|38 weeks 6 days ago||OK, here is my selfish problem with this change......||
When January 2nd is a work day I am pretty much screwed out of watching the second playoff game. Getting up at 5am after watching a game that doesn't end until almost midnight is tough on this old man. When they are NYE I know I always have the next day off and I can freely eat, drink, and be merry while I watch the games.
This is also my problem with the championship game being on a Monday night. I mean, seriously. Can't we find a way to put that game on a weekend day??
Old man musings, I guess......
|40 weeks 5 days ago||I was there with my wife and two of our friends.....||
It had rained like hell they day or two before the game. I mean, torrential rain. Some of the roads leading from the hotel where we were staying to State College were closed due to flooding. The parking areas were a total mud hole.
The Lion fans were so damn cocky before that game. Once the ass kicking started the only sounds you could hear were the hitting on the field and the screaming from the few thousand Wolverine fans.
I have been to a lot of home and away games. I have seen some incredible finishes. But to this point, this is the best game I have ever seen in person. I still get chills thinking about it.
|41 weeks 6 days ago||I was at that '94 game in South Bend.....||

My buddy and I actually met Lou Holtz before the game as he was walking to the stadium. He stopped for a minute or two and shook our hands and wished us luck. He is a little quirky, but he is a pretty good guy.

I think there are more announcements coming. I simply can't believe that Warde and his staff doesn't see the same schedules that we do. This makes little sense without flipping the MSU series back to being opposite of OSU. Perhaps this was the impetus to make that happen.
I hope that is the case. If not, we really got screwed. Hard to see the upside here.
|42 weeks 17 hours ago||My first Tigers game in person was in 1977.||
I was 9 and we were at home playing the Royals. Fidrych wasn't pitching, but he was out in left field before the game during warm-ups. My dad got me a game program and when we saw him we joined the masses that went to the wall to try and get his autograph. He was very gracious and stayed there until he had signed autographs for everyone. He signed my game program.
Oh, and the Tigers won. It was an awesome day.

Football national title; Woodson wins the Heisman; Michigan beats Duke in basketball; Men's hockey wins the national title; Red Wings win their second straight Cup (of course, first in '97, second in '98).
And to top it off for me, I attended every single home football game and the epic win at Penn State. I also attended the regional hockey finals at Yost, which still ranks as the best sporting event I have ever attended in person.

"Happy spouse, happy house". This way the onus is on both to take each other's happiness into account.
While we are talking marital advice, I don't think couples truly understand how devasting financially a divorce can be. I am not suggesting that everyone should enter marriage with a pessimistic attitude, but everyone should understand that if the marriage eventually does not work out, the financial devastation can be insurmountable. I know first hand how tough it can be. My first marriage didn't work and it killed me financially. Luckily I quickly found my soul mate and we have been together for 20 years. But, the financial pain took many years to recover from. And even now, am I fully recovered? I lost years of being able to "plan for the future" because I had to settle marital debts.
Sure, divorce comes with all kinds of pain: custody issues, mutual friends, families, not to mention the pain of ending a relationship that you had expected to last forever. However, most of that gets better with time and, usually, doesn't have lingering effects. However, the financial devastation may never truly go away.
I know that there are pre-marriage counseling classes that some couples take, but I don't know that they ever touch on the financial hardships that can come with a divorce.
"We want prenup" Of course, I don't necessarily mean that, but I think too many young couples go into something like marraige rather blindly. And since nearly 50% of all marriages end in divorce, the odds are pretty good that your young happy married life will likely come to an end at some point.
Who needs a drink?
|1 year 18 weeks ago||The solution, of course......||
Is to marry someone that likes sports almost as much as you do. My wife likes hockey (college and NHL) and football (college and NFL). In fact, she will watch games even if I am not at home. It helps that she is a huge UM fan. She is more excited to watch all of the bowl games that are on tomorrow than I am!
Perhaps I just got lucky, though.

When I first read that Bo was retiring after the 1990 Rose Bowl Game (1989 season) I got a little misty. I was in my Junior year and this announcement hit me out of nowhere. But in that era, unless you were an "insider" you didn't know until you read it in print. Took my breath away.

that after having season tickets for 23 years as an alum (and four as a student) I decided not to renew this year. I can also tell you that the general public season ticket holders have received the same letters and e-mails as the students with the same tone. First the deadline for paying my "preferred seat donation" came and went. I thought that was it, but no, it was not. I received three extensions to pay this fee, one of them was a second hard copy letter. To top that off, just last week I received one final e-mail stating that I still had time to renew my season tickets if I so desired.
Am very curious to see how this plays out.
|3 years 1 week ago||My biggest problem with this schedule.....||
is that the national championship game will always be on a Monday night. Unlike the national championship basketball game, the national championship football game will take three and a half hours to complete. This completely sucks for us working folks (and students) that have to get up early on Tuesday. I know that having it on a Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon would conflict with the NFL Playoffs, but there has to be a better solution than a Monday night.
Maybe I just need to move to the Pacific time zone......

|4 years 51 weeks ago||There is a fairly easy way||
to remedy the conference champion issue. Simply eliminate the conference championship games and have each conference team play one or two more conference games during the season. This is how conference champions were determined for decades before the SEC instituted the conference championship game.
Is this perfect? Not exactly because you could still end up with tied conference records for teams that might not have played one another during the season. But, again, this was an issue for decades and various tie breakers were used to select the champion.
The point is, without the conference championship game you are less likely to end up with the scenario you outlined above.
Ultimately it will be difficult to come up with a system that works well for only a four or six team playoff. If the decision is to shorten the regular season by a couple of games and go to eight teams, or even sixteen(!!!) teams you could have slots for "at large" teams, so teams that deserve to be in the playoff are not left out.

Get off your high horse. If you are a head coach at a high profile D-1 school and want to keep your job, you have to win. And in the SEC, if you want to win, you need to play by the established rules. Could he have taken the high road and done it the "right way"? Sure. But it is likely he would have lost several more games and it would have cost him his job.
It is hard to be a leader if you are putting your career in jeopardy. Why should he play role of martyr?
|6 years 15 weeks ago||This....||
is spot on. You play by the rules of the league you coach in. If you think U of M would let him oversign like he did in the SEC you are crazy.

|6 years 26 weeks ago||With the time change happening this weekend.....||
It is pretty much guaranteed it will be dark by 5:30pm for Illinois. I know they have brought in portable lights for other games, but this was mostly for the "twilight" hours, correct? I know the permanent lights are coming, but I don't think they have been installed as of yet.
I know in past games the portable lights did not offer the best illumination on the field and often created weird shadows and such. Will this have an affect on game time?
For the record I would be in favor of a noon kick off. My three hour each way drive makes 3:30pm games killer since I like to be tailgating as early as possible!
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Absolutely!||
I absolutely remember rowing in the student section. That was during my tenure as a UM undergrad. It was pretty cool. We also did popcorn, where people would randomly jump as if they were popcorn kernels in a hot pan. I can't remember the game, but there was one occasion where the entire stadium did popcorn. It was awesome.
I also miss the rolls of TP and the marshmallows. Yeah, I know the marshmallows could be dangerous if they hit a player in the face, but it was damn cool. I also thought it was cool to see hundreds of rolls of TP thrown from the top of the student section after every touchdown. Messy? Yep. Childish? You bet. Waste of University resources (since most rolls were stolen from the dorm restrooms)? Absolutely. But it did provide a neat affect.
During my freshman year we were allowed to bring coolers(!!!) into the stadium for games. Can you imagine that today?

I would agree with these suggestions. The BW3 off of Sternberg always has a large Michigan crowd on game days. Plus there are a gazillion TV's with lots of other games on as well. The waitstaff there is easy on the eyes, too.

Perhaps this is simply about the fundamental difference between men and women regarding sexuality, but in a strange way he makes a good point. Can a woman be around 53 naked athletic men and NOT be aroused by any of them????
|6 years 32 weeks ago||It's a difficult subject....||
On the one hand, if women aren't allowed in men's locker room after games then their male counterparts should also not be allowed in. Not ever having been a player in a locker room after a big game I can only imagine how it must be like to have reporters leaching around the locker room while you, the player, is just trying to clean up and decompress. I realize it has been a part of sports for, like, ever, but as a player it has to be weird.
That being said, you are spot on with your comment regarding the opposite never being allowed to happen. Not that there are many women's team sports that would draw that kind of coverage, but are men allowed in the women's locker room, say, after the WNBA championship? Of course, maybe men don't want to be in the locker room after the WNBA championship.
|6 years 32 weeks ago||I remember that pass to Roundtree.....||
Initially I was thinking it was poorly thrown. However, when my buddy and I saw the replay it was very catchable. He should have caught it. It was juset salt in the wound that we also missed the FG.
I also agree about the points left on the field. This was a close win that didn't really need to be nearly as close as it was. I think that is why Denard made that comment when he came out for that last drive, which was something along the lines of "let's put these guys away....we have let them hang around too long".
it is exciting to watch this offense progress.
|6 years 32 weeks ago||I don't know...||

I think Brian's point was that in the 3-3-5 Martin would be a bit too large to be an effective DE. His size is more suited to playing in the middle. In the 4-2-5 Martin would be playing next to Campbell at one DT position. In the 3-3-5, if Martin were to play on the outside, he would be expected to play more of the DE role where his size could be a disadvantage.
In other words, Brian's thought was that Martin and Campbell would be rotating at the DT position rather than have your two biggest monsters on the field at the same time.
|7 years 9 weeks ago||In my opinion...||
the team has to win at least 7 games this year. I actually felt that way before yesterday, but I am more staunch in my belief today. Really, the team is young but there should be no excuse not to win 7 games (not including bowl) this fall.
I can't take many more negative headlines, regardless of where they come from. I have bled blue my entire life and to watch this program in such a downward spiral is killing me. I support RR but the man has to win. Period.
|7 years 9 weeks ago||The thing is, though....||
it goes beyond just media pressure. There are plenty of "uninformed" alums that are becoming disenchanted as well. These are the alums that maybe casually follow football and simply know that U of M has been good at this for many years and right now they aren't. They also know that the football program has never had these kind of NCAA allegations before and the only common denomiator seems to be the new coach.
Brandon may not buckle to media pressure but he almost has to pay attention to the alums, even if they are uninformed.
Many believe that winning will help to end the backlash, and that may be true. I just think, from the sounds of things, the winning will have to come sooner rather than later. Again, I hope I am wrong because I can see what RR is building. I just wonder if the casual fan will have enough patience.
|7 years 9 weeks ago||What really pissed me off yesterday...||
was that when I got completely fed up with Shawn and Terp and Huge I flipped to NPR to get away from it all. But alas, when they did their "local" segment at the beginning of the hour, even they mentioned the "5 major sanctions against the U of M football program".
Seriously....NPR? Dammit man, what the hell can I actually listen to on the radio without wanting to poke my eyes out???
|7 years 9 weeks ago||In regards to FB&HW.....||
I do like the show in the morning. It is usually pretty funny. However, their RR comments this morning were ridiculous and uninformed.
That being said, the show I listened to on my way home from work yesterday, which was far worse than Huge or FB&HW, was Shawn and Terp on 96.1. Those two idiots are completely clueless. Man, I was so pissed listening to those guys yesterday I wanted to drive to GR and kick their asses.
I keep telling myself that this pain will lessen with time, but man, it is a gaping wound right now. I am starting to get the feeling that if RR doesn't win at least 8 games this year he will be gone. I hope I am wrong, but it keeps getting uglier.
|7 years 9 weeks ago||Rowing....||
Yes, we used to row in the student section. We also used to do popcorn, where students would simply jump up and down randomly. I can remember one game where the entire stadium was doing popcorn!
I also miss the days when you could actually bring coolers into the stadium. They banned this after my freshman. While alcohol was technically not allowed security never checked. Can you imagine bringing in coolers of beer today? Damn, that was f-ing awesome.
|7 years 13 weeks ago||1989||
I was a junior at U of M in 1989. In fact, while the championship game was amazing, as was the party on South U, I actually enjoyed the semifinal game with Illinois even more. It was just as dramatic and Illinois had beaten us twice during the regular season.
I was actually staying up north in the Pigeon River Country of the lower peninsula. My aquatic entomology class was on a weekend field study trip. The entire class stayed at my professor's parent's cabin. Before we went to the cabin we stopped at a party store and stocked up. We all got pretty wasted during the game and screamed out the fight song all night. My professor was pretty cool.
I am mostly a child of 80's Michigan hoops. I really got hooked with the Roy Tarpley/Richard Rellford team. The era culminated with that '89 championship. Still one of the best weekends of my life.

My buddy and I will be in Iowa City for the game on Saturday. We are looking forward to the trip. I do have a question for you regarding game day parking. I realize that it is a night game but we would like to be parked early, probably around 9am or 10am. Can you offer any parking area suggestions?
I was there for a game a few years ago and we parked at a placed called the Duck Pond. We had fun but it was quite hostile. Does this place still exist? It seems to me I remember reading that it was now closed for business.
Any suggestions you could offer would be much appreciated. Thank you.

That is our final open date on the schedule.
|8 years 11 weeks ago||I would normally not like this move. But......||
I like where it comes on the schedule. If this were game two of the season it would piss me off a bit. However, by mid-October this team will have the usual bumps and bruises and having this game at that time might afford the team the opportunity to rest some folks to recover from some of these minor injuries to get ready for Penn State the following week. Yes, I know we need to win the game and after App. State and Toledo there is no longer such a thing as a "gimme". However, we should be gelling a bit by this time in the season and we should, SHOULD, be able to put this team away in the first half and allow our starters to rest a bit for PSU.
On the other hand, lose this game, and we will all be lining up to jump from the top of the new luxury boxes.
