One of the most irrefutable proofs of the fact that the BALL DON'T LIE in the history of sports.

Ball don't lie.

Ball don't lie.

Jim Tressel. Elite head

Jim Tressel. Elite head coach, great person, maybe the only public anti-homophobic stance in college football. Total hero.

Chris Spielman. Great player, fantastic analyst, great advocate -- even in the immediate wake of his wife's passing, where you could understand if he needed a while before getting back to work -- for cancer awareness. Another hero.

Jesse Owens. The greatest athlete of the 20th century. Maybe the only person in such a situation whose individual achievements could in and of themselves come close to overshadowing their larger social significance.

Pretty sure the guy he was

Pretty sure the guy he was talking about is a 19-year-old kid who plays football for Michigan, and is named Jeremy Gallon. You know, the one who fumbled because he was hurt on a runback, and was on the ground in pain while your piece of shit of a boss tweeted him a pink slip.

He stays on ESPN because what

He stays on ESPN because what he adds to their broadcasts is, as far as the actual factual nature of his pronouncements is concerns, inessential. He is there because he is more entertaining than Todd McShay, was an extremely good college football coach, and can tell jokes. May is playing straight man to his wild card. That's just how it is.

Don't take it seriously. Holtz doesn't. And neither does May.

Maybe instead of taking a

Maybe instead of taking a moment out of our busy days sitting at desks pretending to do our jobs to rip on a kid without knowing the first thing about why he's transferring, we can just wish him well and keep it moving.

If Hawai'i has run for more

If Hawai'i has run for more than 100 yards on you, you fucked up. That's all there is to it.

They haven't had much

They haven't had much full-contact practice time. Maybe he's trying out his different special-teams looks against Hawai'i since the game's not really in doubt?

It's going to be a loooong

It's going to be a loooong season for USC. You can't surrender 400 yards to Hawai'i. Especially with all the yardage on the ground. This defense is officially SUSPECT.

Leaving rankings aside for a moment, let's hope they're back. Because if they're back, and Alabama's back (this one's pretty much inarguable), we've got pretty two strong arguments for being optimistic about Michigan's fortunes in the next couple years.

Still going strong. That, and Dos Hermanos, are the only businesses still open on that whole city block.

I like to go there from time to time, for sure -- especially when it's really late at night.

Yeah, you haven't had soups

Yeah, you haven't had soups until you've had B's soups.

I would probably not hesitate to kill a man if I thought it would get me her black-eyed pea soup recipe.

The Bomber will serve you

The Bomber will serve you unbelievably large portions for between 6 and 8 dollars. Recommended.

Beezy's, across from the Vu, will serve you reasonably-sized meals. B, the chef, is perhaps the most talented young restauranteur/euse in town; the place is a 5* experience with great coffee, fantastic service, and to-die-for brunch. HIGHLY recommended.

A 2001 Free Press article

A 2001 Free Press article covered the improprieties, which came out in the Marion Darnell Jones / SC Talent Agency hearings:

Since then, quite a few people have paid dearly for Woodson's relationship with Summit and its associates. A big chunk of Woodson's pro earnings were misused, federal investigators say. Jones, Summit partner James E. Brown, a real estate agent and a credit union president have all been indicted in what appears to be an elaborate fraud scheme.

And, because Woodson apparently violated NCAA rules before and during his Heisman-winning season, Michigan has seen its most celebrated season tarnished in the eyes of some fans.

The details are unclear, but

The details are unclear from the standpoint of a paper trail and testimony, but it is likely something happened. Here is a quote from a Yahoo! article:

The only comparable situation is 1997 winner Charles Woodson, who in 2001 was alleged to have taken almost $14,000 in improper benefits from an agent during his Heisman campaign. Woodson denied taking benefits, and the University of Michigan and NCAA were never able to substantiate claims of impropriety.

In the days of the SWC, SMU

In the waning days of the SWC, SMU was a football powerhouse at the level of the great independents: Pitt, Penn State, Notre Dame. They went 41-4 from 1981-1984, with an undefeated season. Mockingbird used to be clogged with the school's incredibly wealthy alumni base and raucous townie fans; it was a sight to behold.

Their dormancy was self-inflicted, and imposed from above. Fans haven't rooted for them since because they haven't had a reason to, and there was a feeling of hopelessness given the smoking crater the school had become. But if they play well, the fans will be back.

Remember, that's Dallas's college football team.

I hope he dies. How dare he?

He actually came up in bands around here, played in Pterodactyls and everything. Pretty rad dude, and absolutely 100% the friendliest and most down-to-earth musician in the business, when it comes to his fans.

165 of 281 for 2050 yards (58.7%)     13 TDs 10 INTs   128.15 eff
116 of 213 for 1293 yards (54.5%)     9 TDs 13 INTs   107.19 eff

Which stat set is Tate's, and which is Marve's? Furthermore, which one of these guys had to throw on Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State, and Ohio State; and which guy only had to square off against Bud Foster and then the rest of the 2008 ACC defenses?

Hope ain't got nothing we ain't got.

I'm not sure, but if I'm remembering right, it tends to be early August. I don't think their presence on campus has much to do with the Spring/Summer academic semesters.

Well, we're looking at

Well, we're looking at another ten year run of filthy-good German teams, it seems. Besides Poldi, Schweinsteiger, and Klose -- whom it seems Müller and Özil won't have any trouble replacing -- this entire team's basically coming back for the next eight years.

Germany lost a game where the referee made up the rules for distinguishing fouls and penalties as he went along, and they played 10-man ball for 75 minutes.

Klose was a moron for getting tossed, and they deserved to lose the game because of it, but yeah. Three stars for a reason.

It is frequently said that athletes are good people off the court just like they are on it.

This man's life should serve as a challenge to every athlete to be a better-than-good person, period. I think his investment of essentially all of his NBA money in some small measure of relief for his war-torn homeland is among the greatest examples of true philanthropy, true selflessness, you could find in major athletics.

I think that answers the

I don't disagree, if that

I don't disagree, if that comes to pass. But http://www.conquestchronicles.com has been posting tweets from incoming athletes and established players, all of whom are saying they don't care about this and will stay. Must be 15 or 20 of them up there by now.

The sample size is a bit

The sample size is a bit small, given that he's only been a college head coach for one year, but a 4-4 record in the SEC and the most competitive game anybody played against Alabama all year have to count for something. Whether it's him or his staff is immaterial for the purposes of debating his prospects at USC.

The dude's brought his outstanding staff to a school completely stocked with absurdly gifted athletes who were mainly new starters last year and STILL went 9-4 (with a victory over OSU); returning most of the defense (including almost all of the linebackers) and upgrading the positional coaching like WHOOOAH is probably going to produce some true nastiness down deep in the trenches.

He's going to be playing in a league that doesn't load his schedule up with Alabama, Georgia, and Florida every year, and whose bowl representatives went 2-5 last year. I'm not saying HE HIMSELF will be the best coach in the country last year, but let's not get ahead of ourselves and say the dude's gameplanning and his staff's preparation aren't suited to getting things done in the new situation.

You don't watch football if

You don't watch football if you think this dude's going 2-10 next year.

This is an excellent point.

This is an excellent point. 'Replaceable' is probably the FIRST word I'd use to describe a guy whose backup can go into Columbus and force overtime by throwing for 233 yards and 2 touchdowns.

In the student section,

In the student section, everything's better.

* Everybody's inebriated. As a result, everybody's friendly.

* In 2010, only a quarter of the remaining kids will have seen any of Lloyd's teams, and even then Oregon, Appalachian State, and Ohio State were three of the home games they saw that year. So the fans in the student section don't yell, 'We want Lloyd back' as frequently as they used to (ca. 2008).

* You can stand when your team's on the field and nobody will be bummed out.

* The drunker students leave early, so you can move down pretty easily after the first half.

In my opinion, there is one

In my opinion, there is one coach in the country who can win with ABSOLUTELY ANYBODY. His name is Brian Kelly. And in 2007, Rich Rodriguez looked exactly like Brian Kelly does in 2010.

It remains to be seen whether he will be able to repeat his success at Notre Dame.

But yeah, you're smoking some crack with that 'dozen' comment, brohammer up there.

I was running past Rynearson

I was running past Rynearson Stadium this morning, and I have to say that it's miiiighty suspicious to see that EMU is putting the finishing touches on an OPAQUE practice facility in such close chronological proximity to what's been going on with Michigan.

You might say I'm overreacting, but isn't it just a little fishy that immediately after these practice violations were announced, EMU is given the funding approval for the bubble by its regents, with Dr. Derrick Gragg (former ARKANSAS deputy AD, who moved to Michigan only a year and half before Ryan Mallet transferred down there) among them? What better way to ensure that the rising tide of investigations doesn't sink all ships, than to make sure your practice space isn't see-through?

If English isn't in on it, there's something not right with my powers of observation. And I see just fine.
