One factor is that Stanford has 36 varsity sports. That's many more than most schools. I think Michigan has 27 or so (28 if you count Womens LAX). So they offer a variety of country club "sports" not offered by tax-payer supported universities (like fencing, squash, sailing, "lightweight rowing," "sand volleyball" http://facts.stanford.edu/campuslife/athletics). That's cool and all, and I don't begrudge Stanford their squash excellence, but it's not a level playing field. But to me, some of these varsity sports at Stanford are as valid as Calvinball, beerpong, sloshball, or darts.

ASU will get the Irish here and there. Especially when ND has to travel there. This is actually an upgrade from Navy, Pitt, or some ACC softy. I think it's overall better for college football to mix up the matchups. We play MSU, Ohio every year, and that's enough. (In the interests of full disclosure, I am also rooting for a west coast roadie so I can watch the maize and blue in Berekely, Palo Alto, the Rose Bowl, or somewhere like that.) |

Harbaugh went to some of the SF "meet the coaches" stuff. He's back in the fold. As an NFL coach He is now an asset to Michigan, more than an asshat. |
| 1 week 2 days ago | Not really sure where you are |
Not really sure where you are going here. You could say RR was "snakebitten," in that off-field issues clouded a couple seasons, and his teams went into late season DEATHSPIRAL, but that is like a small downpayment on what it takes to be a contender for this crown. |
| 1 week 2 days ago | Sparty. Indiana, Purdue, |
Sparty. Indiana, Purdue, Minneha-ha all do not have the talent, or the pretensions, to be a football challenger. But Sparty does. Of all the teams considered a "contender" for the B1G football title coming into next year, only Sparty has never been to a BCS bowl. Of all teams that have been better than .500 in conference of late, Sparty has the longest Rose Bowl drought, longer even than Northwestern, Illinois, or Purdue (only Indiana and Minnesota have longer droughts). The mediocrity on the field is just part of an overall theme. They are just as classless as Ohio, but with far less to show for it. Sparty also has a persecution complex that puts Ohio's to shame--every time SpartyFAIL, it's always because of a blown call, etc. Losering is an art. It takes more than just getting beat a lot, or perenially falling short of expectations. There is an accursed element to Sparty, that is in other words they are "snakebitten." |

That is the Hawks' game. Will be interesting to see that matched up with the Bruins grind and counter-strike. When was the last time the two top seeds met in the finals? Awhile, I bet. A good long while. |

Thanks. We live in Cole Valley. It would frustrate me to be a student at one of the Claremont colleges, be so close to the Rose Bowl, but not having a team to follow. What is the WWZ? |
| 1 week 3 days ago | Richards!!!! |
Anyone watching this Kings-Hawks Game 5? Unreal. Richards deflects one off a faceoff with 9 seconds left to force OT. Thought it was over for the Kings when the Kaner slapped one in five minutes into the game to make it 2-0. Overall would like to see a Hawks-Bruins final, but I am glad there is more hockey to watch tonight. |

| 1 week 3 days ago | What struck me were the |
What struck me were the statements from ESPN employees along the lines of "that is just the culture here," etc. Now, I am not saying that the accused in that story is guilty of anything other than an (admitted) indiscretion, all that remains to be seen. In fact, I too think that the coverage is sensationalized, but there are enough facts in that article that are presented fairly enough that the reader can draw his or her own conclusions about the merits of the underlying suit (or lack thereof?). But what Deadspin really hits is the overall meathead culture of ESPN, the same boorish culture which has been detailed in a slew of historic Deadspin posts (texting dick picks, slanted coverage of the Leach/TTech story, etc.). ESPN has such clout in the sports world it is not only fair, but right, to scrutinize it. And what media outlet is going to question this bias, if not independent blogs? |
| 1 week 3 days ago | Hmmm so it is off limits to |
Hmmm so it is off limits to bash the type of male chauvinist behavior allegedly rampant at ESPN because the Company's job is to "explain sports"? Or even to link to an article exposing the same? Sorry, but that is bullshit. The attitudes and bias of the Mickey Mouse of Sports is relevant to their coverage of sports news, and more specifically the hopelessly flawed way they cover the sports world. |

Among other things, his piece posits a false parallel between German culture, and associated stereotypes, and African-American culture. There is not a history of derogatory and mean-spirited jokes concerning Germans and whatever the Hell Beckman's mother cooks, or Spanish and paella. Can there honestly be any doubt that the purpose of Garcia's comment was to cut Tiger Woods down? This piece is either naive in the extreme, or intellectually dishonest. |

Agree. The OP is using a shifty concept of "bounty." The NFL can credibly make a distinction between an all-star game where there are rewards and/or incentives, and an illicit "bounty" regimine where players are paid to injure other players. |

| 5 weeks 5 days ago | So let me get this straight: |
So let me get this straight: Wetzel wants Michigan to apologize to Weber for something the NCAA made them do, a situation Ed Martin created, and from which Chris Webber ultimately profited? Webber was on the dole four or five years before he came to Ann Arbor. I find no moral issue with that choice, as a matter of fact, but that is not something for which Michigan should apologize. I think it is pretty much fair fucks--nobody should apologize to anyone for anything. Michigan was punished, Webber was punished, for their respective wrongs, which were not transgressions against one another. |

Glad he went in the early fifth, rather than later as had been expected. Don't see many Jags here in SF. I was hoping the Niners would sack up and take him in the Fourth. |
