Back when Harbaugh came in…

Back when Harbaugh came in 2015 and brought Durkin with him, thereby demoting Mattison to DL Coach, I started a thread here about how it was a surprising move, and it looked like they were trying to marginalize Mattison's influence on the defense. I received dozens of downvotes, was flamed, and the thread was subsequently locked. Well, perhaps he has felt marginalized during the Harbaugh regime after all.

Say what you will, but Mattison could have gotten a job anywhere. He certainly sent a message to Harbaugh with this move.

Harbaugh is 1-5 against Meyer

Harbaugh is 1-5 against Meyer and Dantonio. He is the 2nd coach in Michigan history to go 0-3 against Ohio. I understand that Ohio was coming off a huge season his first year, but Meyer took over a 6-6 team that was coming off a loss to Hoke.

This team did not win a game against a school that was over .500 this year. I'm just very disappointed right now. Harbaugh makes as much money as any coach in the country, but the results have not justified it thus far. I know that he is a good coach, but he has been outcoached consistently in close games against quality opponents. The tide needs to turn.

What can you say? You can't

What can you say? You can't always win them all, and they got caught tonight. It was a tough loss to take, but nothing has really changed. Beat Indiana, beat Ohio and they're in the Big Ten Championship game. Have the tiebreaker on Penn St obviously. The same things they would have had to do to get to the playoff had they won tonight. They may fall out of the top 4 in the CFP rankings this week, but as long as they take care of business from here on out, nothing has changed.

Interesting. Like Bo

Interesting. Like Bo Schembechler, Carm Cozza played for Woody Hayes at Miami University and is a member of their "Cradle of Coaches."

The real winner in the deal

The real winner in the deal is Nike. They're basically the bookie. They get the exclusive jersey rights to both schools for over a decade. It's the equivalent of an arms dealer selling to 2 countries at war with one another. Well played, Nike.

That was the impression I got

That was the impression I got as well. There was a lot of talk about Tomsula cozying up to York and angling for the HC job last year. I think Jim felt stabbed in the back by him, and now that Tomsula has gotten the axe, he feels a sense of justice (or Schaudenfreude depending on how you look at it).

Right. And they also said

Right. And they also said that there was no way Jim Harbaugh would leave the NFL to come to Michigan. ESPN's "journalists" have a dubious track record to say the least.

Why on Earth would you bring

Why on Earth would you bring in Jack Harbaugh as a consultant?! Because his sons have had NFL coaching success? He has never coached or held any NFL job in his career. That move would make absolutely no sense at all. And trading Stafford would be a horrible decision. Thank God they aren't "handing you the job tomorrow."

Great win to finish the

Great win to finish the season. The defense made huge plays in critical situations, and Stafford was smart with the football and put up huge numbers again. Megatron was a stud today, and really only missed one ball and was under tight coverage at the time. I hope they figure out his contract in the offseason.

All things considered, I'm happy that they finished the season strong. 7-9 should have been 9-7 of course, had the refs not stolen 2 games from them, but crap happens. Heck, had the refs not stolen the Seahawks game, they'd have the wildcard tiebreaker over them now. Shoulda, woulda, coulda, sigh.

I hope Caldwell gets to stay. I don't necessarily think he's a great coach, but the players like him, and they have been playing hard for him. And that is important. Stability in the coaching ranks is underrated in the NFL. So many teams shuffle through coaches, but the teams that have kept the same HC for many seasons have had success. Caldwell deserves a chance. 2 seasons is a lousy barometer, and his overall record is a winning one (18-14, 0-1 playoffs). Bringing in a 3rd coach in 4 years would be an unnecessary gamble at this time.

I wish we could play Florida

I wish we could play Florida in every bowl game. The 08 Citrus (Capitol One at the time) and the 03 Outback were nice wins, but this year's is a beatdown.

Aside from a new shirt, someone gave me John U. Bacon's latest book 'Endzone.' I'm really looking forward to reading it.

Local affiliates of networks

Local affiliates of networks make the deals with cable providers, not the national network. In West Michigan, our ABC affiliate just renegotiated a deal with Dish last year. I'm not sure where the OP is from, but his local ABC affiliate is negotiating with dish, not the entire network as a whole, so most of you have nothing to worry about.

I got this one as a kid for

I got this one as a kid for Christmas back in '91 shortly after the game. My uncle was a photographer for the Toledo Blade, and he got me the photo and my cousin was a UM student who happened to have a class with Desmond, and he had him personalize it for me. I've kept it with me ever since, and it now has a prominent place on my man cave wall.

OP, when you live in

OP, when you live in Michigan, the Sparty rivalry is a year-round thing that is always around you no matter what. The state is divided, so to speak. Perhaps other parts of the state are different, but I live in the GR area, and in my neighborhood there are multiple UM flags and multiple State flags flying each gameday. The week of the big game, it's not uncommon to hear sporadic chants break out in public. For instance, at Meijer last year (which is always busy) the Friday before the game, various "go green go white" chants would break out in the store only for the inevitable "can't read can't write" chants to follow.

It's just a more intense rivalry in the state of Michigan as there are equal numbers of UM and State fans in close quarters all the time. Traffic at the Big House for that game is always 10 times worse than any other game during the season as well.

The Ohio game is certainly a big rivalry game, but Ohio fans don't live here, so it's not like we have to deal with them all the time. That's why that game is not as big of a deal to many of us. Don't get me wrong, Ohio is a hated rival and that game is a big deal to us, but the State rivalry is just a year-round hate that we residents (at least in West Michigan) deal with all the time.

I wondered how Stanford got

I wondered how Stanford got ahead of Northwestern. The committee said that head to head matchups were going to be key to their rankings. But I think they just look at the AP and Coach's poll and go from there.

I'm confident that Harbaugh's

I'm confident that Harbaugh's next few seasons will surpass those of Hoke's, and I hope that he will stay for a while. I just don't like how quickly everyone has forgotten about how great of a first season Hoke had (you can paint it however you'd like, but it was easily our best season since 03). And who's to say that the team wouldn't have improved over the long term under him. Harbaugh is certainly a more accomplished coach than Hoke, but I just don't like how quickly UM went through their last two coaches. Neither Rodriguez nor Hoke really had a fair shake to prove what they could do. And this negative thread piling on him is in poor taste.

He had some academic issues, and I don't think his old high school coach was a very good influence on him. They were still very much in touch and the coach was saying a lot of negative things about the university in the media. I don't remember the details, it's been a while, but a google search should satisfy any curiosity you have.

Seth, in your OP you mention

Seth, in your OP you mention that you don't want to shell out the donation to get priority from the University for season tickets. That's totally understandable. I actually stopped doing that a few years ago, and now I buy my season tix off of ebay or craigslist before each season begins. It's a great way to save a lot of money as well as time and worry about finding tickets every week. Just my two cents.

If Ruddock isn't a game

If Ruddock isn't a game manager then I don't know what that term means. "He's a good leader and he completes a lot of passes." Yeah, bubble screens and 10 yard outs and slants. He can't complete anything deeper than that with any consistency at all. I'd like to see the exact numbers, but his accuracy beyond the 10 yard range has to be abysmal. Fortunately, he seems to have stymied the turnover problem at this point, so with Rudock managing the games and not doing anything stupid, we have been able to rely on the defense to win games. The formula has been working great so far. God help us if we need Rudock's arm to win a game though.

While it was nice of

While it was nice of Northwestern to send their field hockey team to the Big House last Saturday, State will surely pose a more serious threat this weekend. However, they're a run first team with an ailing offensive line which tips the scales into our favor.

Agreed that getting the run game going will be important for success, but also, the fact that there are 3 legit tight ends (Butt, Bunting and now Williams) who can catch the ball is a huge boon for the offense considering Ruddock's painful limitation when it comes to throwing the ball further than 10 yards with any semblance of accuracy. Those big TEs should prove essential in opening up the intermediate passing game this Saturday. I feel confident about our chances, cautious, but confident.

Remember when Florida State

Remember when Florida State came to the Big House? It was probably 91 or 92 and they put a hurting on us, but the wave still went on. Honestly, it wasn't until the last 10 years or so that I began noticing the wave not taking place during games.

Well, to be fair, Schefter is a U of M guy as well. In fact, he started out as a sportswriter for the 'Daily' in college.

Harbaugh was in the

Harbaugh was in the conversation in 08. And they went after him hard after the RR debacle, when he turned them down flat. Now, the university is going after him yet again. It makes UM look desperate, and the whole thing is getting embarrassing. It reminds me of the nerd asking the popular girl to the prom over and over again.

And if they hire that putz Schiano, I will throw up.

Nice collage

That's quite an assemblage of middle-aged white guys. I wonder if any of them will ever actually coach at UM?

Defense

Well, they did make great halftime adjustments. They held KSU to only 1 real drive which ended in a FG. Their TD came after Morris' INT was returned inside the 10 yard line.

While the first half was a debacle, you can attribute some of that to the D being rusty after a month off and KSU having an excellent game plan. After Mattison saw what they were doing, he changed up the schemes and the D played brilliantly in the second half. He deserves credit for that.

I'll be there bright and

I'll be there bright and early this Saturday just like I always am. And if the Big House is filled with red (as it always was throughout the Bump years), then shame on the fans. So it's been a ho-hum season, so what? Get over it, you crybabies.

Hoke's right about fickle fans. I remember when people were up in arms that an interim coach got the full time job (Carr). Then he won UM's first national title in 50 years, and everyone loved him. Then for the last 7 years or so of his career UM fans were calling for his head.

I think we all owe Hoke a chance here. After the attrocious RR years, Hoke actually beat State and OSU. He's only got one loss at the Big House, and this is only season 3. Give him some time. The season may have been a disappointment, but if these rumors about season ticket holders selling out on stubhub are true, that is just bush league. Win or lose, you go out and support the team.

It was the best special teams

It was the best special teams play I have ever seen. Just amazing. Dileo actually slid into the perfect position 7 yards behind the center. Gallon made a perfect toss to the ref who turned and tossed it to the other ref who ran and placed the ball. Everything just worked to perfection. Oh yeah, and Gibbons made a great clutch kick.
