FWIW. Michigan doesn't seem inclined to get re-involved.

The only thing missing from that video was for Stephen to toss in a "beat Ohio".
While it's sad that he had to give up playing football, I hope that he gets to have a long and happy life to pursue new dreams....and catch many Michigan football victories in the future.

I believe that filling the stadium will be resolved for the 2014 home schedule. It will just be resolved by random fans picking up surplus tickets off of Stubhub for $6 a pop, which is not the business model we want to ensure the long-term financial health of the Michigan Athletic Department.
Michigan will probably not have much trouble packing 100K+ fans in week-to-week, but they won't be paying top dollar. The problem is that 1/3 fewer students opted to purchase season tickets this year. The problem is that the wait list for purchasing football season tickets has gone from a 5 or 6 year wait to a no year wait surplus in just the past few seasons. We're seeing signs that the demographic of the football attendee starting to shift away from the life-long season ticket-holder to the game-to-game purchaser, which should alarm Brandon, and yet all signs seem to suggest that it doesn't.
|1 week 1 day ago||Your point is well taken, but||
Your point is well taken, but the Michigan Athletic Department has a PR problem right now with the fanbase in general and this latest promotion just underlines the impression for most that Brandon refuses to acknowledge it. Brandon shouldn't be trying to incentivize those fans still paying to be season ticket holders in a desperate attempt to hold onto them, he should be trying to entice disenfranchised / new fans to come into the fold. That's his job too, probably his most important job given that season ticket demand has gone from being a years long wait list to a surplus in just a few seasons.
I'm not saying a open-to-the-public Movie Night at Michigan Stadium would solve the problem; obviously it wouldn't, but it's symptomatic of the mindset within the Athletic Department that you only matter if you're supporting Michigan financially, otherwise you're expendable.

Well, to be fair, 10 years ago we didn't have Hi Def Godzillatrons installed in the stadium, so Movie Night probably couldn't have been a thing.
If Brandon is trying to redefine Michigan Stadium from being, "the place we watch football" to "the entertainment center of the University of Michigan", I don't think that's a huge deal. Whether there are movies being shown outside in Ann Arbor at Top of the Park or at Michigan Stadium, it's the summer and it's the offseason.
I'm as uncomfortable as the next fan at some of the moves Brandon has made and worry that it's diluting the Michigan football experience. I just don't think that this is one of them.

I was just sitting around thinking that what the board could use today is another thread of fans bitching about Dave Brandon planning to have fireworks at Michigan Stadium this fall. Imagine my delight when I clicked onto the site to find just that very thing. Hooray.

Is it cynical to believe that the Free Press is trying to capitalize on a proven formula that negative press against the state's most prestigious University garners clicks and sells newspapers? Sure, but that doesn't mean that it is necessarily untrue.
The only thing that I'll regret when that rag of a periodical dies is that there won't be a physical grave that I can visit to piss upon.
|1 week 4 days ago||Well....||
I've been to Columbus twice and I've had stuff thrown at me...twice. I agree that not every OSU fan is a bad person, but there is definitely a mentality down there that grants some level of acceptance for treating Michigan fans badly. I've visited every B1G football venue (at least before the Nebraska, Rutgers, Maryland expansion) and the treatment I've received at Ohio Stadium is orders of magnitude worse than anyplace else I've been....it's not even close.
That said, every fanbase has their share of assholes, no doubt, but generalizations exist because they have some basis in reality.

Michigan's Coaching Staff vs. MSU
Recruiting - Michigan - This isn't even a contest. Michigan consistently pulls in better talent than Michigan State year-in and year-out. Despite all the snide remarks about MSU "recruiting nationally" and dominating the state, the truth is that, with few exceptions, Michigan gets the kids it wants from the state and around the country and MSU makes due with what it left.
Player Development - MSU - Hard to argue that State doesn't squeeze every last ounce of football out of every player they recruit. In the long run Hoke may flip the script on this, but right now, it's not a contest.
Scheme - Push - Sparty's version of Tresselball versus whatever the hell we're going to do under Nussmeier. I don't think either staff has demonstrated an advantage in this area despite MSU's head-to-head success against Michigan.
Game Management - Push - Hoke is cool with gambling on 4th down and Dantonio has "Little Giants". We called the wrong 2 point conversion play against OSU last year and Dantonio replaced Cook with Maxwell in the ND game. I think both staffs are pretty equivalent.
Public Relations - Michigan - This isn't even close either. Hoke's vanilla approach to the media is such that an offiside comment about Gardner not being the for certain starting QB during spring practice erupts into an internet firestorm. Dantonio meanwhile is prickly in a way that makes Lloyd Carr cringe, treating Michigan assistant coaches rudely, snide remarks about "where's the threat?", and generally coming off as an immature dick. His handling of Glenn Winston, Nerdgate, and so on eclipses anything that Michigan's dealt with during Hokes tenure. The only thing keeping Dantonio in good standing from a PR perspective is his team's performance on the field, which if that takes a turn for the worse....suddenly all the other things will probably become a much bigger deal.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||The outcome of this game||
The outcome of this game seems to affect ND more than it does us. If Michigan loses, they still have the conference title to play for. If the Irish lose, they are behind the eight ball early in the year since their goal is to win the MNC.
I'd be curious to see how this analysis shakes out on the Irish side of the equation....and oh yeah, fuck Notre Dame.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||Slight Edge to OSU?||
Caveat: This conversation is probably premature since Hoke's staff has undergone such a significant reshuffle that we haven't been able to properly assess yet, but here goes....
Recruiting Talent - OSU - You can argue that recruiting at OSU is not nearly as challenging as it is at Michigan since you're the sole big player in a talent rich state, but you still have to keep your big targets at home and OSU for the most part hasn't lost many head-to-heads with Michigan in this department.
Player Development - Push - Both Hoke and Meyer haven't been around long enough to really assess this metric accurately. OSU has sent the most players to the NFL the past two years, but Michigan has been running a close 2nd in that time. Both programs have done a good job of keeping their recuits in the program thusfar as well. Development of talent along the DL and OL remains a concern for Michigan, but I'm still not ready to hand the award to Urban's crew quite yet.
Scheme - OSU - Slight edge to OSU in this regard. Meyer's teams score points and Michigan has just been inconsistent in this regard. Again, Nussmeier might come in this season and flip the script on this equation, but OSU has gone 24-2 under Meyer that past two seasons. Hard to argue against that kind of performance.
Game Management - Michigan - This is hard to compare since OSU hasn't been in nearly as many tight squeezes under Meyer as Michigan has during Hoke's tenure, but Brady seems comfortable with taking risks on 4th down without being reckless, and the decisions for the most part seem like the right ones. Even last year's two point conversoin call at the end of the OSU game seems like the right call even though the playcall was suspect and the execution was...well let's not pick at that scab.
Public Relations - Push - Both programs approach to the media is to keep information to a slow trickle and engage in mundane coachspeak. Both Hoke and Meyer seem to handle bad publicity pretty well with the occasional black mark. Again, I think OSU coaches have an easier time with this in Ohio since the media there are not really in the business of trying to dig up dirt on such a beloved institution compared to Michigan where you have...yeah, f#*k the Free Press.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||I don't think anybody would||
I don't think anybody would deny that the team has talent as well as depth of talent at many positions. The jury is still out on whether Hoke and his staff can develop that talent and get the best out of it. At this point, that's really what we're all waiting to see.
|3 weeks 1 day ago||Plus||
It's not just sales of jerseys with the Number 16 spiking, it's how retailers stock large quantities of jerseys in only certain numbers that just happen to correllate with the some high profile players currently on the roster are wearing. I was in Ann Arbor last weekend and wandered into the M Den and the only football jersey you could buy off the rack was Number 98. Now talking heads like Delaney and Brandon will probably claim coincidence or honoring the memory of Tom Harmon so some other lie like that, but it's obviously bullshit.

|3 weeks 2 days ago||Let's Not Forget....||
Yeah, and if the mad scramble to win at Northwestern and the stampede blitz to stop Akron cold on their final play don't get executed the call for Hoke's head is even more strident. Truth is that while Michigan was a few plays away from being better than 7-6, they were also just a couple away from being worse too.
I think Michigan is set up to surprise folks this season too and calls for this to be a make or break year are premature, but you know sports columnists are going to sports column...
