Prime example, still ended up getting picked in Round 2. Interesting Wikipedia fact - somebody must be a hater: at the time of the NFL combine, had 4 children by 3 different women. |
| 1 year 10 weeks ago | Being in Minneapolis |
I do have a slight bias towards seeing us get the 1-seed at the XCel Center, but I do hate that it would likely entail a 2nd round matchup with the Gophers. For those who thought Duluth had a home crowd advantage at last year's final (basis my seats / angle, I'd estimate 85-90% of fans behind them), you'll know that we do not want to face ANY MN team in a one-game playoff in this state. Lame as it may be, I guess I'd prefer a boring couple of games with no significant home ice advantage in Green Bay followed by a couple more "boring" no-home-ice games in Tampa... and I'd hope to be at all of them, myself. |
| 1 year 11 weeks ago | At least... |
I was just listening on the radio stream rather than actually watching. Easier to be detached from a frustrating night of hockey. Unfortunately, as Brian has pointed out, that's the way this team is this year. Let's just hope they find that fire again down the stretch... |
| 1 year 21 weeks ago | Formatting Changes Affecting the knowledge's style... |
And the "new" mgoformatting is a real drag on THE_KNOWLEDGE's approach to posting. The default 1.5 spacing after an enter really changes the dynamic that used to be presented by the period-filled spaces. Anyone else remember when using the spacebar after hitting enter, then hitting enter again was the only way to have a gap between paragraphs? Undoubtedly the current system is far superior to the older 99.9% of the time, but I believe that THE_KNOWLEDGE should have access to the old formatting system. |

I'll always be hoping he finds success at Arizona. Would have been great if he'd succeeded more quickly here, but best of luck to him at AZ. Glad it isn't a usual opponent for us, because I know he'll be successful again, though I guess baggage in the Big East and Big 10 country would have probably been too much for a team to gamble on him (and still be worth the career risk to him given program quality) in those parts of the country. |
| 1 year 27 weeks ago | Having him on the field this |
Having him on the field this weekend or any other would have been such a disaster - protestors, supporters conflicting, etc, etc. Would not have been an okay situation. | 1 year 33 weeks ago | Real Schedule Next Year |
Bama at a neutral site + ND away (not to mention Nebraska & OSU) = taking a bit of a sleeper on other non-conference games. It is what it is and it hurts for season ticket holders, but if we booked another big-time opponent, we could be staring at an ugly year 2 for Hoke that has more to do with scheduling than the quality of the team we field. 9-game conference schedules can't come quickly enough to readjust this home/away balance situation... |

I was clearly a little mixed up in my analysis there... thanks for adding to the clarification. |
| 1 year 36 weeks ago | Thanks |
Thanks for clarification. My interpretation was obviously a bit jumbled there, so I derp'd on the Schofield comparison (just have him as a tackle in my mind despite the formation notation & reality of the game ahead of UFR). Seems like the real driver will be direction of play calls, which should rightly inflate the scores of the stronger members of the line. |
| 1 year 36 weeks ago | OL +/- Between Positions |
New(ish?) rating system seems to favor OTs over OG / C, no? Is there anything that could equilibrate? Or were Western's DTs that much better than DEs/LBs the OTs were dealing with? Know that Molk has had some more positive days for his reach blocking abilities in the past, but if that isn't a part of the system any longer, it seems like it will be tough for interior O-linemen to grab high scores. They also might be more prone to taking negatives given the nature of their positions & potentially increased complexity of interior DL/LB interaction? I'm probably reading too much into too little, but maybe we could figure out a way to equilibrate expectations in terms of magnitude of scores for different OL positions like is typically noted between some of the defensive spots. Could it be that a +2 is as good a day for an interior lineman as a +6/7 is for an OT? Just throwing it out there. (Or maybe I missed the explanation, and if so, my apologies.)
DISCLAIMER: I do not mean to imply in any way that I am unimpressed with the awesomeness of Lewan's donkey-stomping abilities, just not sure that Schofield merited that much higher of a score than the interior guys. |

| 1 year 41 weeks ago | Rankings Meh |
Recruiting a FB is a bit of a crapshoot from a rankings perspective - if the coaches believe in the kid, I don't really care about how the recruiting sites view him. Of course, if a school like Michigan is willing to offer a guy a scholarship at FB, he must be a reasonably good prospect, so it makes sense that the sites re-evaluate, but it is tough for me to get excited one way or another. |

which is why we just call it Michigan, and call it a day. End of story. If "this is Michigan" wasn't used in recruiting and positioning the program, something would be wrong. Not to pour salt on a wound, but it sounds a lot better than "our helmet's got wings."
This. Is. Michigan. |

I just think the timing is the biggest issue in this case, especially if the "ordered new pads w this in mind months ago and only told the coaches today" story is correct. Same issue. Don't know WTF us up but thought it might be my system. Maybe something that will be updated / fixed? As of right now it borderline ruins the game. |
| 1 year 43 weeks ago | Has anyone done a similar update for PS3? |
I hadn't bought the game in a few years and just downloaded one of the generic roster files (gamingtailgate, I belive), but it obviously didn't have the UM upgrades. Tried to do a few myself, but didn't have the patience because that feature of the game seems really choppy for some reason. Maybe my system is getting old or something. Anyhow, any updated Michigan rosters for PS3 would be appreciated! |

Used to be able to justify the 2 dvd plan pretty easily given value relative to renting movies / theater / alternatives. Now, since I don't use it that month, another 50% premium doesn't seem merited, nor does DVD-only or online-only appeal to my needs. Tempted to drop it for a while just to see if/how it matters. Seems too easy to cling to something like Netflix when you probably wouldn't even realize if it was gone and now would save $200-$300/yr. |

I'm much more excited for practice to start this year than in just about any I can remember. One thing is for sure... it will be interesting to watch it all unfold! |

... about the next few incoming classes. I really feel like some guys will step it up and we'll figure out a way to get it done. Red somehow always gets them to play. Adding a true star to the mix would obviously be a plus, though, of course. The only reason I'd be worried about the tournament streak coming to an end in the somewhat near future would be if MN and WI (and MSU, though less likely at this point) come back to dominance while we schedule tough OOC games and don't perform well in that part of the schedule. My main question is whether Pearson is the unofficial "coach in waiting" or if his (fully warranted) dabbling with Tech signals that there might be something else in the cards for when Red steps down. Will be interesting to see... |

Section 122 - tough to hear the band (they are behind / above), and not with the rest of the Michigan fans, but being in the middle of a sea of opposing fans can be fun too! Michigan fans are in 118/119, I believe for the most part, with the band up in 226. |

Did happen at one point early in the game. Drew some of the few smirks from the NoDak fans sitting near me for the game (I wasn't with the students) - aside from a couple of guys who got unnecessarily defensive. [One of those guys also delivered a death threat to me for cheering for Michigan and openly questioned early in the game whether Michigan knew how to play hockey - to me, though, this was the exception for their fans, since most seemed pretty reasonable.] |

Last year, I spearheaded a group of guys at the office bidding on a charity auction to have a few higher-ups take us out to a sarcastically titled "sales-style lunch" to drink beer and watch BBall on the first Friday of the tourney. Forgot about it until a couple of weeks ago, and couldn't have worked out better. I'll be arriving at the bar just in time for our game to eat and drink on the execs' tab (and feel good about it because my contribution went to charity - and is long forgotten by my bank account!). Can't wait... GO BLUE! |

This team outperformed expectations (albeit in a different way than was expected), and it is too bad to only win the awards that are essentially undeniable. Also wish these guys would get a little more respect from our Michigan fan base! This has been a strangely really good season, and I hope these guys can piece together a nice tourney run (not least of which because I'm in Minneapolis and would love to see them in the F4!). |

Should mean that he can't recruit or spend any time with the team or anyone associated with the team until he returns... Until that's the case, the fact that he's not on the field with them for 3 hours of the week (and who knows, maybe he'll be calling in to talk to the coordinators) means that a suspension is MEANINGLESS. |

Less leverage with cable operators to secure a high price / maximal distribution. The economics are pretty complex in terms of how different types of audiences are valued & what a station is bringing to the table - and cable operators are powerful. If it were a regional-only access issue, they'd have to have a complex Zip Code / IP identification system like the MLB does for its mlb.tv subscriptions (a great service by the way for out of market MLB fans) - but man, does that suck when you're actually IN the home market and don't have the channel playing your games on cable. I have a feeling that in a few years, there will be a pretty massive shakeup to the model and we'll look back and wonder what we were thinking, but for today, there are economic reasons for not streaming every game. |
| 2 years 9 weeks ago | DU |
Seems like the biggest issue here to me. We really need them to win tonight since they got the win last night. I find it ironic that their winning tonight will actually probably put them ahead of us in RPI, but shoot themselves in the foot on TUC. Would be nice to get the Merrimack comparison back if Maine wins and flips the TUC comparison back, but it seems to me that we just need to keep DU at bay. |

Picked up 4 varieties on the liquor store stop on the way home: Furious Bender Coffee Bender Abrasive Ale
All are excellent, and if you haven't tried Surly, I recommend getting to the upper midwest to give it a shot. They have some amazing seasonal varietals - one called "Wet" that is among my favorite beers ever. And Coffee Bender is a totally different + amazing beer drinking experience.
Later... maybe some Jim Beam if the mood hits me right depending on where I'm at. Grew up in Kentucky / Cincinnati area before going to Michigan, and while it isn't the trendiest bourbon, it is always more than sufficient for me. |

Continued hockey posts despite their relative lack of popularity / demand make Brian my idol (even more than he otherwise would be). Think this team is at an inflection point - they seem like they have what it takes to make a run (esp when Hogan returns), but it could go either way. Let's hope we stay aggressive early in games, because getting down is what really drains the energy from the team (though the comebacks recently have made me more hopeful.. if a little too much so). |

Has to be contingent on DB (and LC if involved) being 100% certain that Les will clean up his act. Question is whether or not that actually hamstrings his recruiting/coaching ability for us. Whether the hire is Miles or someone else, we need to unite the fan base and be supportive of the program. We know it matters to recruits, and I believe it can affect the current players as well.

Becuase before the Hummer after finishing his senior year, he was driving a crappy old silver Monte Carlo, and I was sort of surprised someone hadn't upped his ride at least a little bit. |

Think this isn't a great thing for the Big 10. While all of the New Years day exposure is great, having all games at once means that fans who would normally just check in to see what was going on in another game if it were another day / time (I know I would for those other games) will no longer do so. Probably not a problem for teams with large, dedicated fanbases - but the teams with smaller bases probably generally benefit more from a "halo effect" of other Big 10 fans that they'll no longer get. I'd vote for trying to stagger the games somehow if possible in the future. |

If Harbaugh is already a "done deal," I don't think DB would be sticking to his guns so hard about waiting until after the entire season is complete to make his performance evaluation. I work at a big company, and if the CEO said something like that, but then after the fact it came to light / became clear that his mind had already been made up but he deceived folks about it, there would be a shit storm. As a former corporate executive, I don't think DB would put his credibility on the line by insisting that he hasn't made a final decision when he has. Personally, I want to believe that Harbaugh is indeed a done deal, and I don't think that Brandon will fire RR unless he has that side of things locked up, but publicly insisting that it is not done isn't a tenable position if it really is done... |

Without this class's crown jewel, it becomes a little easier decision for DB. Maybe not a lot, but the scale leans a tiny bit more in that direction... Sucks for RR that this has all been breaking during the Bust so he couldn't really take any action. |

As an out-of-stater, I'm glad that we'll be on BTN for Friday night's game. I was traveling during the MN game this weekend, and really enjoy the radio feed for most games anyway, but the feed has been a bit more grainy than usual this year, so I'm looking forward to seeing one on the tube. I also get the Fox Sports College channels specifically so that I can catch most of the games that are on FSD. Always ends up being weighted towards a lot of games in the back-half of the season, but I'm fine with that. I think we'll be alright this weekend against OSU as long as we can find a way to break the Friday night streak of lackluster play on both ends of the ice. WRT The Big Chill - hopefully our guys will come in pumped up, because I'm sure State will be - in this game, the teams always play up regardless of records. Would be a great opportunity for us to make a statement with a lot of people watching... |

It is up, though the quality seems markedly worse than usual (breaking up rather than just sounding like a radio feed - sounds like they've got some kind of a filter on so that you can't easily hear the crowd noise, etc. Lame.). |

I grew up in Cincinnati before going to UM (2 brothers are also Michigan alums). When we visit home and happen to be wearing any Michigan gear around, it is impossible to avoid being heckled. Comes with the territory, and we expect it. Because OSU has been the only relevant program in Ohio for so long, they've taken over the entire state as their fan base (and rightly so), but it was pretty funny to see the number of OSU fans that became "huge" UC football fans as well once that program started turning things around... |

sums up quite a few things for us this season. I'm as disappointed as anyone, but all is not lost. Let's rally and cheer these guys on for the next 4 Saturdays (and hopefully one in bowl season). For me, even with as tough as the last several years have been, Michigan football season is still my favorite time of year, and we only get 12/13 days a year to enjoy it. I say we make the most of the rest of the season and move on from there and hope for bigger and better next year. We knew it could be a challenge, and it has been in more ways than most of us hoped or seriously believed, but the world is not coming to an end and the boys will take the field again in 6 days. I'll still be cheering for them as fiercely as anyone. |

Could be the best solution for both sides. Not like we wouldn't be able to field a defense next week without him. |

I, too, saw the bye week over the summer and pounced on it for a weekend with the girlfriend. Great minds think alike... though she did ask earlier this week if we had to watch any games. I was tempted since she gave me an opening, but I think I'll just let her have this one given what OSU weekend is now going to do to "The Weekend Formerly Known as Thanksgiving Weekend." |

| 2 years 34 weeks ago | My Useless Opinion |
Watched the replay over and over, and I concur that it is on both Cam and Rogers. As pointed out, Rogers bites up immediately, and could have been more useful had he maintained some amount of deep leverage. However, it seems to me that Cam didn't even see the outside receiver releasing deep and read only off of the 2. He assumed that it was an overthrown ball to the 2, leading him to believe that he would either pick it off or it would fall meaninglessly deep / towards the sideline. Had he played the deeper of the two vertical routes, neither likely results in the TD (though they definitely pick up the first on the throw to the 2 and who knows what happens on the 1 depending on how the coverage plays out). Nicely drawn up by BK, but my take is that if both stay deeper, the result is better for UM. That said, those guys needed to be aware in run support and you can't just drop the whole secondary deep on every play. Given the rollout, though, I'd prefer that they cover deep and rely on the LBs to get wide to prevent the underneath stuff. Annndddd looking at it ONE MORE TIME, I'm thinking that Thomas Gordon could have done a better job getting over to cover the 2 (looks like it could have been a 3-level zone, if it was an obvious roll-out, which is why Rogers might not be wrong biting up) - which would have allowed Cam to stay deep. At the end of the day... just tough to tell, but I'd say we had a bit of a breakdown on that entire side of the defense, leading me to believe that we just need to spend some more time preparing for combo routes on rollouts designed to beat 2-deep zones. If this went to Kovacs' side, I'm not sure that there is anything more positive that would have happened for us either. |

Thanks for the continued efforts to educate our fan base! |

| 2 years 38 weeks ago | I've got the Platinum Skymiles Card |
Worth it if you like stacking up the MQMs depending on what level of status you've achieved & how much you spend on the card annually. Having a credit card that can push you over to gold or platinum flyer status is worth it to me because of the benefits associated with that - namely increased likelihood of first class upgrades. Also, I really like the travel companion benefits + access to AmEx's other customer service elements. However, if you just care about racking up miles in general, gold is a great option. |
| 2 years 38 weeks ago | De-Winged Helmets |
This has probably been covered, but on the BTN Michigan coverage, he was the only other guy that I spotted at that practice (aside from Tate) who was de-winged. (Didn't look bad in the clips they showed, either, IMO.) If the de-winging is going to be used to single out just a couple of guys (assuming Turner would have been the 3rd...), I am resolutely opposed. I get the need for motivational tactics, and I think it could be a good one - but don't use it to put guys down. Maybe do it to all incoming freshmen and a handful of other guys (at least 5 or so) such that those that have it aren't getting singled out. When motivational tactics turn into demotivation and transfers, something is wrong. Nice idea, but let's try another iteration... |

Not a lot of time to get what I assume are some pretty complicated acoustics right if they do indeed decide to mic the band up. Would love to see it so that everyone can enjoy the band (and potentially a bit less RAWK music), but it might be a little tricky setting it up so that there aren't strange echoes going on that hurt the quality of what you hear. Luckily, I'm assuming we've got some pretty smart folks ready to work on it! |

Not sure I remember it, but I do remember being a part of a group of students trying to make the gesture into more of a fist during that timeframe. We called it "the hammer" - as in our Defense bringing down the hammer. Then the Daily stepped in and started promoting the claw and it was over. And hammer supporters were sad. I, too, am anti "you-suck" - but would support something a little more creative in there. |

Hasn't offered yet, but will be a strong contender (maybe even the instant leader) if they do. I went to St. X and we send a few dozen guys to ND every year - sort of a pipeline up there. (I was one of only two to go to Michigan in my class.) From a football perspective, ND has been hitting the Cincinnati Greater Catholic League South (4 big all male Catholic schools) pretty heavily for a while now. Additionally, Tom O'Brien (formerly BC coach, now at NC St.) is an alumnus and a good number of St. X guys have been going to BC as well in recent years. Will be interesting to see how his recruitment plays out - hope we land him. |
