The take away is that Penn…

The take away is that Penn State is excellent as advertised and our players are excellent and flexible allowing us to either to run almost 100% speed/finesse or 100% beef and run the ball down your throat depending on what the defense is unable to adjust to?

Team looked very good…

Team looked very good overall, was Minnesota a better team than the previous teams we’ve played? Are all the teams prior to Penn State basically warm-up opportunities to fine-tune for Penn State, Maryland and Ohio?

This year feels different…

This year feels different from the last few ... aside from COVIDyear, even when we won most games the wins felt like ugly hard-fought things against opponents who should have been stomped, and just-barely-won scores reflecting that. This year, the folks we are supposed to stomp, we are actually stomping. I don't foresee that ending today.

Michigan 45; Reuters 10

Would have PM’d, can’t seem…

Would have PM’d, can’t seem to sort it from the cell phone though. At the risk of being politically correct, as someone who almost died at 29 of Colitis (yes - it is a disease you can die from), I get your point - he did great despite his illness - but the same way you probably wouldn’t say “everybody get AIDS” or “everybody get cancer”, not sure everybody get Colitis is particularly funny for folks who have/had it. Also, he is likely going through a bunch of stuff on the side - and if he has flare-ups, it will not only impact his playing, but could still end his career.

It looks like a couple of…

It looks like Simon Stepaniak was trying to put on a how to be a dirtbag clinic for MSU. Never thought of Indiana as a dirty team before this game.

I'd like to see a UM Utah

I'd like to see a UM Utah rematch at the end of the season - not often (ever?) you've got two teams playing first game of the season and last game of the season.  Might be a better gauge of how far the team has progressed.

I'd say assuming they've

I'd say assuming they've gotten their degrees, it is a win-win ... they can go somewhere they will get more playing time and the team opens up a space on the roster.

four deep at running back,

four deep at running back, three of whom were highly rated, I feel pretty good about that. (But yeah, o-line)

  1. Derrick Green 5-star
  2. DeVeon Smith 4-star
  3. Justice Hayes 4-star
  4. Drake Johnson 3-star

Funchess - difference between TE and Receiver?

Can someone using small words explain to me what significance, if any, there would be for Funchess to be designated as a receiver instead of a TE? Haven't played organized football, so use the small notes. As near as I can tell a TE's primary purpose is to block and secondary purpose is to receive for short throws as needed (dump option?), where as a receiver, although they may block occasionally, is supposed to go out and receive.

Also, is there any reason why Hoke couldn't designate Lewan an eligible receiver if he wanted to? Would that preclude Lewan from working the line?

Thanks

I think the UFR is going to

I think the UFR is going to be high on circus catches --- or at least very hard. I think the receivers did a great job, but a better opposing team would have adjusted to the bunch of underthrown balls for ints. Does not instill a great sense of confidence.

I dig the weather

I dig the weather report, makes me feel nostalgic, as we freeze our (that was the royal our) butts off on the other side of the world. 5-7 mph winds not super exciting - now if they were 20+ mph winds... MGoWeather - how different are the conditions inside the stadium regarding temperature and wind, than outside (I figure if it's raining outside it's likely raining inside ;-) thx

interesting, apparently he

interesting, apparently he was going to be a preferred walk-on at Ohio before he went Blue?http://rivals.yahoo.com/michigan/football/recruiting/player-Graham-Glasgow-119128;_ylt=AoKaxDgqzPFRM1k.CWXTlAlrspB4

Recruiting rankings for Cleary - if anyone actually cares

The interesting thing is that he was recruited by Al Borges as a walk-on (per Rivals). 2 stars to both services. NR to Rivals, 159th to Scout.

1) I miss the old commitment

1) I miss the old commitment charts with the sad joshs and company - those didn't survive the collaboration did they? If so - link to updated ones?

2) Thanks for the heads up on Alphas - between stationed in Europe and TDY all the damn time to Africa, it's hard to keep up on the latest shows :-)

Paul

On the topic of potentially interesting stats...

I do it if I weren't lazy (and possibly had past statistics...) I'd be curious to know how Hoke's recruiting classes compared to the recruiting classes from other MWC teams - realizing that the Big10 is tougher competition - it would be interesting to compare relative strength of recruiting class vs. conference to relative strength in the conference.

I agree (with your agreement)

It's too early - I would expect  that a few of the highly ranked 4 stars and a large number (possibly the majority?) of 5 stars are likely to wait until late to declare --- as I think most classes will 'find' room for a 5 star who wants to commit at the last minute.

So...

Is the very early 2013 uber-quarterback Shane Morris commit enough for us to consider getting our hopes up for Dorial Beckham?

for the record I'm good with

for the record I'm good with siding with your brother in law and respectfully disagreeing - my perspective is a bit impacted by living in Europe (again) - as Americans in general I think we tend to try and adapt everything to fit our needs - if we don't like it, we modify it. Sometimes we change things and call them by a new name, sometimes, even when we stretch things so far that they barely resemble what they looked like in the beginning - we still call them by the same name. Ten years ago when one of the senior Rabbis in Switzerland attacked the American concept of build-to-suit Judaism, as the token American, I was rather offended... now I'm not so sure he was wrong.

All of that said, it was a fun post and cool points for the creativity.

Hate the Orange!

Pretty sure the orange is for the inclusion of gays and lesbians, not women. http://www.myjewishlearning.com/holidays/Jewish_Holidays/Passover/The_Seder/Seder_Plate_and_Table/Orange.shtml

For the record, hate the orange! (Don't have a problem with gays and lesbians though... women maybe ;-) Hate the orange, modern corruption of old rituals... something along the lines of the perma-protesters on the diag who I'm pretty sure couldn't actually be students - as that would likely involve going to class on occassion.

Harrison

Would love to see some of the Harrison kids end up at Michigan. The coach at Harrison has been around since the beginning of time (he was old when I went to school there in the late '80s!) I'm still chafed that Mill Coleman went to State instead of Michigan in '90... he was our class Valedictorian and a good guy all around.

I think the decision whether

I think the decision whether to keep RR or not may be as simple as the team winning or losing the bowl - with the additional practices allowed due to the bowl game and the additional time for (most) everyone to heal - we are getting awful close to put-up or shut-up time. While the summer will certainly give the team members the opportunity to put on some weight and get stronger, it seems to me that the players, having just completed a full season, should be at their peak.

Personally I really hope the team has the goods as I would much prefer RR to keep his job... a signature win would be terrific about now.

I'm not sure that the chart

I'm not sure that the chart provides much if any value - without having access to % of lean mass --- Herron, Floyd, and Gordon could all be significantly stronger than they were (or just the same) - despite have a 0% change in weight - but without known the before and after fat... hard to judge.

thoughts

I'm with the folks that are saying that winning 9 regular season games next year is the minimum.

My biggest concern is how the "whole package" is missing - we talk about the Offense (generally) looking good and the Defense (generally) looking bad - but the special teams sucked consistently as well. When the Offense was good, the Defense was bad and the Special teams were bad, when the Offense was bad, the Defense seemed more or less ok, but the special teams were attrocious (similar to my spelling).

Random other thought for anyone who thinks RR can't be kept - if RR were to go, we can be certain that there will be a degree of attrition. Keeping in mind the attrition for the past couple of years, can the school handle the attrition without suffering penalties due to the drop in academic points?

my first thought was the columnist was a total idiot...

Anyone who starts with a heading like this: "Rich Rodriguez needs to go if Buckeyes whip Wolverines again" when, just by how this year has gone is a near certainly, is an idiot. If he wants to say Rodriguez should be fired, he should flat out say he thinks Rodriguez should be fired - not try to couch it in an unrealistic if/then in an attempt to make it appear he isn't flat on the side of having Rich Rod fired.

Gah!

Could be interesting if the Gophers catch PSU looking ahead to the Michigan game...

Those are pretty darn similar IMO.

Feels like forever since our

Feels like forever since our last commit... do we have a new and improved short list of who we are likely to see commit sometime in the reasonably near future? I would think wins over Indiana and Michigan State would be enough to convince some of the folks that are doubting the stability of the coaching staff that they will be around for a while. Do we have a realistic shot at any of the elite (high-4 star or better) prospects?

M Women's Crew Rocks! I rowed

M Women's Crew Rocks! I rowed for fun for a few months in the summer of '94(?) and had a chance to meet a few of the folks. At 5'9 167# I was too small for the women's team (aside from the whole, not being a women thing...) They are some high-speed folks - a couple of the girls were up around 6'4" and they all seemed very dedicated. It's good to see the team continuing to excel.

I like it Maybe the folks at MSU are looking to step up into a better graduate school than they can find locally?

Pryor isn't exactly the sharpest... I was surprised as well that there wasn't any push-back on that --- of all the people one feels the need to support, I'm surprised Michael Vick would be on the list... if he were going to make a social statement, you'd think he could do something worthwhile... like 'Darfur' or... well, any number of other things. I wish I could remember his comment from the Army All American... the Sergeant Major of the Army (?) presented him with something or another after the game, I remember seeing it on TV and thinking (from his comments) that Pryor wasn't too bright (or maybe it was just because he was a high school senior??). (tried to google the comments but no dice :-/)
Oh HAPPY HAPPY Deploying Paul Oh HAPPY HAPPY Deploying Paul :-) I was really not delighted w/ missing the entire football season. I feel much better (now about that high speed internet connection...)
Are there a limits on the Are there a limits on the number of scholarship athletes that can be taken in in a given year, or is the sole limiter not being able to exceed 85 total?
also Gibbons equal kicker and also Gibbons equal kicker and Witty equal broke-ass his last year of school --- neither one hardly counts as a "true - we've evaluated you and you are questionable at best based on your schools" two star imho.
At the risk of being nitpicky--- Aren't we looking at a full signing class of 25 for 2010? Somehow "mostly full" conjures up 23 out of 25 or 24 out of 25 ... as opposed to 16 out of 25 (even though I suppose technically 13 out of 25 is "mostly full") I want more on 2010 prospects!
the right direction? I can't answer your question directly - but per the alumni association affiliates page - http://alumni.umich.edu/get-active/clubs-and-affiliates/local-clubs/fin… Regional Alumni Clubs: Nebraska Omaha Spirit Group Asher Stoller [email protected] 402.398.9200 Can probably help you...
Taking a hit My recollection of past games and watching video makes me think that one of the reasons dual-threat QBs don't get injured more is their willingness and "comfort level" taking a hit --- Of the few times I remember Henne and Mallet (sorry - short term memory) running the football - they either slid to avoid the hit (which puts their heads in the wrong place if a member of the D follows through?) or were otherwise gubbied when they got nailed... all tensed up and etc... I know folks have mentioned this latter part before - but dual-threat quarterbacks - like running backs seem a lot more willing/comfortable in taking a hit (or giving one potentially...) and while I'm sure they tighten up as well, I would wager it isn't quite the same terror factor...
also not sure what the point was but it was an amusing (and spelling error free) post on a slow news day...
On a positive note I remember being very concerned about QB depth last year - baring multiple transfers (I don't see Threat or Sheridan transfering though), We are looking at four usable QBs - two with great potential and two with enough experience that 'hopefully' they won't get rattled by being thrown into a game!
And most notably (aside from the win)

Caughty by X - a true freshman

run by X2 for multiple yards - a true freshman

returned by x3 - a true freshman

For any naysayers - I think this game is just highlighted how many quality Freshman we've got who will be outstanding as "veteran" players over the next three years of their careers.

eh sorry, my first post reply - I'll work on formatting in the future
