11W and RCMB need to stop trying to make fetch happen.

I was watching the talking…

I was watching the talking heads while at a restaurant for lunch yesterday, and the question was should JJ be a top 5 pick (it was muted, but that was the tag line for the discussion). I couldn't hear (re on mute) and there was no closed captioning, but Stephen A Smith was spouting something off and showed plays of JJ's picks this year. I was like what, he only has 4 and 3 were from BGSU. They even showed the almost INT from the Rose Bowl. Man, these guys try so hard to be controversial, and it worked - my blood was boiling.

Totally agree, I made a similar point above. That's some decent talent, and with good coaching could be just fine.

I know we can't put too much…

I know we can't put too much stock in freshman, but couldn't this team be moderately better than a bubble team with the transfers being discussed?

I realize the team was hot garbage this year, but these are pretty decent starters. I'm probably choosing to be overly optimistic, but with good coaching and a little luck, they could get some momentum early. State wasn't even on the bubble with like 18 wins. I know 8 to 18 (or 20!) is a big jump, but this was a historically ass year and some natural reversion to the mean should be expected.

Agree, I never heard any of…

Agree, I never heard any of that in the early to mid 2000s.

Well, you can always say you…

Well, you can always say you were just quoting Kindergarten Cop and you'd be just fine! Everyone loves that movie.

"It's not a tumor!"

(This was in response to WCB, hard to follow now)

you seem to be trying to…

you seem to be trying to catch everyone in a logic trap here. I don't recall you ever being so negative on anything before, maybe I'm just not remembering (I'm here everyday, though).

Who did you think was the slam dunk hire that UM passed up?

I don't mind the cussin' on…

I don't mind the cussin' on message boards, but aggressive statements like "shut the fuck up" are part of what's wrong with message board and key board warriors. Would you say that to someone's face who was having a discussion with you? If so, that's even more problematic, as that's what's leading to the inability to debate or discuss something with nearly anyone in today's world.

I like peeps, but my wife…

I like peeps, but my wife hates them. Anyone else with me?

I tutored Manny and DeShawn…

I tutored Manny and DeShawn one time (as in, one session). It was a Classics class (I was a classics minor). Humble brag, I was the only undergrad who was hired by the university to tutor athletes on the recommendation of a professor, usually it was grad school students. This was a big deal to me at the time, because I usually tutored wrestling and volleyball athletes, not basketball (and football had separate tutors). I haven't told that story in years, and am very grateful for one more retelling lol.

I live in the Chicago burbs, and I can tell you that every ILL fan I have ever met hates Michigan with the fiery passion of a thousands suns. Even more odd, they think they are huge rivals. I'm just fine with them losing.

I'm too lazy to find the Peter Pan bang a rang GIF, but please picture it in your mind's eye.

Happy Friday!

now the only thing I can think of is the scene from Dirty Grandpa where the fat guy puts his man boobs on the windshield and screams DAYTONA BEACH!!!

I'm trying to get to 5K, we are like the tortoise and the hare.

I would think replays would…

I would think replays would have to be more objective because there is (usually) more clear and obvious answers that are more heavily scrutinized, given the 10 minutes the zebras take to make a call.

You can say that again!

You can say that again!

There are over 500k alums…

There are over 500k alums. Let's say 50 athletes (5 basketball players/year for 10 years) get preferential/undeserving degrees. Is that really reducing the value of your degree vs the 500k "deserving" grads? I can see on disagreeing on principle, but not in actual perception. I knew someone who was a professor's son (non-athlete), and he didn't know 10th grade math in his sophomore year at UM.

It's hard to maintain even…

It's hard to maintain even one at an elite level. Some schools have done both (Texas, Florida, osu, UM) for a few years, but nobody can do both consistently, it seems.

So if UM hires a new AD…

So if UM hires a new AD changes their approach, will you go root for another school? You are right that their are plenty of others.

Or would you continue to root for the school you have always rooted for?

I wanted to make a reference…

I wanted to make a reference to poolhall junkies by "noticing a crease on your pants", but couldn't fit it in seamlessly (so I settled for this pun).

It's not UMs job to be the…

It's not UMs job to be the white knight to save the b12/acc/smaller conferences. They take all the risk, none of the reward. ND felt very slighted by with new playoff format. They will be conference shopping soon enough, methinks. I don't want to trade the other b1g semi-rivalries (Iowa, psu, Wisconsin etc) for NC state, etc. Not to mention the non-football component.

Well that's usually when…

Well that's usually when there are a ton of opt outs and apathy. The upset that derailed UM season was a 2 vs 3. It wasn't a mid major.

In basketball, shooting could be ice cold (ie 3/20 from 3), and just 1 player can take over a game since the same 5 play on O and D vs 22. My point is that liberty and ucf are rarely beating the big dogs, and not 3-4 games in a row. And we have seen that, it's not like "oh I wonder what would happen".

We know what would happen…

We know what would happen. 2016 wmu lost its bowl game to a 3 loss Wisconsin team. Liberty got shellacked by Oregon this year. Boise state had an epic win against Oklahoma (one of the best games of all time), but it took double OT and every trick play known to man. If they played an Alabama or Georgia or UM equivalent very next week, they probably lose badly, too. Basketball allows in a lot more teams, and can be more flukey. Football isn't analogous.

ND will join a conference in…

ND will join a conference in the next 5-7 years. Trying to emulate that would slightly delay the inevitable at a major cost to UM ($$, reputation, rivalries, prestige). Cutting off nose to spite face. No thanks.

We UM have negative 8 wins…

We UM have negative 8 wins in that scenario? Because i can't imagine we look back fondly in perhaps the worst UM season ever.

Year 1, maybe so. Keeping…

Year 1, maybe so. Keeping Washington, Reed, dug + the 3 recruits may be better than whatever roster UM rolls out next year. But pretty sure in year 5 (or even year 2+) the next coach won't be having perhaps the worst year ever in the program. That's just...ugh. it's abysmal.

That's what she said...

That's what she said...

UM may not be a blue blood,…

UM may not be a blue blood, but they have quite a history and are on that top 20 tier. Lots of championship games, just not many championships. A few more and might be a different perception. Don't need a gimmicky system, can easily finish in top 3rd of b1g and compete for s16/elite 8 banners with a "traditional" coach. Doesn't mean they don't have their wrinkles and strengths, of course. Gimmicks get busted by even decent teams.

Great points all around. The…

Great points all around. The only thing I'll disagree with is the premise that building a basketball roster is harder than football. There are so fewer players on a basketball team, that if you hit on one or two players, yiu can be good to very good. 3 and you're elite.

fully support Dug doing what is best for Dug, but the pic with the loyalty tat is a little ironic. I get his coach is out and all that.

Happy indeed! Hosted my wife's fam yesterday, it's my mom's birthday today, so need to call her. Ate too much this weekend, not sure why I decided to have fried chicken for dinner Friday night hahahha.

Bang bang bang! 3rd time is the charm!!

I have read lots of articles…

I have read lots of articles on both sides, as you note (including some Washington commanders hack who is basically shitting all over him), but I haven't seen any proxies debating michigan as a program or legitimacy of the season. If anything, it's the strength of the run game and D that pundits use as JJ not "bring trusted to run the offense" or other such garbage.

I was thinking the same…

I was thinking the same thing - $600k, wow, didn't he just graduate a few years ago? Didn't realize it was over 20 years ago, time flies! Buts it's really hard to judge position coaches that aren't ace recruiters.

Plus I know every job seems easy if you aren't the one doing it lol. Not that you implied anything like that.

But can he throw a football…

But can he throw a football without hands?

Exactly, if someone doesn't…

Exactly, if someone doesn't want the b1g and sec having more than one autobid, then remove all autobids so the winners of the scrub conferences have to "earn" it too. Not in top 16 by virtue of your product on the field? Sorry, you didn't "earn" it, or aren't "deserving". Most years it won't even matter, because the b1g and sec would get at least 3 each.

as a diary, someone should look at the final rankings for each year of the CFP and see how many each league would have had, with and without the recent conference alignments. I might even do it, if nobody beats me to it.

Wouldn't UM be the cuckold…

Wouldn't UM be the cuckold in this analogy, not the conference?

Edit: replying to Franz, hard to tell on this site

Where in Arlington heights?…

Where in Arlington heights? The bulldozed area the bears own? Not sure where else could house a game, but maybe missing something.

except there are 68 teams in…

except there are 68 teams in march madness. you can have 20 that are scrub teams, and still include all the good teams (team 49 or 50 or whatever really have no say). and how often do those teams actually win more than 1-2 games? plus upsets are way more likely in basketball.

Now we are talking 16 teams, with 4-6 being teams that likely aren't even in the top 25. why allow really bad teams in at expense of a deserving team? what other ncaa post season tournament are you thinking of that do this? the other football playoffs also have seeding, to my knowledge.

the day UM gets left out when unranked mountain west champions etc get it, you may change your tune.

Thanks for sharing. My bro…

Thanks for sharing. My bro went to msu, so my dad holds this view as well.

My rebuttals are: lsu is in a more fertile recruiting area, and the fact that Saban won a championship there quickly says something about something. Msu has championships, but the last one was in the 60s, and lsu's only/previous one was in 58. Msu was every bit as mid as lsu, and the fact that lsu is now a powerhouse shows it had way more latent potential.

Also, coaches are almost always about self interest. Harbaugh went from USD to Stanford to the NFL (leaving out current situation). Beilein went all over the place. Msu is no sleeping giant, their destination coach dantonio sniffed the playoff once and lost 38-0.

I dunno, to me, loyalty at work doesn't mean you can't leave for a better opportunity. If your company can't/won't offer what you deserve, you should be able to take your talents elsewhere without being judged or branded as "disloyal". Speaking more about work than coaches at this point.

Well said, agree on most…

Well said, agree on most points, but one: why do you hate him for leaving MSU? He went to a much better job, it happens every day. Would you want to live in EL and be second fiddle?

I hate this idea (although…

I hate this idea (although you are certainly just as entitled to your opinion as I am). Nobody is sitting for conference championship games, national titles are very hard to come by, and conf titles still have banners and rings.

Plus, matchups can be completely different, what if UM beat Oregon 2x to win that b1g title, Oregon wins once in the playoffs and gets the b1g trophy now? No need to make that adjustment, in my mind. I value the national championship way above conf titles, but yes, in that example, I'd still care the UM won the b1g (and so would the players, coaches and recruits).

But then you have 5/6 scrub…

But then you have 5/6 scrub teams that will just get completely pantsed, no thanks. I'd rather not have a any guaranteed conf Champs and just guarantee a number of schools from the SC2 (two super conferences) and maybe some from the other P4

Conference championships…

Conference championships will still mean quite a bit to a lot of people, players included. Look at UM team goals every year: b1g title, national title, beat osu (in no particular order). I don't think anyone will be sitting out.
