A little disappointed on the Harbaugh comment regarding lactic acid. Current understanding is that soreness is not caused by lactic acid, but instead likely micro-tears in the muscle fibers. But, getting some running in to get the blood moving still is good to help sore muscles regardless.
During the race I haven't run with anything either, but it sounds like the OP doesn't have a passport our anything now, and you need that to pick up your number.
I have run the Detroit marathon twice, and the half a few other times, am signed up to run the full this year too (live just outside of Detroit). It is a pretty flat course, but with the bridge and tunnel, people tell me that it isn't as flat as Chicago (never ran that). So I would guess that given the same weather and same fitness, that you would do slightly better in Chicago. Of course, Detroit being a little later in the year usually gives better and more consistent weather.
The documents required are either a passport, or an enhanced license if you are a Michigan resident. Not sure exactly what the wait is for a passport now.
As for a place to stay, I would recommend the Book Cadillac for the race since it is pretty near the start/finish line. Not sure if you would want a place closer to Ann arbor because of the game?
I would be a little nervous trying to PR after a day at the game, especially if tailgating, etc. But worth a try anyway if you are here anyway and want to go for a run Sunday morning.
Sat in the front row of the UM student's section for both the PSU and Rose Bowl, and that PSU game was just amazing. Everytime those, "what is your favorite game," questions come up, I can't understand why PSU '97 isn't at the top of more people's lists. The anticipation leading up to that game, Judgement Day, the complete dominance by the defense, and silence from the home crowd was just amazing. Plus Nebraska almost losing...
Ian Gold sat next to me that year in History of the University of Michigan. He went to class more than I did. I remember thinking he might be a football player, but no way did I think that he was a starting linebacker since he seemed small. I remember that we used to joke around in class, but after I realized who he was, I was too nervous to talk to him anymore. (I know, cool story...)
As part of the Michigan Athletics Family, I want you to know that I have informed Brady Hoke that he will not be returning as our football coach.
I want to thank Brady for his hard work and effort on behalf of Michigan Football, this athletic department and the University. He has done a great job of molding these young men, making them accountable to each other, and focusing them on success in the classroom and in the community.
Brady has worked tirelessly and represented this program with class and integrity. I wanted to make sure that he received adequate time to exhibit the results that would come from his effort. I believe that Brady and our coaching staff had enough time to produce those results and unfortunately they are not there. I feel that moving in a different direction is the right decision.
Moving forward, my objective is to find the right coach for the University of Michigan. This individual will recruit the best student-athletes and put them in position to win in the classroom, on the field and in the community. That is what makes Michigan the world-class University that we all support with great enthusiasm.
Even when UM was up 4 in the beginning and looking like they might blow it open considering they were winning all of the face offs and were controlling TOP, it was a very uneasy feeling that everytime UofD got the ball they seem to get a real good opportunity if not score. That really concerns me against teams with better FO guys. But you have to give them credit for finishing off the game since last year they got out to some good leads, but weren't able to hold them

Was at the game with my 2yo and 3.5yo sons, and left with 1:30 left on the clock with Michigan holding the ball. I hate leaving games early but I figured it being past their bedtimes was a good reason. Bad decision.
Michigan was pretty much dominating the faceoffs, but after the first 8 UM goals, UD's defense really tightened up and kept Michigan from getting many good looks until later in the 4th Q.
It is at Ultimate Sports in Pontiac and tickets are $10. They look to be still on sale at UofD's ticket website for home printing. If there are any left they will sell them at the door, but the sold out by game time 2 years ago.
And of course how can we forget the grattitude we must offer to Mr. Butterfield for his well timed, intentionally dropped pass that made the victory possible.
I ran the half marathon today. A guy was running in an OSU hat. There was a point where you had to do a 180 degree turn with a volunteer pointing where to go. The person there to direct you was just heckling the OSU guy, and never said anything to him about where to turn. The OSU guy just kept going and never did the 180. I heard him talking after the race and he said he went another half mile down the road before he realized he screwed up, adding an extra mile to his race. I thought it was hilarious.
New associate member in lacrosse? It would surprise me if that happened. Actually, I wonder what Hopkins would do if more Big Ten lacrosse teams were added? I know it isn't likely that any of the current Big Ten schools sponsor lacrosse in the near future, but who knows what happens with expansion. Wasn't one of the reasons that the Big Ten made a great fit for Hopkins was because, with only 6 teams, that allowed an auto-bid and the ability to schedule its existing rivals with the non-conference schedule. Maybe one team wouldn't be that big of an issue, but more than that could be if they aren't teams that Hopkins would already be scheduling.
Would be really interested to hear the conversation around Big Ten Lacrosse. The article says, "Loh and Anderson needed to hear about plans for lacrosse in the Big Ten, where the sport isn’t a mainstay as it is in College Park."
I caught Chad Smith's drumstick at the Detroit show a couple weeks ago. I didn't realize that I should display it with my Michigan memorabilia. I wonder if there is a good pic out there that I could find of Chad Smith in Michigan gear from the Columbus show to go with the drum stick.
My gut reaction is that a shot clock would be a terrible idea. I really enjoy watching an offense moving the ball with good passes, even if they have difficulty finding an opening with for a good shot. It seems like a shot clock could almost kill the good patient offense that is still fun to watch.
on the other hand, a team sitting behing the cage playing keep away in the second quarter is grueling to watch. I find myself thining that maybe a shot clock wouldn't be such a bad idea in those cases.
Like others have said, if there was some way to adjust the stall rules to invoke a shot clock after the ref calls to keep it in, or something like that, I think it would be better.
How would the rule be written to not allow the shooting team to get the ball back after a shot if a shot clock was implemented? If it was a 40 second shot clock, if you shoot in the last 5 seconds then it has to be on goal? In that case I tell my guys to shoot over the net with 6 seconds to go if they don't have anything.
It just seems that a shot clock would be difficult to implement in a way that would not hurt the game.
It was a frustrating game today. As you alluded to, faceoffs are a pretty big part of the game, as possessions are a big part of lacrosse. Of course you can still win a game without winning the majority of your faceoffs, but if you have troule clearing and don't have the best performance on D, ot will be a long day if you are losing your faceoffs too. (UM was 7 of 23 today, although I musty say that I coached the Mount St. Mary's faceoff guy his first year in 8th grade. He was a faceoff machine then too as he was quick and never gave up.)
Next year hopefully that will change some, as Michigan has the #1 2012 Faceoff recruit committed according to ESPN Rise (typically a team will recruit guys to only take faceoffs, called FOGOs, or "Face Off Get Off" players). Of course, unless the faceoff guy is good enough to always win it by himself, the team still needs good wing play to help pick up the ground balls after the faceoff guy wins the draw and directs the ball to the location that he wants it to go.
The clears today were another dissapointment. The team was 7 of 13, and the worst part was that 2 or 3 of the turnovers on the clear were due to Failure To Advance (taking too long to get the ball into the offensive box), not because of the great ride of Mt St Mary's, but because of the lack of urgency of the Michigan clear. It seemed like they were taking their time, when a little extra hustle would have gotten the ball into the box in time.
Still have to be proud of Team 1, but was hoping for a little better showing to impress the visitors in the Big House.
I took my son to his first game against UConn at 5 months old. We had an extra ticket (which they require for even babies, supposedly a Big Ten rule), and he was in a Baby Bjorn happily sleeping for most of it.
Of course he won't remember, but I have the ticket and a picture of him in The Big House framed. It was pretty easy - but I did have mom there to feed him at half time.
I took him last season to the Minnesota game, at a year and a half - definitely different than the easy Baby Bjorn experience the year before. Since he wanted to walk around a lot, we didn't stay in our seats for very long. But again, I had an extra ticket and assumed it would be a blowout so he really enjoyed watching all of the people - even if much of that time was walking around the concourse instead of sitting in our seats.
I have a 2 month old now, and plan to take both of the boys to at least one expected blowout game a year.

It makes me sad looking at the rafters in Crisler and seeing it look so empty, especially knowing that there used to be more (I miss the NIT one too). Replacing the 1998 Big Ten Tournament banner would mean a lot to me.
Although, we still need to replace a couple Final Four banners, so if the tradeoff was BTT Champion and Elite 8, or lose the BTT and make the Final Four, I would take the latter.
I want to thank you and others posting lacrosse content. It is exciting to see others interested in the sport also, enough even that a recap of the game gets bumped to the front page.

Was at the game and it definitely was sold out, there were multiple signs up saying that no more tickets were available. We had a couple extra tickets and had no problem getting rid of them, there were plenty of people trying to find tickets still. It makes me wonder if next year when Michigan is the host (U of D was technically the home team) if they will also play the game in Pontiac or move it to a different location.
I did struggle a little bit while trying to root 100% for Michigan - I previoiusly coached a couple of the kids on U of D's team and didn't know what to do when one of them scored. Cheer, boo, keep quiet? The end result was quietly holding back a cheer I think. It was a very conficting moment.

I have set up TVs on multiple occasions for the Michigan game, at multiple locations.
The first thing is that the game will probably be on ABC, but of course we don't know that for sure. I think your best bet is to plan for both situations just in case. If I were you I would use DirecTV, but make sure that you have a good plan in place before you go and waste time trying to get a signal.
What type of TV are you going to be using? HD? LCD? CRT? It all matters for your plan. If you want to get an HD signal, then that complicates things somewhat. If you are using a DirecTV dish, then in order to get the HD channels, the dish has to be more precisely aligned. If the game is on ABC, of course in theory you could pick up the HD signal over the air, but at the UConn game I tried using a powered UHF (the HD channels in the area are sent over the UHF band, so I am not sure how well rabbit ears would work for you) antenna that I brought with me, and although it worked great at first, as it got closer to game time the signal was lost and I was never able to reestablish it (I have never determined why). I had the Standard Definition DirecTV dish as a backup, but I was disappointed at the HD failure. Based on the experience I would be a little nervous relying on catching the game from over the air signals.
Another negative to not using DirecTV is that you likely will be around people that also are playing the game on their TVs. If everyone else is using DirecTV, then the enjoyment of the game is usually diminished by whoever happens to be watching the feed with the most lag. Even if it is a half of a second, it is frustrating to hear the cheers and groans of others just before you see whether the winning touchdown catch is made or dropped (that is also a reason to make sure your sound system is the loudest).
Now back to your TV choice. A big reason that this matters is glare. The best TVs that I have found for outside viewing during the day are LCD tvs that have a matte screen (the glass of the screen is not glossy). CRT tvs are terrible for glare. I have tried anti-glare sprays, and putting the TV inside the back of the SUV with a tent over it. Even though those methods helped, the glare was still worse than the LCD screen that we mount to the top of my car with no tent or anything over it. If you are bringing an SUV, the best way I have found to mount the TV in order for a large number of people to view it (assuming you have an LCD TV which are light weight) is to mount it to the top of the vehicle. If you do that you will make an impression on everyone around you, and they will probably leave their tailgate viewing areas to watch your TV since they can't see their's with all of the people standing in the way. (But if rain is called for that day you have to make sure to plan for covering the TV properly.)
As for setting up the DirecTV dish if you go that route. First, you must have a stable mount that is high enough to ensure people can't get in the way. This must be able to withstand high winds without the dish moving in case it is a windy fall day. Also, you must be able to perfectly level the mast after you arrive at the tailgate spot, before you put the dish on the mast. Sometimes people level the mast at home (or don't do it at) and then wonder why it doesn't work when the arrive at the golf course with their car sitting at a 45 degree angle.
When I find a parking spot, the three things I look for are a good view of the Southern sky for the dish, a good place so that a large number of people can watch the TV, and parking at an angle that will diminish the tv glare at game time.
