Former co-owner of a 1976 Swan 431 sloop with 4 college friends.  Collectively, we sailed from NYC to Spain the long way (I was onboard from NYC to Tahiti and Thailand to Turkey).  Hoping to do it again someday, but this time each on our own boats with our families.

This is such a lazy take.

Not a fan (don't like the crust).  I prefer Pizzeria Uno or even Giordano's.  Nothing compares to a late night slice of spinach deep dish from Chicago's Pizza on the way home from a night out though.

Mandel thinks Michigan has…

Mandel thinks Michigan has multiple paths to the playoffs even with a loss to Iowa.  I have no interest in testing out that theory, but thought it was interesting nonetheless.

I wish it were true (outside of fandom).  But even if Duggan wasn't actually better, their dad Dan was probably the best Fife of all, and a Michigan Wolverine too.

It's weird that after all…

It's weird that after all the time Fife spent at MSU, some people only associate him with Loyer and Kithier (who committed to MSU when he was still at Macomb Dakota) as though there were some sort of pattern of Fife bringing in underperforming Clarkston kids.

After becoming the youngest head coach in college basketball (at the time), I always assumed he would parlay his MSU gig into another head coaching position after a couple of years. I guess the shine is off the star.

Maybe because he and his colleagues rushed to publicize a poorly-designed study (in this they've been far from alone this year), disregarded warnings from colleagues about the accuracy of the antibody test utilized, and hid the fact that the study was partially funded by JetBlue's outspoken anti-lockdown founder David Neeleman .  The source of the funding would have been less of an issue had they not tried to hide it as well of the fact that they was in direct communication with Neeleman during the study.  At the very least it's a bad look.

I thought so too, but there was a study that just came out indicating that Gen Z / young Millennials were more susceptible to Coronavirus misinformation than other generations.  Could be something specific to coronavirus misinformation, but still surpised me.

Hmm...while technically true, that's a supreme effort at "both sidesing it" (literally).  Maybe your "slight lean" isn't so slight after all.

Mayfield already signed with an agent.  Small chance he could try to come back and ask for an exception (like the ASU punter I believe), but not sure it's something he would even consider at this point.

No, it's not easy, but that doesn't mean the outcome is acceptable. I haven't seen anyone turn the guy into a "saint".  I don't care how many priors he did or didn't have, he didn't deserve to die for his actions. Be arrested and tried for them?  Absolutely.  Be shot in the back?  No way.

While true that he is currently steering players away from Michigan, the guy grew up a huge Michigan fan.

Really, "all" of the models have been "way off"?  Some of them have, sure, but not all.  And as the input data expands and improves, so do the models; hence the increasingly narrow range of projected outcomes.  Explore this for a few minutes:  https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/covid-forecasts/?ex_cid=rrpromo

Both he and Max Christie…

Both he and Max Christie were NU ballboys and both have at least one parent who was a Northwestern student-athlete.  But of course rather than joining forces to lead NU hoops out of the dark ages, Chris Collins is the coach and they'll both go elsewhere.

Study after study has shown that limits on where cash assistance is spent do more harm than good.  People will spend it where it needs to be spent.  Just because someone is unemployed doesn't mean they're irresponsible and need to be babysat.  Funny how certain people are all about personal liberty until, well...

Why are Hole and Yoder being put in the same sentence?  The first is a legit reporter and the second is an attention-seeking yahoo.

This list is ridiculous.  Miami (OH) at #70?  No way it shouldn't be at least top 25.  And Northwestern at #120?  Sure, the architecture is all over the place, but it's hard to beat that lakeside setting.  There's no rhyme or reason to this list.

Sad and crazy that of all…

Sad and crazy that of all the places you mentioned, only Joy Yee's was around when I was on campus.  Edzo's arrived after I left, but I've been back to try it and I highly recommend it.  Definitely get the truffle fries.

You sure about that?

I haven't been following his

I haven't been following his recruitment at all and have no inside info.  I just mentioned it because his decision date is approaching soon, Indiana is controlling his Crystal Ball, and many of those predictions have come in recently (i.e. Indiana has Crystal Ball momentum, for whatever that's worth).

Loyer to MSU was a done deal

Loyer to MSU was a done deal long before Izzo found himself in this current pot of hot water.  My guess is that Dane was/is angling for heir apparent.

Hi Frank. 04.02.2018. GO BLUE!

I doubt he sees the field this year. Probably take I doubt he sees the field this year. Probably take a redshirt and then I think the best we can hope for is that he sees spot duty as a 5th year senior.
Hug protocol

1999 - Clarkston over Macomb Dakota 57-56 in 4OT in the MI D1 Football Regional Championship game.  Tied the game with 12 seconds left in regulation, then in the final OT scored on 4th down before converting a fake PAT for the 2-point conversion and the win.  Multiple hug protocols during that game.

2001 - Northwestern over MSU my freshman year - 3 lead changes in the final 32 seconds of the game (NU TD followed by an MSU kick-off return TD, followed by a 54-yard Hail Mary and finally a winning 47-yard field goal kicked as time expired).  NU was ranked 16th at the time and following up a B10 title in 2000.  Unfortunately, NU's season fell apart, but this win felt momentarily great, and all the better that it was over MSU.

2002 - Larionov's winner in the 3rd OT  - Stanley Cup Finals Game 3 (actually escalated to piggyback ride protocol)

Dane is Dan's son, and was

Dane is Dan's son (not brother), and was the last Clarkston player to win Mr. Basketball back in '98.  Dan and Dane's brother Duggan both played at Michigan, but Dane went to IU and captained the Hoosiers to the Championship game in '02 before they fell to Maryland.

Spurning the Wolverines for IU was bad enough (not sure what his recruitment was like but it would be hard for me to believe that UM wasn't after an in-state Mr. Basketball winning legacy), but going Sparty was worse.

He had 20 and 10.  Sounds like Matt D was there, so maybe he could fill in more details.

What's this all about?

You're joking, right?  Fife

You're joking, right?  Fife has never actively recruited that I know of.  However, he has a great reputation in the state, and a few players have transferred in over the years of their own accord in order to be coached by him.  Even taking that into account, the number of players that have transferred into Clarkston over the years is well below that of many other powerhouse programs.

Backpacking in ignorant bliss

Was backpacking in the UP in the Porcupines.  No cell reception and no clue what was going on until the next day when we ran into two hikers coming the other way at the Presque Isle River.  They tried to explain to us what had happened, but didn't really have a good grasp on it themselves (there was still a lot of confusion at that point, and rumors flying around), so it was like a bad game of telephone.

Went to the nearest gas station so the girls from NY could use the payphone and check in back home.  The only newspaper they had was the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal, so we bought a few copies and read as much about it as we could on the way home.  Still didn't feel real though and the pictures just looked like ads for a summer blockbuster.  It was't until we got back to campus and saw the tv coverage that it really started to sink in.  Years later dated a girl from NYC who watched the towers fall while standing in the street.  Our experiences that day could not have been much different.

Africa - Namibia

Africa - Namibia (specifically the rural roads between the Fish River Canyon and Sossusvlei)

Asia - Sri Lanka (Sigiriya, Adam's Peak, beaches of the southern coast)

Middle East - Oman (wadis, deserted coastlines)

Oceania/Pacific - Fatu Hiva, Marquesas

North America - Glacier National Park (among many, many others)

South America - Ciudad Perdida (Lost City), Colombia (objectively not as beautiful as Machu Picchu, but subjectively the solitude and sense of discovery at la Ciudad Perdida make it more beautiful)

Caribbean - San Blas Islands (Kuna Yala), Panama

City - Cape Town, South Africa

Skiing - Gulmarg, Kashmir

Left out Europe since I haven't seen enough of it to opine.

As far as Perú goes, both the Sacred Valley and the Colca Canyon are great, but the Cordillera Huayhuash and Cordillera Blanca near Huaráz are even more stunning.  A bit further north, in Ecuador, there's a spot on a trail in the Andes directly between El Altar (17,500ft.) and Chimborazo (20,500 ft.) that offers views of both and is absolutely unbeatable at sunset.
