"The University of Illinois is also in turmoil. The university sports an Interim Chancellor, an Interim Athletic Director, and an Interim Football Coach; the game will be played at Soldier Field, making this an Illini Interim Home Game."

It would be paying players for playing college football. Hard to police from a monitoring perspective, but still against the rules.

This sounds like a positve thing to me.

I'm not an economist so I don't have very sophisticated views on this. I don't think it's such a foreign or controversial idea that sometimes what's most economically efficient isn't always what's best from a moral perspective, though. That's not emotional mish mash. Minimum wage might be an example of what I mean.

It only always comes down to economics if you accept that the market price is automatically where the price ought to be.

I think it's pretty clear she isn't making an economic argument. Many in this thread are just sort of shouting past her.

Anything wrong with that?
If I were a University chancellor, I would be cool with a second-rate football program too.

I don't know what he donates. But if I ever become a billionaire I know for certain 0% of it is going to Michigan.
Edit: what I mean to say is that you make it sound like he should be donating to Michigan if he's not, and I don't agree.
|1 year 2 weeks ago||Ha, no. I think the problem||
Ha, no. I think the problem was that I was just very unclear.
What I meant to say was something like "this argument works just as well for the conclusion that we should get rid of the music school, that conclusion is kind of untenable plus it's not good when your premises just as easily support two contradictory conclusions, therefore we have good reason to think we should reexamine the argument."
|1 year 2 weeks ago||Sorry, I should clarify. I||
Sorry, I should clarify. I don't think we should do away with the music school. I think there are important differences between the music school and athletics that make Brian's argument weak, though. He glosses over these differences, and I was trying to illustrate that in a colorful way.
|1 year 2 weeks ago||Alternatively, this makes a||
Alternatively, this could just as well be a case for why Michigan should abandon the music school.
Sure, different people have different skills. That doesn't mean a University ought to cater to all of them, though.

I doubt this this thread will last very long. But accusing others (who are expressing their genuinely held beliefs) of concern trolling is a favorite pass time of many established posters here. You would think the current state of the football program would put an end to the hostility toward anything that isn't eternal optimism and positivity, but for the most part it hasn't outside of a few approved topics.

That's much less pay than I would have guessed. Not that I'm complaining, though.

Don't fool yourself about the muggles thing. I knew plenty of athletes and they absolutely meant it in a derogatory way when they said it. Keep in mind that our athletes tend not to be the most sophisticated students on campus, so I doubt his point was as nuanced as you want it to be.

This is a pretty common sentiment among Michigan athletes.

Michigan is not "unquestionably a better school than MSU in just about every respect." That's silly to say.
|1 year 5 weeks ago||The point is it's||
The point is it's hypocritical in their eyes to criticize MSU academics (on the basis that they are "worse" than Michigan's) if you yourself went to a school that is "worse" than MSU.
|1 year 5 weeks ago||"Walmart Wolverine" developed||
"Walmart Wolverine" developed as a response to CMU grads (and the like) denigrating MSU academics on the basis of their Michigan fan allegiance. Or at least that's always been the explanation I've seen from MSU fans on the internet. If you're not the sort of person to belittle their education when you yourself did not attend Michigan, then you're not who they mean (according to MSU fans I've actually seen using the term).

The athletic department and the University are not the same thing. WD is a devoted sports fan, and I don't question that. But it's different.
And it's a difference of kind, not degree.

Tutors for athletes at Michigan can be VERY helpful sometimes...
And Michigan definitely doesn't have courses that athletes know are an easy blow off grade, that would never happen.

Their qualifications go well being just having a JD or MD. Read their bios, these are not random ambulance chasers picked off the street.

I believe the department would be worse off if Brian were AD, yes.
