No love for Kingston Davis? I think Davis will follow a similar trajectory as Smith. Overshadowed early on by higher rated recruits Smith worked his way onto the field and stayed there. Davis will do the same - but not in ’16.

I heard Orsen speak a lunch at a luncheon in Honolulu somewhere around 1996. He made a strong case for bombing Hanoi - in 1996.

1. Virginia (Mendenhall)
2. Miami, FL (Richt)
3. Virginia Tech (Fuente)
4. Georgia (Smart)
5. Maryland (Durkin)
Lot's of Cooridators are hyped as sure bets as HC until the Peter principle takes hold. I'll take real world success (Fuente) over potential as a HC (Smart and Durkin). When it comes to potential Smart has a better body of work than Durkin amd walks into a better situation with better talent on-hand and a better pipeline.
Was Durkin's '15 defense really that much better than Mattison's '14 defense when you consider that Mattison's defense was constantly defending a short field and turnovers, didn't have Peppers and had a LB coaching the defenisive backs?
'14 offense averaged 20.9 ppg
'14 defense gave up 22.4 ppg
'15 offense averaged 30.6 ppg
'15 defense gave up 17.2 ppg
I'm not a member of the Ann Arbor pitchfork club calling for Durkin to be strung up for leaving Ann Arbor, nor am I on the Durking bandwagon. Need to see more.

Given even a small chance of success I'll go for the try and fail option over the fail to try option. Or, are we supposed to sit and wait for only sure-fire options.

Favorite Orange Bowl memory; going to watch Miami play Notre Dame. Gerry Faust’s last game that turned into an ugly blow out. On the way to the game I bought a kabob from a street vendor with a hibachi. As I bit into my tasty snack I noticed that the vendor’s bbq brush had paint stains on the handle. That’s Miami.

Can't fault Maryland if that was the case. No matter how much potential DJ brings you can't look past Richt's track record as a head coach.

Nope. Miami is the epitome of a bandwagon school. If it’s a marquee game there’s a crowd. A few might even follow the sport. If it’s a middling opponent the stadium is half empty. There’s a lot of other things to do in South Florida on a Saturday. It was that way even in the days of Jimma Johnson. A lot of urban schools face the same challenge.

In practice directing the child to choose the consequnce frequently results in a more severe consequence. If a group of senior football players are incapable of making a difficult decision, and doing the right thing for the greater good, it suggests that they have been poorly prepared for the world. In which case maybe football might not be the great character building sport we wish it to be.
I think, given the opportunity, the players will make the right decision more times than not. And I think that those players that are put in positions to make tough decisions, even if they get it wrong, will be better prepared for the 'real' world.

Not to mention the impact on Mone's draft prospects. If he's a potential 1st or 2nd rounf draft pick brining him back for a single game could cost Mone millions.

Same with Woodson. The singular talent was on display but how he shifted the entire game plan as a lockdown corner was not so apparent - until he was gone.

The outcome needs to be decided on the field - even when it is decided wrong. To have functionaries deciding the game after the fact would invite massive corruption.

Did you ever attend a game there? I worked for The U, just up the street from the Orange Bowl. I attended many games there including Gerry Faust's last game as the Notre Dame coach that ended in a blow out.
The Orange Bowl reminds me of the old Tiger Stadium, best when seen through the eyes of nostaligia. The place was a dump, bad parking situation, street crime around the stadium, archaic design.
Even at the height of the Whoricane success they didn't draw good crowds to the Orange Bowl unless it was a marquee matchup. 20K was a good crowd for many of thier games.
