I just rewatched the Rose…

I just rewatched the Rose Bowl. He can block. I suspect he'll be okay or better at guard, at least until November.

I don't know why a talented lineman would go to tOSU, though. The past few years, I don't think they've developed their OL particularly well. (I know. $$. Still.)

Whatever else is true, on a human level, after last year, I'm glad the kid got himself out of Tuscaloosa.

I think you're…

I think you're underestimating the players. They work hard at this stuff, they've been playing the sport (some year round) for six to eight years before college, and, hey, they're Michigan students. (A little UM alum arrogance there.)

There are UM students in music who can play Lizst, Chopin, Schoenberg, and Scriabin. Heck, there are Michigan football players who get A's in engineering. As a university teacher, I found that we more often underestimate what young folks can do than we need to. (I suspect that Harbaugh is a good coach partly because he believes in the players. I'm hoping for the same from Moore.)

If Michigan continues to recruit kids who will develop and continues to hire coaches who can teach, it'll be fine.

It's still better to have experience, of course, especially if you want to win championships. Look at Michigan's OL the last few years. That's one reason I like the idea of having a former OL coach as HC.

My concern is whether Martindale's defense gets offenses to third down. With the talent on this year's team, I think that's a good bet.

This.
"Screw the NCAA and…

This.

"Screw the NCAA and the Big Ten. I'll just go coach football and maybe do something I haven't done yet."

Not that there aren't nitwits in the NFL, mind you. Still.

Beautiful. Thanks Ace. Yours is a voice I always learn from.

I am beyond delighted to hear it on this site again.

Thanks, Brian. Thanks MGoBlog.

Re: conference championships…

Re: conference championships

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Big Ten Championship game may consist of two teams that played each other during the regular season, right?

So, it's conceivable that that the National Championship final game could consist of a Big Ten team losing to another Big Ten team that it had already beaten twice, possibly once on the road? Ugh.

See the UM/Indiana national championship basketball game in 1976, except we look at football very differently.

I like the proposal that's been floated here where the last week of the Big Ten season consist of matchups between two teams that haven't played each other and are close matchups. In a world with a 12 team playoff, that seems like ... well ... fun. And I suppose it could be useful for teams on the margins of playoff and bowl eligibility.

These fuckin' guys right here.

"Raters who gave only an…

"Raters who gave only an overall score could barely agree with one another on how well a player had performed, as the researchers might have expected. But the grades from the group that used a carefully designed scorecard disagreed even more. Even if you ignored the second group’s overall ratings and averaged their eight specific task scores together instead, there was little consensus among the scouts on what they had seen."

Wait until they find out about inter-rater reliability in college grading, especially in the humanities.

If you don't like this…

If you don't like this comment, take it up with this guy:

“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward."

Be safe, please.

Be safe, please.

I'm not going to waste any…

I'm not going to waste any time doing it, but any of us on this thread could compile a very long list of coaches who said exactly what Hartline said, while packing their bags.

"Cade's superpower, at least…

"Cade's superpower, at least before this year, is pre-snap reads and knowing where to put the ball safely."

I was at the Iowa game.

McNamara's pre-snap read: "Holy shit, I'm gonna die."
Flings ball into the tenth row.

Here's hoping it's better for him next year. I'm pulling for him, except in that one game.

I had a good view and every…

I had a good view and every time I looked at Rolder, there was someone in his ear, and his ear alone, coaching very emphatically. FWIW, it looked like they plan on using him.

There a ton of UM fans in my…

There a ton of UM fans in my section. Shoutout to the guy behind me who said, “He’s got him, throw it,” just before McCarthy hit Edwards in the end zone and, “Jesus, he smoked him,” after Okie hit Petras on the fourth down play.

We were just above where the DL was after that sequence. They were a happy group of guys.

In other news, Hy Vee was nearly out of Vernors yesterday. A lot of people made the drive, I guess.

He lied. He should be gone…

He lied. He should be gone. Michigan should be better than even debating it.

You don't need "beyond a reasonable doubt" to fire an employee who can't be trusted to tell the truth. Not if you're an institution that wants people to believe in "transformational instead of transactional."

Think for a moment: What would we say if tOSU kept a coach who lied?

I'm sure Connelly has…

I'm sure Connelly has reasons for excluding the 1901 Michigan team, which gave up 0 points. It's not the era, I don't think, he includes a 1903 team.

Anyone know?

Naw man, not the Astros…

Naw man, not the Astros. They got caught and they got about the minimum punishment they deserved and the maximum punishment given out.

Now the Yankees, Diamondbacks, Indians, Rangers, Cubs, Blue Jays, Nationals and Brewers got away with it. There's where he should go.

Given the youth on the staff…

Given the youth on the staff, including people who have left, here's hoping the next coach is an obvious choice--young, up and coming, and with a good idea of what he's getting into in Ann Arbor.

Raised in Indianapolis, here…

Raised in Indianapolis, here.

I became an IU basketball fan because I watched Steve Downing and George McGiniss play on one of the greatest HS teams ever, and continued to pay attention to them at IU.

When I matriculated at Michigan, it began to shift. What pretty much makes it 90% UM now is realizing what an abusive asshole Knight was, especially compared to someone like Johnny Orr.

Still and all, there are times when I'm at a game in Iowa City, where I live now, and someone will say something, and I'll think, "People around here don't know shit about basketball." I didn't think that in Ann Arbor, but it's happened a lot of other places.

"Don’t assume that just…

"Don’t assume that just because there is no conflict with UM that they won’t find one."

There used to be a sex shop on S. University ten or so years ago. I was visiting Ann Arbor and I wandered in on a whim.

I said to the clerk, "So, do you have condoms with a block M on them?"

She said, "We did, but the U shut that shit down right away."

Not forward thinking, in my opinion, but what are you gonna do?

Little known historical fact…

Little known historical fact: Sherman would never have made it to Savannah from Atlanta if there hadn't been a flu epidemic in Georgia in the fall of 1864.

My guess? They were putting…

My guess? They were putting stuff up for the Georgia, Bama, and Cincy DCs to think about, rather than running up the score for style points.

But what do I know, except

I haven't read all the comments yet, so if this is redundant, I apologize.

The Germans may have a word for it. The Romans certainly did. I learned it in a Chaucer class at Michigan.

Selfishly, I hope you recover your zest for this.

To people who are…

To people who are complaining that "now" college football is semi-pro.

What was George Gipp's gpa at Notre Dame?
What was his address the year he died?
Who said this, to his coach at halftime, when asked if he cared about winning the game, "Look, Rock, I got $400 bet on this game and I'm not about to blow it"?

Sheesh.

"This guy has a Nobel Prize!…

"This guy has a Nobel Prize! For, like, economics! I could understand it if he had a Nobel Prize for shaping his opinions into pretzels that get him paid handsomely."

If I look at the people who have won the prize, I begin to wonder what the difference is. Then I look at the fact that the prize was created by a bank, I conclude there isn't really much of one.

This gets political really quickly so maybe even this comment is too much. It's worth going down a rabbit hole if one's interested in academia and prizes and economics (or any of the other "Nobel Prizes" that aren't in his will). Suffice it to say that there are many people who don't like the idea of the prize being associated with Nobel, and many who aren't that thrilled with the (perceived) biases of the awarding body.

Whatever else is true, very few academics who win the prize ever go hungry.

I'd rather have Mahomes than…

I'd rather have Mahomes than Brady too. But you know, you don't get everything at every position, even in the NFL.

Thanks for laying it out so…

Thanks for laying it out so well. Two things to add.

I think Willis Ward, who was there at the time, is exactly right when he says, "“It was wrong and it will always be wrong." Ward was a person of his times. He was right, and Yost was wrong. I think a useful way to think about naming is to ask, "What would Willis Ward want, if his great-grandchild were to attend Michigan?" We can't know for sure. It's a place to start.

I went to Michigan and I'm proud I went to Michigan, partly because I believe any great educational institution should aspire to be better than its times, not in line with them. The best you can say about Yost is that he (like all of us, most of the time) failed to be better.

I'm less concerned about…

I'm less concerned about individuals than I am about systems. What Michigan needs to do, beyond every other thing, is set up systems and protocols that make sure that something like this never gets beyond the first victimization.

I happen to think changing systems means altering how we remember people. It matters that the message we send is this, "If you don't protect the young people in your charge (and everybody else you work with), you don't get away with it, no matter how many games you win and how much good you do otherwise."

Having a modicum of compassion for Bo because he lived in a time where he didn't understand the damage that was being done doesn't mean we ignore the fact that he failed in a way that we have to make sure never happens again. I'm agnostic about the statue and other memorials. What I'd like to see is the survivors decide that. They deserve that, at least.

It's not about the dead. It's about the people who are here now, and about the athletes, students, and others who will be at Michigan going forward.

Thanks, Ace. Well done.

As a Pacers fan since their ABA days, all I can say is, "Yes, please."

No to swatting the ball off the rim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChT3ewZXTfM.

There is nothing so…

There is nothing so beautiful as the look on an athlete's face when they've nailed something really hard, and they know it.

Great post. Thanks.

Raiders fans are scratching…

Raiders fans are scratching their heads as well. From their SB site:

"It’s been that type of offseason for Las Vegas. It has been cutting veterans to sign free agents."

He'll find a spot easily enough. Ravens?

Bet you a dollar that…

Bet you a dollar that Saskatoon has a great rink. Plus, why not go to Red Berenson's home province? Regina/Saskatoon/Saskatchewan have a long history of sending players to UM and the Red Wings. (Gordie Fucking Howe, for a start.)

My people are from Saskatoon, and I'm kind of hot about this. Canadians will come out for the games.

If Strickland is a typical…

If Strickland is a typical Brebeuf kid (I went there), Michigan academics will be a big deal for him and his folks.

It'd be nice to cheer for another Indy kid at UM.

As an Indiana Pacers fan, I…

As an Indiana Pacers fan, I'm constantly thinking that Chaundee Brown has a considerable amount of Lance Stephenson energy about him. Not knucklehead Lance, but what we used to call "Good Lance."

Seemed perfectly reasonable…

Seemed perfectly reasonable to me. But then I have a Michigan humanities BA. (And a PhD from someplace else.)

As far as I'm concerned,…

As far as I'm concerned, they can wear whatever the heck they want.

First: Here's hoping…

First: Here's hoping everyone recovers without further damage.

Evil thought: Someone in the Big Ten office looks at the viewership numbers for The Game all the time.

Then they realize that tOSU is ineligible for the championship game because they've only played five games. tOSU has to play someone during "Champions Week," but it can't be Northwestern.

Then ...

I think they're more likely to change the rules to get tOSU in the championship game than to play Michigan, but the mind reels at the possibility, no?

I didn't watch football this…

I didn't watch football this weekend, because of a family thing. I did watch hockey.
Best thing I could have possibly done for my mood.

I did not realize that…

I did not realize that Minnesota is on the east side of the river. Huh.

If you're going to get a…

If you're going to get a president fired, please, for the love of all that's holy, turn your attention to Iowa and get our president fired. It will save more lives, I promise you.

Leave Ferentz alone, though. I'm a Michigan fan, after all.

I saw the Pacers play in the…

I saw the Pacers play in the ABA finals when I was a kid. My mom was one of Reggie's biggest fans, and we went to games together. The last game we went to, Reggie's final season, the Pacers were up 1 with less than a minute. Someone stole the ball, and as I watched Reggie spot up on the break, I said to Mom, "There it is."

Dagger. Game over.

So I can't cheer for the Heat.

Still, Duncan Robinson is a great story, and this is nicely done.

Usually at Iowa, if…

Usually at Iowa, if something happens in the athletic department that's '"appalling" and then "infuriating," "unacceptable," and "offensive" right in a row,' they give Barta a raise, and Ferentz an extension.

Jeebus.

Thank, Ace. Be well.

Thanks, Ace. Be well.

This was my question as well…

This was my question as well.

I used to think the Juggalos…

I used to think the Juggalos shit was funny, until they came out forcefully against white supremacy.

Now I think MSU is unworthy of Insane Clown Posse.

Just sayin'

"In a way, ICP and the Juggalos are the perfect group to challenge Trumpism. They’re a fiercely anti-racist movement based in working-class, mostly white communities. That gives them a legitimacy and credibility in combatting racist sentiment that more traditional political actors lack."
