QBR for the game 53.1 which tells you his stats are overinflated. 72 yards and a TD of his stats came from one pass which was on a 3rd and 12 early in the game.
I would say that BC did a pretty good job against PSU if you take that one pass out of the equation it took almost 50 other passes to get 300 yards passing including OT.
Michael Brewer's QBR was 33.1.
This is all pretty meaningless though since we can't really judge a DC based on a few games otherwise, we should have fired Durkin after OSU.
Sometimes we look for stats to back up our opinion and ignore stats that may tell a different story. Perhaps, fans of this move are doing the same. But it seems an awful lot like you are trying to find fault in this hire by any means necessary. Finally, we need to consider relational stats......we do need to consider what he gets out of what he has. Not fair to compare apples to apples for a guy like Durkin at UF vs a guy like Brown at BC. I don't think ANYONE can argue this guy has overachieved to a major degree with the talent he's had.

Rudock is giving us more than we got at the position last year. For sure.
However, when most of the superlatives thrown around about him revolve around the fact he hasn't "been that bad ", it'll be nice to have a QB back there that has the potential to be more than "not that bad".

But for next year, I do think there is more than a remote chance that Taysom Hill is the QB I he decides to come back (at age 26!) thanks to his relationship with Harbaugh and the prestige of the b-school, until he gets hurt and O'Korn can take us home. That would be really interesting......

The junior quarterback ran 65 yards for one touchdown, threw 16 yards on a scramble for another and hooked up with Shane Wynn for completions of 56 and 59 yards, leading the cream past the crimson 24-14 in Saturday's annual spring game. A year ago, the big question was whether Roberson could regain his form after missing most of 2012 with a broken left leg. Having a full offseason to focus on football, rather than rehab, has changed everything. "It helps a lot with helping to be myself," he said. "Last year, I was a little slow in thinking, so it helps out a lot."

STRENGTHS: Malzone is a pocket passer who will make quick decisions with the football and handle pressure in front of him. Gets to drop point quickly and in balance. Shows the ability to be in balance on the run to get the ball out quickly. ... AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: Moves well in the pocket but may not be a threat to extend a lot of plays with his feet. ... BOTTOM LINE: Malzone has good arm strength and accuracy from within the pocket. May need to grow a few inches but could be a Division I prospect in time.

The last of the elite possibilities is 6'2" 190 pound Alex Malzone of Brother Rice HS in Bloomfield, MI. Coming from the most dominant program in Michigan, he's a winner, but there's more than that. The thing that jumps out the most about him is his arm. The ball absolutely jumps from of his hand effortlessly. That means his mechanics are impressive, too. And that arm strength comes in a 190 pound package. Once he gets bigger and stronger his arm will become even better. The good news for Pitt is that since he's not big, he may not get a lot of big time offers. He already holds offers from seven MAC programs, but bigger programs will offer once they see him throw in person. He did throw at Michigan, and got raves. He is under consideration for a Wolverine offer, and is also being monitored by the likes of Michigan State, Penn State, and Ohio State. But he did visit Pitt on junior day recently and said it was the best place he's been to.
Alex is a clutch player and rose to the occasion each week against quality competition. Teams knew he was a big time player and they were still unable to slow him down. His poise and confidence in the pocket are qualities that the great quarterbacks possess. His arm strength and accuracy are what is getting him national attention.
I think your comments match what a lot of scouting reports say.
He's not an elite runner and may be on the short side (about 6'1").
But good arm, high football IQ, quick decision maker, prides himself on making good reads, very accurate. Sounds exactly what we have lacked the past couple years although athleticism from our QBs have carried us at times.
MSU seems to have gotten a really good one in Lewerke. Malzone vs. Lewerke would be a heck of match-up in a couple years.
But based on Malzone's recent performances at a regional and national level, he is definitely due an upgrade and should trend up. I would be surprised if he wasn't a consensus 4 star by all services by year end.
They've sent out quite a few QB offers already, and just watched Malzone throw among others. Like I said, if there is a better option out there that has indicated HIGH interest, terrific. But QB is not the position to extend the evaluation process out for too long. I have a personal preference for the kid but if the staff likes someone better that is close to committing, let's put the full court press on right now.
Sounds like if he is visiting this week, he very well may be their choice. In my non-expert opinion, I think he'll be a terrific QB. Otherwise, this entire thread can be used years down the row as a heaping helping of crow.
Even if we fall in love with another QB in a few months, most likely that QB WON'T be an option because he's already committed somewhere else or already has relationships with schools that already offered.

44 TDs and averaged 9 yards a carry. Combined, Damien Harris and Jones combined for 89(!) TDs last year. Yeah, it's HS and different level of competition but damn........
When I think sleeper, I think walk-on (like Glasgow) or more like former walk-ons like Glasgow and Reynolds. However, a walk-on at a skill position is even more rare.
Just by virtue of lack of depth, you have to think Joe Reynolds is a sleeper.
Decent speed, decent height, might be a deep threat.
Or what about Jeremy Jackson. 6-3, might be a decent red zone target?

QB - Better. Devin is more experienced and fits the offense. Depth is a concern but could Shane be worse than Bellomy was last year?
RB - Better. Fitz is back. Green/Smith/Rawls/Johnson/Hayes are a much better supporting group.
TE - Better. Funchess and Butt plus a better offense for Funchess.
WR - ???? Who knows. Gallon and Dileo are back. Roundtree and technically Gardner are missing. Reynolds/Chesson/Jackson/Norfleet - depends on their level of improvement
OL - Better Lewan is back, supporting cast is better.
LB - Worse for now. Losing Ryan hurts but he will be back (hopefully). Will he be the same though? Ross will be even better and there is a solid rotation. Once the old Ryan returns, this turns to a "better".
DL - Probably a bit worse. Hard to replace Martin, Roh, and even Campbell. Some freaks out there but unproven. Upside is high.
Secondary - Better. Despite the loss of Kovacs, Countess is back and there are a slew of talented newcomers.
Special Teams - Pretty much the same. A full season of Norfleet at KR/PR will be interesting.
So, yeah, I'm excited for this year. Improved at most positions and most importantly stability at QB within the system could lead to a special year. 2014 could be even better.
...the secondary. That's always been a question other than pass rush and I can't help but think it will be vastly improved. We've he major questions in the secondary the past two seasons but still had decent Ds so I'm anxious to see what the overall D looks like.

There is also JuJu Smith and Adoree Jackson lurking around although definite longshots, especially Jackson.

Waiting is NOT beneficial when it comes to QBs, especially if you have a SOLID option like Malzone who, from what's being said, is a bird in hand....

The 2011 or 2012 Verlander? No question, it's JV. 2013 Verlander even if you give him some extra credit for long term resume, JV is #2.

Just a couple weeks ago, UMHoops had an article about Looney http://www.umhoops.com/2013/07/15/kevon-looney-i-could-be-next-at-michigan/ where he stated "he could be next" at Michigan referring to GRIII.

Looney maintains what he calls a “pretty good” relationship with Michigan’s coaching staff, saying John Beilein contacts him about twice a week.
One aspect of Looney’s recruitment that can’t be overlooked is the importance of retaining assistant coach LaVall Jordan, who was being strongly considered for the Butler head coaching job. Looney said Jordan is the coach he has the best relationship with and that he was glad to hear he was returning to the team.
“That’s big,” Looney said of Jordan returning. “He’s the assistant that’s been recruiting me, so I have probably the best relationship with him. That’s big.”

Again, just a couple weeks ago.....so, yeah, I'm a bit surprised. It went from "I could be next" at Michigan and a two horse race between UM and Duke to, not in the top 5.
For a long time, Parrker Westphal (100% 247 Crystal Ball) and Montae Nicholson (93% 247 Crystal Ball) have been considered Michigan leans.
There is also JuJu Smith and Adoree Jackson lurking around although definite longshots, especially Jackson.
IF, and a big IF, Lattimore and Smith are the rumored DBs that may or may not be committing this week.....would you rather have those two and close out our DB recruiting (and keep them out of OSU hands)?
Or would you rather have Westphal and Nicholson (and/or keep open the remote possibility of one of the West Coast blue chippers)?
Again, I'm assuming landing Lattimore and Smith would close out DB recruiting.
I'm torn. I like Westphal and Nicholson but stealing two Glenville kids, especially a 5 star one is enticing.
