|2 weeks 4 days ago||Overlap with Auto Show?||
Since the CFB NCG is played in the first two weeks of January, and the NA Int'l Auto Show is typically right around that time, seems to me that it might be a shit show for football fans trying to get last minute hotel rooms during that period. I believe most of the 'quality' hotel rooms in the downtown are sold out, especially for the first few days of the NAIAS and during press week.
Would the NA Int'l Auto show consider pushing their event back a week to not suck up all the downtown hotels? Should Detroit win this bid, that would have to be coordinated, or else each would have a major impact the other.

Besides, could you imagine the good natured Hoke working for that fire breathing Kelly?

Not sure if I'll still be in the DFW area in a decade, but if I'm here (or even if I'm not), I would go to Austin to see team 14X play there.
My Cool Story Bro:
Actually went to a UT game in Austin about 4-years ago, just when the wheels were beginning to come off the Mack Brown bus. UT actually lost that day to a mediocre Iowa State squad, and it was amazing how nice and relatively hinged (as opposed to un-hinged) the UT faithful remained. No boos, jeers, and very few explatives were heard from my section. Nicest fans I've ever come across. Not to mention many lovely ladies, excellent BBQ at many tailgates. And, 6th Street in Austin cannot be beat for post-game libations and revelry.
One thing that did strike me that day...adverts in the stadium. I never realized up to that point how much it detracts from the in-stadium experience. Made me understand how much we need to keep up the good fight at UM and keep that part of our game-day experience unchanged.
|42 weeks 6 days ago||Nicely done.||
Don't let DB get a glimpse of this though, looks like fireworks are being shot out of the stadium...or lasers.

can't DB simply call up say, Nebraska's T.Osbourne, and make a deal to agree to play Nebraska in Lincoln two consecutive years in a row, therefore switching the current scenario and getting them at home on the opposite years of OSU and ND?
A line up of MSU, Iowa and Nebraska on the off-years of ND and OSU would seemingly even out our home strength of schedule, and provide a more palatable and desireable annual line-up of home games.

Those things don't bother me too much, I still love Bo and his legacy at Michigan.
I don't think you can measure success solely on Nat'l Championships. His Rose Bowl record wasn't the greatest, however he was the recipient of what I can only describe as bad luck.
We can play 'What If's' all day, but:
- heart attack before first Rose Bowl. I assume that diminished his team's ability to prepare & win the game, lost by 7.
- had undefeated Michigan gone to the 1973 Rose Bowl instead of OSU, and beat USC (which I don't believe is a stretch and is a logical assumption as both UM & OSU were pretty evenly matched teams that year), Bo could have had his Nat'l Championship in '73.
- had the refs properly called Chas.White's phantom touchdown a fumble in the 1979 Rose Bowl, the game outcome would have likely been different, garnering Bo a Rose Bowl victory, lost by 7.
|3 years 5 weeks ago||Let us not forget||
That the replacement stadium mantra was actually started by none other than our beloved Bo Schembechler, who at the time (early 90's) was the General Manager for the Tigers under then owner Tom Monahan.
Ever cantankerous, it was Bo who came up with the "...you're not going to shackle me to a rusty girder...." comment in regards to Tiger Stadium. For someone who so loved the lore of Michigan Stadium, the nails where Fielding Yost hung his hat, the chairs where Fritz Crisler sat, his disregard for the lore and history of TS doesn't add up.
He was dead wrong on Tiger Stadium and dead wrong on Ernie. In all likelihood, he was just carrying out his marching orders from Monahan, who I always thought was too much of a weasle to put any of this out there as his own opinion. It's like him walking into the HC position at Michigan and saying that the University should fire Bob Ufer and tear down and fill in the nearly 50-year old "hole that Yost Built".
I love the man, but IMHO, his stint with the Tigers was his darkest period and the only thing that carries any blemish on his legacy.

I commend them for selecting a field in the city, however I remember reading a few years back that when the new Cass Tech high school & football field was constructed, it was not built to regulation size, something like 95 yards, goal line to goal line.
I suppose once you add in the end zones there would be enough length for a minimum soccer pitch, but barely, especially if they don't remove the football goalposts. Wayne State could have been another decent city-based choice too.

I do ditto his thoughts on how ridiculous the signing day fan-fare and attention has become. A decade ago you barely knew who any new signees were, maybe only a random blue chipper that was local and written up in the paper...now we know what they eat for breakfast.

are through the roof as well. Since I live in the DFW area, have been tracking the possibility for a Suite with the Cowboys ticket office for the last few months. Suites will be sold thru via the Cowboys, not the universities.
Last fall, the estimate for a 36 seat, 52 occupant suite was $30K, and for a 52 seat, 68 occupant suite was $40K. Pricing that came out yesterday the costs have bumped to $50K and $75K, respectively.
I think that effectively rules out our group getting a suite.

is pretty much public knowledge. I believe it was Gee that even confirmed it, however he stated it was at the players' request, not the administrations.
|3 years 23 weeks ago||Couldn't agree more w/ Seth||
I frankly do not think this penalty is harsh at all. A one year bowl ban is not all that significant; there should have been at least two.
I don't think the scholarships amount to much of anything either. This is not OSU losing recruits, only a couple border-line second & third stringers who likely would never see the field anyway. Urb's simply trims the dead-wood at the periphery of the roster, and keeps right on recruiting the 22-24 kids as typical.
In all, it's better than the wrist slap I think most were anticipating, but this is only a speedbump to their program.
|3 years 23 weeks ago||Show Cause||
So does a Show Cause prohibit any further Tressel contact with the program? I suppose now that Urb's in the man at the helm he wouldn't likely come back for additional pep-talks, but I presume you never can tell.

|3 years 30 weeks ago||Parking is a challenge||
I lived in IA City/Coralville for a couple years...gameday parking is definitely a challenge. In the few instances I actually drove to a game, the only available parking was in the hospital parking deck basically across the street from Kinnick. The deck sucks for tailgating, and getting out after the game literally takes hours. They don't park on their golf course and sidestreet parking near the stadium is prohibited if I recall correctly, but like A2, some folks do offer up their yards for a small fee. Try Melrose street.
There is a train called the Hawkeye Express which runs between the mall in Coralville directly to Kinnick (roughly 2 mile ride). Google Hawkeye Express, should find a web info page. It makes parking easy (mall parking), but it stops running something like 90 mins after the game is over, so if you don't catch it, you're fukked. Drinking on the train was not verboten (at least 5 yrs ago it wasn't), but you basically lose your ability to tailgate with any sort of football atmosphere where you park. You'll have to worm your way into someone elses tailgate closer to the stadium. There are some great house parties across the street from Kinnick, but getting access isn't always easy or guarnteed.
Try hawkeyesports.com has a gameday parking map for "official" lots
You might be able to find some parking in lots along Highway 6 in Coralville and hoof it up to the stadium, there is a great little bar called the Wig & Pen on Hwy 6 (great pizza) which is not too far to walk, and a neighboring sports bar called the Vine.
Kinnick is a great place to see a game, best described as intimate? Expect Hawkeye fans to generally be courteous but not overly friendly. While not EL or Columbus, they are fanatical about their team and they really seem to not like Michigan very much, so you'll take some heckling (mostly good natured) in the stadium. If you make your way down to the pedestrian mall in IC after the game (recommended), you'll likely take a lot of schitt for wearing your MI garb. Lots of drunk students, but the Ped Mall rivals any Big 10 college drinking scene with great late night food carts as a bonus.
I suspect hawkeye fans are reeling a little this year from their painful losses to ISU and Minny, so they may a little more subdued than in previous years.
|3 years 30 weeks ago||Well maybe...||
...Muschamp himself registered the website domain "firewillmuschamp.com" as a pre-emptive measure. Just sayin, if I was a coach the thought might cross my mind.
|3 years 30 weeks ago||Pics or it didn't happen||
I actually was working on a project in IC back in '05/'06 when Kinnick was doing their stadium and pressbox expansion. Was fortunate enough to know the Construction Manager that was performing the renovation, and got to tour the new section of Kinnick (south end) which contains the home & visitor's locker rooms.
I snapped a few pics, thought I'd share...everything, and I do mean everything in there was pink or as close as you can get. Lockers, walls, carpet, toilet partitions, tile, toilets & sinks (sort of rose colored, not truly pink).
