- Reader argues with the conclusion of a Jimmystats article. I argue back until the reader's case is thoroughly trashed.
- Reader posts a diary trying to refute the Jimmystats article, ignoring the argument in the comments. I argue with him again, even more thoroughly trashing his argument. He never addresses the points I give in refutation, but his replies do get more aggressive.
- Reader posts a board thread accusing the MGostaff of (in meaner words) being non-receptive to disagreement. That thread is taken down.
- Reader comes to Moderator Sticky and complains that his first amendment rights were violated and that he has a "right" to "believe" something other than the "official gospel" of MGoBlog, gets sent to Bolivia (points reduced so he can't create threads anymore, but can still participate on the blog).

I pulled one play from that game for a future Neck Sharpies but Wormley did great on that one. I thought Henry and Hurst were getting abused by this because they were going upfield without affecting the blocker.
|5 days 47 min ago||Yeah but we're not going to||
Yeah but we're not going to teach all the intricacies of zone combo blocking. This post is not meant for the coaching types, obviously. I imagine a pure reach block is rare indeed--you always get a little help from your friends because in zone you have to read the gap the defenders are attacking. As someone else mentioned, if the DT slants Braden has to take him and Cole can release on the MLB.
I just don't want to super confuse people. As Michigan's blocking gets more skilled they'll execute more interesting stuff and we'll be pointing out this or that guy is good because he reached a dude. That's what this is for.

Glad you like it.
1. Usually they are strategic. In the case above Michigan is blocking like it's a zone-read but rather than optioning the DE they are reach blocking with Cole to seal that DE and DT both with one block, and blocking the rest like inside zone. A zone stretch might try to reach block with everybody on the line, and then each OL combo make tactical decisions based on how the DL lines up and reacts to blocking.
2. He can try. Once Glasgow has thrown the guy off balance and a yard away though that guy's dead.
3. I think I might address that in the future with an article on slanting. If the DL slants playside you can't really reach block him. If he slants under you then really your reach block just did him a favor since he intends to be on that side. This is one of those times where offensive linemen have to think on their feet and know what's happening to them. A really good offensive lineman who runs a lot of Zone will instantly recognize the slant and either quick seal or bury the guy coming into him, or ride the slanting DL out of his hole. At that point you are just using the DL's momentum against them. Still that proper reaction just puts you back to rock in rock. You called scissors and then had to abandon it because they called Rock. RPS-1
All these videos are on either my account or Brian's except for the tutorial. Brian did a lot of these articles back in 2007 and 2008 and those articles are pretty much dead now because the links are all dead and we can do so much more with video now in higher-quality. If we have to write these again in 8 or 9 years that's the internet.

Weirdly for Michigan, none of those teams had a linebacker who'd really make a huge difference.
Are we supposing the player was on the team last year, or are we plopping a guy into this offense as a special Michigan State eligibility 9th year grad transfer scenario? Gardner with a year under Harbaugh would be special--Space Coyote's ass had a point or two but I think the overall argument sucks as much as Devin Gardner didn't.
Gardner's legs are better than Kaepernick's, and that changes the dynamics. Plus, we saw the Ohio State and Notre Dame games in 2013, when Gardner was making pre-snap calls and running simple plays and most post-snap reads were all "did Gallon stop there?" Harbaugh's offense isn't nearly as complex as Borges's, and most of the reads and calls are made pre-snap, something Gardner was much better at than the Borgesian post-snap progressions.
Gardner after 2014 was a mess though, and it was going to take at least a year to clean that game up. So if we're taking the grad transfer definition, it's Lewan. I trust Harbaugh will get a QB ready by the time we need one, and while Molk was a better college player, keeping Cole at center makes up the difference.

Most of my part of this week's post I wrote from the backseat of a car on my android. Kinda--I'd already written up Ricky Jones and waited until slot receivers were coming off the board to spend the draft pick on him.
My time commitment to this (which might have, say, plausibly gone to a Neck Sharpies) was mostly watching Nebraska footage. In the process I gained a better feel for MSU's linebackers, Wisconsin's offensive line situation, and how Iowa calls offensive plays. This was all on "off hours" since my daytimes are mostly managing the site's business, clientete, and events.
The reason we are so prepared to talk about teams Michigan hasn't seen in years is because we put in that time to scout. For me personally, I would have spent that time playing NCAA 14 rather than watch Nebraska games if I wasn't motivated to solve my rush end problem when Ace jumped on the guy I was targeting. If you read this article and pass along to a friend that Newby is a really good player on Nebraska, and he blows up for 20 TFLs this year, you'll look pretty smart. If you'd done the same last year after I did even more scouting on Joe Schobert (for the same problem) you'd be hanging that prediction over your friends' heads right now.
And if you don't care, just don't read the post. There's an early jump and other stuff to read here.

Look where Wilson is starting though. His bad angle made it worse, but you can't possibly expect him to come from 20 yards back to fill this before it's gone 8 yards. That's why it's an RPS play: Michigan is sitting in their base cover 1 with Wilson so far back he's not able to help.

|2 weeks 3 days ago||The link in question was a||
The link in question was a video that I watched 5 minutes of and didn't sense any effort. Nothing about making it a video made the content any more useful; it just had guys talking so the audience is more captive. If there was good info in there that I missed from someone qualified to generate it, I suggested the OP summarize and repost.
The B/R rule came about because Bleacher Report was blatantly ripping our stuff, and because they're the industry leaders in SEO and #content over content. Every once in awhile I check back in to see if they've decided to use all that capital to add something valuable, and have yet to find it. But the door stays open.

|2 weeks 4 days ago||Censorship is about||
Censorship is about controlling ideas--moderating is about controlling noise. The point is to have a board that doesn't annoy and turn off readers. If you're coming to MGoBlog every day and finding:
a) Drew Sharp claiming Harbaugh is washed up
b) Chatsports claiming Tom Brady did copious amounts of heroin at Michigan, and
c) A Bleacher Report clickbait slideshow of the 10 Guys We Could Think Of
...then you will shortly be a) pissed off, b) malinformed, and c) annoyed.
Then say you found a substantive article on Rivals and want to post it because they got a quote from a Michigan coach that totally refutes something I wrote in the last Neck Sharpies, and don't notice that it was posted 4 hours ago already because it's been shoved off the radar by all that crap.
Our value proposition to readers is you should come here expecting to find high-minded Michigan content that takes a lot of effort to produce. A lot of other sites' value proposition is they can use psychology to trick readers into giving them clicks for minimal effort.
I doubt you'll find a site more open to our conclusions being challenged. Most cries of "censorship" around here come from someone who gets a negative reaction from saying something incredibly dumb. Por ejemplo this actual exchange:
Note that nothing of his was deleted until he went into "I DON'T NEED A POINT I HAVE A RIGHT TO MAKE SHIT UP!" mode. When the only good thing we can all agree on about your opinion is that you have the right to have one, you lose the right to annoy everyone with it here. We'll put up with, and even try to reason with, just about everything up to that point.
