| 10 weeks 13 hours ago | Great game but.... |
Many commentators believe Beilein did a poor job in coaching the game. Keeping Burke on the bench too long, not utilizing Spike in the second half and poor use of timeouts something he is notoriously bad at. To his credit he is a good recruiter and the program should remain at an elite level for several years. FWIW, winning the National Championship in Basketball is one of the hardest acheivement in collegiate sports. Losing in the final game is nothing to be ashamed of. |
| 13 weeks 3 days ago | Excellent analysis of what the |
problem is with this team. Bottom line is this team lacks the killer instinct and has assumed the personalty of its coach. Beilein job is safe (Brandon has built a shrine of Beilein in his back yard) but with the regularity of losses to stiff competition it will be inevitable that recruiting will begin to suffer. Word will get around that Michigan is a paper tiger. I like the idea of bringing in new assistant coaches that will help with defense and defense rebounding but I would add that the offensive needs help. Many good teams use schemes to score. Michigan seems to be built on individual ability. Let the player decide if he can score given his position on the court. No plays or strategy to allow them to get open.Good defenses will shut down individual based offensives. Championship teams excel on defense. Michigan up to now and going forward cannot play at that level unless things change.

| 14 weeks 13 hours ago | Well written but I submit |
it would not have mattered if Jordan's tip would have gone in. There was still time on the clock and we would have found a way to lose. This team is as talented as any in the country but does not have the heart to win when it matters. Coaching is the issue. Also, how can a basketball team in a championship game be out of time outs with two minutes left? Very sad. |
| 14 weeks 1 day ago | Beilein is a nice man but |
a very average coach. Big game and he cannot manage his time outs leaving him with none with two minutes to play? The choking of free throws is a reflection of the coach. In the clutch, the team will finds ways to lose big games. They should have lost to MS but for the Burke doing his thing. I am telling it like it is and I am sure this will be considered flame bait which is not my intention. Reduce your expectations for this team in the NCAA tournament. It will be an early out. |
| 16 weeks 3 days ago | I am sure Beilein is a fine coach and a good man |
My point is until he demonstrates he can compete at the higher levels in the Big Ten or nationally I suggest we hold off placing him in the Michigan Hall of Fame. He still has a great deal to prove just as Hoke does. Will it happen? I sure hope so and I will continue to root for them. But like any informed fan, I reserve judgment until the results are in. One finally point. If any of you believe that the majority of the athletes attend Michigan for an education you have you're heads in the sand. College athletics today is about enhancing sport careers and have little to do with education. The one exception would be the Ivy League. |
| 16 weeks 4 days ago | Unlike many I do not visit or post regularly on this site |
because there is more to life than Michigan athletics. However, I do periodlically check in and post when I believe I have something to say. What I have quickly learned participating on this site is if you want to get points just build a shrine to Michigan teams in your back yard and post comments in accordance with the shrine. FWIW, I went to Michigan when nothing less than a Big Ten championship was acceptable. Being second or third in the conference was considered a failed season. Times have changed and today being above 500 is defined as a successful season. It may be I am being unrealistic. But unless you demand better rarely do you get it. Much is written about the highly critical nature of the eastern media regarding their sport teams especially in cities like NY, Boston and Philadelphia. One cannot ignore the results. |
| 16 weeks 4 days ago | Not a troll but a fan who sees |
the program with realistic eyes. I have not indicated he is a bad coach. All I am saying is he has not produced any outstanding teams which have been competitive with the power programs. This year the team reached #1 status soley by default and when pressed to play against high powered teams they have been beat rather soundly. It reminds me of Notre Dame or Michigan playing Alabama in football. Seriously, does anyone believe the Michigan basketball team will reach the sweet sixteen this year? Now if Michigan standards in competitive sports has been lowered to being competitive with middle tier schools is all that matters then I am out of line.

| 16 weeks 4 days ago | I am sorry I don't get the love fest with Beilein |
Has has not won anything. For the most part, when he plays a top caliber team he loses. I am not a Michigan State fan but Tom Izzo is head and shoulders above Beilein in almost every aspect of the game. Had he been coaching the Michigan team when they played Michigan State recently they probably would have won Until he demonstrates he can hang with the big boys I suggest everyone reserve judgment regarding his tenure at Michigan. |
| 29 weeks 1 day ago | Terrific inputs but most missed the crucial point |
OSU is a better coached and talented football team. The should have won the game and if anything it is a wonder the game was so close. As Brian pointed out but for the OSU defense proclivity to occasionally implode we probably would not have scored a touchdown. Hoke is hardnose throw back coach who lacks creativity and imagination. His mantra is give me players who are big and tough. Sadly, to compete at the upper levels of today's football environment this approach is archaic. To coach on the sidelines in a sleeveless shirt in 30 degree weather without a headset tells you all you need to know what type of program he runs. He needs to modernize and not believe everything Bo did is the right way to coach today. |
| 29 weeks 3 days ago | Let's be honest |
OSU was and is the better team. But for two broken plays which lead to two Michigan touchdowns the offense did very little. The score of the game was not indicative of the difference in the teams. OSU is better. As they say, you are what your record is. Before I get flamed, I am an avid Michigan man but also a realistic one. We were lucky to win against NW and only a last second field goal saves us from MSU.

| 29 weeks 3 days ago | Lewan will not leave |
Everytime he has played against a good defensive lineman he has not shown the ability to consistantly block him. If he was any good in opening holes they would have run behind him more. Notice in today's game they rarely if ever ran behind him. Pro scouts will advise him to stay another year. What the team needs is a good offensive line coach. They as a unit get pushed back into the backfield regularly. But for DR natural running ability the average run for the season would be less than two yards. |
| 1 year 16 weeks ago | Transitioning from a relatively successful pro style offense |
to a successful spread offense takes many years. You need to recruit a totally different athelete and considerable patience. At a school accustomed to winning the majority of their games, the transition did not make sense. Gary Danielson made this point when he learned of RR going to Michigan. He predicted failure because Michigan and its fans could not tolerate the difficult and lengthy transition. Arizona State made the right decison in hiring RR. Their programs is in deep trouble and Michigan's was not.
|
| 1 year 17 weeks ago | It is premature for Michigan to play a team |
of Alabama caliber. In two or three years we would be much more competitive. I don't know if this is a money grab for Brandon or felt he wanted some national exposure. Either way, the team will be exposed badly and it may take several games to get over it. This by any measure is not a good game to schedule for a program starting to get back on its feet. |
| 1 year 22 weeks ago | We are not ready to play a team like Alabama |
I am not sure I want to witness this spanking. VT defense is leagues below Alabama and yet we were very fortunate to score. Can you Imagine what Alabama defense will do to us? Success will be getting a first down. Save your money for the regular schedule when we play teams more at our level. We are at least two to three years away from Alabama level. BTW, I would write this for all the big ten teams. |
| 1 year 27 weeks ago | I believe we are placing too much emphasis |
on a running back. There are many good running back and all can do the job so long as there is a decent offensive line. This differs from a top notch QB. A good QB can make a huge difference even with an average offensive line. If Dunn decides on OSU no big deal. There are too many good running backs to be concerned over the loss of Dunn. |
| 1 year 28 weeks ago | Hoke's responses in interviews |
are totally uninformative and worthless. He never says anything worthy of note. Each response starts with "well" and from there you get vacuous comments. I am beginning to feel he lacks football smarts but is very able in hiring good assistants and creating an environment for rough tough disciplined football. This is not meant to demean Hoke. He really doesn't offer much when it comes to interviews. |
| 1 year 29 weeks ago | Meyer's had no problem doing the MIchigan Nebraska game |
so it is a good assumption he doesn't want to be placed in the position of criticizing OSU coaching or players especially if he is the next OSU coach. His request seems to confirm the rumors he will be the next coach. He will be good for the B10. The league definitely needs an upgrade. Watching LSU maul Arkansas only demonstrated how far the Big 10 needs to improve. Our big10 champion last year MSU lost to Alabama 48-0 in whichever bowl. |
| 1 year 30 weeks ago | If one is reading Rich Rod's mind |
he is thinking had they given me money for a decent DC, I would be at this point if not better. I would have beaten Iowa and probably MSU. But of course he would be wrong. The difference in the physicality of this team between this year and last year is like night and day. Also, the team is fundamentally much more sound. Very few penalties and not many glaring mistakes. It is a good sound football team and showing improvement each week. That is the hallmark of a well coached team. |
| 1 year 30 weeks ago | The only injury DR sustained |
was to his ego. It was pulled because he was not taking care of the ball. Hoke and staff knew that based on how well the defense was playing the only way they would lose is if DR did not take care of the ball. The last pass was as bad a throw he has made all year. A sure interception but for the incompetence of the Ill. player. |
| 1 year 31 weeks ago | Happy Valley is a very |
insular community. They are isolated from the rest of PA and only allow outsiders to visit for football games. They take care of their own and JoePa was the ruler. When any of his football players got in trouble it was buried faster than Bin Laden. The culture was to protect regardless of the wrong. It was all about football and perpetuting the myth of success with honor. As a result, Sandusky one of their own was given criminal latitude to continue is evil ways and community turned a blind eye. There is an interesting article about the disappearance of the DA who investigated the 1998 incident involving Sandusky. To this day he has not be found. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/09/sports/ncaafootball/questions-on-sandu... |

result in convictions especially with collaborative testimony. Juries believe prosecutors because they feel the case would not have been prosecuted if it did not happen and they do not want to set free a child molestor. |
| 1 year 31 weeks ago | I have one question for Paterno |
If the graduate assistant had reported to Paterno that Paterno's grandson was in the shower with Sandusky would he have handled the matter any differently? Joe Pa blew it and he needs to go NOW. |
| 1 year 34 weeks ago | You makes some excellent points. However, |
there is no denying the better team won. If we play them five times, I would wager they would beat us all five times. The wind really restricted Cousins. If he had a calm day, between Bakers running, his passing and their defense we were clearly outmanned. it is what it is. |
| 1 year 34 weeks ago | Thanks for the terrific analysis |
It confirms what many failed to understand. The play was doomed from the outset. My view was if they did block the blitz there was nothing to priove the play would be successful. This post proves it would not had succeeded. I was not aware the Kroger was blocked and not able to get to his route. I watched a couple of pro games this weekend and in both games with fourth and inches the qb sneek succeeded. Hope the staff took notice. I don't believe anyone has given a reason for the play call other than it has been successful in the past. Let me give this reason. The staff did not have confidence that even if they did get the first down using a run play they could score a touchdown on plays that followed. Their first touchdown was as a result of a broken play and DR's ability to make a great play. The fake run and pass play on fourth and inches was a do or die play for a touchdown and not a first down. |
| 1 year 34 weeks ago | Michigan is getting better and |
is on the right track. But we must temper our expecatations. College football supremecy has shifted considerably since the Hayes and Bo era. The power is in the south. Consider this. MSU beat us last year handily. They were co big ten champions. Yet in the bowl games against Alabama they were utterly destroyed 48-0. TCU beat the class of the big ten Wisconsin. The MSU team of this year is weaker and yet they beat us. I would hazard a guess that but for the wind they may have beat us by a larger margin. What I am saying is we may never reach the upper tier of college football again. The dynamics have changed. I do not look forward to the next year game against Alabama. It will not be pretty. |
| 1 year 35 weeks ago | More importantly even if Kroger was open |
it would have been very iffy for DR to complete the pass. His accuracy is atrocious. They should have run the ball. Hoke knows it. |
| 1 year 35 weeks ago | NO one thought Michigan would go undefeated! |
Why all the consternation? They were beat by a better team. The players know it as do the coaching staff. That said, they will learn and no doubt improve. Whether enough to beat better teams remains to be seen. |
| 1 year 35 weeks ago | Michigan is at least two recruiting classes |
from being able to compete with MSU, Wisconsin, OSU and Nebraska. Hoke and his coaches know this. MSU is a better team. Being realistic encourages improvement. I remain in my belief that Hoke and his staff would not have recruited DR. Though he is a fine football player he is not a big time QB. Good defenses (not great like LSU and Alabama) will corral him everytime.
|
| 1 year 35 weeks ago | MSU was better on |
both sides of the ball. Everyone agreed that the game would be decided in the trenches and that was the case today. I agree coaching left much to be desired. MSU defended Michigan exactly the same last year. Yet we made no adjustments despite knowing how they were going to defend us. That speaks to talent. MSU was better and tougher. |
| 1 year 35 weeks ago | Thank you |
Now some of these posts make sense. Much appreciated. BTW, it is an apt term in DR's case.:) |
