hands down the most beautiful place on the planet. phenomenol hunting, fishing (fly and deep sea), skiing, hiking, boating, rafting, climbing. alaskans are fun too, generally very helpful. remember one thing about visiting though. locals say 'anchorage, only 1/2 hour away from alaska' in reference to the seedy urban element that lives in anchorage and is so out of place in the beauty and wilderness that is the rest of the state.

saw mich pound IU down in bloomington in the '80's too. nice fans, no problems. it was the first time i heard a fan base yell 'I-U-D' when we had the ball. i giggled like a school kid.
been to evanston to see NW play, but not against michigan. low-key, decent small stadium, and i always root for the cats as long as they aren't playing our wolverines.
now if you want to talk hockey venues, that is a different matter. i will say playing in columbus wasn't that big of a deal, and i will confirm a prior post that i always thought munn (MSU"s arena) had the best ice besides ours.

all of those other titles have centuries worth of background as bloody beserkers, raping, piliging, theiving, and all of that. but we all know that in the context of a sports team, to use the word, for instance, 'knights', is a revered name, a proud name, a name of honor. i have never, ever, heard of the variations of redskins, indians, braves, chiefs, blackhawks in the context of sports used in any other fashion but fun and good spirits, go-team-go fashion.
if you waited most or all of your whole lifetime to protest, and if you didn't also sign the petition to ban these other 'offensive' names like knights and green wave, spare us the self-oppression and the manufactured outrage.

and take your wife for a great meal at the loew's coronado cays resort. we used to live right next door and that was a great place to have a meal right on s.d. bay. you should visit the hotel del coronado, also on coronado island. it is old like the grand hotel in mackinac, right on the beach, and also has great places to eat or have an adult beverage.
if you want a more lively time try pacific beach or possibly la jolla. both the beach life and the night life will be a bit rowdier. great beach too, if you want to hang out there. you can rent boats and even water ski on mission bay - some folks like that. you are a little early for tuna season so no luck on that account. there is also sea world out there which can be fun even for 50-somethings if you've never been to a park like that. oh yeah, the s.d. zoo is world renowned so that is a great place to go too.
hopefully mgobrewmom will chime in since she lives there now.

is that at some point the other guy is disabled. to me that meant they were usually knocked out. we are all able to use reasonable self defense for ourselves or in the defense of others. reasonable self defense includes knocking out our adversary in many such scenarios. no law is broken by being the winner of a fight as long as the force used was reasonable.
and you have a funny picture to be questioning the use of force...

and i played a boatload of football, and for a number of different OC's. i am sympathetic to that micro-second of hesitation if you're uncertain of your line calls. it's just that we couldn't get it done repeatedly on the most basic of bread and butter plays that were nothing fancy, simple iso's, powers, and the like. forget 2nd level blocking, we weren't getting it done on the first level.

|8 weeks 3 days ago||I'll Take a Shot at 'Why'||
while scheme is important, at some point there are only so many ways to run scoop/scrape/trap/cut/pass blocks and it comes down to mano-a-mano. we had two pro tackles on our O-line last year and we couldn't get it done on a painfully regular basis. so we all hope nus does great stuff and our O-line comes light years forward from where it was, but i wouldn't bet the mortgage on it just yet. without an O-line it would be hard to predict much sustained success against good teams.

is that there are some sports and leagues that are easier to like than others. you don't have the equivalent of 'maize rage' or the 'cameron crazies' at a run-of-the-mill pistons v. bucks game. instead you have piped in music trying to get people to make some 'noise' and 1/2 of the stadium is empty. we can all appreciate the skill and competence of the pros, but that is not a game that is going to garner much excitement, especially with anyone outside of their respective geographic area.

time is precious and while i like the occasional diversion like anyone, t.v. is a time-sucker and there are many, many things to fill those time slots that are more worthwhile. even when we have it, we only watch a bit of college football on saturday's and about a quarter of the lions game (can't tolerate more than that), never a day's worth.
living in socal there are plenty of activities we used to engage in that were fun and didn't involve the box.

that you get to play the game the longer you play. i didn't contemplate that i would be playing football, much less in front of somewhere between 3K-20K people, on television, at that point in my life. i was also the benefactor of an OC who was a wizard who had played QB at wyoming and was a champ. i played TE/H-back and that was a feature position in his offense. and as strange as it may sound to sane people, i love to run block probably as much as i like catching the ball.
combine that with the comaraderie of playing with guys who you risk your lives for in your regular job, and short of the military it would be tougher to have a tighter bond with guys than that.
|10 weeks 16 hours ago||NPSFL - Cops/Firemen||
most of our starters had played pro or major college ball, as had the starters from the teams we played like NYPD, LAPD, LA Fire, Miami, Phoenix and others. the games were played to raise money for various charities, many hundreds of thousands raised n that time. we played all over the country and got to play in some very cool stadiums like the coliseum and jack murphy (now 'qualcomm'). the rest of the details are some decent stories over a beer, but i won't clutter up the blog with them.
this was all after hockey at mich. incidentally, the only time i ever got knocked out was playing for the jr. wings against the windsor spitfires in the old windor arena. diving/sliding to stop a guy's break away attempt back in the days when the nets were pegged into the ice with 10" pegs. next thing i remember was waking up staring up at the lights, tucked way in the back of the net, with both coaches asking me if i was alright.

closest we ever got to getting in trouble was one time i took a test for one of the guys and as i was handing it in i got asked for my i.d. - to which i replied, didn't bring it, not going to the bar but a test, and i walked out. the real trouble came when my buddy choked and not only handed a test in, but handed it with MY name, albeit spelled wrong. i get a call the next a.m. and have no idea what they're talking about and leave town - but not before administering an a*& whipping to my idiot teammate.
