I thought the whole running…

I thought the whole running up the score bit was overplayed.  Beyond the bomb to Tarik, which was more of a feel good/welcome back type play call, we essentially just pounded the ball for the most part and stuck with the gameplan.  If PSU could stop the run or disallow UM from completely owning the clock, then no controversy around this.  It was just domination and PSU had no answers.  Don Brown wanting the shutout was CLEARLY not overplayed, however.

One thing that I thought escaped comment was reinserting a clearly (re)hobbled McSorley into the game in the 4th for meaningless snaps.  While the kid is a competitor, I really felt it was outrageous and a total Hokean lapse in judgement not to say some version of, “We appreciate you, we love you, you are sitting the remainder of the game.”  The power differential was on full display there, a kid on scholarship desperately wanting to play in contrast to a coach with a multimillion dollar contract trying to save face by not being totally blown out (which at that point in the game was a complete inevitability anyway) and not placing the onus on player safety.  Not to turn everything into an indictment on amateurism, but the optics of that reeked of poor judgement by Coach Franklin at the very least and both the best (McSorley’s grit and competitiveness) and worst (Frames Janklin seemingly placing self-interest above the well-being of his player) college football has to offer.

This.  No doubt McGregor is

This.  No doubt McGregor is very well conditioned for 5x5 minute rounds, but this will be 12 at 3.  While you may not think a difference of 11 minutes would make that much of a difference, you have to consider that the whole flow of the fight is completely different.  Guys that have boxed since they were children get exposed as having stamina issues as they move through the normal progression of amateur and professional boxing bout length - amateur at 3 rounds, 6, 8, 10, 12 in the pros.  Don't be surprised to see him slow at the midway point of the fight.

Beyond that, you are talking about one of the most skilled defensive fighters of this generation.  Mayweather opponents in his career land something like 16% of their punches against him.  Pacquiao, shoulder injury or not, is one of the most gifted offensive fighters of recent years and perhaps ever.  He landed at 13%.  Frankly the over under should be on how many punches McGregor lands, most guys don’t go double digits on Mayweather in any round and these are fighters who have trained specifically to box almost their entire life.  It wouldnt surprise my to see the Notorious land an average of 5.

I was trying to think of an apt sports analogy as I think the rationale for most people giving McGregor a chance is the striking element of his MMA fighting - which is known to be good comparatively to other MMA fighters.  The best I could come up with is a top level cricketer trying to hit a fastball off Clayton Kershaw or something.  No doubt the cricketer possesses amazing hand eye coordination in a similar sport, but he is lucky to even sniff contact against the best in a discipline that he has not dedicated his entire life to mastering. Part of me thinks the most likely outcome is McGregor getting so frustrated that he goes rogue and gets DQ’ed.

Thank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you.  The guitar solo on "Waves of Fear" perfectly captures the spirit of the song and is as inventive as it is unconventional - truly a spirited, artful guitarist.  All of the (albeit limited) Richard Hell catalog wth Quine is incredible, as are most all of his other collaborations.

Religious reader of MGoBlog, almost never post but felt compelled to do so when I saw this - Tom Waits recognized how talented Quine was, yet somehow he has slipped through the cracks as far as known, influential guitarists go.

McGary

I really got a kick out of one of the announcers recounting how Mitch used to deliver his middle school paper route on a unicycle.

All Name Team

Need to add Gopher recruit Isaac Hayes to the list, his uniform is rumored to be simply a black leather trench coat and sunglasses.

Socks

Too funny, I googled Twins City Socks the day after finishing the book to see where I could buy some also!

Agreed

Hate to be preachy, but I just got done reading the grand jury report.  It is literally horrific.  Thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims and their families.  Discussing the recruiting implications of this terrible tragedy seems to be in poor taste at this time...

Joppru

My older brother was in Bennie's class in High School.  There was a game where he broke a rib and punctured one of his lungs.  He still scored two TDs, but had to come off the field after pretty much every play to take oxygen.  Guy was a complete beast, too bad it didn't work out for him in the league, but he sure was great as a Minnetonka Skipper and in the Maize and Blue!

Eskridge has gone the way of young Tate Forcier...
