Another MMB Alumnus here

Pasquale is very popular among the students (honestly, with no disrespect intended, moreso than Boerma) and everyone I've talked to thinks he is a tremendous choice, myself included.

For anyone interested here's his bio on the MMB website: http://mmb.music.umich.edu/john-pasquale

Of particular relevance to the MMB is his DCI experience: "Dr. Pasquale served as the Associate Brass Caption Manager of the Santa Clara Vangaurd Drum and Bugle Corps from Santa Clara, California, and taught ensemble music as a member of the Brass Staff of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps from Rosemont, Illinois. [...] During his tenure from 2002-2009, the Cavaliers have been named Drum Corps International World Champions three times and the recipient of two Jim Ott Awards for "Excellence in Brass Performance."

Let's see...

Blocked punt; Sack-fumble, recovered for a TD; Interception, returned for a TD; Two additional TFL; Personally scoring over 50% of his team's points.

He's ok, I guess.

20-3 Michigan

20-3 Michigan

He was at Under the Lights

He was at Under the Lights last year and found himself rooting for ND. That's a solid commitment.

/ nm, beaten to it

// Is there a way to delete a superfluous post like this?

Brasky won five Heisman Trophies,

three of 'em as a long snapper.

The Old Kingdom series

is a personal favorite. Start with Sabriel. It has necromancy and plenty of other magic set in a thoroughly fleshed-out (non-earth) world.

I agree

That was the point I was making. I was replying to AAB's post above in which he said, "I think it's unlikely the "best" team would win a 6 game playoff more than half the time." Sorry if that was unclear. I really need to learn how to blockquote.

I would argue

"I think it's unlikely the "best" team would win a 6 game playoff more than half the time"

I would argue that a in a sport like college football (having very few datapoints (games), particularly between the teams actually in contention) a well-designed playoff, like Brian's layout above, would ensure that the playoff champion would be the "best" team by virtue of having won the playoff.

Think about it. Why do we consider Alabama to be a top team? They beat a lot of bad teams, but those wins can only tell us so much. Really their schedule only has three significant datapoints to go by: wins over Penn State and Arkansas and a close loss to LSU. That's it. That's what their ranking is based on. Oklahoma State has four significant games: wins over Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Baylor and a loss to mediocre ISU.

By playing even a short playoff at the end of the schedule, we can potentially double the number of significant datapoints in each teams resume. The tournament winner would add 2-3 more wins over top competition and head-to-head victories over some of its closest competitors.

Could this system still "get it wrong?" I suppose, but I see no way for it to produce anything as egregiously awful as the system already in place.

I'm cautious about both.

MSU and OSU should both have very, very good defenses (especially if Worthy and/or Simon stick around). The offense will be the real question for both teams.

MSU should be very one-dimensional (losing their SR QB and top 4 targets) - How well will they be able to run the ball with everyone keying on it? And OSU loses Herron, Posey, and three good-to-great O-lineman (leaving them in a similar spot to us, depth-wise) - How smoothly will they transition to Meyer's offense? How will Miller progress if the line takes a significant step backwards?

If only Martin and RVB were coming back...

They have some good RBs and return 4/5 of their OL. I expect they'll be pretty one-dimensional, but unless BWC and some other guys really step up, they'll probably still be able to run the ball somewhat effectively. C'mon Mattison, work your magic!

Gibson

Minus all the points

Because

Because pretending Coach Hoke built this season up from nothing is utterly delusional. The fact remains that he inherited 9 starters from a great offense and a (frightfully, painfully) young, but talented defense. Could RR have coached this team to 10-2? I suspect not, simply because the defensive improvement under Mattison was astronomical. But to accept the media narrative that Coach Rod firebombed the program and Coach Hoke single-handedly rescued it in year one is to ignore the reality of the situation.

Eh...

More like zero divided by zero, leading to a l'hopital situation.

MMB alum here

You're a senior. Why are you still listening to assholes on the internet? You should know by now that people will find a way to bitch about the band no matter what. It happens literally every year. And with this show in particular, you had to know going in that it wasn't going to appeal to a large segment of the audience. I, and the people around me, thought it was a fun, if somewhat disjointed show (and a hell of a lot more entertaining than the usual blue-hair targeted stuff). Remember:

I agree to an extent

I agree to an extent, but the good moments outweighed the bad. The good, of course, including all of Carl's lines. "HEY! HE DOESN'T LIKE GEORGE MICHAEL!" "WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!?!?!"

Well-spoken, polite, humble

Well-spoken, polite, humble and charismatic - exactly the kind of player I want representing Michigan. Seriously, when he sincerely apologized for bumping the reporter at the end, I just had to laugh. He reminded me a lot of Countess in the interview posted here: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/mgoblue-blake-countess-interview

If the card stunt

is in the south endzone, and the flyover is going south to north, how will it be visible from the lead jet?

6 and 6...

...that's over .500, right?

In Such A Case...

The Lightning Would Not Technically Be In The Bottle, But Rather Distribute Its Charge Evenly Over The Conductive Surface.

Anyone have a clip of

the play where BWC bowled over their center and wrecked the QB as he threw? I enjoyed that one.

Molk

I'm not confidant about Molk in the NFL. To me, he seems a lot like Raiola - tough and agile, but undersized and not great at getting a push on big DTs.

Leshore & the O-line

Leshore could be a good between-the-tackles guy if they give him a chance to get healthy. IMO, O-line is a much more pressing need.

Backus & Raiola are getting old and Cherilus & Peterman will never be confused with Pro-bowlers. And still, the line is half-decent at pass-pro (except when Backus is 1-on-1 w/ guys like Peppers & Allen - which is unfortunately often). But they get absolutely no push on the run. A good, young LT would let them move Backus to RT where he wouldn't have to deal with speed-rushers. Unfortunately, they're unlikely to find a sure thing picking in the early 20s. However, they could get a top-quality G or C there, if they see one they like.

In remaking this team, Mayock, Lewand, and Schwartz have loaded up talent at the skill positions on offense and the front seven on defense. Adding an improved O-line (and possibly a #1 corner) would push them from "dangerous" to "contender".

Hold on.

There are only suggestive rumors and eyewitness accounts to indicate that Craig James killed five hookers at SMU. Unfortunately, those eyes would have maybe belonged to a certain five hookers that Craig James killed at SMU perhaps.

A few enouraging thoughts from parkinggod highlights

Schofield at LG looked pretty solid run-blocking - 3 or 4 good blocks to open a hole. But in pass-pro, he got beaten easily on Denard's 12-yard scramble.

Great read by TGordon on the screen at 1:42.

Both of Kovacs sacks came on free runs (though he certainly finished both well). Chalk those up to Mattison's blitzes confusing/overloading the RG. To me, the more impressive play was his pass deflection.

Ryan's pressure on the INT looks even more impressive on the replay.

Can't wait to hear Brian's take on the UFR.

One thing to note Brian:

One thing to note, Brian: Auburn's board has a higher resolution than ours will (according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_scoreboards_in_NCAA_colleg…).

I'm not sure how much visual difference there is between 12mm and 16mm pixel pitch at this size, but it's probably not insubstantial. However, we will have two of them to Auburn's one. And no ads. That's a win.

Also, has no one else remarked on the video boards for Yost? I'm pretty damn excited for that.

Spielman

Spielman was my first thought. I'm too young to really remember him as a buckeye, and he was one of my favorite Lions as a kid. He's not a bad broadcaster either.

To echo those above,

To echo those above, I agree completely.

And to echo Brian, I-know-its-over-and-oh-it-never-really-began-but-in-my-heart-it-was-so-real

Rebuttal

"First of all, I feel like most of the stuff you have said is complete and utter horsehsit."

A solid and convincing first point.

I realize the band members do not ultimately decide the music they play, but they are ultimately the ones who play it. Not to take anything away from a spazz such as yourself or other band members, but the boos were directed at the program director."

So you think the band members should have what? Refused to play popular music from a few years ago as a matter of principle? Revolted en masse against the band leadership for having the audacity to plan a show they know some people will not enjoy?

And how are people to know your boos are "directed at the program director"? As the lasrgest and most prominant thing in the stadium during halftime, your boos were almost certainly interpreted as being directed toward the students (which coincidentally, is great reason to not boo, and instead express your criticism of the band's leadership in a more targeted manner, for instance, with an email.)

And ultimately, your ad hominem abuse (spazz) is ultimately childish and irrelevent.

I would also like to add, you do not know me. I am an alum and care about this team very deeply. It really pisses me off to see someone call out my fandom for briefly booing what had to have been the worst half time show I have ever seen at michigan stadium.

This came on the heels of people booing the team at the end of the first half. What do you have to say about that? I assume since you are in the band, you're more okay with that than people booing your shitty halftime show.

Now you were only "briefly booing", saying this intending to soften the harshness of the action. Either you were booing or you weren't. If you're going to defend your actions do so; don't pretend they are something less than they are.

And another point, you proclaim to "care about this team very deeply," while in your next breath defending those who booed them off the field at the half? I believe what you meant to say is, "I care very deeply that

Anyway, thanks for your opinion. I hope it was worth it.

I'm honestly curious what is meant by this. "I hope it was worth it." Are you referring to his expresing of his opinion, or the fact that he took the time to write out a clear and articulate response to your original post, or perhaps that he aided and cooperated in producing "what had to have been the worst half time show [you] have ever seen at michigan stadium"?

In any case, you were clearly attempting to be condescending, despite your utter failure to refute his claims (as documented above), settling instead on juvenile insults and rationalizations for your behavior. You chose to harass and insult college students who spend an absurd amount of their time and energy attempting to improve your gameday experience. Alumni or no, you're damn sure no Michigan Man.

Anyway, thanks for this post. I hope it was worth it.

Kerrigan

Kerrigan played like an absolute madman yesterday. He consistantly tore past our line like they weren't there. Very BG'09. Compare that to Clayborne, who was supposed to be the other monster DE in conference, and his day against us.

I'm sorry to say, I haven't really seen Kerrigan play other than yesterday, but his stats say he's every bit the player we saw. DE isn't a huge need for the Lions, but I'd be perfectly happy if he was their 1st-round pick.

Kinda funny

Whenever Hoke's name is mentioned I always think back to 2007 and the week or so when he was rumored to be a candidate for our HC job. Brian wrote this piece: http://mgoblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/profiles-in-cronyism-brady-hoke.html and I'm pretty sure every fan of the program agreed with him.

Since then, here's what Hoke has done:

2008. 12-2 @ Ball State

2009. 4-8 @ SDSU

2010. 7-3 @ SDSU (through 10 games)

SDSU is likely to finish the season 8-4 and go to its first bowl since 1998. To be clear, I'm not saying I wish we'd gotten him instead of RR. It's just funny how things turned out.

By my count

+14 (10 in the 1st half, including a pair of +3's)

-11 (8 in the 2nd half)

= +3

Same

I then had to explain to my mom who Lloyd Brady was, and that no, that not actually his name, and no, I don't actually know him, and for that matter I don't know any of the people who will care that he was on another national broadcast.

It was funny.

You know, there runneth

You know, there runneth through core... there runneth through core of all Michigan activities both on and off this campus a certain intangible thing. We call it the great Michigan spirit. Maybe you can relate to it if I tell you it's that atmosphere that permeates that stadium out there every Saturday afternoon in the fall, when over a hundred thousand fans patiently wait to see whether Bo Schembechler's going to continue his winning ways.

You know what I mean, you can feel the excitement, the tension, the charisma that surrounds that stadium every Saturday afternoon. Especially... especially, ten to fourteen minutes before kickoff, when a hush settles over that staidum, and we all anxiously wait for that simple four-word command to emenate out of the PA system. I can hear it now. BAND, TAKE THE FIELD! And out of that eastern tunnel pour two hundred and fifteen well-drilled, well-disciplined Michigan bandsmen. They pour over the eastern sideline, they form the big Block M, and they play the greatest college fight song ever written, the Michigan Victors!

That's when the chills go up and down your spine, you get goosepimples all over, your blood turns Maize and Blue, and everybody out there becomes part of the winningest tradition in the history of Big Ten football!

No

but touchdowns were only worth 5 points.

One to Kovacs early.

What was the second?

Seriously

It seems like everyone has forgotten that THE_KNOWLEDGE is an imposter, masquerading as our one true soothsayer and prophet, THE KNOWLEDGE.

Verily, I do miss his Haloscan glory.

Chills. Every time.

WILL IT COUNT!?!? The Bears have scored, but the bands are out on the field! There were flags all over the place. Wait and see what happens—we don't know who won the game! There are flags on the field. We have to see whether or not the flags are against Stanford or Cal. The Bears may have made some illegal laterals. It could be that it won't count. The Bears, believe it or not, took it all the way into the end zone. If the penalty is against Stanford, California would win the game. If it is not, the game is over and Stanford has won.

We've heard no decision yet. Everybody is milling around on the FIELD—AND THE BEARS!! THE BEARS HAVE WON!!! The Bears have won! Oh, my God! The most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heart-rending... exciting, thrilling finish in the history of college football! California has won the Big Game over Stanford! Oh, excuse me for my voice, but I have never, never seen anything like it in the history of I have ever seen any game in my life!

This

I will never forget the feeling of my first pregame. Like no other feeling in the world.

Roh's dreads

would have to extend back from his glorious eyebrows.

You'd think

You'd think Michigan-Secondary-Exodus-Oh-Ten would have put a stop to this kind of talk.

Yes, we could potentially have a good future secondary IF a bunch of talented high-school players committed to Michigan AND they pan-out talentwise, AND they stay healthy, AND they are motivated to work hard enough to help the team.

Yes, it's good news, but if anyone should be able to put this in perspective, it's a Michigan fan this season.

Seriously

I thought it was actually an interesting (albeit counterintuitive) point he was trying to make. Reading the comments, you'd think he was drooling and slamming his head against the keyboard.

Yours is closer to how I see it

1a - Tolzien
1b - Cousins
3 - Pryor
4 - Stanzi
5 - Tate/Denard
6 - Chappell
7 - Marve
8 - Persa
9 - Weber
10 - PSU
11 - Scheelchase

Don't forget

Tshimanga Biakabatuka

Guys I would pick before Moundros:

CGordon, TGordon, Floyd, Turner, Ezeh, Mouton, RVB, Lewan, Hyuge, any of the RB options, Stonum, Hemingway, and Denard.

Well done, Mr. Curtis

Pixar

Absolutely nothing wrong with Pixar (or old-school Disney, for that matter). If you didn't cry during Toy Story 3, you must have a heart of stone.

Holmes on Homes

I love Holmes on Homes and am not at all ashamed to admit it. Guy knows how to build or fix just about anything. And when he doesn't know, he knows enough to hire someone who does. Manliness at its finest.

Is anyone else

honestly stunned how many of these top recruits seem to really like M? Granted, we're Michigan and we should get the best of the best, blah blah blah...

We see the light at the end of the tunnel because we're fans, but frankly I wouldn't expect recruits to see it that way, especially after the last 2 years and the negative recruiting that's assuredly coming with it. In any case, this makes a fast start to this year all the more important.

Just for this season

Just for this season (I wouldn't want to lose Lewan for the long-term). I wish I could find a way to add a CB or maybe LB Greg Jones, but the depth just isn't there on defense.

Offense:

Trade: LT Gabe Carimi for Taylor Lewan

Lose: RB Shaw (Smith), TE Koger (Webb)

Defense:

Trade: SS Tyler Sash for Thomas Gordon

Lose: NT Banks (Campbell), LB Ezeh (Fitzgerald)

Of course

"Of course, we can't actually use the words 'Tate' or 'Denard.' "

Can I ask why? My first thought was recruiting violations, but they're already enrolled and on campus, so...? Is this some other NCAA rule?
