I live in Indianapolis and…

I live in Indianapolis and have a Star subscription basically because of its Nassar coverage. AFAICT they employ Doyel because he is able to fill proverbial column inches as fast as ChatGPT. His analysis is as robust as the average commenter in a game thread where Michigan won by 7 after being favored by 28.Yes, of course, they should have run the ball on that one 4th and short and thrown the ball on that other 4th and short...

I guess you can't have the occasional Nassar story without the subsidy from junk writers, but it just seems like the paper would be better off selling its space to team propaganda instead.

Yes, but I think two championships is enough to ask WTF the defense was doing on the Kordell Stewart play.

Kentucky has a long history…

Kentucky has a long history of doing this. Basically they want their version of Bear Bryant, another Adolph Rupp. They chased out his successor Joe B. Hall, and they chased out Tubby Smith, even though they both won national championships and both were running competent programs. Actually, they may be worse than Alabama football, since they chased out Rupp in his declining years (the official reason was that Rupp hit a mandatory retirement age, but the idea that the commonwealth couldn't find an exception for its basketball coach is kinda ridiculous).

Yeah. That said, since I don…

Yeah. That said, since I don't know anything about Clark's personal life (and to be clear, I don't care about her personal life), it isn't hard to see a scenario emerge that would turn her into a "controversial" figure.

I don't want to pooh-pooh…

I don't want to pooh-pooh what you're saying, because I feel your pain, but JJ and Denard were awfully good football players. I don't think they're useful here as comps. We're hoping for something like Cade here in overall talent albeit in a different form, which is realistic, but, yeah, not a given from what we've seen and heard.

I am not a Wade fan. I am not a Wade fan. I am not a Wade fan... but as someone here pointed out, Wade's problem as a coach is now standard practice. Strong ass offers are now not just routine but also necessary. I admit I don't know how to process Wade's sins in the old environment (where frankly the NCAA had a habit of Sergeant Schultzing anyway) within the new environment.

Louisville was a pretty good…

Louisville was a pretty good program before Pitino got to Lexington. Crum never figured out how to work with the 3-point line, which always seems weird, because his good teams were built around great wing play. OTOH Pitino adopted the 3-pointer quickly and when he was at Kentucky  he squashed Louisville with it.

Would have to be Edey, wouldn't it? Although Edey probably needs to be doing commercials where he gets confused for a James Bond villain.

I would guess Steve Alford would listen if Warde called. He is not young, he is not the least bit exciting, and he wanders from city to city like a 1970s anti-hero, but he does have 600+ wins.

I feel so bad for Ryan Day. Everybody thinks an 80 year old malevolent leprechaun can kick his ass and he is going to get fired in nine months even though his record at Ohio State will be like 60-6 over the last five years.

A lot of people here are…

A lot of people here are trying to put together a puzzle of what works and what doesn't in Michigan's athletic department. There's some interesting stuff on this front, not least of which was that Harbaugh just put together a three-year national championship run that started when most of the board here thought he should have been canned. If we come at this puzzle with any degree of humility, we recognize that we have a lot to learn.

So we're evaluating whether Warde Manuel is part of the solution or part of the problem. It is a reasonable question to ask, but that evaluation is running into people who just want to bitch, which is tiresome on its own, but particularly so when the complaints are really about future behavior that ends up going how the complainant was hoping it would go.

There's a reason the board adopted the "snowflake protocol" for post game discussion. Get the emotional shit -- which we all experience -- out of our system, and then let's get back to something a little more sophisticated, or at least something with a pretense of sophistication.

They lost 14 games this year…

They lost 14 games this year! Whenever you lose 14 games, you should be on the bubble. This is not a good basketball team.

I used to go to random NCAA tournament games with my dad where we got tickets months in advance. We would hate first round games wjth some random power school with double digit losses up against another random power school with double digit losses. They are boring.

Michigan is a pioneer in the concept of the relief coach. It worked with Fisher and Moore. Not so much with Ellerbe.

The big difference is that…

The big difference is that Williams left OSU on his own and Holtmann was fired because his team sucked. Presumably Diebler played some role in the team sucking. This is a big part of the reason I really didn't care if Howard got fired this week or a month ago, that his interim replacement likely wasn't solving the problem.

Yes, the Frieder Rule is that you don't fricking interview for another job while your current team is fighting for positioning in the NCAA tournament. You do not want a coach who pulls that kind of stuff.

Before we ask this star to make a trek to AA, I want to know what he was doing in November 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down. In certain generations Shaka has a paramount reputation for not handling that kind of activity (walls falling) very well.

The high point of the dual JH-dom was obviously them meeting up at the end of 42-27. That handshake feels a different now, as one of them is about to go on a long, long decline to irrelevance.

It was kinda petty and…

It was kinda petty and asshole-ish but it was also the correct decision. Friedel had a couple of teams with massive talent, and some unimpressive tournament results, and we all wondered what he was doing. It just made sense, of course he was interviewing because he certainly wasn't getting the team ready for Xavier.

If there is one thing that…

If there is one thing that should come from today's news, it's that Warde doesn't have a NY Times-style needle telling the public 'there is an 82% chance I an firing Juwan Howard next week, and a 56% chance I will replace him with Mark Pope.' Nor should there be.

This is all a fair point…

This is all a fair point that I hadn't really thought about. Apparently Howard's buyout is $3 million. That's not a trivial sum, but it's also not Tucker-level money. Or to put it differently, you don't spend $1 million on consultants to worst-case save yourself $3 million.

Or to put in writing what…

Or to put in writing what everyone has understood for a while. The old joke was that you hire consultants to look at your watch and tell you the time.

This makes it sound like Warde wants to fire Juwan but for some reason thinks he needs documentation.

> Instead, argue why the parallels are insufficient.

There is no Blake Corum or Aidan Hutchinson on the team. Nor is there a recruit vaguely comparable to JJ McCarthy telling us (literally) to have faith in the program. I was probably >90th percentile here in expectations for 2021 football because of this. Football is a different sport with large hordes of players, but Howard is going to be out looking for 7th-best players on decent teams that will be the #2 or #3 option for Michigan next season. That stuff doesn't work.

I live in Indianapolis, and went to a Pacers a couple of weeks ago. Suddenly the three Harbaughs are on the giant screen, as they were taking a break from the nearby combine. It made sense for Jim and John to be in Indy at the time, but I guess it says something that they went to an NBA game together and brought their dad along.

Re: JJ's draft status

One of the amazing things about 2023 football is that I think Michigan could have played better than it did. Apparently JJ was hurt, or maybe Harbaugh dialed down the risk tolerance to keep him healthy, I don't know, and the play calling was constrained as a result. I am not arguing with the results, but it is just weird that a team can go 15-0, and I come out thinking the team may have been a bit unlucky.

OTOH the most amazing about the current last place basketball team is that next year probably will be worse. I try to believe that Warde is being positive until he drops the axe later this month, because the consensus view here makes the situation so bleak as to make Warde look like a total idiot.

I don't see how that's…

I don't see how that's possible. How many women's basketball coaches make as much money as their counterpart on the men's team?

Yes, the goodwill he built up was probably the only reason he kept his job after the Wisconsin incident. Seems like that credit should have been exhausted by now. This is the worst MBB team in a long time and there was another incident with Sanderson.
