I agree. I had a coach who did the same thing and it created divisions in the team. We had a player who broke drinking rules and the team voted on their suspension. It was uncomfortable and everyone knew who voted for and against it.
I don't think it takes anything away from Jabrill because what is impressive about this piece is Jabrill's life and everything he's overcome, but most of the content on The Players' Tribune is written by a staff of ghostwriters.

I think Jim Harbaugh is an incredible coach who knows how to recruit and develop talent and we are lucky to have him. I was just pointing out that Sherman may not have been the best candidate to put front and center as it's been well documented (at least in Seattle) that they didn't have a great relationship. Not all players and coaches get along and that's fine.
I'm not sure how Sherman would feel about being front and center on this graphic either. He doesn't have the best relationship with Harbaugh. Sherman and Doug Baldwin both blame Harbaugh for their low draft status and what he said or didn't say to NFL scouts about them.
Regardless, Harbaugh definitely knows how to develop talent as we've seen with this year's team. As a Michigan fan, I'm happy he's our coach and as a Seahawks fan, I'm happy Richard Sherman fell to the 5th round.

Great thread. My father runs an NGO in Nepal and because of this I've travelled and studied the country extensively. First off, I'd like to say that giving is clearly better than not giving at a time when the country clearly needs help, but not all NGO's in Nepal are equal in terms of how they spend their money and how much good they actually do on the ground.
For background, there are anywhere between 5,000-60,000 NGO's operating in Nepal and only 191 cities/ municipalities. Clearly not all of the NGO's there are legit and most of them even the big well-known ones (UNICEF and Save the Children) do little more than sit in vast compounds on the outskirts of Katmandu and conduct study after study. I'm happy to go into details if anyone is interested, but after meeting with UNICEF and Save the Children in Nepal, I will personally never give another dime to them. I'd rather have my money go to a charity that is actively feeding, housing, educating the population that they're supposed to be helping.
I also have mixed feeling about the Red Cross. They are better mobilized to do the heavy lifting on the ground that needs to be done, but their record is far from spotless.
I'm giving to Direct Relief because they have a team mobilized in the country and a good track record of delivering medical relief in disasters. My father's NGO is also setting up a fund that I plan to give to, but I'm not posting any info on this as I would rather recommend Direct Relief since I have no ties to them.

He was seriously considered for the Washington job last year and many insiders preferred him to Peterson. I would put him on the short-list of candidates for any HC vacancies.

I don't blame him for much of it since it is far too small a sample size and we don't know what constraints he's working with. He's only had spring and fall to try and install a new offense with players he didn't recruit and is just getting to know. He's working with a group of assistants who he hasn't worked with before and who may be grossly incompetent. It's a pretty tall order.

Keep in mind that in addition to base salary, there are also other benefits that frequently come with coaching gigs. Tennis camps are hugely lucrative and head coaches can usually bank on an additional 20-40k coming through this stream in the summer when school isn't in session.
I don't know about water polo, but in re: to men's tennis making the tournament isn't good enough. The ncaa field is 64 and the women's program is consistently top ten and wins the big ten regularly. There's no reason that the men should be barely making the tournament and not in the running for a big ten championship (dominated by Illinois and then Ohio State in recent years). Michigan has tradition and a top tier tennis facility. The only thing Michigan tennis has stacked against it is cold weather, but that's an issue for all big ten schools.
I'm actually happy to see Brandon make these kind of moves. Head coaches pay is ridiculous even in non-revenue sports and when you have the facilities and tradition that Michigan has finishing middle of the big ten year should never cut it. The expectation for revenue and non-revenue sports should be the same and a lot of the coaches that he's gotten rid of simply didn't show that much improvement year over year.
You could make the same claim re: player development about anyone on staff during the Carroll years. They had a ton of 5* kids and a ton of success, so that naturally equals a lot of players drafted. He is a good recruiter and did play a part in bringing in that talent, but I know that the last two years at USC (2012 & 2013) he completely lost the team. I had friends on the team and they didn't just dislike the guy, they hated him and it wasn't isolated to them. The whole team hated his guts. Kiffen would be a terrible decision for Michigan right now.
Lane did well for USC when he was surrounded by many other coaches as an assistant, but he lacks player development skills that are necessary for success at the college level. USC tanked the past two seasons prior to his firing because he was so unlikeable. His players at USC hated him and didn't start playing again until he was out. With so much development to do, he would be disastrous at Michigan.
Why do you think this would be a great hire? Besides his past two seasons at UCLA, Mazzone has been fired at every stop after 2-3 years. His resume reminds me a lot of Borges...
I'd be more interested in Mike Norvell from ASU than Mazzone.

Van Persie is a decent striker. Unfortunately he gets injured a lot.
What striker do you suggest they buy? There isn't a plethora of world-class strikers on the market (see Liverpool paying through the nose for Andy Carroll). Chamakh looked to be a good purchase this summer, but he never settled in the squad. As far as goal-keepers go, Szczesny is young and has been solid. Money would be much better spent adding some brutes to the midfield and on defense.

It's not choking when you have a squad with significantly less depth. Arsenal wouldn't even compete with the likes of Man U, Chelsea and now Man City if not for Arsene Wenger. I'm not an Arsenal fan though, so I would love for Kroenke to fire him and watch them plummet out of the top 4.
Oregon, Oregon State and Washington regularly sell-out their stadiums. By comparison the Big Ten can probably depend on Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin to regularly sell-out. I agree that the Big Ten has more rabid fans, but it's not that lop-sided.

I get your larget point. GERG's resume minus Syracuse was strong and ticked some of the same boxes (DC at major college program and NFL), however this is the first time in a few weeks that I've felt optimistic about anything Michigan football related, so I'm going to go with that for now.
Rich Rod and Brian Clough both share an offensive philosophy in their respective sports, but beyond that they couldn't be more polar opposites. Clough was an alcoholic and egomaniac who never endeared himself at Leeds United because he was so outspoken and made a point to bad-mouth Don Revie and his players. I've never heard anything remotely negative that Rich Rod has said re: Michigan or Carr. Rich Rod strikes me as an earnest/ humble guy. While these are both cases of classic change management, IMO the parallels are limited.

Nice to see Greg getting some recognition. I had the opportunity to work with Greg while at Michigan and he's someone I can honestly say changed my life and I think anyone who has spent some time with him would say the same. He makes you better on and off the field.
I'm curious did you ever see the documentary "who killed the electric car?" focusing on the GM EV1. They seemed to come to the conclusion that it was a combination of california consumers, car companies unwilling to really go "all in" on the product marketing and eventually Dick Cheney and the US Government who all conspired to kill it. Anyhow, definitely an aside although parallels to M football exist.
As a general rule, I don't like past players saying negative things about the current players and/ or coach. If this was on his personal facebook, it's a bit different but privacy isn't what it used to be and you should be aware.

I was around the athletic dept in the early 00s and there was definitely an attitude and complacency held by coaches that michigans name should recruit by itself. It's pretty much the Michigan man belief applied to recruits- Michigan should only consider kids that only want to go Michigan. It seems ok, but true blue chips will have other equally attractive options and need to be actively recruited. I didnt have much visibility into football or basketball, but in other sports i saw coaches take middle of the pack kids instead of going after a blue chip that they might have to work harder to land.
<br>To win big games and compete in championships, you need to land top blue chips in every class and occasionally sell Michigan to them

Vince Howard was unbelievable for East Dillon. I'm still upset Michigan couldn't pry him out of Texas.

Yes lots of teams do this now. I know the USC men's tennis team has done this in the past too.
