I think Corsi can be expressed either raw (total shot attempts/events) or Corsi% (total normalized to 100 events/game). So the numbers above are probably not adjusted to a percentage scale.
|1 week 1 hour ago||If he wanted to be here and||
If he wanted to be here and Red wanted him here, what's the big problem?
|1 week 5 hours ago||Well, Pearson ultimately did||
Well, Pearson ultimately did leave, so of the Pearson/Powers duo, 50% have branched off the tree. I'm not saying that no one wanted to hire M's assistants, it's probably more likely they just wanted to stay and coach under Red.
I just think that college hockey is a different culture, and can't be compared to football. There's not nearly the level of money and fame and expectations flying around, and hockey people are different anyway. Maybe they (Powers, and Pearson until Dave Brandon) like the stability of living in Ann Arbor, coaching a historic, successful program, and don't care to jump out to a more difficult situation (smaller school/conference, by definition not doing well since they likely just fired their coach).
Even the money doesn't really make sense to leave. According to UMSalary.info (no idea how accurate it is) Powers made $138k, Wiseman $121k (Red was at $254k). I assume you can add 25% in bonuses. How much more can they make as a head coach somewhere else? Is the jump of maybe 50-100k worth it for the risk, and the upheaval of changing jobs? Maybe, maybe not.

Why can't the schools themselves bid on hosting? Whether or not Michigan is in the tournament or games, a regional at Yost would be great, and do way more to grow the sport than going to random cities with few fans nearby. This isn't that hard to figure out, NCAA.

Big 4 tax accountant here. Good to finally be done with busy season. It's entertaining to read what other people think of tax season - the 1040s I work on are obviously way different than the average taxpayer's.
I did returns this year for my grandmother and another friend in Turbotax. They took way more time than they should have for as simple as they were.

Hockey isn't like football where there are 9 assistants to cycle through. Also not like basketball where there are 300+ schools to where an assistant can bounce to get a head coaching job (like Bacari and LaVall). There are just not that many jobs, and when guys like Red, Mason, York, and Lucia hang around schools for 20-30 years, it's hard to create the turnover required to have the kind of coaching tree there is in other sports.

I lol at the score requests. In this game, score is definitely just a statistic.
As Don Brown said at halftime, the game is much more about watching individual performances than how much one team scores or not.
I don't mean to call you out for asking, I'm just amused by the reaction of the fans.
|1 week 4 days ago||Dunno if anyone was watching||
Dunno if anyone was watching from the beginning, but as soon as it went on air they had a split screen shot, and the one on the right did not appear to know he was live. I heard a "I'm done with this shit" and the camera was swinging wildly on the sideline. Then they had the start stop issues.
Their 10th anniversary is this fall, you would think they can broadcast a spring game by now.

I mean, the team won 4 cups there and had so much success over the last 25 years. Yzerman and Lidstrom are legends and they played their whole career at JLA. Fight night and hockeytown and the 2002 team are things the fans will people will remember forever. It's fun to celebrate all that, it would be weird not to.

We should make our mascot Big Foot because it doesn't really exist but every so often someone claims to see it.

Drinking coffee because I'm working late from home. Need to sleep soon so I can wake up in the morning. Tax season.
Looking good in my bracket. Currently in 94th percentile nationally according to ESPN. Think my floor is 3rd in the work pool of 50+ people, and in the money. Currently 2nd and have UNC-Gonzaga in the final, with UNC winning the whole thing. When I started I didn't like the UNC pick but every few years I get lucky, I guess.

I think jumping to a 5 is crazy talk and I think it's better to be on the bottom of the bracket anyway. 6 should be comfortable but I wouldn't be surprised if we drop to 7 with a loss
The competition (on bracket matrix):
Interesting that the matrix has Minnesota a 5 and Northwestern a 9. To me, both seem like they should be in the 6-8 mix with us.

YNWA, except I'm missing the game unless my friend will put it on the TV at his St. Paddy's day party. Not likely. Anyway, hope they can get up to get revenge against Burnley, the first game was a disaster. Going to need every available point to keep pace in the top 4.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||I'm playing Devil's advocate||
I'm playing Devil's advocate - the B1G could still have screwed Michigan here and this report is just cover to keep all parties looking good and happy. Since Michigan won, Michigan can say they got what they wanted and it worked out while in reality the preference was shut down.
This could be interpreted to mean "Michigan got what they wanted out of a short list of undesirable options." Say Michigan said they wanted a later game and also for the Friday games moved so that M or IL would not have short rest, but the Purdue/B1G shut it down out of hand because of the myriad of logistical issues. So then the options are what time to play Thursday, and knowing you'll have a game at noon Friday - well then 12:20 is probably the best option.
As the Warde Manuel defenders all said on the threads where he was getting bashed: sometimes you play politics and let the other side save face. This may be one of those times. I'm not saying that you shouldn't take this at face value - but you probably shouldn't totally accept it at face value either.
In any case - Michigan won and will play tomorrow, so let's all celebrate that.

Don't you collect every on-court/field/ice uniform you can? If you can't get this one would it bother you?
|6 weeks 6 days ago||I would certainly keep||
I would certainly keep wearing them. Is there a white or blue set as well?
Nike is likely working on a replacement set for this and next weekend. It would be interesting to know what is going on right now. Does Nike/the school have enough replacements? Is the Michigan Maize color in stock, or are they special enough that they would have to be fabricated? Is the design custom for Michigan, or could Nike use a template like they have for most teams? How does the Jordan brand affect all this? Would Nike/Michigan be willing to "settle" for a generic jersey design if that's the easiest to make available to the team or will either side think that is unacceptable for a Jordan name brand? These are all my burning business questions that I will likely never get fully answered.

I just made up a stat - shot distance-to-points ratio. With all the 3s and a couple long twos, we have to be setting a record right now. It's fine to do that as long as shots are falling.
As I write that - Wilson get's the alley-oop from Irvin. Nice.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||That's what I was saying -||
That's what I was saying - not that I want all of Brandon with his nearly infinite faults, but I don't think anyone can deny that his first major "project" was a sucess. Contemptuousness in the situations that call for it is a great way to describe it - I wish we had that attitude/skill/whatever back.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||I can't believe I'm saying||
I can't believe I'm saying this but after this whole mess I want the Dave "Pimp Hand" Brandon back - the one that was our hero after he told the NCAA and local media where to put it during the practice time "violations" investigation. Everyone remember that?

I was gonna say that. And John Gibson - I believe they were consecutive years, right? I know Gibson has been in the NHL for a couple years now, what happened to Campbell?
You're right, after Hunwick left, the goalie situation has been rough. Not that the rest of the team has helped much to fix it.

I think it's actually kinda cool for an NFL team to play in such a small stadium. Better a small crowded atmosphere than an huge empty bowl (like the Rams in the Coliseum)

I never understand why fans get so upset over the back end of the roster. Newsflash, every team has some shitty backup catcher/25th man who can't hit. It really doesn't matter. Avila will play in maybe 25% of the games, if that.
The Tigers season will depend on how JV and JZ pitch/stay healthy, whether the three young starters keep growing, and getting continued excellence from the big stars in the lineup. Their performance this season is far more high leverage than whatever happens with AA.
