Jolly Pumpkin is definitely overrated

From a townie - Jolly Pumpkin is definitely overrated.   Their beer isn't very good and the service is always bad.   Definitely better beer options - Ashleys, HopCat, Arbor Brewing Company.

read the article or the gofundme page

"When I was on vacation this year, my family and I were able to see a large troop of howler monkeys.  Howlers are the loudest sound in nature, with their howls topping out at about 140 decibels, about the same as a jet engine.

This troop traveled through our resort, from nesting to feeding areas.

In the late morning, when the grounds crew was working, the crew would use leaf blowers to clear the walks.

The blowers made the howlers crazy!  They'd hoot, holler, and howl at the grounds crew, screaming in competition with the leaf blowers.  The overall cacophony was unreal.

Lots of noise, but nothing was accomplished."

I have season seats in I have season seats in section 8 for last two years. Pretty sure the sound only comes from the north end zone scoreboard. Seems like when the wind blows north, it brings the sound out and you can't hear anything.

quality stuff

If they are doing a stock the bar, then they must be interested in real cocktails, so definitely no flavored mixers or spirits. (bleh).

I prefer Rye - it's hearty enough to stand up to a variety of other liquors (bourbon can edge towards too sweet).  You can't go wrong with high-quality gin too.  If you are in Michigan, you could send some Gin from the new Ann Arbor Distillery, which is AWESOME.

Here are a couple of favorite recipes that fulfill a variety of tastes - you could give the recipe(s) with all of the ingredients.  :)  The ingredients are pretty common ones, and should be available in any quality booze store.

Sazarac (seriously the best)

  • 2 oz rye
  • 1/4 oz simple syrup
  • 4 dashes Peychaud's Bitters
  • rinse  glass with absinthe
  • combine all ingredients with ice, stir, strain into glass, garnish with lemon twist

Cocktail a la Louisiane (Sazarac variant, but sweeter and yummy)

  • 1 oz rye
  • 1 oz Benedictine
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • 4 dashes absinthe (~1/2 tsp)
  • 4 dashes Peychaud's Bitters
  • combine all ingredients with ice, stir, strain into glass, garnish with brandied cherry

Southside (like a gin mojito!)

  • 2 oz gin
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup
  • 4-5 mint leaves (plus 1sprig to garnish)
  • combine in shaker w/ ice.  Shake, strain, garnish with mint sprig

Blanche Dubois (sooo good.  sweet.  sort of like cotton candy in a boozy way)

  • 1 strawberry
  • 2 oz gin
  • 1/2 oz orange curacao
  • 1/2 oz Orgeat
  • 3/4 oz lemon juice
  • 6-8 mint leaves (+ 1 sprig to garnish)
  • muddle strawberry in shaker.   add remaining ingredients to shaker with ice.  shake well, double strain into ice-filled glass.   Garnish with mint sprig)
LOVE Campari.....   Fernet is

LOVE Campari.....   Fernet is a wilder acquired taste (think menthol toothpaste) and maybe better for someone to buy on their own, when they are ready.  :)

Had trouble finding it in the Had trouble finding it in the App Store, but if you search for "MichiganVR" (no spaces) it comes right up. Also, was trying to find it to download to my iPad, but it's an iPhone app only....

Harbaugh's response

from artlcle.  still on scholarship and counts towards scholarship limit.

"After consulting with our medical team, we do not think it is in Ondre's best interest as it relates to his health and welfare to play football, short or long term," Harbaugh said in a statement given to ESPN on Friday. "He remains on full scholarship and counts toward the 85 scholarship limit in pursuit of graduation from the University of Michigan."

so.... nothing to see here - move along?  or not....

So many typos. I'm Using So many typos. I'm Using voice recognition on the app. It's a total fail. Camp Michigania is on the shores of Walloon Lake, near Petosky.

I can't believe nobody I can't believe nobody mentioned Camp Michigania! If you are an alumni, it is totally worth joining the alumni Association in order to be able to go to the camp. It's on the shores of while Loonlake, up near Petoskey. One of the most beautiful places in a great place for family camping surrounded by other diehard wolverines. The kids all mass together to swim and canoe. The adults hang out together or doing their own thing. Meals are included; it's very price competitive. One of the most beautiful places in the northern lower peninsula we are lucky to have it belonging to the university.

the HS coach's statements are suspect

In the Freep article about this case, Coach Harvel says:

"Dennis had a 3.0 average and he had 90 credits, but they weren't toward any major,'' Harvel said. "No psych courses, no math. He wants to be a special education teacher and help kids. My problem was the credits he had weren't toward a major.''

I know from my work at the U, that NCAA rules have regular checks that students are actively progressing towards their degree in order to be eligible to play - this includes the milestone of declaring a major by their Junior year.  Of course, I have no knowledge of Norfleet's specific information, but the coach's comments seem impossible.

I think there coach is creating a bunch of smoke to mask a different fire.

BTW, I graduated from UM with no psych or math courses, so there is also that....

As of yesterday I'm a new season ticket holder. So excited! As of yesterday I'm a new season ticket holder. So excited!

Big Butter Jesus is better

The singer is a "comic musician", Heywood Banks (he was just at the Ark in Ann Arbor).  A better song, of his is Big Butter Jesus about the 60 foot statue off of I-75 in Ohio that burned down a couple of years ago....

Don't know that much about

Don't know that much about it, but from what I can find, it seems that the "NCA" competition that Michigan keeps winning is the lesser of the two  cheerleading competitions.   I think the "UCA" competition has the stronger reputation.

Seems analagous to claiming you are national champions, when you win the NIT basketball tourney.  Strictly interpreting you are correct in making that announcement, but not really...

They're using the hashtag They're using the hashtag #Fab25 on Twitter when talking about commitments. I assumed that was the size of the recruiting class for 2016?

Color change isn't by accident

Two or three years ago, the University had an official committee to develop a campus-wide brand in preparation for the new Capital Campaign.  Part of this was to have a university-wide agreement on exactly what shade of yellow "maize" was.  Athletics was part of this negotiation.  It was determined that THESE were the "maize" and "blue" colors of Michigan.  http://vpcomm.umich.edu/brand/style-guide/design-principles/colors

Units have been given a period of time to phase in the new colors.  Moving forward you should see much less variation  in the color "maize".

The problem is that The problem is that university had never officially declared what actual Pantone color yellow "maize" was. When the university re-did their logo/branding a couple of years ago, one of the major issues was determining for once and for all what are the Pantone colors for UM's maize and blue. http://vpcomm.umich.edu/brand/style-guide/design-principles/colors. Apparently there was a lot of negotiation required, with athletics wanting a much more highlighter yellow color, and the rest of campus wanting much more orangey tone. The Pantone colors were what was finally agreed upon. Since then you've seen all of the athletic team colors revert back to a much more warm toned yellow. moving forward I would expect much more consistency.

my story

I grew up in NC, where you have to pledge your aliegence to either Duke, UNC, or NC State during your 4th grade year.  Became a big Duke fan because I like underdogs.... and then they hired Coach K.

My dad and godparents both went to Michigan and the night my acceptance letter came, an inpromptu sing-a-long broke out around the piano with them singingall of the old glee club songs.  I never really had a fighting chance to go somewhere else.

Came to UM right after the BB national championship (which I took as an omen that I had made the right college choice).  The first big home game was an overtime win against Duke.  My allegience was no longer in question.

During my college days went to the Gator Bowl, Rose Bowl, multiple GLI's at the Joe, and was in New Orleans for the Chris Webber Time-out.  This southern girl learned about hockey from her Stockwell hallmate and enjoyed many a bench clearing brawl between UM & MSU.

My college roommate and I still arrange our bi-annual visits around Michigan sports.  She comes to Michigan timed with a home football game.  She moved to Texas right before the Cowboy Classic, so it was a great excuse to see her family, new house, and then watch our team get beat up by Alabama.

Michigan sports were a great background to my college experience, and as an alumna still is the thread that connects me to my college friends.

Go Blue!

yack

they look like bad swimtrunks...

maybe Hail & Unite is a reaction to the DJ music

It occurs to me that maybe the Hail & Unite push is actually a reflection of wanting to fill the game airways with something other than Seven Nation Army and the Blues Brothers.  While I basically think the whole "give us money and we'll get Eminem to write us a pump-up song" is destined for failure, I do think there is a possibility of this continuing to curve the trajectory that has been such generic music at games (FB & BB mostly).  Children of Yost have been good at asserting themselves at the games in such a way that the use of pipped in music there is kept to a minimum.

At least this pipped in music wouldn't be borrowed from Penn State (who figured out the awesomeness of the White Stripes) and Duke (who has been doing the Blue Brothers dance since the 80s).   Makes UM look lame to repeat it.

Seriously, that hat pic made my day. We're back! Seriously, that hat pic made my day. We're back!

don't forget

... and fundraising, don't forget the fundraising

OMG that graph

The Denard-Shirvell Scale of Douchiness has to be one of the best things I've ever seen on this website.

There hasn't been much There hasn't been much conversation about the letter that came out in the fall from all of the head coaches unanimously supporting Dave Brandon. Stockholm Syndrome? Coordinated by DB himself? True feeling from the coaches (similar to the feelings reflected by the players) that Dave was great? There's a story there.....

Mani Osteria (Liberty Mani Osteria (Liberty &Division) for great Italian food (and wood fired pizza); Mario Batali is a fan and it's always showing up on best food lists. Right next door is Isalita; owned by the same folk, but authentic, super yummy Mexican food.

newbie.

hint: played for 49ers

The picture didn't make it, but via the Wikipedia I could see that he played for HARBAUGH/49ers in 2011 & 2014.

Bring 'em on...

Approved block M? Given all of the university's focus on "branding", I can't believe they allowed the nonstandard block M to be used. Kind of like it though.
