Interesting but way too subjective

The classification here just simply can't tell us much.  Others have pointed out many specific flaws, one that jumps out at me is that Tommy Bowden was considered STRONG while Gary Andersen was considered WEAK -- they're two deviations apart and they had almost the same resume going into their jobs at Clemson and Wisconsin respectively.

Putting these coaches into three bins doesn't tell us much and it would be flawed no matter who is doing the categorizing.  I think if you want to measure desirability, you're going to have to show me the money.

Put the coaches average annual salary vs. some sort of 1-2 year running average for power 5 coaches.  Irrespective of a few bad decisions by school that would likely tell you a lot more about the perception of a coach's abilities at his time of hiring.

Correct rooting interests

B1G over SEC except the unholy triumvarate. Never ND, MSU, or OSU.

No it does not

The honor of the conference does not exist. This is the worst reason to root for any team, much less MSU.

No No NO

Please God no.

The Under the Sun game?

Does the kickoff return data factor in likelihood of a fumble?

I'm guessing not.

In other words, an average return to the 21 with a 2% lost fumble opportunity probably isn't worth an average return to the 20 with a 0% chance of a fumble. Not to mention that median return should probably be used here, not average.

ohio is not our biggest rival in every sport

Why do you think this?

yes, this is an important point

Ohio is clearly our biggest rival in football, but State is clearly our biggest rival in every other sport. The game trumps all, but in every other sport, I'd rather beat sparty

Urban Meyer at the PSU game?

Clearly this means he's going to be the next coach there. Has he bought a house yet?

It's not that simple

The DOJ doesn't want the laws they use weakened. Period. They're not going to let some sort of flimsy precedent on FERPA be established that they then have to tackle when they're actually actively interested in preserving some sort of federal documentation that's important.

Uhhhh

You want to revise this statement?

Mid-January

Last year it was January 10th, from the brewery, so maybe a little longer to reach anywhere.

Confused/pretty sure I disagree with you

While I agree that the lateral call was a big miss, you refer to it as a "free touchdown" when there is pretty much no way we get more than 5 yards -- if any -- on a fumble return on that play. There were MSU players all around the ball at the time they blew the play dead.

As Belisarius states

Whether in incident is in the heat of the moment, or rather, within the course of the game, makes a huge difference in punishment.

Additionally, you don't think missing the Wisconsin game (MSU's biggest game of the year) will dissuade him from engaging in similar behavior in the future?

Not at the same level at all

As far as premeditation, violence, and the rarity of the occurences. One game in this case seems sufficient.

The world is filled with racists that have minority co-workers

Once again, nothing indicates that Lewan did anything wrong. I'm just trying to shoot down these very poor logical arguments.

I disagree

If it is determined that one of our players used a racial slur, even on the field, I would expect our coaching staff to take immediate severe action. I'd say that's just as bad as a punch and a 1 game suspension is in order.

With that being said, there's nothing that indicated that there was any issue with that here.

You are the worst type of person

Please leave.

Pure conjecture

I can't believe some of you believe this drivel. Section 1 has no basis or theory for what was said, he's just speculating.

You mean like McGill?
You . . .

 . . . are a dick

Only count Smoltz as a Spartan if you count Jeter as a Wolverine

Both attended school for less than a semester in order to posture the MLB teams that drafted them.

WHO?!?

WHO?!?

Outside of their games against Boston

TB is 11-9 in September. TB being the hottest team in the AL is a pretty common misconception right now.

Dude

That retort was so original I almost fell off my dinosaur.

Definitely the Sox/Rays, hosting

Home field advantage is a pretty big deal, like most sports. Not to mention if you the Red Sox OR the Rays you're going to get jumbled rotations from them in a 5 game series.

The Rays will at least have Davis, Niemann, or Moore available for game 1. The Red Sox rotation will be a complete shambles.

In the MLB playoffs, you should never look ahead. Forget getting the Yankees in a 5 game series. Let's just hope somebody from the other side knocks them off.

Disagree with "Any " ____________ STATE U" is a little bro."

First, specifically with Arizona. I'd say it's pretty even and if anything slight overall advantage to ASU on this one. Their school isn't better academically, but it is more popular with a slight edge in football and baseball (big chasm between basketball however).

Also, see Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Lousiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and other states without a dominant flagship.

This is definitely not true

Sure there are cultural differences, but those are (somewhat) glossed over time. There is a ton of application overlap between these two schools; and the inferiority complex is vast and traditionally is present in all sports (MSU, for example, has traditionally been superior in basketball) as well as academics.

Complete correct

There is no rivalry between Texas and TTU; Texas/A&M is probably the closest comparable to UM/MSU in the country.

Also, Ole Miss/MSU(NTMSU) fits into the little brother category much more so than the even footing category.

I came on here to remark sarcastically . . .

. . . that maybe this turn of events would cause Brodie to chill out. He beat me to the punch by banging his drum like 6 times with other theories about what certain universities are that require the B1G to EXPAND NOW.

I'm sorry I wasn't quicker.

Wins and GAA are weak

But save percentage is actually a very good stat. Only a few goalies (and the systems they play in) can buck that kind of sample size

Uhhh

I think it's possible to be a SABR and still think Verlander should win the Cy. In fact, the SABR community is somewhat split on this issue with the somewhat strong majority pushing for Verlander.

As had been noted, bWAR has Verlander well ahead of Sabathia. Verlander leads in K/9, K%, BB/9, BB%, ERA, SIERA, tERA (by far).

Sabathia leads in FIP largely as a result of the paucity of HRs he's given up. On the other hand, he still leads in xFIP (just barely) as a result of giving up almost no flyballs. This is pretty dumb however, as Verlander has one of the highest IFFB rates in the league, which is factored into his flyball rate, and he's giving up 6% less line drives. So to just look at FIP and fWAR and say Sabathia's better shows YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. NERD HARDER.

Right . . .

TCU's 3-3-5 had a real hard time stopping MANBALL in the Rose Bowl this year. Can we drop this fallacy?

No, it really doesn't

It means they created additional stability by adding overall revenue and probably assured that FSU doesn't leave, which was the only school considering leaving anyway.

It's been clear for a long time

That the B1G, the Pac-X, and the SEC were going to be part of a superconference scenario. They're in. The ACC made this play because they want to be assured they are number 4.

No scenario exists where the other 3 conferences are left out of a "new world" alignment, expansion or not.

No

TCU is far, they bring no audience or markets, and they aren't a great academic school.

So really, they bring absolutely nothing to the table for the B1G. West Virginia would be better, and that's saying something.

Uhhh . .

I'm guessing no one ever taught you how to convey voice and tone within your writing.

This is ridiculous

What an irrational re-writing of Michigan history and speculation wrapped up in Maize-colored glasses.

Both coaches had the same motivation: getting the players to play better so the team wins. If you don't like the yelling, that's fine, but Bo and Kelly were essentially doing it the same way.

Not sure how much you know about Texas

But Texas Tech without Texas brings nothing. Nothing.

Also, nothing Texas Tech does will influence Texas. At all.

It would be like Ferris State's decision to leave the CCHA affecting Michigan in hockey.

Not so fast my friend

The Marlins' payroll is small enough that even if 0 people showed up to every game, based primarily on revenue sharing, along with TV contracts, the Marlins would still turn a profit.

See Deadspin, 2010.

It's not that Duk is bad

More that Yahoo has some really really good bloggers in charge of some of their other sports (Wyshinski, Hinton) and then they run this guy out there for baseball, which you could argue should be one of their flagships. He's pretty mediocre. Not a great writer, not captivating, and doesn't write about things well from a national perspective. Way too whimsical. It'd be fine if he was the no. 2 guy on the blog, but he's not.

I can't speak for Saucer Central in H-Town

But the Saucers in Austin and North Dallas do not have more beers than Ashley's. Certainly not more beers on tap. They have a lot of beers and rotate frequently but as far as what's available on a given day: less.

I love the Saucer but their ambience doesn't stack up to Ashley's IMO.

No shout out to Broadway Cafe

Not exactly a U of M staple but still, can't go wrong with a Cheesesteak and some sort of Korean dish on the side.

Mondo rec for Old Town, that was my jawn back in the day. Surprisingly highly recommended as a wrap-up to a good date . . . if the girl you're trying to get with is an alcoholic like you.

I assume you're in Lubbock?

Which may be "Texasy" but is in no way BBQ central in Texas.  Austin or Lockhart my friend, Austin or Lockhart.

Franklin's (primo)

Forget the Fulmer Cup

It's time to create the Shalala Cup. Who wants to create a point system for off-season NCAA violations?

Not so fast my friend

His FIP is a bit inflated from his HR/FB rate being so high, which is really just a product of giving up a few home runs in such a small inning sample.

Truth be told, we don't know exactly what we're getting yet, but his minor league numbers are encouraging.

Can we get some sort of visual chart on hockey recruits?

There's so many commits from so far out it'd be nice to have a depth chart including incoming recruits up to c/o 2014 at which I could glance at from time to time.
