They didn't make the field. I think the NCAA made a huge mistake because clearly they are a top team and would be a threat to win it all! (in the NIT) KenPom rates them ahead of the likes of Colorado, Utah, GT, Oakland, Colorado St, Iona, Belmont, Monmouth, Richmond, Akron, Boise St, UT Arlington, and UNC Greensboro.
They clearly got robbed and I will shed a tear for them tonight.

you just restated my point - that it's basically a test to see how closely the committee aligns to RPI (not MY theory, as its been talked about quite a bit here and elsewhere). in some cases, very much so. in others, not so much. The final seed list doesn't tell us WHY they're in that order. The theory is that the RPI is a big driver.
this is as "meaningless" an exercise as the computer composite comparison. I don't know why you're fighting it so hard.
(And for the record, I'm not the guy who's been down voting you)
|1 week 21 hours ago||You're missing the point||
Which is that the perception is that the committee strongly values the RPI, and the delta between RPI and the actual tournament seedings. I never made any value judgement about the quality of the RPI.
At any rate, it looks like Alex's method and RPI both suggest that teams like Seton Hall and Maryland are very overseeded, while Wichita State and WVU are underseeded, although there is more agreement with the RPI comparison than there is with the computer composite comparison.
|1 week 22 hours ago||We've heard that they rely||
We've heard that they rely quite a bit on RPI, so did a few calcs on most teams (quit once I got into the small conference auto-bids).
I've highlighted a few below. Negatives indicate underseeded (NCAA seed lower than RPI), positive indicates overseeded (NCAA seed higher than RPI).
Teams most underseeded include:
Teams most overseeded include:
Michigan's RPI is 25 vs. NCAA seed rank of 27, so slightly under but not enough to impact our 7 seed.
Okie State RPI is 40 vs. NCAA seed rank of 37, so slightly over and would have been an 11 seed.
Going strictly by RPI, the potential 10 seeds Michigan would've played are Wisco, Xavier, Vandy, and Wake.

Assuming things like weight, length, and diameter are held constant (or as much as possible), you can compare distance for aluminum alloy (do they even still make all aluminum bats anymore?), wooden, and composite bats. What's the hypothesis as to WHY one type of bat might help a ball travel farther?
If you can get your hands on a radar gun, you can also test average ball speed.
Maybe have a tee set up, multiple hitters, over several sessions/days.

The take by IU blog Crimson Quarry after the game.
The freshman guard [Grant Gelon] poured in 160 points per 40 minutes on 100% shooting in one of the finest offensive performances in Indiana history.
Once Zak Irvin airballed a shot, only to have the offensive rebound fall directly to a teammate who then nailed his ensuing three-pointer, I turned off the game and started playing FIFA which also went miserably.
Plus Calvin and Hobbes reference. Loved it.
Also, a take from one of their commenters:
Michigan scored 90 points in 59 possessions. That’s a hair better than 1.5 points per trip. Michigan basically played 6 guys. The lowest offensive rating of those 6? Abdur-Raman and Wagner tied at 137. 137! That’s better than our best, Thomas Bryant at 133. Derrek Walton had an offensive rating of 196. that means he was scoring almost 2 points for every possession he used… I guess 21 points on 8 shots (and 5 assists) will do that. Meanwhile, Blackmon only attempted 3 shots in 33 minutes, none from outside the arc. And McRoberts played 18 minutes,missed both shots, and had a rebound, a block, and a foul. Offensive rating of 0 in 18 minutes of play, and evidently he wasn’t a defensive factor either, given Michigan’s efficiency. Woof.

The big issue with this proposal is that it was literally written to address the Michigan spring break practice trip, and then expanded to figure out how to make it apply to all other sports, while trying to preserve the status quo of off-season practices/competitions for the other sports.
There is likely to be some confusion and uncertainty over how this affects specific situations in other sports, and whether it truly is for the benefit of student athletes or merely to level the playing field for recruiting in a single sport.
I have to wonder if this is more a case of the administrators actually having heard from their student-athletes on the issue, or more of "we know what's best for you so do what we say." I'm strongly inclined to believe it is the latter.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||actually||
I believe you were being facetious.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||it's carefully worded||
allowed if associated with competition. if practice purposes only, not allowed.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Met his massive potential||
Great player, glad to have had him in the winged helmet these last several years.
Blasts from the past are pretty consistent - naturally gifted, NFL frame, massive upside, either injured or just not fully engaged jr/sr years of high school.
He started slowly, but once the light bulb turned on, he was nigh unstoppable.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Wasn't that from the ESPN Big||
Wasn't that from the ESPN Big Ten blog? I recall there being one where kids are trick or treating, door opens, it's the same group of kids every time, but in different costumes. With Harbaugh in the background, of course.

if he signs with Michigan: made the right decision in the end! awesome!
if he signs with Georgia: overrated headcase, better off without him.

Big Ten and other teams of interest. Basically, ohio state has an epic class with 10 in the top 100 and 6 (!!!) Rivals five stars. 'Bama is not far behind with 9 overall and 5 five stars. Clemson only has 3 on the list, but they're all ranked in the top 18.
There are 15 kids on the list who have not yet verbally committed.
NOTE: 5 stars are #1-34 and are italicized below, #35 and down are 4 stars
ohio state (10) - #8, 9, 16, 22, 24, 33, 39, 55, 66, 91
Alabama (9) - #1, 4, 19, 25, 32, 40, 53, 67, 82
Georgia (8) - #17, 20, 35, 46, 58, 60, 71, 88
Florida State (7) - #3, 5, 23, 36, 56, 81, 96
Michigan (6) - #12, 26, 41, 52, 74, 76
Stanford (4) - #7, 10, 14, 69
Clemson (3) - #13, 15, 18
Nebraska (2) - #62, 90
notre dame (2) - #44, 95
Penn State (2) - #11, 78
Florida (2) - #84, 87
Iowa (1) - #30
Maryland (1) - #93
Special Mention - Oklahoma for top 100 all name team

Those people must've been kicking themselves after Dresibach-Hayes to win the game. That game was my sophomore year. Classic.
|9 weeks 5 days ago||Love Devin Bush||
but would love for him to avoid anything even bearing the resemblence of targeting. He was ejected once and had at least another 1-2 no-calls which could easily have gone the other way. I don't know if that was just bad luck or what, but gotta be careful out there.

|9 weeks 6 days ago||to be fair to the rest of that commentariat||
It seems like Boiler Husker is the resident nutjob. The exchanges typically go something like this:
Boiler Husker: Michigan is a lesser program than ours.
Everyone else: "That's... debateable" and "and we haven't been relevant since 2001"
BH: "Venebles should leave for another challenge... there is literally nothing Michigan can offer him that we can't."
Everyone: "More delusional fantasies," "You seriously can't believe half the stuff you write," and "hottest of taeks"
BH: "Nebraska outclasses everyone in the Big Ten in matters of prestige, tradition, and national interest. Name one school in this conference that has a better stadium, better facilities, and better fans. Go on… I’ll wait."
Everyone: "Not a single coach would say it’s easier to win in NU over , MU, and . Lol get over your fan homerism and see the reality of the situation" and (ok, so this is from an osu fan, but I found it funny) "OSU. Any more brain busters?"
|9 weeks 6 days ago||Seriously||
what a maroon.
The one thing that WOULD make sense about Venables moving to NU is the fact that he's a central plains kid - grew up in Kansas, played and coached at K-State, coached at OU before going to Clemson. With the success they're having at Clemson, though, I can't see him taking anything other than a head coaching position as his next gig.
|9 weeks 6 days ago||i guess||
you haven't spent any time with penn state fans lately.
|9 weeks 6 days ago||do you even follow college football?||
to suggest that Georgia is in any way comparable to Mississippi state or Ole miss when it comes to tradition, stature, and results in the field is just incredibly ignorant.

extreme homerism and Michigan hate. to be fair to the commentariat, though, they pretty much all recognize that he's full of crap. except for the other psu schmucks. everyone else WANTS Michigan to crash and burn, but still assume a floor of about 8 wins.

|10 weeks 1 day ago||I can't gripe too badly about||
I can't gripe too badly about psu being ahead of us, unfortunately.
If anything, I'd say Michigan could be ahead of Wisco, but even then, it's optics and what have you done for me lately. Losing 3 of 4 to close the season looks bad, while Wisco actually won their bowl.
USC ahead of Washington is, again, WHYDFML effect. I don't think it's correct, but they are practically tied, points-wise.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||oh||
I thought we quit doing that in 2009

|10 weeks 5 days ago||a bit strong to say he is a "bad HC"||
He has an overall positive winning record. Before he took over at Ball State in 2003, the last time they had a winning record was 1996, with consecutive 1-10 and 0-11 seasons thrown in there. They were REALLY bad. It took a while, but he got them to consecutive winning seasons.
The last winning record SDST had before hiring Hoke in 2009 was in 1998. It can be argued that he turned them around in 2 seasons, with Rocky Long sustaining it since.
Did he fail to meet Michigan's high standards for a head coach? Absolutely. Was he in an untenable situation at Oregon as DC? I believe so. Was he a "bad HC" as you suggest? Debateable. He has a positive track record at G5 schools, but perhaps he's just not built to run a P5 program.
At the very least, I think he'd be a good interview for WMU, even if they don't hire him.

|11 weeks 1 day ago||there are not SAT-BHM||
there are not SAT-BHM flights. He'd still have to connect somewhere, that place likely being ATL. Of course, depending on timing of flights, maybe SAT-ATL-DTW makes more sense than SAT-DTW non-stop.
|11 weeks 1 day ago||indeed||
BHM is a spoke, no connecting flights to speak of. I mean, theoretically, you could build an ATL-BHM-DTW routing, but the only people who would do that are folks who need to stop in BHM for a reason, or those on a mileage/segment run (i.e., need extra miles/segments to get to the next airline status level before the end of the year).
|11 weeks 1 day ago||Not Harris||
WD is only referring to verbal commits who have said they will be enrolling early. Harris is not verbally committing anywhere before he enrolls.
|11 weeks 1 day ago||Don't need to pass through TSA||
Just need to have people posted at every exit in the main DL terminal, and at baggage claim, in case he breaks through the first line of defense into the secondary (very likely to happen, based on what I'm told about the kid).
|11 weeks 2 days ago||agree with you||
put cook or fournette behind our line and our rushing attack this season is much more effective than with smith, green, Evans, Isaac, et al.
|11 weeks 2 days ago||bad = good||
he's using the term "bad" in its ironic sense. think Shaft being a bad mother. can you dig it?

on the island of Bora Bora. my new wife and I were hanging out by the pool and started making conversation with a few other honeymooning couples. one of them graduated the same year as me from Michigan, same major, and we were in a couple classes together, although we didn't know each other. shared a few good stories about certain professors.
another guy graduated a couple of years after us and had a Michigan themed wedding. we all ended up going out to Bloody Mary's bar that night. good times.
