I remember being soaked to the bone in the student section, and I was sitting pretty high up (one of our group failed to mention he had freshman status so we were in the 90s) with the wind on us. During halftime a bunch of us huddled under a poncho and smoked cigarettes which in retrospect was probably really dumb.
|10 hours 51 min ago||Except players would have to||
Except players would have to cosy up to sponsors to get anywhere. There are sports that work mostly on a sponsorship basis, and in those sports players are herded out of high schools into prep schools so they can get noticed. The goal is to empower the players, not create an oligarchy.
The whole point of college football is to be the pinko heaven of sports. You can watch the best 1500 athletes play for relatively equally talented teams and be bombarded with ads and massive ticket prices; that's the NFL. College football is the public space: you sit on a bench on publicly granted land on the campus of a publicly owned institution with 111,000 other people sitting on benches, and you watch exhuberant young adults who picked their own schools, and the 92% of those who aren't going to be amont the 1500 best athletes still get to be one of a shrinking group of people with college degrees and good connections and no debt.
My problem is they've privatized the things that make money for administrators and price it like a capital good while trying to maintain the same communist standards for everyone else. So now we've got the prices and iniquity of a free market combined with the corrupt bureaucracy and dehumanizing unfairness of a state-controlled market. Basically they've made it the worst of both worlds.

Were those 4th years or 5th years? Many students get through 8 semesters and then have to come back in fall for a few last credits. I needed one last class to complete my major but had enough credits to graduate so I took the one class and some BS classes to maintain my full-time student status and further de-weight the grades from my stoner sophomore year. Senioritis isn't reserved for athletes--those guys were at least spending hours and hours at the thing they planned to do after college and lots of money depended on them doing well. I watched a lot of Lord of the Rings and went to see local bands.

That was funny. She was pretty upset about it though.

In the micro: Lewan played with a "nasty streak" in 3/4 games against MSU, and was a dick in the last. Rubbing a facemask in the ground after a guy tried to break your arm: football. The shit he was pulling against MSU last year: inexcusable, and definitely not football.

Because young players progress way faster than old players. And their young players were Spence and Bosa and Washington. And their old player is Bennett. Normal improvement from those guys from last year and things look ugly. Actually things were ugly last season but the defensive line was mitigated a lot by poor secondary play.
Remember when Michigan had RVB and Brandon Graham and Mike Martin and Craig Roh as their DL and we said "this should be a good DL" and then that defense went to crap? It turns out those were pretty good defensive linemen, but the rest of the defense wasn't very good so they could be mostly skipped.
OSU's guys are better than any of the guys above except Brandon Graham. Bennett's a strong candidate be the first DT off the board in next year's draft. Normal progression for Bosa and Spence gets one or both into that Brandon Graham range. And Washington is moving to 3-tech but they liked him there so much they moved a really good space-eating NT to offensive line because he wasn't needed anymore once they saw Washington.

I spent so long trying to find a good digital release format. Then I had this conversation with Brian:
Ultimately an unprotected PDF can go on pretty much any device--it's just under 10 MB so I even got it on my Kindle, though it's hard to read on there.

Hey no offense taken--not everything we do is gonna be everyone's cup of tea. You're right we could have used this time to make other content. Since our competitive nature had us using way more personal than MGoTime to do it, we're not talking all that much content. But if you were a drinking buddy of mine AND you don't get anything out of these articles then you really should complain because I've been staying home watching video of Nebraska offensive linemen instead of hanging out or returning phone calls.
I do think you've missed the point if you think this is about drafting fantasy teams. It's not a fantasy league--it's our goofy format for the MGoBlog 2014 Big Ten Preview. You're getting this instead of "Top 20 offensive linemen in the Big Ten this year" etc. You're supposed to walk away able to watch a Wisconsin game and say intelligent things about them.

That's ridiculous. Hollis wanted to be in the West with like nobody but that was shot down. From appearances he did go in with an agenda to get MSU fans what they wanted, which you can't fault him for. He was also in a better position since Michigan has another rivalry it needs to protect more, and I don't doubt Rutgers and Maryland were clamoring to have Mich and OSU games.
|4 days 13 hours ago||You can help me search: it||
You can help me search: it was an interview with Hollis. They were asked to put down what was non-negotiable and Hollis has no idea what Brandon wrote but it's a good guess it was Michigan-Ohio State in same division and playing the last day of the season. Then I guess there was a dinner or something where everyone was told how the decision was to be made and they got to give input on a couple alignments and scheduling plans (9 games, protected crossovers). Then later they got back an a, b, or c schedule and rated them individually. Then they got the resulting schedules. Then Brandon supposedly complained and was told it was too late. It's hard to know what DB did since I only have
|4 days 13 hours ago||Actually he stretched the||
Actually he stretched the truth there. There were several options and several rounds. Brandon didn't voice complaint until it was too late. That's why Michigan's "thing" is having played both OSU and MSU on the road or home every year, and Minnesota's thing is just having to play two games in a row at Michigan (when Michigan played two in a row at Minnny in '02 and '03).
It wasn't just some firm in Chicago who wrote a computer program. They were given input.

Nothing new. Wojo was picked for this so they'd be assured of softball questions and no follow-up when there was a dodge; at one point WoJo himself repeated the myth that Brandon should be credited for the stadium expansions when those renovations were Bill Martin's. I don't like that WoJo started with the tired coach hot seat shit because it seems like they only did that at the beginning to frame the opposition to Brandon as a reactionary tinfoil hat society. From reading this article it would seem that bloggers' biggest complaints are 7-6 seasons and fireworks. fireworks got three words on the front page of the site. So I'm really disappointed that WoJo was chosen to do this interview because he did the worst possible job anyone could do with the opportunity.
As for Dave Brandon it's his same explanations (eg he's still deluding himself that the fans he priced out and ran off really left for 50-inch plasmas) except the MSU one, where he compared MSU switching to OSU years to Minnesota playing at Michigan twice, though I totally understand this isn't the spot to scream at the big ten's idiocy for hiring "Chicago computer guys"-- Brandon is referencing a conversation that took place far later than his opportunity to do something, btw. He's building a strawman; nobody's claiming it was a conspiracy--the allegation is Dave Brandon was asleep at the wheel and allowed this to happen out of his own incompetence. There were a bunch of options they were given and DB wasn't paying attention according to Hollis.
The life after sports initiative got way too little play. It's not Dave's pet but he's behind it and this interview would have been the perfect vehicle to use it for positioning Michigan as the program that's leading the way in providing lifetime support to its athletes.
|1 week 1 day ago||I'm not saying he sucks,||
I'm not saying he sucks, though. I'm saying I have a completely different list based on how effective a guy would be in my offense, and on all the video I watched Cobb was a downhill bulldozer who got his first five yards courtesy of Epping more than his own acceleration.
That zero-to-sixty is gold to a zone running offense. By the time I got to Clement all of those guys except James and Elliot were off the board. And to me Clement looked like an exact replica of Tevin Coleman.
|1 week 1 day ago||The "political reasons" thing||
The "political reasons" thing is an incorrect assumption. Most of what I knew from Dave Brandon before was I knew someone who worked closely with Domino's corporate while he was there, and was mostly related to how he dealt with co-workers and employees--not so much about people who buy pizzas. However the spot we started from was his handling of Stretchgate, which was exemplary. You're not speaking to somebody predisposed to hate DB; you're speaking to an apostate. We were his biggest supporters, until the overwhelming facts caused a slow but definitely stark conversion.
It's not just a rich/poor thing. The old guard who are allowed close to Brandon were the first to report smoke, which nobody believed for a year until it started accumulating.
So, no, it's not politics or predisposition powering the vitriol. But we can keep checking these boxes off until you believe me that Dave Brandon being an awful AD is the reason people keep saying he's an awful AD.

|1 week 4 days ago||Riiight. That. Damn you,||
Damn you, statistically best QB in the conference who left because he didn't want to split time with the statistically second best QB in the conference I still have!
Don't underrate Jones; he's the Junior Hemingway of that offense; the other guys are the short-range dink-n-dunk targets. And don't underestimated the combo of Smith's downfield threat and Sudfeld's downfield accuracy, especially when that makes space for Venric Mark and Corey Clement to operate. I leapt at what I thought was the best space athlete in the conference, and because of that Mark's been unfairly downgraded when before his injury he was better than Shane Wynn and more marketable than Josh Ferguson and Dontre Wilson. In retrospect I could have had both Wisconsin RBs and gotten, if not Mark or Wynn, then one of those other guys later. Or Trae Waynes. I'm somewhat less horrified at my one bad pick now that dudes like Caputo and Rush and Murray and Longa have fallen to me so late.
I totally agree this offense needs some pieces: a route-ninja slot to complement Jones, and an unguardable tight end target, and most of all a new Roberson, but where can you find a passer as efficient as Devin Gardner with the legs of Braxton Miller and the zone-read proficiency (a vastly underrated skill) of Roberson? As you've said, Braxton Miller and Devin Gardner came off the board before I even got my first pick.
Then again if I could find such things, well, with that offensive line...
