On that last awful looking…

On that last awful looking play it looks like maybe Edwards was either hurting or felt like his knee was going to give on the cut.  That step at the cut just looks off like he's worried his knee is giving out.  The fact that he didn't really look engaged going into the cut makes me wonder if he had tweaked it before that but not enough to ask out - maybe thinking he'd be able to run through it?

This makes sense but I think…

This makes sense but I think where it breaks down some is that the committee doesn't have to pre-publish any of this.  So in Trig's world the committe could do things like say "oh we can't not have an SEC team so let's leave FSU out" in one scenario where before hand if they had to lay it out before hand they'd likely follow that same logic.

I think this chart (from here https://topdan.com/college-football-conference-records/2023.html) makes it pretty clear that based on the limited number of cross conference games available neither the SEC or B1G has a lot of claim to really being able to say that it's clear that the SEC or B1G are clearly stronger THIS year (if anything the PAC10 should be the ones getting extra consideration).  Of course SEC homers will point to years past and their success in the playoff while ignoring TX beating Alabama on the road.

(sorry in advance if this doesn't embed well)

Great stuff as always.

This…

Great stuff as always.

This one has me a bit confused though since service academies don't have redshirts, and hence no 5th year seniors, much less 11th

I am saying this game was the passing equivalent of when the service academies throw their 11th year seniors' triple-options against each other.

Answering my own question…

Answering my own question below it looks like they did get committee approval for 3 games.  From the full letter to UM:

Because this disciplinary action constitutes “Major Disciplinary Action” under the Sportsmanship Policy, on November 10, 2023, I sought and received approval for such discipline from the JGEC. Pursuant to Section 10.3.3.2 of the Sportsmanship Policy, the JGEC’s decision to approve the disciplinary actions imposed herein is final and not subject to appeal.

Even if the punishment was…

Even if the punishment was deemed allowed didn't the rules preclude anything over 2 games?

10.3.3.1 Standard Disciplinary Action. Standard disciplinary actions shall include admonishment, reprimand, fines that do not exceed $10,000, and suspensions from no more than two contests

Or is there some "non-standard" version that supposedly allows this?

I was shocked they fired him…

I was shocked they fired him.  This may well end up being a "be careful what you wish for" situation.  Before Paul Johnson Navy was awful for 2 decades.  They went to 11 bowl games and won 6 under coach N.  Had a winning record against Army.

They slid a bit, sure, but between COVID impacting all Academies (no 5th/6th years), joining a conference (record was going to slip) and Army finally not having a schlub for a coach for the first time since the 90's (and sharing the same recruiting pool) it was bound to happen and for the Army/Navy record to even out a bit.

Sounds like they fired him at his locker right after the loss.  Dick move.  He deserved better.

A few that I think are great…

A few that I think are great that I haven't seen listed:

Andy Gill - Gang of Four - such a unique sound/style

Michael Karoli - Can - doesn't stand out but that's the point of Can's music - everything just flows

Tom Verlaine - Television - the swirling guitars on their debut are so good

Interestingly the 1 seed is…

Interestingly the 1 seed is statistically much better.  I think this largely has to do with usually having at least a few one seeds that are head and shoulders better than the field.

A flip side to this though…

A flip side to this though is don't overly penny pinch.   I tend to be really conservative with money so when we were buying our first house in the Detroit area we settled on a neighborhood/town that wasn't where we really wanted to be because the towns we liked better were too expensive.

In hindsight, especially with the Detroit housing crash, we would have been better off going for the more desirable locations which declined less and recovered faster.  We could have afforded it without extending ourselves too much - especially accounting for income growth that occurred while we were there.

I'm a fan of the 30 year…

I'm a fan of the 30 year mortgage with making an extra mortgage principal payment each month to knock it down to the near equivalent of a 15 year mortgage as well.  That flexibility to go back to the lower payment in case of job loss or other financial stressor is worth the fractionally higher payment over 15 years in my opinion.  The key is to make sure you set up and make those extra principal payments.

This is where I think replay…

This is where I think replay can hurt the game.  In the "old days" if you swiped the ball out of someone's hands, like happened there, it went to the team that had possession because we assumed the person swiping the ball touched it last unless it clearly deflected off a leg, or had a clear, obvious re-touch from the offensive player trying to regain possession.  That's basically what our eyes tell us - the person that swatted the ball out of the offensive players hand knocked it out of bounds..

Enter replay and now in super slow motion it might have rolled off Teske's fingers as it's leaving his hand.  Not enough that it can be seen in real time.  To me it's not even indisputable, but looks probable that it was last on Teske's fingers.   It's become so inconsistent - it's burned us twice but in other games I've watched it stayed with the person that lost the ball even though it looked the same.  I think they need to tweak the rule somehow to account for what's effectively the act of leaving the person's hand when it's swatted away.

These are good points.

EVs…

These are good points.

EVs get cleaner as more and more of the grid leaves coal behind.  Natural gas, wind and solar are becoming the norm for new build.

People in areas with high wind generation, even if there is a lot of coal generation, are likely greener than the average mix of the grid.  Wind in most of the US tends to blow harder at night so in many areas, other than spinning reserves most if not all of the generation is coming from wind during charging.

ICE vehicles get dirtier as old engines are even less efficient.  Oil extraction is also getting dirtier as we tap more reserves in the tar sands, offshore, and in shale.

I was sad to see the Volt…

I was sad to see the Volt get nixed as well.  The people I know that drive them really like them, and I think they fill a nice slot for those that need (or really want) range without the compromise still needed for EVs.  Plug-in Hybrids have their downside in overall complexity of both electric and gas drive systems but I do think they are a nice option.

I'd seriously consider picking up a used Volt myself - my daughter is a few years from driving but could see us getting a used Bolt, Leaf or Volt for her in a few years.   Might lean to the Bolt or Leaf as I love the added safety of EVs not having the engine so having increased frontal crumple zones - another underrated aspect of EVs.   She won't need range so even old Leaf's with limited range could work well.

Ford did not take TARP money…

Ford did not take TARP money but did take government loans.

Ford did not receive any money under AIFP, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t get any federal assistance.

In a Jan. 30, 2009, report on the bailout program, the Congressional Research Service noted that Ford “is counting on $5 billion from the DOE loan program to support a $14 billion plan to reorient its lineup toward more fuel-efficient vehicles.” On June 23, 2009, the Department of Energy announced it would provide $5.9 billion to Ford “to transform factories across Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio to produce 13 more fuel efficient models.

I believe those are not fully paid off yet although perhaps they have been.  My point isn't to tar Ford rather to point out that people love to point to Tesla when other auto companies received as much or more help.   I'd argue that Tesla, whether they survive or not, has made better use of their government funds in introducing more fuel efficient vehicles than Ford has.

Which facts are wrong?   I'm…

Which facts are wrong?   I'm just refuting your incorrect facts.   You state they are subsidized and provide no facts to support this.   I'm not saying they are or aren't using financial trickery.  I am saying that I see it all the time in anti-Tesla forums flat out false assertions with BS "facts".  I don't have a problem with legitimate concerns about Tesla (will demand remain, is their lack of transparency hiding something or just them running their business as do many other - e.g. Microsoft no longer breaking out Xbox revenue like they used to, etc.).   I do have a problem with flat out false assertions that the shorts constantly peddle.

Oh...and Tesla is a ponzi…

Oh...and Tesla is a ponzi scam.  Any first year accounting student who reads their financials can tell you there are problems with this company.  Everyone thinks they are a future Amazon but they're smoke & mirrors propped up on government money

Care to explain how Tesla is "propped up by government money"?   They received a $465M loan from the US Gov (far less than GM, Ford Chrysler by the way) and paid it back with interest ahead of schedule (something Ford has yet to do).

Buyers of their cars, and every other EV makers cars are eligible for a tax credit - but that's not unique to Tesla.

The only other incentives have been state level - mainly from Nevada to attract the Giga factory.  Again no different than states all over trying to lure Amazon, GM plants, etc.

I understand the sentiment…

I understand the sentiment and agree that EVs will need to get there, or close for large scale adoption.

I do think people tend to notice what EVs can't do (range, time to fill-up) but don't realize how nice some of the things that it eliminates/changes are.

  • I don't miss standing in the cold for 5-10 minutes a week waiting to fill my car up.  About 20 seconds to plug in every night and ready to roll in the morning.  It may take a bit longer the few times per year I travel over 200 miles but at least then I can go in and have a coffee or just keep the car on with heat.  My old bladder can't handle 500 miles non-stop anyway - get it to 20 minutes every 3 hours and I'd say it's a win for EVs
  • I don't miss the smell of gas when it occasionally drips on my hand, shoe, etc.
  • I don't miss waking up and not having a full tank of gas or being part way to work when the gas light reminds me I forgot to fill up.  It's great having a "full tank" every morning with no effort
  • I don't miss oil changes, coolant flushes etc.  Very little maintenance other than tire rotations and windshield wiper fluid needed for EVs
  • I enjoy that I occasionally get to park somewhere like Boulevard Brewing and get free charging while I enjoy a beer.  No one ever bought me a free tank of gas :)

EVs certainly aren't perfect and don't fit every lifestyle yet, but they are fantastic for those that have access to charging at home or work, aren't constantly travelling long distance to the point it becomes too much to trade-off the daily time savings (and don't have an ICE in the family for trips also).

As long as you don't need…

As long as you don't need the full range everyday (normal commute) and have access to charge everyday I don't think the cold will be as big a factor as many think.

I have a Model 3 Mid-range that I've been driving all winter in KS.  We've had a mixed winter with a few extremely cold days and some in the 50s.   Last Monday was a low of 1 and high of 14 and I specifically wanted to see how range was impacted so paid close attention.  I charge to 80% and preheat the cabin while plugged in.  I drove my normal long commute of 65 miles RT of mixed highway and city, parked all day at work until about 6:30.  I ended up about 12% lower than on the warmer days.  Not insignificant but still more than enough charge.

About 5% of the loss just from the car sitting at work so it could be problem if someone say charged every other day or something as the slow drain would increase more.  It's also less efficient before it warms up as regenerative braking is limited, so I'd expect less loss on longer trips.

Because we are so used to gasoline cars and fuel stations everywhere we tend to forget that gas cars also lose significant range - 12-20% for short trips https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/coldweather.shtml.

If superchargers become faster  and more densly populated and range continue to go up we'll probably forget about it on EVs as well.

As for the farm...well maybe once Rivian comes out with their pickup?  It looks pretty promising.

I want to see their…

I want to see their statements break out carbon credit revenue from everything else.

You mean like this from their 10-K notes?

Revenue from the sale of regulatory credits totaled $418.6 million, $360.3 million and $302.3 million for the years ended December 31, 2018, 2017 and 2016, respectively. We had no deferred revenue related to sales of automotive regulatory credits as of December 31, 2018 and 2017.

So $418 million out of $21B in total revenue - yeah thinking their CFO probably didn't quit because of this.

Your chart shows him being…

Your chart shows him being an effective offensive player.  Despite his mid-range being off he still went 5 of 11.  You can't discount his ability to get to the rim to get those shots that he made.  I don't think other players can get some of those.   If his mid-range game had been even ok he'd have had a hugely efficient night.  Unfortunately he's pretty hot/cold but still think he's a plus player on offense and elite on defense.

Agree.  Imagine the message…

Agree.  Imagine the message it would send as well.  They would essentially be saying that teams are stupid to schedule marquee non-conference game.  MI would have one loss to an undefeated team (either #1 or #2 in the country) played on the road on top of an undefeated conference championship season.   The message would be - "schedule a Duke, Vandy, or Arizona State" to make sure you don't lose a non-conference game.

That should and probably would end the current system...of course '97 did too so expect it - Michigan destined to blow up the system and get #$%@ed.

The light going on

Matthews' development reminds me of THJ.  Up and down Sophmore year with a light going on near the end.  It seemed THJ was going to turn it over every possession Sophmore year until the second half of the year when he started to click - then he came back Junior year and was the first team All-American with solid handle.

I think THJ's light went on a little earlier as he was 3rd team All Big Ten as a Sophmore, but fairly similiar year to what we are seeing with Charles.

Otto wants a word

Otto Graham may have a legit claim to this as well.

Brent Petway

If ever a player was made to be far far better in NBA jam than actual performance it has to be Brent Petway.  Dunks - 10 out of 10

Fast Break-in

If you ever need a quick break in Dick's has a machine that does it in about 30 minutes.  My daughter's glove crapped out at a tournament and luckily they were able to get her glove in the machine (they originally said overnight) and it came out really soft and she played a few hours later.  A bit expensive but was great.

this

so this

very cool

Nice choices.  I'm a sucker for amps with meters and Marantz makes some great stuff.

Also love Accoustic Research.  Just sold my Dad's  AR-3as as he was downsizing.  It was tough to part with them  as they still sounded great, but I had no room in my system having just bought new Dynaudios, and eventually they will need to be re-foamed which isn't my cup of tea.

The good news was I essentially was able to buy him some sweet used Sonus Faber bookshelfs and an amp for what I sold them for - amazing how much value some vintage audio has held.

Spoon

Your aside about Holger threw me for a minute - thinking - "wait he was in Can, not Spoon" before realizing you were going Spoon-->Can song Spoon-->Can.

Jaki Leibezeit went too.  Such an amazing band.

Player Comparison

MAAR's highlight tape reminds me of D.J. Newbill on Penn State (based on my memory of playing PSU and a quick look at a highlight tape for both players).

Newbill doesn't seem to have elite athleticism or quickness, but is very good at getting into the paint or getting just enough space to get his shot off.  At 17ppg he's a good Big Ten player.  He's more a volume scorer than shooter - his attempts are high and percentage a bit low - but he and Frasier don't have a lot of help on that front.

MAAR looks similar.  In his tapes he finds ways to score despite not elevating very high or appearing to blow by people.  His crossover is good and he seems to shake a lot of people with it.  He also seems to use his body well to get the space he needs.  He's not a great shooter but seems to be adept at scoring around the rim.  If he can improve his shot he could be dangerous.
