I've seen UH play in person (wife is from Oahu), and the issue is undeniably money. There's more than enough fan support to keep the team going, but the state is not willing to spend what's necessary to refurbish Aloha Stadium (which is a dump) or build a new one. It doesn't help that the NFL has waffled on continuing to play the Pro Bowl there -- a commitment to continue that game and the tourism dollars it generates could provide a push to get the stadium renovated. However, massive cost overruns on a public railway system leaves nothing in the coffer for football. Money is what caused them to lose June Jones -- his and his staff's salaries and the infrastructure expenses -- and they've been a tire fire since he left. As I recall, it cost the AD his job, and there has been talk about shutting down the program if they can't figure out how to fund it properly. It's a shame, since football is really big on Oahu.

I'm on the board of the U of M Club of Northern New Jersey, and we will definitely be partnering with the NYC club to reserve blocks for the games. We will send out details as soon as they're available.

There are actually 2 main reasons why the tailgate was cancelled.
First, while the event had indoor space, part of the tailgate was planned to be outdoors. As a result, there was a safety concern that there would not be enough room to have everyone inside at once.
Second, as alluded to above, there was concern that the food vendors would not be able to adjust to the earlier schedule to ensure that the event would be properly catered.
At the end of the day, the Alumni Association isn't going to half-ass anything. They'd rather get a little egg on their face and cancel the event before they would charge people money for something that would be of less value than the cost to the membership. I think it's both prudent and smart, and there's no harm to the alums who paid and will get a refund.

I was one of the football beat writers for the Daily in 1990. From above in the press box, watching the stadium go berzerk during Desmond's TD return to tie the game at 21 was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. For the 2-pt conversion, I can tell you that we (the Daily writers), and just about everyone else in the press box, were equally stunned that there was no flag and that it wasn't called a catch regardless. We were so incensed by the result that we actually debated running a headline as though Michigan had won the game, 29-28, but then we remembered that we're journalists and it probably wouldn't be a very good idea.
The Iowa loss the following week was because of a stupid decision to go for 2. Moeller used to have the o-line far off to the left while the center, holder and kicker were properly positioned. The holder liked that the D wasn't set properly, so he called for the snap and the conversion failed. Could have used that point, obviously.
That team lost 3 games by a total of 6 points and was probably the best team Michigan has had other than the 1997 championship team. Wound up in a 4-way tie for the conference title (the 3rd of 5 straight), and obliterated an overmatched Ole Miss team in the Gator Bowl with over 700 yards of offense -- an unheard of amount in the pre-Denard era. That team should have won a national championship -- they were good enough to do it. Shameful that the Sparty result took that possibility away.

My sophomore year, and my seats were near what was supposedly guys from the hockey team. One of the hockey guys came to the game in a wheelchair, just so they could sneak in a pony keg at the back of the chair and do keg stands all game. It was awesome - wished I could have pulled that off.
Even better, there was a college age Miami (YTM) fan sitting nearby who was rooting a little too hard for the Canes dressed in his Miami gear. These same guys that were supposedly from the hockey team picked the Canes fan up and ripped all of his clothes off him down to his boxers. No joke. He ran out of the stadium and came back less than 10 mins later wearing all Michigan stuff. The whole section stared at him when he walked back in, and he just held up an index finger and said, "Michigan - No. 1" and the student section cheered. It was crazy - if we could have, we would have had subs.

FWIW, I have known Jedd since we were both kids in NJ (though I'm 6 years older and was closer in age to his brother). He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Even though he's well-traveled, he will do really well for Michigan and the players will definitely like him - very relatable guy. Congrats to Jedd and congrats to us on such a great hire!

The last (and possibly only) Michigan team to have all 5 starters drafted in the first round is actually 1987-88 - Grant, Rice, Mills, Vaught and Robinson.

I was lucky enough to have been at PSU, at home for Ohio and at the Rose Bowl in the '97 season as well as UTL1, despite the fact that I graduated in '91 and live in NJ. (I pick 'em well.) It's almost impossible to choose from among those games, which are the most memorable for me.

Why were several posts, including mine, labeled as overrated? Seems rather arbitrary when the overwhelming number of posts were simply predicting the score, again including mine.

My wife is from Hawaii, and I've been to this game before. The only time they can sell tickets to it is when UH is in the game, and they are ALWAYS in it if they're over .500 (unless of course they win their conference and have to go to the Holiday Bowl -- or whatever game the winner of their conference goes to now -- or if they go undefeated again sometime in the next 100 years and wind up in a BCS game like when they got routed by Georgia in the Sugar Bowl 4 years ago).
