Myles Amine (174), Logan…

Myles Amine (174), Logan Massa (165), Stevan Micic (133) and Kanen Storr (141/149) started off the year on olympic redshirts. Storr came out of his redshirt halfway through the year, but the other three get another year of eligibility - basically a 6th year to compete.

The advantage to this for Amine is that Mark Hall from Penn State and a bunch of other really good seniors at 174 will be gone...although I saw a comment somewhere that Amine might bump up to 184 next year. For Massa, too, Vincenzo Joseph from Penn State will be gone at 165 next year.

For 2020/2021, the lineup should be something like this:

125: Medley (4th at BTT)/McHenry (coming off redshirt)

133: Silva (8th at BTT)/Micic

141: Silva/Micic/Drew Mattin/Cole Mattin

149: Storr (5th at BTT)

157: Lewan (5th at BTT)

165: Massa/Cam Amine (coming off redshirt)

174: Massa/Cam Amine/Myles Amine

184: Myles Amine/Embree

195: ???...maybe Gaige Garcia

HWT: Parris

Parris, Micic, Myles Amine can all challenge for championships/top 3 at worst at the NCAA's. Massa, Lewan, Storr are a step below them, and then the others in the running all have potential to do well but might need some more improvement or things to break their way in order to do well at the NCAA championships (top 10). But the team overall should be one of the deepest in the Big Ten and the country and should rival Iowa, PSU, OSU for the top spot overall.

Listening right now and…

Listening right now and hearing something in the background from 5:15-6:30.

I guess for me the decisive…

I guess for me the decisive battle is OSU's pass offense against MSU's pass defense. Red zone scoring will remain elusive for OSU, but if they can hit a couple big strikes, it'll keep them in the game.

I think MSU over OSU 21-19.

I think MSU over OSU 21-19.

Michigan scores as many points as it wants against Rutgers.

Iowa over Northwestern 17-14.

Yeah...still thinking it's…

Yeah...still thinking it's week 8. I meant the games until Michigan.

My take

Mone isn't a passrusher. Florida knows where he'll be on every play, and Furbush gave Don Brown a lot more flexibility in how he attacked. Variously, I saw Furbush line up as a traditional SAM, rush with a hand down, blitz from a middle linebacker position, and drop into a zone.

So just Brown messing with the Florida o-line.

My take

We saw fewer freshmen play last night (e.g. Martin, Ross, etc.) partly because the rotation overall tightened up.  Hurst and Winovich played just about all the important snaps, and even Kinnel, Metellus, Bush were out there on the last drive. Michigan went with those they knew they could lock down Florida.

correct I was referencing his most recent in the sub reports which came from his podcast interviews of Pep and Mattison. I do agree he is far more connected than many of us realize.
Sam is better connected In part because he has direct access to coaches and staff through his new podcast. Steve and Isaiah are great too, but as far as inside reports from camp go, Sam has more and clearer information.
I think we'd all agree it'd

I think we'd all agree it'd be a far bigger shock if he came back than if he left. I'd argue his return would be a bigger surprise than Lewan's for 2013.

I don't think a back who got

I don't think a back who got 0 carries against OSU or FSU is coming back. Or if he does, he's not playing a huge role. Walker RS - I didn't include any Redshirts except Spanellis, who's like our 7th OL at the moment (even though he'll get passed by Ruiz and others IMO).

Yes, I agree drawing an

Yes, I agree drawing an arbitrary line doesn't tell the whole story. But given the standard deviation in rankings such as these, and given the data the NFL draft bears out, highly-ranked recruits are more likely to be successful and contribute at a higher level to their teams. For every low 4-star like Hurst who turns into a 1st-round pick, there's another 5 that end up with ho-hum careers.

Even looking at 2017: Michigan has Jeter, Hudson, Malone-Hatcher and Irving-Bey that are ranked with a few points of each other as low 4-stars. What are the odds all 4 will be key-contributors to Michigan? What are the odds any of them end up all-B1G players? What are the odds any are drafted in the 1st or 2nd round?

Put it this way: I'd rather Michigan be pulling players from a top-100 pool that has somewhere from a 50-75% success rate at being key contributors to their college team than a pool of 101-300-ranked players that have closer to a 33% success rate at being key contributors to their college team.

Yes, you are correct on all

Yes, you are correct on all counts. There are a lots of "ifs and buts" with our returning players. If Furbush can play well...If Kemp and Marshall can be quality backups...If JBB or Ulizio can turn into a decent tackle.

I haven't looked, but was he

I haven't looked, but was he rated as a DL by all the services? Or did some rank him as a TE? I know Alabama wanted him to play TE.

Thanks...corrected.

Thanks...corrected.

So that's a good benchmark

So that's a good benchmark for a successful or even great class. And people wonder why MSU had a 3-9 year? Low 200's or even a 147 like this year indicate a pretty blah level of recruiting.

what has been Michigan's highest ranked class what has been Michigan's highest ranked class prior to this year?
One of the perceived problems

One of the perceived problems with nfl coaches is that some also have trouble adapting to the inferior talent/knowledge of college players that may have difficulty executing pro-style schemes.

So yes, can a guy who coaches terrible nfl teams really do better with players not as experienced or physically skilled?

BTW - I only posted to point

BTW - I only posted to point out there's far better OT content for our boards than reveling in some guy fapping in public.

Not OT Season?

OT - Fran McCaffery won't shake hands

OT - security guard masturbates and gets fired

OT - Let's talk about my Fantasy Team

OT - Why does Columbus smell?

OT - Should I waste money on the lottery?

Two that surprise me are Deron Irving-Bey and Two that surprise me are Deron Irving-Bey and Kwity Paye, given both aren't as highly ranked by the services. would be interesting to see if they turn in good performances if they get re-ranked.
Player/Position Rankings

Players/Positions I'm confident will be above-average in the B1G:

QB - Speight

RB Committee

FB - Hill and Poggi

OL - Cole, Bredeson, maybe Newsome

TE - Asiasi and Wheatley, and maybe Bunting

DL - Gary, Hurst, Mone

Back 7 - McCray, Kinnel and Clark

Players/Positions that I hope are B1G average:

WR - Perry, Harris, Crawford

OL - 2 spots

DL - Winovich

Back 7 - Bush, Long/Hill, Watson (Nickel)

Players/Positions that might cause us trouble:

WR - 4th and 5th wideouts

OL - 1 starter and 6th/7th

2nd string DL

SAM linebacker

2nd safety

Here's an article for Steve

Here's an article for Steve Lorenz in the freep listing 4 visitors - but know Kurt Taylor: http://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverine…;

They had 27 for 2016 class,

They had 27 for 2016 class, and backdated 7 EEs to the 2015 class. So there were 5 available for Michigan to backdate from 2017 to 2016. When Hawkins didn't enroll, it dropped their 2016 class to 26, and opened a 6th spot to backdate from 2017 to 2016.

Where's your source for the

Where's your source for the Sept. 24 official visit? 247 doesn't list one for him on that date. They do have his Indiana visit, though.

Yes, recruits can walk on and

Yes, recruits can walk on and receive a scholarship immediately if they've not been recruited. Being recruited means going on an official visit and receiving in-home visits. There also might be other limitations on communications/mailings, etc.

Not according to 247. They

Not according to 247. They list 0 officials for him and no record of a sept. 24 visit.

can he do a 6th year elsewhere? Gotta imagine both Drake and Isaac would be interested in grad transferring elsewhere to be the lead back, esp. if they're 3rd or 4th at best on the depth chart here.
I liked Seth's segment

You should have Seth on more often; he's got good analysis. Plus, I like how you made him memorize Brown's playbook so none of us have to.

IT'S WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

AND THIS IS NOT A UFR!!!

But a real comment now

MSU appears to have high-end talent, especially in their starting 5. But if they get more than one long-term injury to one of those first 5, their depth drops off fast.

Future 4th down options

I await the day opponents end up going for it on 4th and long because the odds of turning it over on downs or throwing an interception are significantly lower than either a blocked punt or Pepper's returning it for a touchdown.

I agree on Thomas

If you watch his head, he took his eyes off the quarterback for at least three steps as he went to his right and the QB went the other way. If he had kept his eyes on him the whole time, he would have seen him tuck and run and been able to get a better pursuit angle.

Talk about that time you were talking about...

The worst part about these questions is it's fairly easy to see most of these reporters have stories half-way written and are just looking for quotes to fill them out.

He is indeed on the participation list.

He is indeed on the participation list.

he's a RS freshman Harbaugh meant Carl Myers, a walk-on, who also played.
runyan is class of 2015 you also missed Kemp, Eubanks, and the other Johnson.
that age, yes Michigan's Adventure for 8 and 7 year olds is good. I took some teens there last month and it was only okay for them. your kids might not get to do all the "cool" rides, but there's far more options for that age.
I take him to mean

that Cobb, Ruth, et al. might not dominate as much in the current talent pool, given the occurrence of more and better athletes now than in the past.

Your pitching point is noted, but in general pitchers today put more spin in different ways than in the first part of the 20th century (sliders, cut fastballs, etc. being the prime examples).

Allow coaches to soft-toss a pitch

to the batter if the pitcher takes more than 10 seconds from catching the ball to deliver. Near homeruns as a punishment for a long delivery will do a lot to incentivize faster delivery.

I garden

Lot's of flowers and vegetable produce. I also "garden". Poppies, mostly, with some salvia, peyote and betel nut thrown in for good measure.

Gardening, too

I garden, too, and have thought about scaling up for extra income. But man, it's a lot of work to make the margins work.

Seth - LJ Scott

is missing from the by position breakdown.

Track Meet Accident

Was at a track meet in college. Lewis University had the indoor weight throw going on with now cage. I was walking outside the boundary, but one guy f'ed up and threw his 35 lb steel ball completely sideways to the pit, 30 feet into the air and 50 feet away.

I vaguely remember people yelling "watch out" but woke up 10 minutes later with the paramedics cutting off my sweatshirt and shirt.  Found out I ducked enough for the weight throw to hit my shoulder before smashing into my head. Walked away with a concussion and a bruised shoulder.

Next year, Lewis had a cage up and doubled up the roped off area. I was too young to think about suing them but I probably had a pretty good chance for some pain and suffering damages!

My daughter made a birthday card for my sister-in-law

And somehow messed up "birthday" so it looked more like "bitchday". "Happy bitchday Aunt Melissa" just about sums everything up perfectly!

SPARQ Scores for reference

So Samuels' 138.3 is comprised of a 4.58 40, 4.14 shuttle, 43' powerball, and 44.5" vertical.

For reference, Donovan Peoples-Jones had a 149.49 with a 4.42 40, 4.00 shuttle, 43.5' powerball and 42.4 vertical.

If he's serious about having a faster 40 time, he could conceivably be approaching one of the top 5 SPARQ scores in the last 4 years (the only score better than DPJ's is Speedy Noil with a 153.51 in 2013).

2.75 stars

I'm intrigued by the higher than expected percent of available starts for the 2.75 stars. I think that speaks to the "sleepers" that Michigan evaluates and recruits that the recruiting sites aren't aware of. I'm thinking of players like Jeremy Clark, Willie Henry, et al.

I'm also curious about the dips at 3.4 and 4.4. Not sure if there's anything to take away from there, other than that there's athletes (Vladimir Emilien for example) that get rated highly early, but don't get dropped when they fail to improve/perform.

Points of Comparison

Just to compare apples to apples:

Michigan gets $10.1-$10.9 million in cash/apparel each year of their deal - NOT including their $12 million up front. Combined over 11 years, that's $11.2-$12 million each year.

OSU gets $215 million in cash/apparel over 15 years, with no mention of a signing bonus. So $14.33 million each year. So they're anywhere from $2.3-$3 million more each year than Michigan - for 4 more years of term and for a deal that will end 6 years after M's. And, like Seth said above, this is not including Michigan's insane 15% royalty agreement.

Other points  of comparison - OSU's includes $41 million in scholarships and internships for non-athletic dept. programs. I can't find what that amount was for Michigan.

Bottom line, when you consider the term and inflation, Michigan is doing just fine. When they renegotiate in 2026, it's probably a safe bet they're going to get $20 million+ per year.

Here's the link. It's from a bookmark, so the landing is a little out of date. Just click on "MgoRadio" under the podcast category, and it pulls up a running list of the podcast segments.

Hackett's Apparel Choices

Looking at the picture of him by the plane -  painfully obvious choosing his clothes is the ONE thing he can't do well. The blazer/shirt are ehhh...but those jeans tho!
