It really is one or the other at this point for Hoke. If he is going to turn it around there is little room for error.

The predictions are a kind of a black box. Any idea on what is guiding this metric? Michigan's strong-ish offensive run stastics, solid run defensive stats, and that Fresno moved the ball through the air against them?

Here's hoping that you continue to improve. And I think MGoCharity is a good way to rinse out the bad taste from the ND game, and refocus mental energy on a positive outlet.

ND looked very good offensively against Rice. I mean, historically good, as in I have not seen ND with a quarterback this good in 25 years. You would have to go back to 1988, 1989. I do not know how much of that was due to, perhaps, Rice being down from last year, and in any event not very good. Golston looked to be much-improved. He made several jaw-dropping throws, and showed terrific quickness in turning up the field and running. He has a higher ceiling than Gardner, and I think that is worth about a touchdown in the outcome, even with ND short-handed on defense.
To me, +5.5 sounds about right whereas the Sparty line seems unduly deferential to Oregon.

The team calling Saturday's Michigan game was weak. Not so much biased, as flat-out bad. Some examples include fucking up names of Michigan landmarks and players ("Union Hall," what?); sarcastic banter where the lead announcer was calling out Galloway's down-field blocking ability (you have to have some credibility to take swipes like that); total lack of knowledge of Michigan personnel, or context for who was playing where; trying to make Peppers' injury into a storyline.
I would rather suffer Galloway than either Robert Smith or Spielman. Those two, but especially Smith, are glib, smug, and engage in subtle passive-aggressive Buckeye promotion. Herbstreit is very, very good. He knows what he is talking about and can call a game.

Agreed re Bloomington, Indiana. Wayyyy underrated, especially when you consider Bloomington (Illinois) is 38.
|4 weeks 5 days ago||The top 3 on this list could||
The top 3 on this list could be in any order. I would put Madison at 1, followed by Ann Arbor, and then Boulder, but the one area that Boulder excels (skiing/outdoors) is not my thing.
Ames (5) versus Iowa City (9) is fairly amazing to me, but I admit I have never been to Ames. Iowa City is a blast.
Where this list breaks down entirely is the California analysis. Neither Santa Cruz nor Santa Barbara makes this list, but Claremont does. I have spent a bit of time in all three of these towns, particularly Claremont, and it is not even close. For a three block stretch, Claremont resembles a college town. But that is all you can say. It is the jewel of the Inland Empire, and the colleges are pretty, but it has a serious town/gown divide, and lacks both vitality and liveliness. But what is really just unconscionable is that Palo Alto does not crack the list. It is sterile, compared to places like Berkeley and Ann Arbor, but are there really 50 better college towns?

I suggest the Whataburger Bowl. Three Phoenix locations, per google. A sly, and ironic nod to the late, great DFW, who presaged this era of corporate sponsorship run amok.

That is a harder shot that it looked like in real time. A runner in the middle of the paint, with all momentum carrying forward. Watch that replay again, just watching the shooter's feet, and how he twists his body. Sure, if you are living or dying by allowing those shots, it will be a short Tourament run, but that is a lower percentage shot than a pull-up, under control, jumper, or allowing him to go all the way to the rim.

I'd rather play Ohio than the Huskers. What has hurt Michigan this year is teams with quick guards who can penetrate and/or hit 3's. Gallegos/Petteway have that slash/splash look, not so much Ohio.

They secured the 2 seed with the win. Anything else is now frosting.
|27 weeks 17 hours ago||Actually thought it was good||
Actually thought it was good defense at the end there. Levert over-extend, over-playing the jump shot and taking it away, and then Michigan had help at the rim. Left the offensive player with only a runner, when he wanted to either pull up or go to the rim.
Still: luck haz a blue hue this morning (Pacific time).

I take your point re differing standards for acceptable conduct, but this I think you have to apply a reasonableness standard (reasonableness may vary a bit by the workplace, i.e. what's reasonable for bartenders in Vegas may not be for officer workers here in SF). I think we agree Richie crossed it here.

Agree 100%. Here is a link to a summary of the worst of it. This would get you reprimanded, perhaps even fired, in any workplace in America. And rightfully so. You have to forget this is a lockerroom, or football. It is also a workplace, your teammates are co-workers, and the activities and insults described here are totally beyond the pale.

"If they don't like the deal, they have every right to enter the free market & sell their skills there." Not according to the United States Court of Appeal for the Second Circuit, they don't. Athletes have fought that battle and lost. The NFL and NBA, at the NCAA's request, require athletes to have post-high school experience. College players are barred from the relevant labor markets due to dubious regulatory concerns.
If you are truly a free-market thinker here, you say let colleges pay stars according to their potential value to the program. What you are supporting is actually a captured regulatory state.
