Some German terms that could…

Some German terms that could be applied to many Michigan situations...

Fremdscham, "vicarious shame", the shame felt for the behavior of someone else. To be a Michigan fan during the Rodriguez-Hoke-Harbaugh era is to frequently endure fremdscham about their on-field performance

Verschlimmbessern, “to make something worse by trying to improve it.” Frequently Harbaugh has tried to overturn his coaching staff due to failures in big games, true verschlimmbessern!

Weltschmerz, “mental depression or apathy caused by comparison of the actual state of the world with an ideal state.” The year 1997 was a banner one for Michigan fans, but has led to much weltschmerz as we have endured the subsequent years of mostly mediocre football.

Torschlusspanik, “as one gets older, the fear that time is running out and important opportunities are slipping away.” When I was young, I believed that Michigan was due for so many important victories and certain championships, but now I feel deep torschlusspanik knowing that we may never win a Big Ten title again.

Here are some English words…

Here are some English words that speak to Cade's comments. I am not smart enough to assign any one of these three specifically. Found on the https://wordsmith.org message boards. Sign up for a word a day emails, my dudes.

cataphasis: a kind of paralipsis in which one explicitly affirms the negative qualities that one then passes over.

apophasis: allusion to something by denying that it will be mentioned, as in I will not bring up my opponent's questionable financial dealings.

paraleipsis: pretended or apparent omission by which a speaker artfully pretends to pass by what he really mentions; as, for example, if an orator should say, I do not speak of my adversary's scandalous venality and rapacity, his brutal conduct...

It seems like they picked …

It seems like they picked "Guardians" because there is a phonetic similarity to "Indians" with the same ending to each word. It would be like the Detroit Lions changing their nickname to the "Scions". What I don't understand is the logo which makes me feel like they are trying to allude to "Guardian Angels" with the wings. We already have the Angels in baseball. Your identity should be unique across leagues, let alone within your own league.

Seems like the last thing we…

Seems like the last thing we need is an invited panel of all white people - people who did not experience racism on campus - talking about what we ought to do about the legacy of racists at Michigan. I certainly don't think anyone wants to hear another talking down to from Seth, the amateur moralizer of MGoBlog. Maybe the roundtable needs to take a few months off until we can get back to Brian not caring about football again.

This is an interesting point…

This is an interesting point. I also feel as if I could do without live sports most of the time but didn't attribute it to all my teams being terrible. I just figured that I was losing interest. I wonder if the sports providers consider the effect that this "cable or bust" gambit for live sports might have on the overall interest in the product. I used to love hockey, but moving to a non-hockey state and not having cable has basically reduced my knowledge about the sport and interest in watching it to zero.

Just for accuracy,…

Just for accuracy, developing antibodies from previous exposure to a disease does not guarantee that you are immune from infection. Every disease has different parameters regarding antibodies and this one has a lot of unknowns still. You could have some immunity, but it could end after a certain period of time. You could have no immunity.

From the CDC:

We do not know yet if having antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19 can protect someone from getting infected again or, if they do, how long this protection might last.

He'll be fine building his…

He'll be fine building his brand without Michigan. The NBA caters to fans of players, not fans of teams (pro or college). No one cares where Dwayne Wade went to college. They just like to watch his highlights. If Josh Christopher is as good as people think he will be, then he'll sleep through one year of college hoops and have success in the pros where the fanbase follows players first.

It actually might make sense…

It actually might make sense for him to play at ASU given the strengths of his game. If he is a player who is great on the dribble-drive to the hoop and average to below average at shooting, playing in a league where you can actually get a foul call when you go to the basket is probably preferable. Not that he necessarily considered that, but it might play out better for him given the referee performances in the B1G.

Y'all need to chill out. You…

Y'all need to chill out. You act like you aren't going to do whatever you want anyways.

Odd to see someone trying to use data to support their argument. /s

Instead of listening to all the dummies on this board spread baseless and uneducated opinions, why don't you listen to the people from the university you purport to love.

There is a lot of anger going on during this podcast. Someone needs to cheer up and not be so dismissive when other people deign to ask questions or bring up things the host doesn't like.

It doesn't help that the blog is filled with soccer and politics and other nonsense that doesn't make it a compelling read. There is no news that you can't get elsewhere and without the holier than thou attitudes.

Listener warning

There is a lot of Ira in this one. I know how much you care about Maryland sports.

Thanks

Thanks for the follow up!

Wither Mbem-Bosse?

Did I miss that Elysee Mbem-Bosse left? A cursory site search produced no evidence of this. Not that he's necessarily critical to our success, just like to know when dudes leave and why.

The bad refs comments are like the Enos comments... We need to play defense. 62% from the floor for the game is ridiculous. Purdue played well, but if we want to beat a good tream we need to contest more shots.
Replacing / competing with Metellus?

I think that he could replace Josh Metellus. That guy made a ton of mistakes last year and he was hard to watch by the bowl game. But who really knows? Maybe he's Wayne Lyons.

Fun

To continue the "fun" parallel between Michigan offensive line hysteria and US soccer hysteria, the hard part to grapple with is whether the U.S. has bad players, or whether we just don't get to see the ones who are good because they are too young.

In earlier USMNT games, we saw some signs from Kellyn Acosta, Matt Miazga, Kelyn Rowe, Lynden Gooch... These players exist! Are they good? Maybe! We'll never know if they don't play on the big stage.

It may result in failure, but I'd rather watch some potential than see the same lack of potential that I've watched for 10 years now in Jozy Altidore, Ale Bedoya, Michael Bradley, etc.

Just one super-conference

A buddy and I were talking about the next TV contracts the other night. I think the SEC should just go for it and try to bring in four teams, while jettisoning their weakest links. Grab Florida State, Miami, Texas, and Ohio State. Get rid of Vandy and Missouri. No one would watch any other league and they could own the sport forever.

Whatever really happens, I hope it's as brazen as this, because I'm tired of the narrative that college athletics is pure and the playing field is even.

I give it 1/50th of a sad golf cart pizza

The best was Urban.... *human emotion does not compute... what is this "hug"?*

WL

I live in WL, unfortunately. The things to know:

1) That weekend is homecoming for Purdue. The kids here do a thing called "Breakfast Club" where they get up crazy early on gameday, dress in themed costumes (groups of kids pick a theme), and then hang at the bars which are all open at 6 am. If you get to town in the morning, you may have to dodge drunken costumed students as they stop mid-street to puke. Homecoming will make this worse. Lots of alums in town to re-live their Breakfast Clubbing past.

2) The main drag at Purdue is under a two-year construction project. State Street is closed, and you will have to plan a creative way to get around town. Not sure how much this impacts the WL bar scene (Harry's as mentioned is the best, but there are some okay college spots now that will be fun enough on gameday... 308, Neon Cactus). This definitely impacts the usual tailgating spots on the westside of town, which are harder to get to. Also note: tailgating spots are far from bars (at least a half mile and probably farther).

3) The only decent part of a Purdue trip is actually probably spending some time in Lafayette proper. Main St has some good bars and the college kids don't come across the river much so you can actually enjoy a sit-down meal and some good microbrews. Hipster spot is called Black Sparrow... no TVs, but good food and music. Most of the sports bars (DT Kirby's has the best albeit greasiest food) are Cubs themed. Be prepared for everyone to be more into the Cubs than Purdue. That being said, downtown Lafayette is a decent experience and in my opinion is far superior to WL. A last recommendation for beer is to swing north down 9th street (it will seem like you are leaving town and getting towards farm country) and stop by People's Brewing Co. Great beer and a fun atmosphere, although the place is small.

The stadium experience is pretty terrible, and you will likely regret dropping >$60 per ticket. In the good ol' days (was it 2012?) I could get 10 Michigan-Purdue football tickets for the same cost as one Michigan-anybody home ticket. Homecoming will mess that up.

Good luck to all coming for the visit! Go Blue!

She eked it out!
Robocop

I like the "Robocop" nickname. I hope Mr Wroblewski has a career good enough to warrant a highlight video set to the theme music of the film and leading with this...

For the millenials, that is not "the X-Men's Cyclops with a stupid helmet and a gun".

It is Mick Kyoooon

http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/sean_mckeon_1001244.html

You can listen to Brandy say everyone's name. They only have the '16 roster up though.

One stadium halo to rule them all

I immediately got a "Gandalf and Frodo" vibe from this picture.

I agree...

... but hopefully we'll just get more front page hockey.

WBB?

How weird is it that we get a front page post about a terrible hockey team, but not even a whiff of a follow for women's basketball which just won a tournament title (WNIT, I know, but that wasn't exactly the WBB team's fault).

SMH

If you don't root for something that would benefit Michigan in the long run, you are dumb. I don't understand people who obsess about another school losing every game. That sounds like a Sparty mindset to me.

Woof

This is not particularly good commentary. Mentioning Jordan Morris as a positive when he didn't make the Gold Cup team? Those who want to talk USA soccer should probably just read "Yanks Abroad" (http://www.yanks-abroad.com/). Also, this is a University of Michigan sports blog. Even the lamentable Jim Harbaugh gif tourney and Draftageddon posts were more relevant than this.

Agreed, but instead we'll

Agreed, but instead we'll probably just get some post about gifs. Or another draftpocalypse.

I find myself wanting to post

I find myself wanting to post more just to provide visual evidence that these front-running trolls are a minority. The last near-decade of Beilein has been so much more rewarding than the prior decade of Amaker-Ellerbe-Fab5Fallout. We get to one championship game and everyone thinks this is the new normal.

I hope you're right about his

I hope you're right about his size. A reasonable big might save us from another year of wayward Beilein hot seat chatter.

Maybe

Maybe

Someday, you'll understand

Someday, you'll understand how to spell "arguement".

recruiting is not Beilein's fault

Michigan can't recruit in basketball like the other schools do. We got burned cheating once and can't risk a death sentence. I feel like those of us that lived through the Fab Five understand this better than those that didn't.

Be happy that our coach is clean, a good human being, and can coach up mediocre talent in most, but not all, basketball seasons.

I find them helpful when

I find them helpful when you're doing something kind of mundane but necessary like cooking dinner, driving long distances, or working out. You're not alone. I started in on them because I lived far away from Michigan and needed some sports content that fit my interests.

Shutdown Fullcast

The best sports one I haven't seen listed yet is the "Shutdown Fullcast", which covers college football in a completely absurdist style. It has lots of in-jokes, but they make fun of everyone and are usually good for several out-loud laughs from me per episode.

I usually grimace while

I usually grimace while reading (or hearing) Brian defend every Michigan action against reproach. We're not perfect, and it bothers me when people act like Michigan isn't capable of the same wrong-headedness or mistakes as other programs. MGoBlog can be like the Fox News of college football fandom. That being said, this was an immensely satisfying read. Sadly, it only serves to make us as a fanbase feel more justified. The larger public will ignore this rebuttal in favor of more haranguing.

woof

When Sam Webb is not there, the Roundtable is a huge train wreck. Ira is consistently awful and has bad opinions and bad taste, Ed Feng adds zero value whilst claiming that "his" numbers tell him things that are just wrong, and poor Craig is reduced to an odd quip when his insights are the only thing holding the conversation together. The Michigan fanbase deserves way better.

While I would agree that it

While I would agree that it is well-written and occasionally amusing, I'd take a pass on "Infinite Jest". It has no payoff, and has benefitted from years and years of mythologizing from critics that don't seem to have finished the book themselves. Unless you're the kind of person that gets off on reading long books and putting them on the shelf so that people know how smart you are...

Now if you want to waste weeks of your life on a good book, just read "Gravity's Rainbow" by Thomas Pynchon, which is hundreds of times more clever than anything by Wallace, and has an ending!

Also, if you need some weird "Infinite Jest" reference explained in the two sentence version, I'm sure some of the dudes on this thread would oblige.

I love this.

I love this.

The best

Dribbles

Will someone please find / make a gif of Spike doing one of his infamous drives to the hoop where he just keeps going on the other end instead of taking the shot. That always killed me. He just frustrated so many defenders with his antics.

Or maybe just give me some alley-oops. I could live with that.

Whoops. I didn't catch that.

Whoops. I didn't catch that. Sorry.

The point about him being included above "Not being nice" still stands though.

I agree

Is it more important that this guy is remembered for being a good football player (good enough to leave early), or that he beat the hell out of his girlfriend while her little brothers watched? "Not being nice" is extremely generous, but it's better than congratulating him for being good.

Except it's not an embarrassment for the league Except it's not an embarrassment for the league because no one cares.
We're a relic. Impressed by the optimists commenting now. This was worse than every Hoke year. I had considered the MSU game a win in spite of the last play, but this is probably a sign that we won't be "back" until Meyer and Dantonio retire.
Co signed Co signed
I think if you put the teams

I think if you put the teams in opposite shoes (Michigan blocks a State punt to win the game at the last minute) and this is last year where we were the underdog, then my opinion is that State doesn't feel hugely hurt by the outcome. They know they beat us and that the Wolverines boasts don't carry much weight. We might be bragging, but we wouldn't feel great either. We won on a fluke, and with Hoke as the coach we would all know that this was an aberration, not a sign of a new order.

The reality is that we did beat them in everything but the score. And this is with a crappy quarterback who can't throw 15+ yards down the field. The Sparties are mad because I think a lot of them realize that their dominance is over. We're going to crush these trash clowns for years now.

The only reason we were close enough to lose this game is because the officiating was so poor. I personally think the refs are not incompetent, rather they were trying to make sure State covered the spread. Michigan is a "public" team, had shut out three opponents in a row, and a ton of money was going their way. Tim Donaghy acknowledged that keeping games close is so much easier than swinging final outcomes. This was just a random event that came after a game full of referee score management.

Ugh.

There is no way to get me to stop reading an article about Michigan faster than the expression "Big Blue". That is not a thing.
