Old fashioned? Just myth...

If you read into a many of the discussions and data regarding rape, you'll find that a significant majority of rape victims know their assailant prior to the crime. This is reported in some studies to be that 90% of rapists are known to the victim.

In real quantifiable data, a 2005 study by the US Department of Justice showed that in approximately 176 thousand cases of rape or sexual assault, 73% were committed by a known offender (28% by intimate partner and 38% by friend or aquaintance). (http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/cv05.pdf)

Old fashioned perceptions regarding rape and sexual assault need to be thrown out the window, and new perceptions of the reality must be forged. I apologize for calling out only this comment specificaly, because judging by many of the comments on this page, we still have a long way to move forward into the future before the general perceptions, old, current, new, whatever, are representative of reality.

CSTE Boston University

This research comes directly from authors at Boston University's Center for Study on Traumatic Encephalopathy (CSTE), where the disease of CTE was initially defined, via their research. The research from this institution puts forth is highly respected.

Interestingly, they have the largest brain bank for study on CTE. Any athlete that any of us has heard donated their brain after death to CTE research most likely went to this research facility. Furthermore, the CSTE has support from the NFL, as the NFL has donated $1M supporting future CTE research at Boston University's CSTE.

So basically... this article is not junk science.

Terrible article which misses the entire point.

This article lost me on this false statement:

"But, as it happens, small boys can't actually hit each other very hard, and the risk of serious head injury is not very considerable until the little whippersnappers pack on enough mass to really rattle one another."

This is a terribly incorrect statement. Kids have concussions just like everyone else, and their brains are at much more fragile stages of development than adults, just as their muscles to stabilize their head in protection against concussions are also much less developed.

My 10-year old nephew recently had 3 concussions within a year, two from football and one from soccer. The first went undiagnosed and made him much more susceptible to the following two concussions. With proper identification and rest, he could have easily recovered after the first one.

NFL and college players have the right and freedom to make the decisions to play this game.

I, however, want to stand up for  all the kids in grade school, junior high and high school who don't understand concussions. They may be at the whim of being educated about concussions by people who have a similar tone to the article linked in this post. When dealing with the millions of children that play contact sports (not just football) year round, we, as the mature adults, need to have a much wider perspective.

We can help educate children and teenagers about what concussions are so that they can make better decisions for their own health. Kids are completely capable to understand consequences if they are taught about them... We all knew when we were very young that having a neck injury is a terrible occurence which must be delicately handled. Only in the last decade have we started to realize we need to emphasize the same concern and education about head injuries.

Funny, but...

...perhaps you hit the nail on the head.

I would imagine that if I had done a lot of great things, like being:

  • an automotive engineer who was an "original partner in the creation of the General Motors Corporation"
  • elected twice as Mayor of Flint in the 1910s
  • a head of a foundation which donated $6.5 million to create a children's hospital at U of M in the 1960s
  • the namesake of a foundation which posthumously donated $25 million to create a massive expansion to this, one of the best children's hospitals in the nation...

I might not want my name confused with a fruit juice and apple sauce company.

C.S. Mott Children's Hospital

For general information for people who may not be familiar, the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital was named after Charles Stewart Mott.

Hospital administration tries to stress the point that the hospital be referred to in short hand as:

  • Mott
  • C.S. Mott
  • C.S. Mott Children's Hospital
  • Mott Children's Hospital

In sports terms, it would be seen as a faux paus to refer to Fords Field, Yosts Field House or Michigans Stadium.

Just an FYI!

Michigan Man

Please understand that there are many people out there, like myself, who value the concept of "The Michigan Man" and who would unabatedly agree with your sentiments towards these bullies and their parents.

Unfortunately, many people out there believe "Michigan Man" simply means that being somehow involved with the University of Michigan gives a person higher status, when in reality (at least, my reality) it is about holding yourself to a higher standard to be a better person in the classroom and in society and use that influence to spread good - and that is not a terrible concept, in my humble opinion.

Anyone with those traits, in my opinion, should be able to call themselves a Michigan Man upon the moment they set foot in Ann Arbor or don a Block M, regardless of whether they have any historical affiliation with the University.

We should not try to decry the "Michigan Man" concept, as it is a noble endeavor, and to lose it would be to lose a part of our standards which makes our University great. We should rather be trying to spread the noble aspects of the concept to teach those who do not fully understand what it means, like these bullies and their parents, and to discourage the ugly misrepresentations of it.

Hmmm...

You must have totally awesome friends.

Watch the last two minutes!

It has become clear that Dave Brandon should not read from a script. Today's opening comments were dull and somewhat uninspiring compared to his usual self.

Then, at the end when he took the podium back and spoke from the heart, he was direct, he was from the heart, and he was powerful. All of his responses seemed genuine and on point.

The last two minutes of the speech literally moved me... Please go back and watch the last 2 minutes.

Dave Brandon:

"This is about football players. This is about changing young men's lives. This is about bringing leadership in here who makes a difference in the lives of Young Men. And they leave here with a Championship ring. And they leave here with a great education. And they go out and do great things in life.

"That's Michigan.

"Michigan Men do that. They create other Michigan Men.

"And the guy that you just met is all about that. He's all about that. And he didn't spend as much time with a PR machine as others may. And he may not be dressed up and polished like the Toastmaster General like other people...

"And I don't care. I want a football coach. I want a football coach who's going to do with these Men what we want him to do - Teach them what to learn, and win.

"That's Michigan." /End Press Conference.

Maybe I'm crazy, but if that doesn't make you want to do this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwW_y2TuW58 to the Ohio border, then I think all good is lost in this world.

Interesting tidbit:

From the press release:

"Floor was manufactured in the upper peninsula of Michigan in the town of Amasa, Mich."

http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205025431&SPSID=4297&SPID=235&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=500#

Further article perusals reveal:

"The floor was built by Connor Sports Flooring, a Michigan company that does the playing floors for all NCAA playoff games and more than half of the new college stadiums in the country."

http://www.registerguard.com/csp/cms/sites/web/news/cityregion/25510276-41/court-floor-design-oregon-arena.csp

Pure Michigan.

Mike Bellotti

The article also suggests that Oregon's retired Mike Bellotti is somehow on the radar.

Dear Mgoblog,

And somewhere in a dusty attic of Schembechler exists a painting of Rich Rodriguez with him looking withered, wrinkled, and loathsome of visage...

Sincerely,

Oscar Wilde

A Theory: JKR and Quidditch... Is there a chance that JKR designed Quidditch to be a silly and ridiculous sport which everyone would be insanely crazy about to make a point about society's obsession with sport and the negative lengths to which we take that passion? I feel like JKR channeled her personal thoughts about sport through Hermione when Hermione would get flustered about the ridiculous amount of time spent on sport and the anger, frustration, and consternation that stirred friendships and created stark divides between competing teams/houses during Quidditch matches. JKR, perhaps, was suggesting we, as a society, spend too much time and negative energy on simple games which are supposed to be a wholesome distraction emphasizing sportsmanship, athleticism, and entertainment. ... Alright, now I'm off to go watch the UCLA-Oregon game just in case it effects Michigan's BCS chances and to simultaneously root for the result to somehow hurt OSU and MSU.
Advertising & Merchandising

Inge seems to always brings about a debate between fans on his value.... So many people love the guy and so many people hate the guy, and as a spokesman and advertiser for the team he obviously sparks a lot of attention and debate.

One item I never hear in these debates is his added value to the franchise - There must be an added value from him in merchandising, advertising, and ticket sales which we cannot quantify...

It'll be interesting to see what the new contract is.

This is exactly what I'm talking about!

Thank you for at least trying to set the guy straight, and thanks for the points about the Michigan-WVU ties!

Awesome!

I manage to find time to travel to West Virginia usually once a year to go white water rafting on the New and Gauley Rivers. The state is absolutely gorgeous and the opportunities for outdoor recreation are great!

Some facts and numbers...

True Story: The Michigan Athletic Department actually pays out-of-state tuition to the University for all football players, even if they are from the state of Michigan.

$149K*: 4-year tuition paid for football student athlete by U of M Athletic Department.
$187K* for players receiving a redshirt scholarship (5 years total under scholarship.)
$3.17* Million: total money paid yearly by the Athletic Department for football player scholarships.

(*Calculated from tuition cost only from the Office of Financial Aid, not including any possible stipends for room and board.)
http://www.finaid.umich.edu/financial_aid_basics/cost.asp

Athletic Department's 2008-09 Finances:

Revenue of $95.2M;
Expenses of $84.5M;
Net Gain of $10.7M
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/ncaa-finances.htm

A Michigan Daily article suggests the AD is projecting a surplus of $16.1M in 2009-10, and the expected surplus is only $4.7M in 2011.

John U Bacon

Bacon says that some of those games were called early, as the opposing captains waved their white flags, so 660 minutes may actually be a high number.

Crazy idea...

...Maybe the students could learn the words to the song "Temptation."

http://www.answers.com/topic/temptation-1933-song

The song is not that complex (and the part played after 3rd downs is only a few verses).

Finding the Michigan Score in Southern Stadiums:

Please let us know how that goes...

I was at the Penn State @ Alabama game a few weeks ago and they did not show the Michigan v Notre Dame score at all. Not once. They showed Eastern Michigan v Miami (OH) as well as San Diego State v New Mexico State. Quite a fascinating selection of scores.

Also, I attended the Florida @ Tennessee game in 2008 during Michigan's bye week, and they did not show a single score outside of the SEC.

Brian Cook reported from his trip to Auburn in 2008, "Though Auburn was plenty happy to inform us that Utah had beaten Air Force 30-23 and Missouri had defeated mighty Buffalo 42-21, there was not a single Big Ten score, and the only Pac 10 score was the Georgia-Arizona State game."

So let us know if this is just an SEC conspiracy to not let anyone know the Big Ten exists or if it's a full southern conspiracy in which the ACC takes part as well...

Missed Field Goals

Could those somehow be included? No punt or kickoff results, and a missed FG is not considered a turnover.

That would still be difficult to account for, as "missed FG" is probably not an easily sortable stat. You may have to go team by team and check their kicking statistics...

Interesting analysis!

I thought at first you meant this was gonna have a revival...

Pond Forever...

One of the narratives about the first game notes that the students in attendance began chanting "Pond Forever" after I.K. Pond scored the first touchdown.

I firmly believe we should chant "Pond Forever" on the first TD of every game. Tradition coming full circle!

In regards to sentiment that The Game has not been relevant...

In the last 10 years, the OSU-Michigan game had Big 10 implications for both teams 5 times*. Three other times it had implications for OSU. Two other times it had implications for Michigan. Summary, EVERY YEAR of the 2000's, this rivalry game has had Big 10 Title implications.

In the 1990s, the OSU-Michigan game had Big 10 implications for both teams only 3 times. Three other times it had implications only for OSU. Only 1 other time it had implications for Michigan.

In only 2001 did one of the teams not capture at least a share of the Big Ten title.

Let's be honest. The Game will never be The Ten Year War again with each team fighting for outright Big 10 titles, considering scholarship limits, the watering down of national television coverage (the current TV climate vs approx 2 games on per week in the 70's), and the addition of a national power (Penn State) to the conference.

Considering Ohio State and Michigan still have the opportunity to win the Big 10 or derail the other every season on the last day, The Game is that much more impressive as a rivalry compared to any other.

*2005 deserves an asterick here. For Michigan to capture a share of the Big10 in 2005, Michigan would have had to beat OSU and have MSU beat Penn State later in the day.

Went to Good Time Charley's trivia last night...

...and clearly missed the real party

Greg at MVictors...

...Adds some more information from Jon Falk's book, including information about Bob Bland's role painting the helmets, who is his assistant during football season and also the head basketball equipment manager.

Greg helps delineate some of the intricacies expressed in Jon's original CTK video and even shares some information directly from Russ Hawkins, the man from Schutt who places the paint mold boundary tape by hand. (As opposed to Riddell, where they use a standardized "Wing" tape).

http://mvictors.com/?p=7723

I am guessing that the helmets with "the wings taken off" are very likely simply blue helmets which were ordered separately, but I have not really seen a close picture of them to say for sure. Tape covering the maize would be very noticeable, as would paint, in a picture taken at a reasonably close distance.

One thing not mentioned in any of these videos is that scratches from facemasks and paint from other helmets find their way onto the helmets each week in games and, mostly, in practice. Steel wool is used to remove these marks from the helmet (and linemen see the worst gouges and scrapes) to make the them look as pristine as possible on Saturday afternoons (before the application of the Future floor cleaner to give them a waxy shine).

2 notes:

1) "Home to five medical schools..."

What? Only four medical schools reside in the state of Michigan - Michigan, Wayne State, MSU, and OaklandU: http://tiny.cc/MichiganMedicalSchools

2)  "Granted, this Great Lakes Community can't quite compare to the larger cities on our list in terms of job prospects or things to do."

Low cost of living seems to be the driving metric: "But it has a relatively low cost of living." I'm sure we can think of a myriad of places with a decently low cost of living compared to New York, DC and Chicago...

Hypothesis: Yahoo-Real Estate has someone who went to Michigan State on the team that put this gem together.

This article is quite entertaining more than anything.

1st time trying to embed pic, sorry... Not sure why that pic is not the right one. jmblue: My point was simply that the initial statement: "Kinnick Stadium is just as open as the Big House" is not accurate. The architecture and setup of Michigan Stadium does not equal Kinnick Stadium. I did not want to delve into the discussion about fan demographics and gameday experience. I'm sorry that it came across that way. FA: Thanks for the help. My first time trying to post a picture has not been a success. Maybe I'll put in the right URL this time?
Angle of Kinnick:

So you agree.

And that makes a difference on the sidelines.

If your approximation of 7 feet is correct, then 7 feet is approximately 2-3 additional rows of people closer to the team bench (and from field level, the Kinnick stands are much closer to level with the teams on the sideline, whereas Michigan Stadium's are raised above and further back... The setup at Iowa nearly puts the first few rows of fans in the bench)

2-3 rows of people, with 5 sections along the team bench at approximately 40 seats per section equates to an additional 400-600 more fans occupying space which would otherwise be filled with press, photographers, trunks for equipment and training staff purposes, etc etc.

Even if it's only 7 feet, and it is probably a few more, it makes a difference, on the bench, on the field.

The bigger difference between field noise levels at Michigan and Iowa, however, is the drastic difference in the steepness of the stands. The closeness of the stands is indeed a factor, though.

Kinnick

The angle at which the seats rise at Kinnick is noticeably steeper than in the Big House. Also the stands are closer to the field.

First thing your comment brings to mind about the RCBM thread...

What they've all just said is some of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.

At no point in their rambling, incoherent board responses were they even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.

Everyone on this board is now dumber for having read it.

Award them no points, and may God have mercy on their collective souls...

Spotting the ball

The other ridiculous thing to note about that play is how shockingly fast the referees moved to spot the ball.

My uncle, a college-level referee, first noted about that play that the referees are supposed to spot the ball with the same pace at any and every point of the game. If it takes you 7 seconds in the second quarter, it should take roughly the same time with a minute to go. My uncle is also an Ohio State grad and, if anything, had a bias against Michigan in that game, yet was disturbed by the speed of that ref in the open field.

One FAKE out of five on the referee's 4.38 40-time there...

Agreed...

It is Gaiman's most complete story.

He does a wonderful and crazy job of creating these fantastic worlds and ideas, yet in some of his books you finish with an empty feeling, expecting another 200 pages.

American Gods delivers, and the book's concept could be the topic of a myriad of theses varying in topics between religion, world mythology, American history, and philosophy or a combination...

“God’s die. And when they truly die they are unmourned and unremembered. Ideas are more difficult to kill than people, but they can be killed, in the end.” ~American Gods

Fantastic List!! We would get along...

Count of Monte Cristo is a must! I highly recommend reading the full unabridged version.

A few added recommendations:

  • American Gods, Neil Gaiman
  • Kidnapped, Robert Louis Stevenson
  • Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain
Agreed...

...I cannot wait for Fresno State to get their comeuppance.

Magnus

Your comments are great. Thanks for all you do...

I don't post much, but I once made the point on some thread (about the idea of the "Michigan Man") that Lloyd Carr was also hired by Michigan from West Virginia, as he coached there for all of 2 or 3 months of an offseason under Don Nehlen.

You replied "This is not true."

It is, actually, true.

I know that you like having facts straight, and it is indeed a neat little bit of history.

Only actual link I can find about it is wikipedia, fwiw, but Coach Carr spoke about his brief time at WVU to John U Bacon's class several years ago. My favorite part of that speech was when he told us about teaching in his earlier years while driving a Budweiser truck in his part time for extra cash...

Also, I'm a big fan of singing the verses to the Victors... they are too much fun. "We cheer for Michigan..."

Real explanation, not clever, for 18-29 year old opinion:

Statistically Insignificant. End of story.

I was curious on the error information when I first saw the survey, so I had looked at the data.

The poll surveyed only 890 Michigan voters. Of that percentage, only 8% were in the range of 18-29 years old, equating to 71 total respondents.

Of the 71 people in the age group of question, only 28% were Michigan fans, which is a whopping 20 people.

The poll only asked Michigan fans about the "favorability" or "should he stay or should he go" about Rodriguez, so the splits, out of 20 people aged 18-29, go like this:

5/8/7 - Favorable/Unfavorable/Not sure

7/8/5 - Continue/Replaced/Not sure

Statistically irrelevant information.

Very interesting article on SI... ...about the revenues of baseball teams and how the Yankees fit into the situation. Joe Posnanski takes a deeper look into the Forbes "Business of Baseball" numbers. Great - and accurate - point: "...your ticket price didn't go up because Roy Halladay got a $60 million extension, but instead Roy Halladay got a $60 million extension because of the price of your Philadelphia ticket." http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/joe_posnanski/04/19/baseb… Interesting note, the Tigers lost almost $30 million in 2009. Yikes.
Why don't we.. Why don't we just continue to put up the "Z" in remembrance of the first great space emperor? Every punter from hereforth will always be an honarary Zoltan. The Punter is now the papacy of Michigan Football. Will Hagerup is now Zoltan Mesko the 2nd. It will be The Zoltan's legacy at the University of Michigan. 100 years from now, when students still raise up the "Z" when our punter space boosts onto the field, the young kids will turn to their parents with bewildered looks of curiosity. Each parent will turn to their kid and say, "Let me tell you a bedtime story about the first great space emperor..."
To those piling on Section 1... Please do not ask Section 1 to give up all his tickets or suggest he is not a real Michigan fan. Michigan is MICHIGAN thanks to the tradition of winning and the continuous support of the fan base over a length of time which trumps arguably any other school in the nation. Those often stereotyped of being too old or too lifeless are valued assets which make the Michigan game day experience truly unique. At the end of the day, every Michigan Stadium experience is amazing, because we are all watching Michigan football, and it does not seem like Section 1 ever chooses to make the amount of light outside help or hurt his experience. My excitement for the night game is high because it will test the envelope to reach the youth of today and to better advertise the University of Michigan, whether it improves the game day experience or not. Section 1, I hope that the night game will prove to be an exciting experience for you, and I hope that your golf round goes well!
Ferris/NMU Fox Sports is broadcasting the other semifinal, as it shows on the bracket from ccha.com: http://www.ccha.com/assets/1/News/2010%20CCHA%20Championship%20Bracket%… The FSN Detroit TV Listings also confirm they'll be showing the Ferris/NMU game at 4:30.

That is absolutely true. Not sure if you are being sarcastic... He spoke about his few short months at West Virginia a few years ago to John U Bacon's class (as well as his stint driving a Budweiser truck while coaching/teaching at Eastern Michigan.) For lack of a better link, this one still says what you need under "Coaching Career": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd_Carr
