I'm not sure it makes much difference to Minnesota who we start. If we play Gardner, Minnesota stacks the box, blitzs like hell, and dares Gardner to beat them with his arm.
If we play Morris, Minnesota stacks the box, blitzs like hell, and dares Morris to beat them with his arm. Only difference is they don't have to account for Morris' legs like they would with Gardner.
If Hoke is trying to play his cards close to the chest, I get it. Don't give Minnesota more time to prepare for one QB or the other. But I really don't think it makes much difference. Both QBs at this point are turnover machines.

I should be doing work right now, but I'll bite:
The Horror - Easily a 10, and it always will be. Nothing this team does, now or in the future, will ever erase the stench of that loss. ESPN will always talk about it, and opposing rivals will never let you forget it. In many ways, it set this program back several years, and we're still feeling the ramifications from it. While many say Michigan's downfall started after we lost to OSU back in '06, I think this was really the begin of our plummet.
Toledo '08 - Maybe its higher for others, but I'll leave it at an 8. We all knew we weren't going to be good that year, but it was losing to a MAC team for the first time in program history, so that's pretty darn bad. Still, a lot of outsiders don't remember this one like they remember the Horror. I more remember losing to MSU for the first time in what felt like forever, and getting seal-clubbed by OSU.
Stretchgate - For me, its a 9. I didn't fully understand what was going on at the time, admittedly, but what pisses me off about it is that there was so much momentum going into that season, and the Freep had to go on a witch hunt. Deceiving players into giving incriminating quotes that were presented way out of context is just despicable. I'm embarrassed about it, but not for our players, nor even the coaches. I'm just embarrassed that journalists would sink so low as to try and sabotage a program like that, all for a story. I'd love to see Brian and Snyder get into a fistfight.
Cokegate - 10. Easily. This is frickin' kindergarten stuff. I'm not even sure minor league baseball teams would stoop as low as to give away free tickets with soda purchases. If you need to give away tickets to fill up the stadium, fine. You have a crappy product and everyone knows it. But give them away to good causes, like Wounded Warrior, the Vet Hospital, or Boys and Girls Clubs or SOMETHING. Its just one more black eye on our football program, the athletic department, and the university as a whole. One more reason for the entire country to laugh at us. I hope whoever initiated that "marketing strategy" spent this morning cleaning out their office.

It was a loss at home to a very meh Pac-12 team. One that we should have been able to take care of at home, where Hoke's teams are traditionally very good. It wasn't just that we lost. We looked completely outclassed, at least on the offensive side of the ball. It'd be one thing if Oregon, Stanford or UCLA came in and did that to us. This was Utah.
Not to mention that this was the second time this season that we've played a power-5 opponent, and they've completely shut us out of the red zone. That says a LOT about your team.
I think the Utah game really just laid all the cards out on the table. Notre Dame was at least away, and they've looked really good to start the season. The Utah game you can look at and definitively say we've hit a really bad rough patch. Utah is not that good, and they beat us convincingly. That's why our world is upside down right now.

Steve Spurrier walked into a situation with, in all likelihood, ZERO expectations. South Carolina had never amounted to anything as a program, and was competing in the toughest conference in football. Quite a far cry from Michigan, a traditional powerhouse where the expectation is to win conference titles and compete for national titles almost every year. Spurrier could set up shop quietly, amongst a fanbase that likely had (at the start) very low expectations. Lou Holtz couldn't accomplish anything at South Carolina, so I doubt the bar was set really high for Spurrier when he came in.
Steve Spurrier also had the benefit of being a proven winner. I know 5-6 seasons is quite a while to wait for success, but I think fans are willing to be a little more patient with a guy who's won national titles than a guy who comes in with a sub .500 record in the MAC and MWC.
Comparing apples to oranges, my friend.

If this had been actually true, I think this blog would go into nuclear holocaust mode.
Admittedly, it did give me a bit of a chuckle, though. That was after I realized that it was all a gag.

After the tire fire Kiffin left at USC, I hope DB never even remotely considers the option.
He had one good year, and then crumbled under expectations.

I really can't get behind crap like this. If nothing else, go to support the players who are busting their asses in practice every day to provide entertainment for people like us. That's what this all is at the end of the day. Pure entertainment. Even if Michigan loses again on Saturday, I personally guarantee all of you that the sun will come up on Sunday morning.

I don't like laughing at injuries to anyone, but it's hard not to in this case. I mean come on. This is pretty damn funny.
|1 day 8 hours ago||1) I say at this point, give||
1) I say at this point, give the reins to Shane and see what he can do. I don't want to pile on Gardner so I won't. He's given us some truly heroic performances, and I appreciate everything he's done for the program. But moral victories in football are few and far between. The only thing that matters (unfortunately) is wins and losses. And Gardner is not helping us win football games. Not entirely his fault, but he's looking progressively worse each week. Give the reins to Shane, the type of QB Hoke claims he's always wanted, see if he can develop under Nuss, and hope for the best. Gardner has a good head on his shoulders, and he'll be successful no matter what he does.
2) Don't know enough about defensive X's and O's, so I can't really comment here. Defense has played pretty well, all things considered. The offense just consistently puts them in bad spots like it did most of last year. Maybe some changes need to be made, but I'm not smart enough on football to comment on what they should be.
3) If you stick with Gardner, potentially abandon the running game and potentially air it out 80-90% of the game. We've certainly shown some potential in the passing game, but someone other than Funchess has to step up for that to happen. Beyond that, I can't say what we should do. The run game is getting slightly better, as is the O-Line, but not enough where I can say we should start leaning on that.
4) Aside from benching Gardner for Shane, I don't really think so. I think defensively, the guys are playing as well as they can. Not going to get much better than what we've got with Green and Smith, and the same goes for the wideouts. More OL lineup changes are just going to create more setbacks in my opinion. And while this is just me, I would not start giving Peppers offensive reps just yet. Yeah yeah yeah he's an explosive playmaker, but I want him to lock down and know his own position first before giving him more playbooks to deal with. The kid is still only a freshman.

We may not be favored the rest of the way, outside of maybe Northwestern. We might only be favored in this game because we have a good run defense and Minnesota can't throw the ball at all.

Jimmy is an NFL guy, and that's it. He's not coming to Michigan. Even if the 49ers ditch him, there will be 4-5 teams, at least, that will vie for his services. Giants, Raiders, Bills, Jets, Cowboys, and maybe the Dolphins will all bend over backwards to grab him if he comes on the market. We've got the money to compete with them, but the glamour of an NFL job is MUCH more alluring than just about any college gig. And especially moreso than a has-been program in the worst conference in America.

Agreed. They'd had years of mediocrity before he showed up, and all he's done is brought them to 3 conference title games and a Super Bowl appearance. Any franchise would kill to have that kind of track record.

I will never question Gardner's heart or his desire to win. His performance against OSU last year, while on a broken foot, was nothing short of legendary.
|2 days 9 hours ago||I wonder if anyone has||
I wonder if anyone has thought about Chris Bohl out at Wyoming. He's not a big name guy, but he built a Bama-esque dynasty at North Dakota State. In fact what he did at NDSU is likely more impressive than what Saban did at Bama. 3 straight titles and his old team d likely making it 4 in a row.

If we're paying good money, then yes I would. Michigan still has top notch money, and the facilities are as good as they are anywhere. Resources are there to compete for national titles. Just need the right coach.

At this rate, Gardner will not get drafted. He's got a great physical frame and the mobility NFL scouts are looking for, but he has horrific mechanics and his turnover rate is appalling. That's enough to scare any scout away. At this rate, he goes undrafted.
