A 30-34 25-75 percentile ACT split implies that 25% of the accepted class had a 35 or 36. A brief internet search says that .38% of ACT scores are 35 and .076 are 36. in 2013, the latest date for which I could find info, 1,666,017 took the ACT.

My dad grew up in the Depression on a little post stamp farm in Ohio. No electricity no plumbing and horses for the plows. He got himself a pilots license in high school during the war and just after, through an endless series of hitchhiked rides and bus transfers. He went to Korea, came back, and worked his way to become a college professor. He raised four amazing kids. He had a heart attach at 52 and in the subsequent 35 years has run or walked six days a week. He gave me the courage to change careers in my twenties and becomes a college professor myself.

Your conclusion (na gonna happen) is fine but I don't think we want the chance of a particular given person choosing correctly (147.57 quintillion) but of SOME person doing so - the chance of the event happening at all.
We've got 11.57 million tickets to the "perfect bracket" lottery on ESPN alone. So one way of calculating the chance of someone getting a perfect bracket on ESPN are presumably .....ohf*ck someone else calculate it for me.
But this is still not right, because we are not picking a truly random event. It would only be the right calculation if Kentucky vs. Hampton etc had a 50/50 outcome.
Imagine I, a middle-aged college professor with a negative vertical leap, were playing a competitive game of HORSE v. Trey Burke. And yall were betting on it. Lots of people would win that one, not just 50%, because the outcome would not be a random event. Now imagine Trey Burke is playing vs. 63 middle-aged professors in a bracket. The probability of a winning bracket existingn would not be 1 out of 147.57 quintillion.

|25 weeks 4 days ago||I don't think we can blame "culture of success" re: Detroit||
Let me tell you what it takes for a kid to get involved in, say, robotics, in local suburban schools: you show up to the robotics club meeting at lunch or after school. Done.
Let me tell you what it takes for one kid to get involved in robotics in Detroit: every Saturday he has to get on one bus to downtown, then another to Midtown, where the only robotics team in town operates. This is the DETROIT bus system we are talking about. Then he has to make the return trip. He has to do this around any opportunity for employment, homework time, the needs of his family, etc.
Or what about this kid: she's in foster care, has been in three different schools in five years, has got herself a job and gets herself there and back every week, college counsellor literally once in ten years sent a kid past community college, has 500 kids on her roster, and has no earthly idea what the Common App even IS?
How can we attribute this to "no culture of success? rather than NO RESOURCES FOR SUCCESS. You're right that the system are poorly funded, but how we can attribute this to having, well, the wrong "culture", I dunno man that seems pretty mean. I don't think you meant it that way but it does.
PS These kids are real not theoretical - the first one got admitted to Harvard but chose Stanford. The second one is applying to schools this year.
|25 weeks 4 days ago||Alum?||
If you ever want to do alum interviews of local kids, let me know (unless you already do!). There are some really amazing HS kids around here.

But you do lack the facts. A wealthy kid can afford to screw around in a major where a bootstrap kid cannot. You won't find so many art history majors with mechanics dads, but if your folks can pop for grad school someplace maybe you can swing art history.
And really what is meant by a "competitive" major - have you got anything other than your own prejudices to show that working class kids are not working as hard as you?
And you think sociology is easy? Not if you do it right.
|26 weeks 4 days ago||Thank you sir||
This is a pet issue of mind as I came from regular folks and went to a school full of posh people. And that was back when posh was 6200 a year not 62000.

People who think the money is a non issue are less likely to have any. The premium is $120k you could invest in grad school. The NU option leaves you rolling in debt for years compared to the UM option

I'd say the high schools are better here than in South Lyon, if you are ambitious (sends lots of kids to elite schools), although this is likely to change eventually. I have a niece and nephew raising a family in South Lyon, they get more for their money in terms of real estate but less in terms of culture, walkable "town" vibe, etc.

Harvard's endowment is in the billions I think; it would not substantially change its bank balance by adding "media money" (and yes, "insane" would be the word for media money directed at public interest in Ivy football).
Did you actually READ the article? It describes the change in Harvard athletics as being driven by the school's policy to offer free rides to EVERY student with a family income less than $60,000. This is not a device to buy athletes, it is offered to every single student with that income profile.
Yeah sure money corrupts; in this case, however, the money is being used to offer all kinds of amazing students an opportunity at a debt-free education. At the "big boy" schools the football players get this kind of deal but not the future physicists, teachers, novelists, etc.

Sorry. Fans supporting athletics are nice, but they are not why we're here. Why Brandon matters is because he reflects poorly on the primary (academic) mission of the school. Given that one-seeds often enough play other one-seeds in the final, is perhaps the likeilihood of of a one-seed winning understated? If East 1-seed plays West 1-seed, the winning percentage for a given one-seed team is 50%, although there is a 100% chance of one-seed winning the game.

7 upsets in 23 years = 7/(23*4) = 7.6% chance.

That would help us tease apart whether this is really about demographics or really about some states being basketball state
So my difficulty is the implication that some states do well because of "demographics" (.e.g race) and others because they are "basketball states."
That is, "controlling for" the presence of black players in order to determine the remaining effect (that is, removing the effects of demographics from the rest of the analysis).
Also I think perhaps you have the numerator and denominator mixed up.
You are proposing:
# of players regardless of race
"Total Black population"
Could that really be what you meant?
|1 year 20 weeks ago||Really? Really?||
Did not one but two posters just suggest that the figures are distorted by the presence of actual black players who should be removed so we could calculate whether a state is a "real" basketball state?

At some point will mgoblue.com offer tickets, if only to season subscribers? That seems to have happened in the past. I had sortof expected it to be announced today with a sale tomorrow, for example.
I notice that stubhub has no seats available for lower section 1 or 201, so I figured those are reserved for teams to distribute, but I don't know how.
I also notice that the number of tickets available for Saturday (I cant get down there Friday) has been increasing over the past 24 hours, which I assumes also means the prices will have to soften a little.
Anyone with prior experience know if it is risky to wait until Friday's result to buy tickets for Saturday's game?

Zoltan Space Emperor of Space was a business major - which required like a 3.5 in his first two years just to get into the program.
Zac Ciullo I don't know what his undergrad was in but whatever his major was, his record was sufficient to be admitted to UM law school.

I believe UM takes loads more out of state students than UNC, which is vastly harder from out of the state than from within. Your grades look good - if you can get up the ACT a bit even better.
My main serious piece of advice is to get your recommendations from a teacher who is actually a GOOD WRITER and knows admissions pretty well. On some forms, for example, it really matters (as a general, not UM specific observation) if the teacher marks you as being absolutely at the top of the class among students they've seen, or merely pretty close. It matters if they can explain WHY they think you are outgoing hardworking insightful etc etc instead of just saying "any school would be glad to have him."
If UM does interviews (I don't think they generally do but someone can correct me), make sure to come prepared and knowledgeable about the school. Dont ask questions that you could have googled, that always seems lazy to me. Anything you can find out on-line, you should already know.
If you write an essay for a school, make sure your knowledge of the school and its fit for you are really evident; not by just claiming "I"m a good fit," but by demonstrating whatevr that school craves (independent spirit, scholarship, intellectual curiosity, a good 40 time, etc etc.)
I do a LOT of admissions interviewing for another school and these are things that have stuck out to me over the year. Good luck and go blue
|1 year 26 weeks ago||Let's use Occam on this||
The simplest explanation (making the fewest assumptions) is usually the best.
|1 year 26 weeks ago||Expectations (Statistically speaking)||
If you assign a 40% chance of winning to "not favored", 55% to "favored but hard", 70% to "favored but dangerous" and 85% to "easy wins", I get the following (barring some math errors which are surely presen because I'm doing this on the back of an envelope)
UM = 7 current wins + expected 6.7 remaining = 13.7 total conference wins
Staee = 7 current wins plus 6.25 remaining = 13.25 wins
Iowa = 5 current wins plus 6.8 remaining = 11.8 wins
Wisky = 4 current wins plus 7.1 remaining = 11.1 wins
Yall are welcome to slap some other probabilities up there, I don't imagine it would change the expectation order very much. Interesting to note that that, UM's expectation is 3rd of 4 (i.e. it still has a very tough schedule head compared to Wisky and Iowa.
|1 year 26 weeks ago||He's at Goucher||
There are exactly two Wolverine fans at Goucher so far as I can tell.
|1 year 26 weeks ago||Right but||
He has that counter move. So he's not just reliant on the three.
|1 year 27 weeks ago||I think you missed my point||
|1 year 27 weeks ago||What else could the story possibly be||
Did they play badly? No. Would they have been better with the injured players available? Yes.
|1 year 27 weeks ago||Remind me why||
We are so allfired eager to take the Five off the shitlist and put up banners to them, etc?
|1 year 28 weeks ago||Yeah they lost 2 in a row,||

2006 Northwestern almost convinced me never to come back

We uses to have no PSDs and all those sports anyhow

What does that mean "look harder" ?
|1 year 31 weeks ago||Geez||
I hate autocorrect. Sorry for those typos
|1 year 31 weeks ago||Go ahead||
The folks that are saying you will be miserable have forgotten that the alternative is generally not "go without your baby" but "have your kid cry and cramp and harsh your vibe at home."
|1 year 31 weeks ago||Wow!||
Huzzah is right!! Enjoy the kids and your time off.

I'm ok with it being investigated, but it does smell kinda funny (we were minding our own business and this guy came outta nowhere and punched me .... And in an hour or two I got it looked into).

Even my kids did not know about my criminal lycanthropic past.

Come on up to the D and represent urban gardens to the people who need them here. I have a friend who works for Keep Growing Detroit (she is a big Wolverine fan I wouldn't be surprised if she sees this post and her dad will for sure) and I bet she knows a lot of people who would come out to hear about your operation. And I bet you could exchange a lot of good advice!

.....let's take the guy with a very limited record at WR who has some unknown significant injury.
DG to self: A or B: A) Shoot for a WR spot with limited experience and coming off an injury or B) Let's try putting together a complete season at the position I've intended to play for years, put the 13 season behind me, and THEN enter the draft.

That's crazy talk, man.

This is no longer true (I am looking at BTN2GO on my phone rightnow).

They are being far too coy for a injury with a known prognosis. Hope the kid is ok.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||I was there too||
I used to live in Evanston (my son was born there) close to the field; I took him back for that game and we walked up from our hotel. It really was a perfect fall weekend and the second half rocked too. Northwestern fans are very gracious - imagine walking back to a hotel through a crowd of Staee fans

It can't at all be attributed to luck and randomness when we are comparing it (as in the chart) to other teams. Luck and randomness apply to everyone, and can be positive as well as negative. The difference between us and other teams we gotta own up to.

Would you rather have the resources of a 2 or 3 time national champion or clean up a program someone else messed with? Any amount of money Texas can bring to the table I expect Bama can match.

In Evanston near the El or even in Chi. If it's nice it's not even an impossible walk from downtown Evanston. Parking near the stadium is a drag though and it's in a surprisingly residential neighborhood so getting there and away in a car is painful and time-consuming. I used to live in that neighborhood!
