role at a corporation seems like an route with more options. He can always get an MBA, focus on finance, and leverage that corporate experience down the road. Either way, hard work overcomes a lot in classes. Top grades in math/econ/stats classes go to those who do the work (get old exams, go to every class, do all the homework, treat it like a job).

To me that was Saban’s…

To me that was Saban’s recipe for success. Jimmy’s too. A huge collection of coaching talent.

+1 for Spirit of the West allusion. Good little band eh

I forgot about ‘09 Game 7…

I forgot about ‘09 Game 7. That was worse. Excruciating last two minutes.

It surely was a missed…

It surely was a missed opportunity. I was there too. What I like about watching the Lions is that I don’t lose my mind if they lose. A lot of drops in the second half. Certainly this the most painful Lions loss I remember. Up there with the Pistons losing Game 5 of the NBA finals in that shot by Horry, or losing Game 1 of the 2006 World Series.
