1 day 11 hours ago	I just got word back from EA	I just got word back from EA that MGoBlog will be getting a free preview copy of the game for us to review. Their media guy is a Michigan fan (from Indiana but nobody there follows the Hoosiers). Here's our problem: People with XBox360s: Brian, Heiko People with PS3s: Seth, Ace People with both: nobody. So...you guys all prefer a review of the PS3 version correct?

It also works for "Not to knock Denard's throwing ability but..." or "I'm not a communist but..." and all sorts of opinions you self-excuse yourself for. In circles where these things happen, people argue whether a "that being said..." clause is a paralipsis, but I happen to think it's not. Paralipsis is anti-tautological: I am not this thing I am about to sound like. [Says the thing anyways] "That being said..." however is a way to pretend you're one thing when you're really saying the other. "That being said..." is rhetorical trick but a different one--you think you heard the first thing, but really the "that being said..." clause disqualified everything said before it. On the other hand a paralipsis is all about disqualifying your most obvious objection to what they're about to say (usually that it comes from a completely discredited philosophy).
2 days 3 hours ago	The concept of taking HTTV	The concept of taking HTTV indie was discussed at a tailgate early in the 2011 season, however Brian and I hashed out all the details over a Michigan softball game. It was early in the year for it to be 70 and sunny, but 70 and sunny it was. Blazingly sunny. It's hard to remember there are crappy things in the world when you see Michigan's softball team play. It's an entire team full of Denards.
2 days 7 hours ago	I've been into Superman	I've been into Superman longer than I've been into Michigan. I read the comics for far longer than a regular maturity grade should have made me stop. And I think either a lot of you guys are being too sarcastic, or we have very different ideas about movies, because I thought Man of Steel was one of the worst pieces of shit I've ever seen. Yes, as a matter of fact, after Lord of the Rings and The Dark Knight I DO expect Shakespeare, or at least at attempt at having the plot and characters not be recycled canned spam from every goddamn Transformers crap blockbuster ever. This movie is no more deep than a successories poster: vivid imagery overlaid with inanity that people who've never had a thought provoked are meant to think is thought-provoking. I submit for example: Ursa (or whatever, if she had a name other than the one from the comics and II, I missed it) is going on a punching-everybody-to-death-except-the-one-military-guy-we-are-supposed-to-empathise-with and delivers this little bit of expose' to explain the bad guys' moral position: "Evolution will always win!" Other grave sins: Jor-El suddenly has a flying insect riding beast, and can jump into the air Jedi-style and be caught by this thing. Who the fuck let George Lucas in here? The mythology of Superman is one of balance between his two worlds: Kyrpton and Kansas, and Metropolis is the combination of those two worlds. This balance is at the core of Superman mythology. Yet in this film, Metropolis is nothing but a playground to wreck, then wreck again, then wreck a third time after it's already wrecked (and then go to work in right afterwards as if the city getting leveled was just another day. Too much importance is placed on Kansas (even tagging him with their sports teams). This is bad characterization. This isn't a down-home boy who learned everything from his country father who sacrificed himself to keep the secret that everybody is now finding out--oh well. The character needs to have a greater world view. He needs to think he's too big for his hometown, and his home state, etc. because he is too big for all those things. The Metropolis part of his personality is a huge part of what makes the Superman character more than a strong guy in a leotard. The screenwriter ought to know something about that. David Goyer is an Ann Arbor (Huron) kid who went to USC. I am hereby writing off anything Goyer writes in the future. Chris Nolan kicked Goyer to the curb when he went to write The Dark Knight, which was better than the first movie, which was Nolan's vision mostly. I bet I can go back and point directly to the parts of Batman Begins that were Goyer's. Like Katie Holmes  They can't decide if he's a Kansas or KState fan. ANY college sports fan will tell you that is impossible. Even if he was the kind of person to care about sports (he isn't because he could whup all of them if he wanted to and he isn't vain enough to want to), he'd have a side, and certainly his dad would have a side. Everyone keeps going back to the Kent house. If the whole world doesn't know Clark Kent=Superman the whole world is dumber than the writers thought their audience would be. Lois acts like anything BUT a journalist, and the military guys are happy to drive her wherever she wants to go. Including the Kents' house. So so so much more. Argh. The Batman Trilogy, especially The Dark Knight, made me believe again that our civilization's greatest myths could be treated in our civilization's greatest art form with more than slam-bang-smooch-cheap laugh half-assed crap like Man of Steel that care more about reaching key demographics than how to tell a story.

My mom lived upstairs in the house owned by the same Crazy Jim when she was in school, and she and her roommates claim to have most of the original set. My collection sucks. I have every edition of HTTV. woo. I do have some pieces of Tiger Stadium (a piece of the batter's box, one of the locks for the dugout, and a seat) from shooting a film there a day before they knocked down the last part.

5 days 21 hours ago	Wormley actually is the guy	Wormley actually is the guy who shot past him as juniors. There are guys every year like this: an early growth spurt kid who people look at and say "that guy could really be something if he keeps growing." Then he doesn't keep growing. M-Rob was similar: he was the top-rated soph in Florida at one point I believe. But he didn't have the speed to be a superstar safety. Michigan was hoping he would grow into an awesome Spur. He didn't, so that was that. With Gant, if he is growing out if safety, that's a good thing for him, if not the safety depth. When they moved Isaiah Bell to LB it was because Bell ate himself out of his best projected position. When they moved Brandin Hawthorne to WLB it was because he lacked the athleticism to compete at safety but neither did they think he could regularly take on blockers. A move to SAM is kind of like Spur--but in this defense it means lots of attacking. Gant's profile was of a slower safety who is an excellent technician at tackling, and a real program guy who will work his ass off. SAM just says what we all knew about his athleticism while leaving it wide open for him to become an edge-setting guy who can cover any tight end. If the opponent goes 3-wide it'll be the nickel in there for him anyway. I am fine with this move. The coaches are bringing in a lot of rangy safeties of the kind who don't become linebackers. Whatever caused Stevie Brown and Ryan Mundy not to succeed here, that probably left with Ron English and Tony Gibson. I understand the paranoia because so many safeties and a hating god, but rationally there doesn't seem to be a reason the guys we have and the guys we are recruiting won't be okay by next year.

Michigan ran a lot of cover 1 in 1997 but it was really a cover 2 with the safety to Woodson's side coming up against the run cause he wasn't needed. These days teams with an awesome safety run quarters and have that guy start low to take away the run and cover a deep quarter as well. Woodson could tackle well but to be an Eric Berry/Ed Reed kind of guy means having Kovacsian tackling ability. Those guys can cover really really well, but not to the elite degree Woodson could in his 20s. Either way you are adding an 8th run defender while trusting your star guy to not ever get burned deep. Really it's about whether your star is better at coverage (Woodson) or tackling.

Did my biases color my response? I'm sure they did. Deadspin has pulled this shit before--remember when the exposed the sex life of some woman who just works at ESPN?--and then this created a storm that helped shape how people characterize blogs. Also I'm a human with my own biases. Certain things bother me more than others, and one of those things is when peoples' private lives are exposed and held up for public ridicule by a tabloid merchant posing as a journalist. Remember that show To Catch a Predator? I wanted to boil everyone involved with that show alive. I thought it was the most disgusting thing Western culture has ever produced. And that was targeting friggin' child rapists. This "investigation" targeted just TV personalities, and not just the one you named. I don't know if Deadspin has changed the article since or something, but the one I read was very clearly something I would expect any MGoReader to immediately say "this is an awful miscarriage of journalism," not post it on the site.

I mean, hey, I could go look up any poster on this site, find them on Facebook, and start calling their friends and employers and other associates, and then publish the dirtiest stuff I could find so we could gain a better understanding of where that poster is coming from when they inform us of their opinions on this year's offensive line. But the relevency is tiny next to the massive embarassment I'd be setting that reader up for. Deadspin didn't target ESPN to perform a public service; they did it because exposing the sex lives of famous people is titillating.

We made it two days with everyone realizing it was best to ignore it. Honestly, people who are so curious they have to go look it up are going to find out and look it up eventually. I had to go read it to know what it was I was banning but if I hadn't I would be among those who went and looked it up as well. Most people however I think are looking for some triage when someone posts a link to something, and for them usually "I highly recommend skipping this" is enough.

The difference in the end was I understood the OP was the guy who made the film (I think -- like the email addresses match but that's all the research I did). Also I didn't think anyone could get hurt. It has nothing to do with why people come to this site, except it was a late night OT post and if that thing goes viral people on the board at least can be like "oh that's a guy from the board I visit all the time" and maybe feel a little better for being a total internet geek. As to comparing this article to that, there's a MASSIVE difference. What put the gender communication video on edge is that it's just off topic. The measure of on-topic-ness of the Deadspin article isn't in question--news about the people who cover college football is on topic enough. What got this hammered was that it was highly unethical. You don't go around ruining peoples' personal lives for your own gain, and you don't assist others in doing that.

I was wondering if you had an opinion on who was at fault for missing the backside assignment. It looked like both Schofield and Omameh thought they were picking up a blitz from the WILL (who showed and backed off after the snap). Did they think they read a zone blitz from there or something?
