It's a high risk-high reward strategy for them. IMO, it's a way to make up for the deficiencies of their players, not unlike how everyone used to call Beilein's 1-3-1 a gimmicky defense meant to overcome his players' deficiencies.

Can't see it at work. On a scale of 1 to 10, with that Odell Beckham Jr. ridiculous three-finger catch last night a 13, how would you rate Denard's catch?

And how many of them transferred and left early for the NFL (or other reasons)? More than 8, I'd wager.

Nobody is arguing that what he did isn't allowed - of course it is. What everyone is arguing is that it's blatantly dishonest and unethical.

He was offered a full scholarship and committed. He also informed the coaches he would be graduating early and reporting to campus in January 2015. Now, 2 weeks before his HS graduation and 7 weeks before he was to start classes at college, he is basically being told not to bother showing up, but to wait a year before being granted a scholarship. His options are:
If he were offered a greyshirt from the beginning, then this would be a complete non-issue.
|6 days 7 hours ago||actually||
No, Dan Mullen didn't really give him an option.
I've copied ESPN's definition below, but he basically said thanks, we want you, but not until spring semester in 2016. He graduates in 2 weeks. if he wants to go to mississippi state, he can't enroll full time. He could theoretically enroll part time, pay $12k per semester for tuition, room, board, books, etc., and have nothing to do with the football program while on campus. Great option.
Everybody who follows college football is pretty much aware of what a redshirt is, and a grayshirt is basically a delayed version of a redshirt. When a recruit grayshirts, he signs a letter of intent in February but doesn't report for fall practices with his teammates. He delays entry to the school until the spring semester of his freshman year, keeping the NCAA five-year eligibility clock from starting. During that first semester, he can't enroll in college as a full-time student, can't receive his scholarship, can't practice and can't be around the program in any official capacity.

Saying a kid needs a backup plan sounds all well and good in theory, but he just had the rug pulled out from under him a couple weeks to HS graduation and 7 weeks until classes start at miss st. I would've been feeling pretty comfortable about my future college plans at that point, also.

Have you ever been to Champaign and New Brunswick? I've been to both and, well, let's just say that Champaign is a miserable cow town, while New Brunswick is actually kinda nice.

If I'm reading this article correctly, it seems to suggest that the first 3 stay bonuses of $500k each were paid out in December 2013 after completing his 3rd full season after the bowl game. So far this year, no stay bonus until he completes the season. If you were to recalc after the bowl games, Hoke's compensation would be at least $600k higher than what is listed (stay bonus + annual contractual increase in base pay of $100k/year).

Sumlin? Maybe, but he's been trending down, also. 11-2, 9-4 (with a close bowl win over Duke), and currently sits at 7-4 with the final game against LSU. Could very well end the regular season at 7-5. Is that a $5M/year coach?

Saturday is supposed to be a high of 34/low 28 and partly cloudy, but dry. Sunday high of 50/low 37 with chance of rain.
Probably means the day starts cold, but gradually "warms up" to low-mid 30's throughout the game.

love the "inflection point" story. It never gets old hearing about the dramatic turn at that point in time. Including that game, Michigan has gone 47-17 in conference play and won two conference titles since that point.
The other big-time programs?
michigan state: 43-22
ohio state: 44-20
Also, in reading the mlive feature on Beilein, there is a real shot he retires with 800+ wins. Wow.

|2 weeks 2 hours ago||I don't see how this is||
I don't see how this is disrespective Beilein. It's a guy's opinion based on the talent and experience we have on hand. Probably sees it as having lost some key talent (GRIII, Stauskas, McGary, Morgan, Horford) with young talent to replace, but lacking in key areas, i.e., the frontcourt. Michigan WILL be weaker in the post than last year, practically a given. The question is whether Caris can truly become elite and the youngsters can fill the gaps left by GRIII and Morgan/Horford (and, to an extent, McGary).
