7. "Mike Lantry 33 yard FGA called “No Good” 1974 UM-OSU." Should be 1973.

I was at the game. Close call, Lantry's kick passed over the goal post. He missed the first one slightly. 2nd one was real close. At the game, people were surprised that the ref said he missed. I thought was good. People were more respectful of refs back then. So people didn't react much at the game. Michigan was clearly a better team but Michigan QB Dennis Franklin was injured near the end of the game. Tie game at the end, OSU was voted to go to the Rose Bowl. The vote was a huge controversy.

Just purchased two tickets . . . many thanks for your advice! Go Blue!

Awesome analysis. If Bo had…

Awesome analysis. If Bo had this type of analysis, and adjusted, well maybe . . . hopefully the Michigan defensive brain trust will make adjustments. Love this type of data! Many thanks for the hard work.

I helped tear down the goal…

I helped tear down the goal posts in '69.  Very few expected what happened in '69 and very few expected Michigan's win yesterday. I cried after the game yesterday because I was so happy and it has been so painful to watch the last few years. So happy for the team, Coach Jim and the Wolverine Nation. It's a great feeling.

Now it's time to move on and beat Iowa!

Saw the field hockey final…

Saw the field hockey final. I thought the referee made the incorrect penalty call - which cost Michigan the game. The team played awesome. Congratulations!

What would B10 hockey and…

What would B10 hockey and other major hockey programs do if there was no NCAA?

Looking forward to seeing…

Looking forward to seeing Steelers & Ravens play - then watching Michigan BB & hockey games. It is indeed a great Wednesday. Not worried about switching back and forth between games.

I think the NFL pushed the Steelers game back because the Ravens kept showing positives and the NFL didn't want them other infecting other teams. I'm sure the Ravens will be punished.

Michigan has some exciting young players in hockey and football and an excellent blend of experience and leadership in both women's and men's basketball. Plenty to look forward to over the few months.

Otherwise, I'll just keep working and reading good books.

Thanks for the analysis…

Thanks for the analysis Brian. It is appreciated to have this detail and perspective based on facts. I'm really excited for this young team . . . for next year I guess. Weird about our coaches. I'm still a supportive fan and I chalk up the past two games to coaching brainfreeze or 2020 (whatever is worse).

OK but I'm still excited…

OK but I'm still excited about this young team

Good analysis and…

Good analysis and perspective. Thanks Brian. This gives us all hope.

What a great subject. I love…

What a great subject. I love fiction.

My favorite is Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurty. The west as written by an excellent Texas writer.

Next favorite books Tinker Tailor Soldier SpyThe Honourable Schoolboy and Smiley's People which make up the “Karla Triogy” by John le Carré'. Or the “Asian Saga” of James Clavell, Shogun, Noble House, etc.

Most recent favorite fiction is Where the Crawdads Sing by Della Owens. A young women survives alone in the North Carolina coastal marshes in a murder mystery. I also loved All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr or The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.

Good starting points for future book research:

I have read maybe 30% of these books in the past 50 years. I love a good story that is well written and leads you down a path of dynamic character development. Great suggestions above. I learned some new titles to research.

Is Michigan slow playing him because they see the same thing?

My wife & I are huge…

My wife & I are huge Homeland fans. Plenty of twists and turns over eight seasons. Most of the time, the writing has been good to excellent. Acting is always excellent. We thought the final show was very disappointing at first, then the ending was a cool. We will miss the show. Good spy stories are not easy to find especially if they are current with the times.

Interesting to see what the show runners are going to do next.

The reason I was at the game…

The reason I was at the game is because someone gave my roommate two tickets. The ticket holder didn't want to witness another massacre like the previous year. It was our first Michigan football game. We were sophomores and not caring about football much. Wow, did this game change our minds and our lives!  Our seats were near the field, in the endzone & the end of the game, we rushed out onto the field and helped pull down the goalposts. So exciting. I remember seeing Bo and Jim Mandich being carried by the team. Yea, baby. I didn't miss another game while I was at Michigan. I believe in this team. They are capable of winning "The Game". But let's beat Indiana first.

Did it 30 years ago. It worked. Had some laughs with friends afterwards about how soon we went biking or skiing after the procedure. Ice baby Ice is correct. Everyone reacts a little differently.

I ended up reversing the procedure for a one-time operation to have our fourth. We were blessed, all healthy - all good. Highly recommend it.

Generally agree with mvp and most of the above comments. My daughter spent a semester studying in Florence. We visited her while she was in Florence and our priorities would be:

1.    Tour the Uffizi (best to get a private tour guide)

2.    See David at the Accademia

3.    Walk along the Arno, visit the Ponte Vecchio plus the main Palazzo’s & just walk around town

4.    Take a cooking class (Trip Advisor has a list)

5.    Visit the cathedral and do the Duomo Climb

Enjoy!

Congratulations Pat! Hopefully you have success there.

A leader's job is to protect…

A leader's job is to protect human beings - especially women - title IX. Urban Meyer's job is to be a leader. He needs to know. It's his job to know. That is Brian's point. Then Urban Meyer did not tell the truth to the media when asked.

Root cause

Thanks Brian for explaining the root causes of the offensive line issues in 2017. Communication and execution are fundamental issues for any team sport let alone such a complicated one like football.

Onward, let’s pray that these issues will be addressed in 2018. I have much hope for the team this year but the offensive line is still the biggest question mark.

I like the ca_prophet idea

Brian has convinced me that the NCAA is suppressing athletes for the benefit of NCAA officials, highly paid coaches, networks, etc. So let’s open it up and make it a free market system. Ca_prophet’s idea has merit because of the longer-term medical cost of getting hurt/concussions would place even more value on getting an education + medical coverage being a safety net for those who graduate. Who could prevent such a thing from happening? What if Michigan started providing medical coverage now? Are they allowed to do this?

Best way to start the day . . . with Carl

Carl’s philosophy toward life shines through his voice; clear, confident, soulful, humble and intelligent. We love listening to him in the morning.

The Team! The Team! The Team!

Nov 22, 1969 was my first game. Didn’t care much about football at the time due to my lousy experience with high school football and Michigan’s big loss at Ohio State. My roommates were from Flint and someone gave him tickets because they didn’t want to go to the game and be embarrassed like the previous year. So we paid $10 for the tickets went with his friends. The seats were in the freshman student section, down low in the end zone.

We became more and more excited as the game went along.  When the game finished we rushed onto the field and helped pull the goal posts down. Whoa, what a great first time Michigan football game! I graduated in 1972 then MBA from U of M in 1974. Live on the north shore suburbs of Chicago and I’m a Wolverine for life.

My Aunt was getting her Ph.D in English and Ann Arbor was far enough from my hometown of Pittsburgh to satisfy my needs. I read an article about a young man in 1967 who was a Michigan student who purchased a significant quantity of weed and flew back to Michigan and sold it on campus. That seemed enterprising, interesting, unique and rebellious. I loved the campus and the academics. Didn’t sell any weed but did work for the Daily and worked as a “hasher” (busboy) in a sorority. Exciting times. I remember being at the Daily when the news was coming over the teletype about the Supreme Court ruling about the Pentagon Papers being published by NY Times/Washington Post.  We were very happy about the Freedom of the press in those days too.

So Deontay Anderson is very intelligent

If he understood what was happening after he arrived at Ole Miss and self-imposed a redshirt, then that is self-discipline plus an indication of a higher quality person. Sounds like someone we want.

Why did Deontay Anderson redshirt?

He was a 4 star recruit. Did he get hurt?

Exciting news about all the recruiting.

Great Story

Thanks Adam: Love the depth of this profile of a Wolverine. It is not easy to play any sport in college. This demonstrates how the mental toughness is just as important as the physical capabilities. I better appreciate Patrick as a student and as a player. Love the desire and perseverance. Now let’s go and ruin Wisconsin and Ohio’s seasons!

Love this level of detail

Thanks Adam/MGoBlog. Great to see this level of detail from the players and/or coaches. Interesting and informative.

Looks easy when you see a play well done but from my time of playing/coaching any sport . . . it takes hours/years of practice.

Penguins

Loved watching the Penguins pass the puck. Very exciting to see Carl Hagelin’s speed to chase down the loose puck and slam it into the goal for the clincher. Love to watch the offense in hockey, hate the grabbing by the defense. Make the goals bigger and the rink international sized.

Great Guy

"Family, faith & football" were his priorities. Sounds right to me. Love the family and the team. Sorry for his passing.

Any chance that synchronized skating becomes an Olympic Sport?

Any chance that synchronized skating becomes an Olympic Sport?

It is cool to watch. Your wife have any insight on this? My daughter is competing in this sport.

worth a try

Looks reasonable. Let's see what Delany says to InterM!

Great stuff

Fits nice - long & lean style - looks great. Thanks

great overview

Love the historical perspective.

What's the deal with Patrick Kugler? He was very highly rated coming out of high school. I heard he had a shoulder injury. Is he better and couldn’t he be a contributor in 2017? Or is there too much uncertainty because he has not contributed yet?

Thanks

Thanks Raptor for making this available. Ordered some gear for the cold winter months of biking here in the Chicago area. Do they have Michigan biking helmets?

11 points for Wisconsin?

They might score 9 or 12 points and I have to buy my wife (a Wisconsin alumni) dinner if Wisconsin scores more than 12 points but I predict Wisconsin does not score 11 points. Actually I'll buy my wife dinner no matter who wins. Desert is another matter.

Syracuse Game

The Syracuse game was dominated by Donavan McNabb. Our defense couldn't stop him. My daughter and I attended the game and it was very frustrating because the defense seemed unprepared. The fact that it was Brady's first home game was a bad coincidence. The fans saw Michigan win an exciting Rose Bowl and National Championship in January and had high expectations. Out of left field comes a spread team that Carr/Jim Herrmann did not know how to handle. This was after Michigan lost the opening game of the season on the road against ND. Fans took some frustration out on the offense & Brady but the mistakes may have been wide receiver related. Watching the game live, the fans in the stands were flabbergasted with the Michigan coaches. The article is not correct of course but brings back the controversy of Brady vs. Henson. There is an important lesson here. Sometimes the player without the hype ends up the better player. Brady vs. Henson and how that motivated Brady to improve would have been a better story.

Great subject

My buddy & I once drove over a mountain pass in Colorado just as the storm snow was clearing and we stopped the car and screamed for joy for the beauty of the mountain vista and the excitement of new snow – we were headed to Aspen.

Top of any decent ski slope

Any pristine beach with good surf action - Hawaii has so much beauty

Yosemite – once climbed to the top of Half Dome and saw the sunset

Napoli Coast on the western edge of Kauai

Havasu waterfall at the bottom of the Grand Canyon

Sleeping Bear Dunes

Bermuda, especially after sailing for 10 days in stormy weather

Sistine Chapel ceiling

Michigan stadium at the start of a big game

One of my daughters just visited Machu Picchu and Bali and her pictures looked amazing

Some of the places suggested on the topic above make me want to visit. Greek Islands and New Zealand both sound amazing.

21st Century power – who has it?

“@CoachArtBriles does not exist” should be the byline for an entire issue of MgoBlog. There are many universities where Baylor type problems exist such as Florida State, Tennessee, Oklahoma, etc. The NCAA does not have the will power to bring justice to these situations. Public opinion and the threat of the Feds (Title IX) is wielding power right now.  It makes me sad that we are depending on a few reporters to bring to light these type of situations. There should be better leadership about female equality – in college.

The power of sports and hero/winning worship is not new. Female empowerment is a good thing. Better education, enlightenment and civilization are all good things. Having better education and sports equality for females is relatively new in the history of the world. The USA has been a leader for this. However, seeing the Baylor and Florida State situations is disturbing to me. I love sports especially college football and Michigan football. But my priorities are with women.  I’m male and I have benefited from have strong, educated women in my life – my mother, aunts, cousins, teachers, sisters, wife and daughters. I’m in favor of equality for women.

Art Briles, the football staff and university staff should be roasted for the situation at Baylor. The death penalty would be fine by me. The same should happen at other schools. Maybe people would start to get the point. Women in the 21st Century America (or anywhere) should not be afraid to attend a university or any school. That is more important to me than winning any game or sport. I hope that is true for Michigan.

Thank you Brian for helping to make this point.

Congratulations

Great news. All good names but is there going to be an official “Hello” post?

Healthy babies are a blessing. Congratulations to the Cook family.

Quality

Yes, we come for the depth of quality analysis and stay for the passion (and humor).  Keep up the good work!

Yes, North Allegheny

North Allegheny is located in a northern suburb of Pittsburgh, PA. NA has been powerhouse in football for most of the past decade. #1 HS nationally in 1990, won state championship four times, went to the state finals three times in a row recently winning two. Produced five NFL players. Historically was a pipeline to Penn State. Produced current Wolverine Patrick Kugler who should take over as the starting center in 2016. #1 sports school in PA in terms of state championships in all sports. We were terrible my senior year.
