|36 weeks 4 days ago||Don't try to second-guess admissions||
I see a lot of parents commenting, or reporting the comments of other parents, regarding a preference for one program or another on the part of admissions officers. I would take these with a grain of salt. I have literally never heard an admissions officer claim an advantage for one over another. So much of "what school X prefers" is based on a sample consisting of "what the mom of a kid down the block told me."
With the really competitive schools, the problem is not just doing very very well on grades and tests, but standing out from the background noise. Harvard's admit pool this year might be 40,000 kids. There is really nothing your kid can do that they have not already seen.
Kids stand out to admissions because of their personal qualities and accomplishments. If you have a graduating class of 100, and you are in the top 10%, then there are nine other kids you eat lunch with every day who are as accomplished as you based on grades alone. Just imagine how many hundreds and thousands are in the pool whose grades are the same as yours and have the same test scores.
Write something more interesting, read something more interesting, run faster, be nicer and more thoughtful, than those other kids, and you will achieve a better admission results.
|36 weeks 4 days ago||Bless you I agree completely||
I wrote an extended rant to the same effect below. For the record, for example, International Academy did not, IIRC, send any kids to Harvard last year, nor did WiHi, although this year's results have not been announced.
The drop-out rate of the IB programs is pretty fierce!
|36 weeks 4 days ago||OK but a contrasting opinion||
From someone who does dozens of interviews a year for an Ivy League school.
A curriculum that wears your daughter out and leaves her devoid of enthusiasm will not improve her chances at an elite school. I see a lot of kids in IB programs and a lot of kids more oriented towards APs. There are good kids in both pools. But, a lot of IB kids are pressured by their parents to chose the program, and it's hard for some IB kids to stand out from others in their school. When I ask them about their extended essay they display limited enthusiasm and do not seem to have engaged in the material the way I'm sure their parents had hoped.
Likewise, there are some kids who come into my office from schools that are AP mills actually apologizing for "only having six APs." The NUMBER does not impress me, so long as you are engaged the material your are studying. I don't see the point of taking AP Physics if you hate physics and don't plan on taking any in college. A kid who takes 8 APs is not twice as smart as a kid who takes only 4.
From either program, a kid who arrives at an interview, or who sits in front of a blank page ready to create an admissions essay, who is EXHAUSTED and depleted and has no enthusiasm for his/her task, is lost.
Please lord let that kid take 3 APs and write a screenplay, or get a good night's sleep every once in a while. She will be better off than if she takes 8, unless she decide for herself that that is what she wants and needs.
The "take it at community college" opinon works for some, but for others it detaches them from their school community and means they cannot show their passion for other things (extracurriculars) or reduce their time to just recharge their jets and read (I would prefer a kid who reads a lot over all other things).
That's a roundabout way of saying LET YOUR KID DECIDE.

|38 weeks 41 min ago||Alaska, Uganda||
Alaska was the best - the weather was in the 80s and the skies were perfectly clear. Train from Anchorage to Fairbanks, and road trip all the way down to Valdez, car ferry across to Kenai Peninsula, back to Anchorage. People so friendly, like Iowa with mountains. Heavily featured: glaciers, midnight sun, pancakes the size of manhole covers,sled-dog puppies, drive-up espresso booths in the middle of nowhere, car ferry snackbars with fresh salmon as the main featured item. Vehicle not memorable.
Uganda was the worst - I mean, it was a trip of a lifetime, but oh lord we were being driven around Western Uganda in a Toyota Land Cruiser when we made friends with a local intestinal bug. And it's not as though you could jump out of the vehicle and resolve the issue behind a tree because a) no trees and b) people everywhere wanted to check out what the mzungu were doing and c) lions.
Especially with the lions.
|39 weeks 4 days ago||Aha, the special snowflake argument||
What does that even mean - we "deserve" it? Don't you only mean "we WANT it?"
The median team has a .500 record. We do way better than that. Would we like to do better, far far better? Sure/ Do we "DESERVE" it? Why - because we are morally more deserving?
The claim that we are ENTITLED to be better-than-most all the time is a) statistically unlikely to happen b) because it's really really unlikely to happen to ANY team, makes whoever suggests it seem pretty ignorant about statistics, and c) because it's driven by a sense of entitlement, makes whoever suggests it seem like a giant baby.
You got someone who can do better? When was the last time we had someone do better? That's right, it was a LONG TIME ago. It DOESNT HAPPEN OFTEN.

Can I just point out the irony of a lot of people who sit around watching the game on TELEVISION with no personal commitment at all suggesting it would somehow be better if the people that show up for LOTS of game were penalized by obliging them to give their seats to whatever undergrads because it would look nicer on TV. If you are so eager to see the lower bowl filled up come fill it.
Because the people that dig out their cars and drive through the snow and pay $10 to park in the friggin PiHi parking lot 1-2 times a week all winter apparently are not worthy to occupy the seats that they already paid for twice.
Yes there are people in my area who DONT show up, but tell me how you would fill their seats without also yanking the seats of steady attenders?
AND GOOD LORD have none of you noticed that sometimes the Maize Rage has whole quadrants of the upper bowl filled and sometimes - like specifically the same damn games where some lower-bowl Old Guys dont show up - sometimes the RAGE is also highly diminished. I honestly dont see much difference in attendance pattterns between the groups.
And where were all the Maize Rage kids over winter break? Hmm?

If any Mgobloggers have not been down to IU in a couple of years, you might be unaware that US 24 has now opened from Toledo to Ft Wayne. It's empty of traffic and saves me on average about 25 minutes from Ann Arbor. Take 23 south to Toledo, 24 west from Exit 4 (I believe) all the way to I469 south (ring road around the east side of Ft Wayne), then join i69 and proceed the "old" way.
Not much to eat on that part of the route but anything that takes a 25 minute seam out of Northern Indiana is fine by me.
|1 year 4 weeks ago||Words from a native||
1) Games are pretty laid back and the natives are friendly even if you win.
2) Leave extra extra extra time getting down from Indy as the highway is being changed from a state road to Interstate 69 and is down to a single lane in either direction in some place. My back route into town (take the North Walnut exit, left at the first light, right onto Dunn) did NOT work last time, as they had blocked off the interaction of Dunn and Bypass near the stadium.
3) It is also a notorious speed trap so watch yourself.
4) They are pretty good about policing underage drinking and don't fight in a bar afterwards :)
5) Parking I don't know - if you are parking anywhere near downtown and can take a 20-25 minute walk you don't have to be super near the stadium.
6) Upland is an awesome brewpub although everything will be jammed up after the game. At least you don't have to worry about a Hoosier throwing a punch at you; they are resigned to their fate.

Your conclusion (na gonna happen) is fine but I don't think we want the chance of a particular given person choosing correctly (147.57 quintillion) but of SOME person doing so - the chance of the event happening at all.
We've got 11.57 million tickets to the "perfect bracket" lottery on ESPN alone. So one way of calculating the chance of someone getting a perfect bracket on ESPN are presumably .....ohf*ck someone else calculate it for me.
But this is still not right, because we are not picking a truly random event. It would only be the right calculation if Kentucky vs. Hampton etc had a 50/50 outcome.
Imagine I, a middle-aged college professor with a negative vertical leap, were playing a competitive game of HORSE v. Trey Burke. And yall were betting on it. Lots of people would win that one, not just 50%, because the outcome would not be a random event. Now imagine Trey Burke is playing vs. 63 middle-aged professors in a bracket. The probability of a winning bracket existingn would not be 1 out of 147.57 quintillion.

Let me tell you what it takes for a kid to get involved in, say, robotics, in local suburban schools: you show up to the robotics club meeting at lunch or after school. Done.
Let me tell you what it takes for one kid to get involved in robotics in Detroit: every Saturday he has to get on one bus to downtown, then another to Midtown, where the only robotics team in town operates. This is the DETROIT bus system we are talking about. Then he has to make the return trip. He has to do this around any opportunity for employment, homework time, the needs of his family, etc.
Or what about this kid: she's in foster care, has been in three different schools in five years, has got herself a job and gets herself there and back every week, college counsellor literally once in ten years sent a kid past community college, has 500 kids on her roster, and has no earthly idea what the Common App even IS?
How can we attribute this to "no culture of success? rather than NO RESOURCES FOR SUCCESS. You're right that the system are poorly funded, but how we can attribute this to having, well, the wrong "culture", I dunno man that seems pretty mean. I don't think you meant it that way but it does.
PS These kids are real not theoretical - the first one got admitted to Harvard but chose Stanford. The second one is applying to schools this year.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||Alum?||
If you ever want to do alum interviews of local kids, let me know (unless you already do!). There are some really amazing HS kids around here.
It is also often cheaper for a low SES kid to go to Harvard than to UM.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||This is a fantastic book||
And should be required reading for everyone on this thread interested in the topic.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||Pretty Much the Opposite of the NYTimes' take on it||
Which was much more balanced.
Sometimes I think that this blog is the only place where the words "sports" and "journalism" genuinely belong in the same sentence.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||You don't lack the grace||
But you do lack the facts. A wealthy kid can afford to screw around in a major where a bootstrap kid cannot. You won't find so many art history majors with mechanics dads, but if your folks can pop for grad school someplace maybe you can swing art history.
And really what is meant by a "competitive" major - have you got anything other than your own prejudices to show that working class kids are not working as hard as you?
And you think sociology is easy? Not if you do it right.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Thank you sir||
This is a pet issue of mind as I came from regular folks and went to a school full of posh people. And that was back when posh was 6200 a year not 62000.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Oh dear||
People who think the money is a non issue are less likely to have any. The premium is $120k you could invest in grad school. The NU option leaves you rolling in debt for years compared to the UM option
|1 year 44 weeks ago||I agree||
Think of the extra 120 to Northwestern as money you would no longer have for grad school
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Michigan is better in every way||
I used to be on the Northwestern faculty so I am pretty confident in saying that although it may be a bit "posher" than UM, on average UM is the better school.

You can tell the race of the shooter from listening to their gunshots? Do tell.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Hoo boy||
Dude it's not because folks are BLACK that they need remediation - it's because they've had a pisspoor education or they have learning disabilities or or or....
|1 year 46 weeks ago||Education thoughts||
I'd say the high schools are better here than in South Lyon, if you are ambitious (sends lots of kids to elite schools), although this is likely to change eventually. I have a niece and nephew raising a family in South Lyon, they get more for their money in terms of real estate but less in terms of culture, walkable "town" vibe, etc.
|1 year 48 weeks ago||Doesn't make sense to me||
Having sufficient capacity for the strongest surges would be like building a 250.000 seat Big House. It would be expensive, and Most of the time it would be an underutilized resource; and prevent us from making more important investments (coaching).
|1 year 48 weeks ago||Or me!||
My husband thinks I am nuts and football is fascist, but my son and nephew are co-dependent.
|1 year 49 weeks ago||Why||
Oh why are you giving him the airtime?

You will enjoy it!

Piss on the media if you want. If he did it just for the story why doesn't it happen every time a player goes down in every game?

The buyouts happen because the candidate are risk-averse: you're taking a chance when you move, and if things don't work out, you'd be worse off. So you get a better quality candidate if you offer a buyout in the contract.
|2 years 3 days ago||Head hunters are standard||
Every major position here (dean, president, etc.) has been done with the aid of a recruiting agency to handle logistics, help negotiate contracts, etc
|2 years 5 days ago||Hey maybe I still owe||
I realized I bet the pollyanna on Minny-UM that Devin Gardner would not throw an interception then forgot about it.
Technically I won that bet. Because of poor Shane, Devin did not throw any interceptions.
However, I will pay up because, you know, lemons. Money goes to Keep Growing Detroit.
|2 years 5 days ago||I was asking that New Zealand chick||
I hear she's a long-time lurker here.
|2 years 5 days ago||That's a different question though.||
That's "when do we get a replacement," not "why can't we fire a coach as fast as other people fire THEIR coaches."
|2 years 5 days ago||We call my daughter the Wolverine||
Just behind her back though ;-)
If the question can be extended to Detroit-area sports in general, we named our cat Princess Tayshaun
|2 years 2 weeks ago||Just so we are clear on this||
Harvard's endowment is in the billions I think; it would not substantially change its bank balance by adding "media money" (and yes, "insane" would be the word for media money directed at public interest in Ivy football).
Did you actually READ the article? It describes the change in Harvard athletics as being driven by the school's policy to offer free rides to EVERY student with a family income less than $60,000. This is not a device to buy athletes, it is offered to every single student with that income profile.
Yeah sure money corrupts; in this case, however, the money is being used to offer all kinds of amazing students an opportunity at a debt-free education. At the "big boy" schools the football players get this kind of deal but not the future physicists, teachers, novelists, etc.
|2 years 3 weeks ago||Because radio||
Honest to pete, even if everyone agrees the guy can't leave fast enough, how can a poor "radio journalist" cover his minutes if he doesn't fabricate a controversy?
Someone has to be the idiot on sports chat shows or there's nothing to watch/listen to.
|2 years 3 weeks ago||Who said that? nobody!||

It could presumably be DISproven by releasing DBs emails of that period.
|2 years 9 weeks ago||Why in the world||
Do you think Ross is such a complete idiot as to continue to support a failing director and coach because they're, like, his pals and because he said (before Shanegate) he would? Are YOU that dim well then probably he isn't either.
|2 years 9 weeks ago||Not this||
Sorry. Fans supporting athletics are nice, but they are not why we're here. Why Brandon matters is because he reflects poorly on the primary (academic) mission of the school. If the non-U fans were mad and signed your petition, but no one within the university or alums cared, this would already be over by now.
|2 years 9 weeks ago||Really money does NOTHING||
unless you have a crapton more of it than everybody else. We have a lot, but we can't dominate other elite programs with compensation. A big ego would presumably rather choose something to turn around that will not be a stinkbomb for the foreseeable future.

If I lose I'll give 30 to Keeping Growing Detroit, which provides urban gardening services in the city (and employs at least one huge Wolverines fan).

He is too OT for an in-season thread.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||Hey get your Groupons here for Saturday's game||
No kidding I got an "Amazon Local" offer this morning (think Groupon with an Amazon logo slapped on it) for a "special package" for the Miami game
$65 includes ticket hot dog beverage t-shirt and program
which, as we all know, is WAY LESS THAN LOYAL SEASON TICKET HOLDERS PAY.
So, yes, we are at Desperation Defcon 6 or something.
Really, Dave? YOU ARE COUPONING OUR FOOTBALL GAME?

I am very sorry for your loss and send my best to your family esp your mom.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||I agree||
If you don't have a compelling interest in business for its own sake (as opposed to for the sake of the salary you hope to get), I'm good with taking any other hard-core major, going out into the world of work, coming back later to get an MBA should you feel the need.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||Ok I dont think you passed the stats class||
It is not easier to break a curve in a smaller class, it's harder. Just now I'm getting ready to grade a class with only 20 students in it, which means I only have five students who will get a full "excellent"/A.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||Ross prereqs||
Hi there and welcome
|2 years 30 weeks ago||Desirable ....not!||
Oh for heaven's sake, if "total applications" is the right indicator of "desirability" than McDonald's is the best restaurant in the universe.
A better measure would be acceptance rate (i.e. Stanford's is about 5.6 ot 5.7 and Harvard's is about 5.9).
|2 years 33 weeks ago||Read the Gilovich article||
Before you say that
|2 years 33 weeks ago||So is the hot hand a defensive phenomenon||
I mean is it driven entirely by defense? Is it possible that defensive reaction is driven by an (incorrect) belief in the hot hand? Could the hot hand in other words both be true (as a defensively driven empirically phenomenon) and not true (as a purely offensive matter)? So all the researchers are right?
|2 years 33 weeks ago||Please describe said flaws||
I'm not being sarcastic. I am very familiar with the initial article and find the endogenous argument compelling. I am not certain that "sabermetricians" typically use models that account for endogeneity, and am happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.
|2 years 34 weeks ago||Donors yesterday||
There was a pre-pre-sale yesterday for athletic donors. By 9:30am the lower seats in the corner (at $90) were already back to the 45th row.
|2 years 36 weeks ago||Is it genuine?||
Well it would be nice but how do we know it is not a deliberate pseudonym?
|2 years 37 weeks ago||Cool; and a follow-up question||
Given that one-seeds often enough play other one-seeds in the final, is perhaps the likeilihood of of a one-seed winning understated? If East 1-seed plays West 1-seed, the winning percentage for a given one-seed team is 50%, although there is a 100% chance of one-seed winning the game.
|2 years 37 weeks ago||Breathe deeply||
7 upsets in 23 years = 7/(23*4) = 7.6% chance.
92.4% chance we win, 7.6% chance THEY win which is a little better than 12 to 1 odds. Those are pretty good odds!
|2 years 37 weeks ago||How do you know they are better||
Before the tournament?
|2 years 38 weeks ago||NotYourMom and son||
Whose mom I actually am.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||Well since you have requested it.||
That would help us tease apart whether this is really about demographics or really about some states being basketball state
So my difficulty is the implication that some states do well because of "demographics" (.e.g race) and others because they are "basketball states."
That is, "controlling for" the presence of black players in order to determine the remaining effect (that is, removing the effects of demographics from the rest of the analysis).
Also I think perhaps you have the numerator and denominator mixed up.
You are proposing:
# of players regardless of race
"Total Black population"
Could that really be what you meant?
|2 years 38 weeks ago||Really? Really?||
Did not one but two posters just suggest that the figures are distorted by the presence of actual black players who should be removed so we could calculate whether a state is a "real" basketball state?
Words escape me.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||Congrats!||
