Low 11s is good but not great

Low 11s is good but not great in high school.  It doesn't really matter, however.  Evans has great acceleration and wiggle, and that's more important than top straight line speed.

I don't believe I ever talked

I don't believe I ever talked "smack" about substantially most legal and disciplinary issues at other schools with the exception of PSU and Sandusky.

Also, how is supporting a second chance in this situation akin to being a "head in the sand homer"?  From a roster perspective, Grant Perry is expendable.  It is not someone for whom the coaches would even remotely want to fall on the proverbial sword.

I am fairly certain if this happened to a regular student, the student wouldn't be dismissed from school.  Admittedly, he or she is not on scholarship, but that's essentially what would happen if Grant Perry were kicked off the team.

Football players are held to a higher standard and should be.  At the same time, kids do stupid things all the time and kicking them out of school for something like this seems excessive.

Yeah, I remember that.  I

Yeah, I remember that.  I think some believe they will lose some fictional moral high ground vis-a-vis other fan bases.  Frankly, I don't care about measuring moral **** sizes.

I trust Harbaugh given his past history on player discipline.  From my perspective only, I don't believe this incident warrants kicking Grant Perry off.

Who cares?  As an alum, I

Who cares?  As an alum, I want the program to do the right thing.  If keeping Grant Perry catches flak so be it, but I don't mind giving second chances for something like this.

If it was more serious, I would be entirely supportive of kicking him off the team.  It's not about talent, and it's not like Grant Perry is essential to the depth of the WR corps (far from it).

I'm hoping Grant Perry learns from his mistake, and once he graduates, I will proud to count him among our alums.

It is really easy to get

It is really easy to get cited for resisting arrest.  Harbaugh gave a second chance to Minick for DUI.  I'm not sure why he wouldn't give one to Grant Perry for this.

Resisting arrest is serious,

Resisting arrest is serious, but I don't think it warrants kicking a player off a team.  People make much more serious mistakes and get second chances.  I don't see why Grant Perry shouldn't get one.

That's probably an accurate That's probably an accurate statement for me too. I actually don't hate either school per se, but I do maintain a haughty attitude towards each school.
I respect their football I respect their football teams. That's it.
I don't. Despite recent I don't. Despite recent success, still see MSU as a cow college and as a little brother. Arrogant, yes. However, I don't give a shit.
I immediately looked at their

I immediately looked at their commits and targets to see if there was any potential for poaching.  Recruiting is an obsession.

I wouldn't call this

I wouldn't call this "shenanigans" per se.  No other conference has this rule, and the SEC finds this to be a competitive disadvantage vis-a-vis other conferences.

It is just more a reflection of how hypocritical the SEC can be.  They claim to enact rules for the betterment of athletes, coaches, schools and integrity of the game.  Yet, they complain about the same rules the very moment they are adversely affected by them.

Trey Burke was also very

Trey Burke was also very close to entering the draft for a similar reason.  He was not sure if he reached peak value at the time.  Trey was also a younger prospect without any significant injuries.

There was absolutely no guarantee that DJ would increase his value in any respect with another year under Belein.  If prospects always progressed linearly, every Belein prospect would never even question staying through their senior years.

The comments that subtlely imply DJ made the wrong decision are asinine.  DJ is likely going to make millions of dollars.  He can come back and get his degree, and he can still develop while trying to fulfill his lifelong dream.  No, he is not a guaranteed first round pick, but there is absolutely no way to predict that he would improve his stock by staying.

Wouldn't say universal.  I

Wouldn't say universal.  I defended the decision, but I do agree that many of the comments sounded like sour grapes.

Moreover, Harbaugh is the

Moreover, Harbaugh is the reason for the new rule.

The number of negative hot

The number of negative hot takes for a not so young player in NBA terms with an injury history making a decision that will in all likelihood result in him making a couple million dollars is perplexing.

I think Quinn is absolutely

I think Quinn is absolutely right on his take.  It's relatively similar to Mitch McGary if he had decided to stay despite the suspension.  McGary would have been 23 at the time of the draft, had injury issues, and may not necessarily increased his value as a prospect.

Beilein is playing against a

Beilein is playing against a stacked deck.  Basketball recruiting would make bagmen in the SEC blush.  UM basketfall fans would have to be willing to overlook quite a bit if they want to recruit with the Caliparis of the college basketball world.

Outside of a handful of

Outside of a handful of prospects, the NBA draft is always a crapshoot.  Name one recent draft year where more than half of the first rounders became decent rotational players.

DJ is not ready.  However, this may be the time when his stock is the highest.

Early second rounders usually

Early second rounders usually get contracts as well, and many for more money than first rounders.  DJ is turning 22 next year; he is not a young NBA prospect by any means.

That, plus his injury history, his decision was probably the best one for him.  There is no guarantee that he would improve or move up in the draft. In fact, I have my doubts that he would have improved significantly enough to get into the top 20.  If I were in his shoes, I would stay in the draft too.

Part of the issue is that

Part of the issue is that Hoke focused most of his recruiting around the Midwest.  There were the occasional out of region gems like Jabrill Peppers.  However, for the most part, his skill players were not from Florida, California and elsewhere.

The best skill players are outside the Midwest.  Yes, there are some like DPJ who come out of Detroit and some from Ohio.  However, Michigan absolutely needs to recruit nationally.

Hoke and Borges were forced

Hoke and Borges were forced to use Funchess as a WR.  He was one of the worst blockers I have ever seen at TE.

I agree that the quote is

I agree that the quote is being blown out of proportion a bit.  At the same time, I do think Harbaugh priortizes speed a bit more than the previous regime.  I don't think Csonte York or Jaron Dukes would have ever received an offer from the current regime.

Harbaugh also recruits more skill position numbers than Hoke did.  QB is the best example.  Where Hoke was comfortable promising Shane Morris that a QB would not be recruited his or the subsequent year.  There is absolutely no way that Harbaugh would ever promise that and in fact promises the exact opposite.

WR is another example.  Hoke probably would have been content with having just DPJ and one or two other WRs given Kekoa and McDoom are already on the roster.  However, Harbaugh was obviously not content with the depth of skill players and basically feasted on as many athletic WRs he could get his hands on.

I strongly prefer Harbaugh's approach.

Good points.  You may be

Good points.  You may be right.

I thought at the time McGary would have improved with one more year of Belein under him but for the fact that I don't believe in hindsight he had the requisite focus.  To me, he just needed a relatively consistent midrange jumper, and he would be worth a top 15 pick.

To be fair, Da'Mario Jones

To be fair, Da'Mario Jones and Drake Harris also had speed, but they just didn't develop like Chesson did (or got derailed by injuries) .  I recall Darboh having a 4.5 in high school, and his combine 40 showed that he wasn't slow by any means.

To me, it's more a combination of things: not recruiting enough speedy WRs to account for hit rate and not adequately developing them.  Harbaugh is thankfully addressing both issues.

Caleb Swanigan will never be Caleb Swanigan will never be a lottery pick despite being the B10 player of year two years in a row. If you are not a sure fire pick after three years on campus, you will likely not be after a fourth. DJ also had injury issues in the past. He is going to be a late first or early second either this year or the next. Either way, he's getting a contract. Caris was still relatively young when he made his decision and potentially could have played himself into the lottery. Injuries derailed that. McGary would have been a lottery pick (if he didn't smoke pot and played one more year instead of having to sit out) but he had to weigh what teams would think if he didn't substantially improve by the time he was 23 (when he would be available if he had stayed at Michigan). DJ similarly is not that young for a NBA prospect. He's going to be 22 next year.
As much as I want to see DJ As much as I want to see DJ back, I don't think he will improve his stock all that much by doing so. It's doubtful he plays himself into the lottery. He should do what's best for him. I just don't see how moving maybe a few picks up in the draft really does anything for him.
Hot takes lean towards a few

Hot takes lean towards a few mintues of video.

Not even one practice.  We

Not even one practice.  We basically watch a few minutes of highlights.

"Way better" is an absurd

"Way better" is an absurd assumption to make given the limited amount of video.  Harbaugh and company chart every throw.  They will know who the right QB will be.  Starting a QB prematurely (or when they are not ready) can also kill development.  E.g. Devin Gardner

Nick Baumgardner, who actually witnessed the practices, basically said Speight is still better at this point.

There is still an opportunity for Peters to seize the job, but I can't see how a "way better" hot take is even possible.

Speight was not the issue.

Speight was not the issue.  It was a line that couldn't push for a first down to give the QB a break.

If it really was just a QB issue, then every team in the B10 should just give up because I don't see any Andrew Lucks in the league.

If it was simply arm talent

If it was simply arm talent and potential, Shane Morris would have won the job over Rudock.

He wasn't fired.  He was laid

He wasn't fired.  He was laid off.  Big difference.

No, I don't celebrate firings.  His job was provide "analysis" or more aptly hot takes to generate more eyes on the television.  He, along with Finebaum, are obvious trolls.

His take on Jabrill Peppers was out of line, and if I were him, I would apologize.  He also deserves criticism for those particular comments about Peppers.  However, he didn't cost Jabrill any money whatsoever as teams are well aware of the context and what a diluted sample actually means.

All the celebrating and literally childish hissy fits over anything trollish literally just feeds more trollish behavior.

I agree.  There is a lot of

I agree.  There is a lot of room to criticize, but I feel fans (not just Michigan fans) take a team's honor too serously rather than just recognizing what the trolls are trying to do.

I didn't say anybody needs to

I didn't say anybody needs to defend them either.  It's the fact that people are actually celebrating a layoff.

This is not endemic to

This is not endemic to Michigan fans, but seriously, people need thicker skins.  There is no need to throw hissy fits over every Kannell or Finebaum comment.  We are not charged with defending the honor of Michigan football.  It will thrive regardless of the occasional d-bag comment.

Stupid to celebrate a layoff.

Stupid to celebrate a layoff.

Taking this a bit too Taking this a bit too seriously? I don't mind giving kids a second chance depending on the transgression. It sounds like Dantonio made a very bad call with respect to this particular player. For some reason, the past year has been very unkind to Sparty. I don't like Dantonio because he seems like a curmudgeonly d-bag, but I don't believe he is Art Briles either.
They looked good. It always They looked good. It always nice to do some transitive property exercises where I project how awesome Michigan is going to be since they beat "X" team. Or maybe I need to stop drinking.
Agreed. Life is not fair Agreed. Life is not fair sometimes. In the grand spectrum of life, no one should really give a shit whether a team is under or over seeded by one or two lines.
Yes, because Michigan bars in Yes, because Michigan bars in foreign countries always stay in business, and things never change.
That's not a humblebrag. That's not a humblebrag. Don't be a dick
No. No.
Following on Twitter is

Following Twitter accounts is essentially what mgoblog does on a regular basis and part of the reason why you joined this blog.  Hence, indirectly, you are participating in the "stalking" that you condemn.

Seriously, people...this is not a national crisis.  Yes, don't tweet at recruits.  However, there is no reason to go insane and freak out when people do (and people will continue to do so).  Every fanbase will have people who care too much and tweet.

The recruits are also not dumb to believe that all the assholes reside with one fanbase.  If anything, I'm offended by the sanctimonious posters who believe recruits are too stupid to realize (or eventually realize) that no fanbase is perfect.

There is.  Many recruits want

There is.  Many recruits want attention.  Again, I don't tweet recruits.

However, people need to calm down.  Recruits are a lot smarter than what some on this board give them credit for.  Do you honestly believe recruits don't (or will not) realize every fanbase has a bunch of idiots, sycophants, and asses?

I don't tweet recruits.  At

I don't tweet recruits.  At the same time, I don't think tweeting at recruits will ever stop nor is it likely the determining factor in any recruit's decision.

Every fanbase has its knuckleheads.  I believe substantially all of the recruits understand this (and would understand this after some explanation).  I give them more credit than some of the people on this board.

I understand your point and I understand your point and agree that ultimately a head coach and AD need to take responsibility. Would your opinion change if Dantonio immediately reported the same to Hollis once he found out what was happening? My opinion probably would be different if it was a one-off situation and Dantonio did do the right thing when confronted. As much as I hate Dantonio as a football coach, I don't necessarily want to view him as Art Brilesque either.
Who knows without more facts. Who knows without more facts. To me, Penn State football was clearly an institutional failure and deserved every bit (and more) of punishment and scrutiny that came its way (it's the original reason why I have a mgoblog account to comment). I haven't read enough about the gymnastics program to comment, but with MSU football, it's not clear whether it was an institutional or not. It doesn't look good, but I hope this isn't anything like PSU/Baylor.
Took a two week break from

Took a two week break from general recruiting news for 2018.  Today, my addiction gets fed again.

This will probably not end

This will probably not end well for the MSU football program, but I probably want more facts before I condemn the entire program.  No program is completely clean with outstanding citizens who can do no wrong.  However, it would be pretty sick if a staffer was covering up for the players if the allegations are true.

Same.  My wife and I

Same.  My wife and I completely forgot.
