|3 hours 31 min ago||The first contact drill day,||
The first contact drill day, like 5 or 6 days into camp, Hoke said they were limiting his reps to ease him back in. That's only two weeks ago, so it's probably still the case. Those were his first contact reps since his injury so it makes sense they're being careful with him. Big guys tend to need more time to recover completely from ACLs than fast skill guys.

For us fans maybe, but in general, there's no competitive advantage to being transparent with fans and media.

Do the kicks after safeties count as kickoffs or punts?

Think of it this way, if you're at a bar and Kate Upton happens to start flirting with you because she's pissed at JV and wants to mess with him a bit, is that sad for you? You know you have no chance, she knows it, but a super model flirting with you is still a lot better than not. And unlike you and Kate (no offense), these guys actually do have a shot if they show well in the opportunity they're given. They may not start, but they can make an impression that can move them up the depth chart. Burzinyski did end up in the starting lineup eventually for example. Graham Glasgow and Kovacs also probably got they're first looks on similar motivational moves. They're big boys and understand the situation, but getting an opportunity under suspect pretenses is still getting an opportunity though.

I seem to remember the fact Washington disappeared in the second part of the season was a bit of a mystery. I wonder if this bad showing was part of the reason Jibreel Black at NT became a thing later on.
EDIT: Nevermind, you covered it later on.

Those 4 hours in the stadium to sober up probably is the difference between driving home safe and a DUI or worse for a lot of folks unfortunately. Fights, vandalism, general unruly behavior would all probably get worse.
|1 day 3 hours ago||The nature of college||
The nature of college football is such that coaching transistions are generally costly and take time to reach their potential. We're dealing with a double dose of whiplash right now. It's not something to jump into lightly just because some hot new name is available.
More importantly, I do *not* think Harbaugh would be an upgrade, nor do I think Hoke needs replacing. He's building something special here, I just hope Michigan fans don't Michigan fan their way into a coaching change before it has a chance to come to fruition. Jumping after a guy like Harbaugh would be exhibit 1A of this. You're entitled to your own opinion, obviously..

So what are we betting on again? :p
I guess is what I'm saying is if Magnuson gets bounced from his current guard spot, he will not displace Cole at LT. Either he finds another spot on the line (RT?) or he sits. Cole isn't just keeping the seat warm. The way they've consistently repped him on the first team since spring ball is a pretty clear signal that he's their plan A there, period, regardless of the guard situation. That said, if Cole doesn't work out in an actual game, then all bets are off.

I'm on a bit of a tape delay, but Molk looks fantastic. Showing good quickness on the 3 man pulling play thing to spring two good runs, and also some strength to ride LBs way out of the play on a couple other plays.
|1 day 10 hours ago||It was in the tackle over||
It was in the tackle over stuff, run only, in which case his job is not all that different than what he was doing at guard. I don't recall him ever having to kick slide in pass pro.
|1 day 11 hours ago||I agree with Brian that Cole||
I agree with Brian that Cole at LT is real. Not sure where Mags got work his redshirt year, but with Mags being out in the spring, it's possible Cole has actually gotten more reps at LT than Mags has in his short time at Michigan. Magnuson seems like a pure guard option at this point, or else they'd have him taking a lot more reps out there.

|1 day 15 hours ago||Or maybe he's actually good.||
Or maybe he's actually good. Geez people, I was as down on Miller for his performance last year as anyone, but this isn't last year. You can't on one hand say that it's better to have upper classmen as OL but discount the possibility that a kid actually got better from his RS SO to RS JR years. The guy has been a constant at center since camp started, is it really that hard to believe that he might just have worked hard and improved?
|1 day 16 hours ago||Wouldn't Gardner have to ID||
Wouldn't Gardner have to ID the MIKE to himself in order to check running plays, which IIRC he did fairly regularly. Maybe he didn't really understand it completely from the perspective of how IDing the MIKE would effect blitzes, but it's not like he just didn't understand defensive alignments.
Now, whether he or anyone else had time to do anything when they were getting to the line so late is another issue.

Chesson is one of my favorite players. I love hard nosed receivers that can block. His contributions on special teams is underrated as well, both on coverage and returns. Hopefully he doesn't get lost in the shuffle with some of the new guys coming in and Darboh coming back.

|1 day 17 hours ago||Unfortunately, I think||
Unfortunately, I think Kalis's injury and Glasgow's suspension (and also possible foot/ankle boo boo) complicate things greatly. If they are obviously better than everyone else when healthy and available, I think you can play around a little bit with the guys filling in to make sure you have the best back up in there for the time being with the understanding that things are going to change. I don't think you'd hold out a guy that's clearly better when he's available for the sake of chemistry, but there does probably come a point where it's a tough decision if a guy isn't head and shoulders above his backup.
|1 day 17 hours ago||Very interesting the bit||
Very interesting the bit about the quarterback's handoff technique knocking the RB off his line and away from the A gap. There was a clip in one of the first couple CTK videos where Nuss was coaching Devin up about that, making sure he takes his steps straight back from the snap and into the handoff. I was kind of wondering why it mattered that much, but I guess this is the answer and it makes sense.
|2 days 4 hours ago||He only has two eyes, and||
He only has two eyes, and unless he's really drunk they both point in the same direction. In addition to head coach, he's also a position coach for... drum roll ..... the DL. It's his job during practices and scrimmages to work with the DL and give them feedback after every rep, the same as it is for every position coach, the same as it is for every head coach in the country that also has a position coach responsibility (most of them).
That's what film is for, that's what his assistants and WR coach is for. To be able to see what all 22 guys are doing simultaneously from field level is just impossible, and to make judgements on his coaching chops based on it is assinine.
|2 days 4 hours ago||Right?||
I was off the web all scrimmage since I wanted to focus on watching the scrimmage. I was pretty shocked how negative everyone was being when I finally logged on. I was especially surprised by the reporter types, who I would have expected better from. The 1st unit played markedly differently than the 2nd unit, but there was very little acknowledgement of that fact and it seemed people just generically called the OL performance bad. We didn't look good, but there was clear improvement, IMO. Considering they hadn't yet locked down a starting rotation, and that Kalis and Glasgow both missed all/lots of the scrimmage, I thought the scrimmage was relatively positive.
|2 days 4 hours ago||Suggested Reading||
There's some good discussion among the coaching types here.
Basically, when the offense ID's the "MIKE" it isn't necessarily the same position for the defense (i.e. Jake Ryan). The offense is trying to determine the alignment of the defense and determine it's blocking assignments off of it, the "MIKE" is a common reference point in the center of the formation.
|2 days 4 hours ago||As opposed to the people who||
As opposed to the people who can't stop beating the dead horse even after he's gone? I didn't post the thread, I'd be very happy never talking about the dude ever again, but when people take things so completely out of context and intepret it completely wrong, I guess I feel compelled to give my two cents to try and set the record straight.
|2 days 5 hours ago||I think it's the former, not||
I think it's the former, not the latter. Devin did in fact check runs pretty regularly and successfully based on defensive alignment. It was one of the few things Borges seemed comfortable with him doing (a pretty necessary task really). It's hard to believe that Borges would have him do that without very clear coaching on how and when to make the adjustments, including ID'ing the MIKE among I'm sure many other things.
|2 days 8 hours ago||I think he's saying it wasnt||
I think he's saying it wasnt his job to do it last year, as opposed to be didn't know how. Keep in mind the QB, even under Borges, has tons of things he's responsible for identifying (eg coverages) presnap. This would be one more thing on his plate, which becomes a lot especially considering his late we were routinely getting to the line.
