His was a welcome voice…

His was a welcome voice. Thanks for everything, Ace. I hope things get better, friend.

Game 6, 1986

I was 13 at the time. When Bob Stanley threw the wild pitch that let the tying run in, I was pretty horrified. When Buckner let the ball go through his legs, I lost it. I sobbed like a little girl with a skinned knee.

My father is a pretty stoic guy. He was reading something and I saw him glance down at me as I began trying to dehydrate myself with tears. He let me go for about 15 minutes and didn't say a word. Then he nudged me with his foot and said, "That's enough. It's a new day tomorrow."

That was the last time I ever cried over a sporting event. Hell, that might have been the last time I ever cried. After that, sorrow was just turned into rage.

Maybe 10-15 years ago, after a particularly painful loss that not only ruined my weekend, it ruined the following week and the weekend after THAT....I started thinking about how envious I was of people who weren't sports fans. THEY didn't let a critical fumble make them miserable. It dawned on me that sports could be a bad bargain. When you get to the point where the losses hurt more than the wins feel good, you've entered yourself into a very poor arrangement.

Bill Parcells once said that after the wins, he only felt relief. There was no joy. Then there was anxiety and pain until the next game. If they lost, he was devestated.

That's no way to live your life.

After that, I turned the volume down on sports. I like it. I just don't let it dictate my mood.

FOIA

Not to be pedantic, but FOIA only pertains to federal government. The guiding principle here is the Michigan public records law.,

Two most disappointing losses

Two most disappointing losses were MSU two years ago and OSU last year.

I honestly thought we outplayed the opponent in both games. The Michigan State game was more even than OSU. Without the two interceptions, we beat OSU easily.

Argh.

Two dogs here

I have a pitbull and a flat-coated retriever.

The pittie adores children. Complete lovebug and seems to understand that small children are fragile.

The flattie can be a bit more rambunctious. He's also not crazy about little kids. I had a friend (with three small children) petsit him one weekend. Bo went over to my friend for ear-scritches and her young son pushed Bo off the couch.

About an hour later, Bo went by the son (who was watching TV) and pissed on his head.

That's a dog telling the kid that he's not going to be pushed around. It's something to keep an eye on. Bo will tolerate kids, but he's not as good with them as the pittie.

Fentanyl

People use Fentanyl as an end-of-life medicine. So, someone dies and they usually have extras. Those get sold and others use fentanyl to make "Oxycontin." <-- note the parenthesis.

People take the "Oxy" thinking they're taking pharma-grade Oxy and OD (which is apparently absurdly easy to do with fentanyl).

There are stories of little kids dying from contact with USED fentanyl patches.

The Ref is a good one....

...but I have to go with Three Days of the Condor.

USC

I can't figure out why they aren't better than their record. they have NFL talent at almost every position. they don't have a ton of depth because of the sanctions and the smaller classes a couple of years back, but there is a ton of talent everywhere.

It shouldn't be that hard to find a halfway decent coach who can get them to 10 or 11 wins.

"Plastics."

"Plastics."

win

I'll take it. Some nailbiting early, but no booger eating.

Win!

Ugh...beats

Beats are such garbage that they've added metal components whose only job is to make them heavier...seeming like better headphones.

Sony MDR-7506 are about $99 and are excellent headphones. If you want to drop $300 on Sennheisers or those Bose noise cancelling cans, they're TERRIFIC headphones. That's a bit more money than I have to spend, but if your budget can handle it, they are great.

10

That first album was amazing. It took me a few years to get around to Nirvana. I was much more in the PJ camp at the start.

Alternative music became a parody of itself after awhile, but those first few years were really something special.

Clemson

Clemson is one of the dirtiest programs in the country.  They ran Ken Hatfield out of the program because he WOULDNT cheat.

So young...

My freshman year in college....

inexcusable

Consdering how dire the circumstances are, it's inexcusable for the officials to be so random on calls/non-calls.

Eliminate the idiotic rule and just allow refs to call a personal foul. No reason for a bad call to linger until the next game.

My dog is here beside me

My dog did not get hit by a car today. I did not bury my father today. No one I know and love was told that they have cancer today.

My team lost a game. They will lose more. Thankfully, they will win more than they lose. And today's loss will just make that those wins that much sweeter.

Sleep well, friends.

He's one of us.
You win as a

He's one of us.

You win as a team. You lose as a team. The wins are sweeter because we did them together. We soften the losses by comforting one another.

If you're going to crap on Blake O'Neill, kindly go ***k yourself.

Blergh

We must find comfort in the bitter tang of words such as "Wait 'till next year!" We must remind ourselves that it took a herculean effort by a top-10 team and a brief intervention by the gods to beat us.

We must also remember what a friend told me when I got divorced: "Whisky helps."

Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. Sometimes it rains.

Asshole

Incredibly entertaining.....asshole.

Ahh Jezzer....

link

I'm stuck at work for the next four hours. If anyone has a link to a live feed, I would be most appreciative.

SF coaches

Morton coaches WRs and Drevno coaches the OL.

So....

I guess Peyton Manning's NOT the greatest QB of all time? Ridiculous that people were saying if he won THIS game the debate was over.

Chrome

I'm having the same problem on chrome. Boo.

link

Wondering if anyone has a link to the game online?? Firstrowsports has a plug-in ad over the screen. I can hear it....but not see it.

Felman Malveaux...there's a

Felman Malveaux...there's a name. I vaguely remember hearing buzz about what he was doing at practice.

Then....nothing.

No....

He was an absolute disaster at NC State. They called him "No Endzone."

Hellllooooo Heisman!

Remember that punt return very, very well.

Oh well.

Good luck to him. Hope he gets a degree and doesn't end up in the Saban Memorial Hospital.

Blergh

I sure am going to miss college sports when everybody "fixes" it.

late score

If you took Clemson and the points, that 23 play, 84 yard drive might have screwed it up for you.

TV

The people in charge of the networks won't be happy until all of college sports are nothing but a smouldering ruin.

Fox Sports...they have admitted that they don't care about the game. it merely serves as a backdrop onto which they project commercials for other things. Then during those other things, they run more commercials.

Then there's Mickey Mouse and their meme-factory. And now this from CBS.

Blergh.

BTW

DIdn't they just build the Dolphins a new stadium recently? Why do they need a new one?

Same here

Publicly-supported football stadiums are a terrible idea. There are any number of position papers that back that up too.

Perspective

The guy who wrote the "**** My Dad Says" blog wrote a good piece about sports and fans. During a tantrum during the Chargers' Superbowl loss in the 90s, he broke a pretty expensive bottle of hooch that his dad had been saving. After recovering from his anger, his dad reminded him that the players on his favorite team didn't give a damn about him. Why did he care so much about them?

I have to admit, several years ago, my mood was totally dictated by the fortunes of the teams I followed. Once, after a terrible loss, I had my weekend destroyed. It ended up destroying the next week and the following weekend. After the season, I realized that I envied people who didn't like sports. The losses hurt worse than the wins felt good. It had become a bad bargain.

So...I've spent the years after that turning the volume down. I still like sports. It just no longer dictates my mood. It is, as someone once said, just a game.

If you find yourself dressing up like a really crappy superhero and making hype videos where you talk trash to N. Dakota State...maybe you're not spending your time well. Maybe try taking a walk...get some exercise...get rid of those idiotic tattoos. Maybe try and kiss a girl once in awhile. Move out of your mom's basement and try getting a job too.

Hey, back in the day, I was a deadhead. Spent way too much time and money travelling the country and seeing the Grateful Dead. As Jerry Garcia said, "If the only thing you have in your life is the Grateful Dead, you don't have much."

Same could be said for football fans.

Controversy?

It's controversial to assert that Southern Cal football gives illegal benefits to recruits?? I think you could throw a dart at a USC roster ten times and hit a guy who received illegal benefits with every throw.

For the record...

I am available and would be happy to take over play-by-play duties.

Call me.

Good luck to him

Hope he gets a terrific education and meets a nice girl.

Detroit

I'm not from Detroit and don't live within 1,000 miles of the place...so I have no skin in the game. But Detroit has lots of land and lots and lots of fresh water. If you have those two things, you will always have a city.

Yes, you have to undo decades of political and criminal and union corruption. No, it's not going to be like it was back in the day...but maybe that's a good thing.

One thing...whenever people talk about the mass exodus from Detroit, it's important to note that the population decrease has taken place in the city limits. But since 1980, the population of the Detroit METRO area has largely stayed the same. Eventually, it will be make more economic sense to move back within the city limits and start filling in those massive gaps currently being occupied by weeds, broken glass and burned out homes.

The influx of young, creative people looking for cheap housing is what fueled a renaissance (of sorts) in both Philly and Pittsburgh. Detroit could see the same thing going on. You need to stabilize your society. That means figuring out a way to address the crime (on some level). There's a whole generation of people that are swirling the drain in a vicious cycle. That has to stop as well.

But you've got land and water. Ask Texas how important that is. Remember when Austin was the place that everyone wanted to move to? Well, it bursts into flames every summer.....

Of course, this is also an article that claims Houston is the *best* city in America. It's easily the ugliest city I've ever been in.

*sigh*

Perhaps the title of the class can be, "The Internet Is Not Your Friend."

It's not up just yet...

Grandma Howard

His grandmother actually died during his senior in high school. It's in the Fab Five doc.

Am I wrong?

Wasn't Drew Henson considered the #1 overall recruit in the nation? Also, I think Ricky Powers was the #2 player in the nation (behind Robert Smith) as a senior.

Williams

Is it possible that he gets moved to defense (provided he commits)? What you are describing sounds almost like a free safety or even a guy who could grow into an outside linebacker.

Red Sox

Their game starts at 11 a.m. on Patriots Day. They won 3-2.

Dollar Signs

Charles Barkley was on Dan Patrick's show this morning. He said that agents were doing a fine job of ruining basketball. They just want people to get to the second contract as quickly as possible. That's the only thing they care about.

He brought up the case of the UK kids who went pro last year. Had they come back this year, they would have been one of the all-time great college teams. Instead, UK was in the NIT and the NBA was saddled with a bunch of kids who had made zero impact on the league so far.

The teams that are bad in the NBA can't get better because the draft is littered with kids who are years away from contributing. By the time they're ready...they sign with someone else.

Everyone agrees that adopting something like baseball's rules would be best (let the best players go out of high school...let everyone else have to stay a couple of years in college). But agents run the union and the union won't sign off on such an agreement (doing so without their consent would be illegal).

Great season

That game should have been a joy to watch last night. Instead, it was like watching an impacted molar get cut out of someone's mouth. The officiating was bad for both teams. But it was really...REALLY...bad.

That said, it was a great year. The implications on recruiting will be enormous. This will be a season that Michigan can build on for years to come.

Boo

Damn....

Ah well.

It's more than a temper

Coaches LOVE their players. You spend so much time around your guys that they are your family. Yes, people lose their tempers from time to time...but if you find yourself doing it OVER AND OVER AND OVER again, this isn't a temper problem. This is a YOU problem.

Bobby Knight's guys loved him. They stuck up for him and talked about how the tantrums were about one percent of who he was.

That video doesn't show a guy who has a temper problem...that shows a guy who is a crazy person.

Coaches will yell and cuss sometimes because they want to get more out of you. You're going at 90 percent and they want you to be at 100 percent. Think of Al Pacino's speech in "Any Given Sunday" about it coming down to an inch here and an inch there. The difference in who gets that inch is the difference in who wants it the most.

That's not what Rice is doing in that video. That's a guy who has no ability to cope with his environment.

Bobby Knight

Actually, it was a cop in Puerto Rico that got the trashcan treatment.

Rigged??

Of course it's rigged. Unless you missed every game Michael Jordan ever played in, how could you doubt it?
