Hope he goes to class at his next school

I'm hoping for a Friday…

I'm hoping for a Friday afternoon news dump but at this point who would be surprised if he gets let go in April while they "review the investigation" that The Athletic published about today.

Leaving to try the NBA /=…

Leaving to try the NBA /= tanking an entire program.  Beilein leaving to pursue the NBA is exactly the same as Harbaugh pursuing the NFL and nobody will ever attribute an asterisk to Harbaugh.

I canceled my 24/7 sub when Sam deflected the blame off of Howard after the Sanderson run-in.

Juwan's 2024 is closer to…

Juwan's 2024 is closer to Brady Hoke's 2014 than Jim Harbaugh's 2020.

I think the most tiring part…

I think the most tiring part of the discourse is the idea that the major things currently wrong with the program aren't Juwan's fault

Can't get top level transfer talent?  Darn you M admissions!

Players are undisciplined and listless?  Juwan can't force his guys to care!

Starting point guard doesn't go to class? What's he supposed to do, hold his hand on the way to class?

Maybe if you could make a case for any one of these things not being his fault, but taken together they present a coach who is way out of his depth and has no business managing a basketball program.  I have no faith that he can course-correct and make M a tournament team again.

They're 8-16 and going to…

They're 8-16 and going to miss the tournament for the 2nd straight year.  Their starting PG is academically ineligible (?) to play in road games.  The head coach has recurring anger issues.  What intellectual conversations do you hope to be having here?

I agree with this take and…

I agree with this take and think a breath of fresh air is what Juwan needs. The frustrating part is that the time for the hard reset was this last offseason.  Hard not to question his judgment moving forward if he was willing to run it back after the worst M basketball season in 8 (13?) years.

The whole idea to hiring…

The whole idea to hiring Howard and maintaining the viability of the program was that his ability to bring in elite recruits would outweigh any coaching advantages lost by Beilein's departure.  Instead, we get the worst of both since he hasn't turned M into a real landing spot for top recruits and what's happening on the court speaks for itself.

This is contrarianism…

This is contrarianism parading as intellect.  The only affirmative given for keeping Howard is that his transfers did not pan out, which is a theme of the last 2 offseasons.

If you believe rebuilds can…

If you believe rebuilds can happen quickly in CBB (I do), what is the advantage to tying a rebuild to Juwan compared to any other coach?  He has few redeeming qualities as a coach and even fewer redeeming qualities as the face of the basketball program.

There is not one single…

There is not one single upside to keeping Juwan that isn't "well...it worked for Harbaugh."  Albeit in a different sports landscape, Harbaugh took over a middling program and consistently coached top 10-15 teams and failed to break through to the top tier prior to 2021.  Juwan inherited a top 10-20 program and subsequently ran it off the road.

The basketball is terrible.  His staff had no business running it back after last year. The roster construction is abysmal. He can't get his starting PG to go to class.  He can't control his temper. His own team's strength coach refuses to work with him. He doesn't recruit at a high level.  He doesn't understand how to navigate the transfer portal.

How many demerits can a coach get before enough is enough?  The fact that there is even a possibility he returns next year is beyond me.  If he couldn't see this season coming last year, why should we trust that he has the foresight to navigate more changes ahead?  Tremendously disappointing and an insult to the program that John Beilein built from scratch.

You view this as Juwan…

You view this as Juwan stepping in and getting Dug the help he needs.  I am wondering why the program has failed Dug so hard that he is even in danger of becoming ineligible.  It is certain people's literal job to keep athletes eligible for play.  Is Dug culpable for this too?  Absolutely, but it's impossible to separate his own failure with the program's failure to prevent anything like this from ever happening.

I’m really baffled at the… I’m really baffled at the idea that this doesn’t reflect on the way Juwan runs the program. This is not a normal occurrence. The university spends millions of dollars getting athletes up to speed and maintaining their academic progress. They have unlimited time and resources to work with each kid. No one in the program was checking up on Dug before it got to this point?
Hard to understate what an…

Hard to understate what an absolute failure Juwan has been.  Losing games? It happens.  Bad roster management? Sure.  Your best player gets suspended for academic issues?  When there is an army of university support staff that is hired to keep kids eligible?  A total failure as a head coach on and off the court.

Very funny timing.  He's a…

Very funny timing.  He's got a bit of a Harbaugh shine to their fanbase.  If it were one year later, he might be their coach.

Was refreshing ESPN a ton during the 2007 coaching search.  They had a sidebar of links to Michigan sites and this was one of them.

It's still his program and it's not like these are unfounded issues over his tenure.

What is Juwan’s plan for…

What is Juwan’s plan for fixing the team?  For all the Beilein comparisons the one that sticks out most is that Beilein was able to identify problems and adapt.  If Juwan is here for three more years, is it 3 more years of Saddi and Phil?  Of a roster full of out of position fours?

Very impressive hire

As a responsible consumer of…

As a responsible consumer of sports media, this is all hearsay and circumstantial evidence and should probably be tossed aside.  One can reasonably infer that the Stal Bombs Twitter account pushing a lot of these similar narratives is 247 user/faux insider JustWin who has been mostly wrong these last few weeks "reporting" from his sources what was going on with the CS scandal and subsequent fallout. This is all hot air until someone reputable puts their name on their reporting and can provide real evidence.

As a stupid, unreasonable Michigan fan, RYAN DAY WE'RE CALLING YOU OUT BROTHER.  YOU'RE GETTING PERP WALKED OUT OF MICHIGAN STADIUM ON SATURDAY.

#3 goes a long way.  Even just acknowledging the person you're sitting by and saying "We're harmless.  Don't worry about us" breaks the tension and snaps people out of the caricatures they have built up in their head about opposing fans.

Have been to EL before for…

Have been to EL before for the game (and gone to many other M/Lions away games).   In general, people aren't going to go out of the way to antagonize you more than the usual ribbing/trash talk.  Just be respectful and friendly and keep to yourselves.  Don't go over the top celebrating your team in the stands or be turning around to single people out/invite attention.  The most ribbing you'll get is before/after the game but that's just part of it.  Bring your wife if she can handle getting a few "fuck you"s on the way to your seats.  Have fun!

You can park at the basketball arena for $35 cash only.  Very short walk to the stadium and grilling and drinking is allowed.  Parking is first-come first-served and will open up at 8:30 AM.  Enjoy the game!

I've been to Maryland.  It was a fun experience but not a very notable place to go unless you want to tie in a DC trip.  It's a nice enough campus but not a memorable gameday experience.

I went to Minneapolis a while back, but for a Lions game.  Amazing city and lots to see and do. Great neighborhoods and very walkable. The people are unbelievably friendly.  Was stopped many times pregame to shake hands and be told "thanks so much for coming."  It's a cheap flight from DTW if that's your home base.  Would love to get back there for a M game.

Have heard great things about Nebraska but haven't been.

This is a win for fans. …

This is a win for fans.  Stubhub has gone way downhill in the past few years in terms of fees and ease of use.  It used to be that you could pick a game, pick seats, confirm the price w/ fees and then buy.  In the past few years, their app has implemented a series of 4-5 click-through screens you have to get through before you even know what the final price is.  It makes browsing ticket prices super inconvenient.  Seatgeek is much more user-friendly.

For beer, take the Canal…

For beer, take the Canal streetcar to Bayou Beer Garden., but stop at Neyow's first for traditional New Orleans food (get the chargrilled oysters too).  After the garden, when your appetite is worked up again, walk to Parkway and get the James Brown poboy (imo the best in the city).  You can get a streetcar pass on the Le Pass app for cheap if you haven't already.

If you are feeling spry, you can ride back to downtown from there on the Lafitte Greenway via Blue Bike.

Enjoy your trip!

There's plenty to gripe…

There's plenty to gripe about with Juwan but it really does seem like he's getting consistently handcuffed by the UM administration.  Back to back offseasons of losing high-end talent to admissions, a woefully underequipped NIL infrastructure.  Warde is an AD with zero redeeming qualities (except for playing for Bo) and has time and again hampered the department with bad PR and poor leadership.  It's time to restructure and get serious or roll over and become Northwestern basketball.

Of course it's natural for a…

Of course it's natural for a son to defend their dad.   He can be understandably defensive about Bo and the University can say they take what happened seriously, but both can't exist together when the U hires him.

You can either be unfairly…

You can either be unfairly tied to the actions of your father or you can put yourself in front of a camera and call a victim a liar.  Like it or not, hiring him is an endorsement of his words and actions by the university/athletic department.  Really poor judgment in this decision.

It's awkward at best to…

It's awkward at best to bring back the son of the guy at the head of a major sexual assault case against the university.  It's unconscionable when the guy they are hiring called one of the victims a liar.

This sucks!

This sucks!

Miami spent the whole season…

Miami spent the whole season somewhere in the 30s on Kenpom.  It's not some billionaire-assembled super-team dominating the sport by force.  Absent tournament results, they spent most of the season with a profile similar to an Illinois or Memphis.  If anything, what we "hath wrought" is a far more interesting and exciting tournament created in part by more parity across teams and less dominant blue bloods.

Says a lot about something…

Says a lot about something that Penn St, flush with B1G cash, has to watch their coach make a lateral move (at best) like this after a successful season.

Lions to Browns is the worst fandom swap I could possibly imagine

It's hard to fault any…

It's hard to fault any player for leaving.  Playing professionally is a dream for these guys and college is only a pitstop along that path.  Youth is a huge premium in the NBA's eyes and the players aren't naive to this when making their decision.

The comment you cited is a reply to your own initial post. It sounds like you're annoyed people would bring up his issues off the field.  Call it 'apathy signaling."

Are we supposed to pretend to have goldfish memories about what he did because he won two super bowls?  Is that what "holier than thou" means?

It's just such a corny thing…

It's just such a corny thing to see Michigan fans huff about academics like theirs is the only school in the world (and also conveniently ignoring how football players at all schools get funneled into manageable degrees anyway.)  Academics means more than US News rankings.  Maybe he liked the academic advising team, met some faculty, something.  It doesn't mean SC is a bunch of cavemen compared to the intellectuals at Michigan.

This is a make or break off…

This is a make or break off-season for Juwan.  Time to clean house with this staff and get this team right.

-Recruit considers Michigan

-Recruit considers Michigan

-Recruit signs somewhere else

Some dork: "OmG they obviously didn't look at the latest US News College Rankings and don't they know we are a public Ivy I guess *Opposing coach X* is CHEATING"

Not going to write off the…

Not going to write off the team just yet.  We've all watched this team struggle in early season games for the better part of 10 years now.  Breaking in 3.5 starters is bound to produce some growing pains and clunkers like tonight.

I think your last sentence…

I think your last sentence is key, but to the opposite point.  The conference is about to be (even more) flush with cash.  As an AD, would you want to potentially waste a year on a "prove it" season with a coach who has never demonstrated a willingness to turn over his staff?  Eat the transition cost now and hit the ground running with a clear vision as the conference transitions into its next iteration.  In the long run, there's going to be a lot of jockeying for position among the low/mid tier conference teams to cement their spot in the upcoming super leagues that CFB is headed toward.
