Full disclosure, I only saw the 2nd half of the game. Having said that, I was pretty unimpressed with GRIII. He still doesn't seem to be able to create his own shot. For a guy who has been so highly touted, why doesn't he put the ball on the floor and create his own shot?
Perhaps there were moments of that that I missed in the 1st half, but for the most part I felt like he was a non-factor when he was on the floor.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||RE: Hitch after Hitch/Pop pass||
Okay, so we know the interior O-line is a tire fire and Devin has had a problem as of late getting rid of the ball.
Borges' solution? Three-step drops all day long to hitch after hitch. Granted, it seemed that NW caught on to this strategy pretty quickly and there needs to be a counter to that. However, the counter is a deep pass to stretch the offense, a play Michigan cannot execute because the interior O-line can't hold up to the pressure.
What is the solution then? If quick passes don't work and we don't have the time for the long passes, and we can't run the ball, should we just go with the Offensive Strategy utilized in The Waterboy? Offense downs every play?
This whole passing canundrum makes no sense considering this team's average yard/completion.
WHY CANT WE DO ONE THING RIGHT CONSISTENTLY?

Those are nice seats.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Really..||
I will probably just have a few of these as is gameday tradition:

I would love those seats. Sadly, funds are short.

Let's insert a "what are/will you be drinking" post inside Brian's preview post. No one will suspect it. Here, I'll start:

for said status = livid.

somewhere on this blog that this was one of the lone marks against Mattison as a DC, his reluctance to blitz on those longer 3rd Down-ish, typical passing plays. I could be wrong, but I think the evidence in the last few years bears that out.
Generally I would agree with that too, but it would be nice if, in those circumstances, the LB would cover the middle a little better to prevent those back breaking 3rd down conversions.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||Wow, thanks.||
That's a great answer. There's that saying that time cures all wounds. I'm hoping that given another year, this OL can turn the corner. As you said, its not because the pedigree isn't there. Bosch, Kalis etc etc... I'm hoping to see a better OL in the future. Just how far into the future remains to me seen.
Also, this is me coming BACK on the air to respond. Thanks again.

Based on what you've seen this year, what is your "Not a Michigan Football Coach but smart football guy" take on this team's development? In your opinion, are a lot of the problems the team has faced this year in fact due to youth?
What would you like to see from this team to take the next step?
I'll take my response off the air, thanks!

What is the impetus for this question? If it is today's result then I question whether you watched the game. DG played his heart out and ate dirt b/c of a porous o-line. Michigan did not lose today because of Gardner.

|5 weeks 6 days ago||That.||
Stop. Everyone is allowed to their opinion, certainly, but this is getting stooopid. Brian thinks it's systematic. You think its binkies. I think opions are like (insert anatomical joke here) - everyone's got 'em.
If you think this is a humility problem then don't read the content. Don't let Brian ruin your day, brah.

Respect is something that is earned, and when you hold a public position like the HC/OC of a major college program criticism is expected. You get respect when you earn respect. Our coaching staff hasn't been earning that respect lately. Do a better job and that problem goes away.

Borges addressed this in his presser. It takes awhile for young running backs to adjust to the college defense, which is much more disciplined. In HS he could count on his speed/power to overcome adversity by bulldozing lesser players or jumping out to the edge. You can't do that at the college level. He'll figure things out as the coaches bring him along. I don't think we've seen all there is to see from Derrick Green yet.

What does it say about me that whenever I picture Jerry Kill I always do so as that fathead walrus?
|9 weeks 13 hours ago||You are wrong, sir||
According to Coach Hoke, it's only Defensive Linemen that God blesses. Remember that.

Thank you Little Giants quote of the day!
|9 weeks 1 day ago||To be fair||
And I'm not saying this as a Cowherd fan, but what he actually said was that Oklahoma City was getting the 2nd most amount of NBA coverage right now on ESPN, which, considering Russell Westbrook's recent surgery, is not a lie. The key, though, is that they are getting the 2nd most amount of coverage RIGHT NOW.
Obviously subject to change once the season gets into full swing. I wager we hear twice as much about the NYC teams as well as Chicago and the two LA teams by the time the actual season tips off. Miami, of course, gets all the talks.

Wait, you can do that? Is this like those State Farm Commercials?
Can I get a hot tub?
|10 weeks 1 day ago||If the alternative||
If the alternative is continued struggles throughout the season as we work out the kinks running IZ and OZ, isn't there a point where you say "this is who we are right now and we need to take what we can get"?
I totally agree that ISO cannot be your run offense, but I'm all for excising some of the more gimmicky plays (see repeated fails at the Jet Sweep*) for establishing a presence at the line of scrimmage. We can still be creative. Show different formations, different motions, things to throw off the defense.
It just seems that this team is mediocre at a number of things and really good at almost nothing save running Devin. Take out some of the more difficult running plays and let the O-Line go out and smack some dudes around.
*I am not calling for zero D. Norfleet, FWIW. Maybe, I don't know, use him as a slot receiver and throw him that oblong slice of pig skin.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||As our running game continued to suck against the likes of Akron||
and UCONN, I kept asking Al Borges (who NEVER gets back to me when I talk to him through the TV):
I realize ISO is not flashy/going to gain lots of yards. But if our O-Line is so much bigger/stronger than teams like Akron and UCONN (I know UCONN had a very large NT who beat up on J. Miller some) I would prefer to get steady yardage to help setup play action, which I don't recall a lot of, especially in the UCONN game.
Or maybe I was just to sad and into my beer to notice the play action?
Anyway, I'd take more consistency with the occasional big play, is what I'm trying to say.

The Denver Broncos and their league leading 7 TD quarterback would disagree with you.
