Among their "Honored" basketball numbers is the #80 of the late Bobby Speight, Wilton's grandfather. He was an All-American, and scored more than 1400 pts and grabbed more than 1000 boards in the early 1950's. Two-handed jersey numbers look so weird to me in college basketball.
I went to the UVa game there in 2011 and have a few observations.
1. If you are at all transit-savvy there's no reason to drive. The free shuttle from the CP metro station couldn't be easier.
2. Maryland fans have a terrible reputation, but I didn't take any grief for wearing UVa stuff. We did win by three scores in an empty stadium, which helped, I'm sure.
3. Those obstructed-view field-level seats are in fact really obstructed.
But Graham fails even the most impossibly narrow definition- he has a contract to coach Arizona State next year. That's exactly what Bo told us was a no-no.
It would be great to get and keep a foot in the door at the school that produced Eli Harold (UVa) and Derek Nnadi (FSU commit). Though 7-on-7 coaches are also really important down in that part of VA.
Am an alumnus of the school I'll note that the private school competition in VA is really uneven. Many of these schools will produce legit players- Benedictine has other BCS-level players, Woodberry Forest has sent guys to ND and Stanford recently, Collegiate is sending a QB to the good guys (and sent one to the current Super Bowl champs), and St. Chris has some BCS-caliber guys on their current team. Benedictine doesn't typically play them, but the Long brothers (Chris and Kyle, not Jake and John) also came through the Prep League at St. Anne's- Belfield. But as overall programs, none can compete with big public schools. I shudder to think what would have happened to my Cadets against Derrick Green's Hermitage team, for instance.
That said (and at the risk of arguing against a point no one has made), I'm confident that the coaches know how to account for competition level on these tapes, especially since the advent of all of the camps, combines, etc. that the current kids go through. Very excited for Ferrell to have a Michigan offer- it looks like he will be an asset wherever he ends up.

Gotta disagree with that ESPN article from a couple of weeks ago: I really don't think it's that M doesn't recruit nationally, it's just that they also clean up locally.
I hear you on hoping guys from your school end up going Blue. Clelin Ferrell goes to my alma mater, and they face Wilton Speight on 9/12. I hope it's Speight's only loss of the year, and that Ferrell has a huge game but doesn't hurt anybody. Recruiting makes strange bedfellows.
UVa is a Nike-exclusive school, and I like more of what they put out for UVa than what Her Dassler and them put out for Michigan. Besides lacrosse stuff (some of which has been mega-flashy lately), the stuff they put in the UVa Athletics store is pretty subdued. There are exceptions, of course, but generally it's all pretty well-executed. That may be the happy result of being a low-priority for their designers.
But I liked the game better when the teams from the better FCS leagues (CAA, Southern, Big Sky, etc.) were in the game. The generic "FCS-[Region]" teams are way less fun- though it does encourage you to schedule a MAC or Sun Belt team instead.
Would've loved to have had him. Doesn't look like we were that involved, but as a Pens fan and a person with that last name, it would've been awesome to see him in the #87 Legends jersey.
Will never be confused with an elite district in Texas, but it does include FUMA's high school team (not to be confused with their post-grads, but very strong) and Woodberry Forest (Doug Randolph, CJ Prosise, Ed Reynolds, Aramde Olaniyan).
I'm no friend of Speight's Collegiate Cougars. But I'm so old I can remember when they produced a two-star QB whose only offers were NCSU and Duke, even though he was a two-time Metro POY.
We were spending NYE in St Pete with friends, and it looked like the Outback looked like a fairly likely proposition for M, so as a hedge I bought a membership in the Bowl itself. I got the lowest level, for about the price of a ticket. It gave me the right to buy four tickets and a parking pass. As soon as it was announced that M was going I called the members ticket line and got right through- got four tickets and a parking pass. It was my first bowl, so forgive me if this is all obvious to bowl vets.
The parking for members was directly across the sidewalk from the gate, and our tickets were on the 10 in the second section of the lower bowl, on the Big Ten side. Not bad, but far from perfect. Couldn't hear the band, and I was as disappointed as everyone else in the video boards and the result. Sitting away from the people who bought their tickets from the University meant there were a lot of very casual fans. Lots of being loud while we were on offense, not enough being loud on D. There was a drunk guy behind me who kept saying "Let's go boobs!" - but that's life. The Sakerlina fans I interacted with were all cool.
The best part was that the lot for members was so convenient that we were out of the lot and on the highway in ten minutes.
The takeaway for me was that since Michigan doesn't have a huge problem selling bowl tickets, that Michigan fans should consider paying a small premium for slightly better seats and a much more convenient logistical experience. Not a must, but something to consider.
The ACC plays as a league, and has a conference tournament, there's just no autobid because there aren't six teams. They often all get in to the NCAA tournament anyway.
Then the B1G should add schools that are strong in things like agriculture, education, and applied sciences, where there's lots of federal research money. Like Nebraska, MSU, and UM. Oh, wait.
Both Maryland and Rutgers have major athletic funding problems from facilities projects in the last decade or so. Maryland was having money problems before the Friedgen firing due to the way they structured their basketball stadium financing, and Rutgers is having serious money problems due to their football stadium expansion. Why would the B1G want to do business with these departments, particularly since you can already get the BTN in large portions of their footprints?
Yeah, juries probably don't listen to instructions, and the burden is different in civil cases. Doesn't change the nature of what a burden is and is not. The plaintiff still has to be the one to get the jurors up to a preponderance. Maybe it works when allocating liability among multiple defendants (haven't really thought about that since school), but I suspect not.
Each defendant gets a zero baseline, and then the sovereign has to "prove up" each element of a given crime to get a conviction on that charge. That a given proportion of defendants are convicted of a given crime is supposed to have zero bearing on the particular case the juror is hearing. Your way might be an effective method for an observer to use when predicting an outcome, but it's still not the way a juror is supposed to be operating.
I've now watched Edsall-coached teams twice in person. The first time was my freshman year at a CAA school, where we beat them handily, and it seemed preposterous that they were planning on making the jump to 1-A. Then this season I watched my grad alma mater, an ACC school, beat his Terps handily in College Park. This was ostenibly a rivalry game, and none of the nasty-by-reputation Terps fans even bothered to give me any grief.
That he was able to take a CAA also-ran and turn it into a Big East champion, and then can't manage to generate even token enthusiasm at Maryland is really astonishing. I can't see how this wasn't a disasterous hire both for him and for Maryland.
Neither the refs nor Bettman allowed Staal to score his shorty in Game 4. Neither the refs nor Bettman put Osgood completely out of position on Talbot's second goal in Game 7. And since the Pens had obviously also been to the finals the year before, shouldn't they have been "gassed" as well?
Finally, understand that your thesis requires Gary Bettman to be so competent that he can successfully influence the outcome of a really close SCF.
Anyone else think that the involvement of senior non-athletic administrators in all of this might really complicate their accreditation? IIRC, Auburn got put on probation for, among other things, the appearance that their president didn't have ultimate authority ofver the athletic department. If the football program's reputation was more important to senior university officials than prevention of violent crimes on campus, and proper federal crime reporting (a big, separate issue), it seems to me they could be in even more trouble than the NCAA or CiC can bring.
We lived outside of Richmond, and since my family was never going to listen to Rush L. or "The Sounds of Your Life," we listened to a lot of sports talk radio. Trust me, the people who called in to those shows hated Beamer. It's crazy that he got through that stretch. This is a genuine imponderable.
That's easy to cure: all you have to do is meet a few. They watch one game a week, think they are the only school in the country with any traditions, and act like college football started in 1995. A clueless, infuriating bunch.
Even though their civilian band (their TAMU-style cadet corps has a band, and they often go to games) has it written on the backs of their idiot uniforms.
But because newspapers take their credibility for granted, they rarely run retractions, and when they do, they're tucked between the notices for estate sales and the "look who's forty!"s.
For a couple of reasons, which are related:
1. There are way more people walking around the city on the weekend in their Michigan, Wisconsin, ND and Penn State gear than Rutgers gear. Rutgers grads do not care about Rutgers, since culturally they probably wanted to go out of state to a private school.
2. This is even more important: LOTS OF PEOPLE HERE ALREADY GET BTN. I can't emphasize this enough.
3. I'm making this up, but it's truth-y: I bet the cable companies that don't carry BTN would be more likely to cave with the addition of ND than Rutgers.
