I don't get this ACC…

I don't get this ACC argument at all.  Big Ten schools get twice the money that ACC schools get. In the new playoff format the Big Ten will get three to five playoff teams every year. The ACC will get one, maybe two in an odd year.  Moving forward, the ACC and likely the Big 12 are doomed.  They can't remain competitive with the Big Ten and SEC when their schools get half the money and resources.  Florida State, Clemson and probably North Carolina and Miami are eventually going to leave the ACC.  What's left is another group of five conference.

The Big 12 is not in much better shape.  What are the power football programs in that conference moving forward?  Arizona, Utah and TCU? There are two conferences left at the top level.  By the time realignment finishes both the ACC and Big 12 will get less money, not more in the next round of TV contracts.  Moving forward if you want to play college sports, not just football, at the highest level, you have to be in the Big Ten or SEC.

I thought the exit fee was…

I thought the exit fee was something like $120 million.  If, and its a big if, they can join the SEC or Big 10 and get a full share, their TV money would go from around $40 million per year to $80 million per year.  Stay with the ACC and get half the money Big 10/SEC teams get though 2036, or join the Big 10/SEC and get to break even in three years seems like an easy choice.

I am not sure this really…

I am not sure this really helps but we need some type of regulation around college football and to a degree the other college sports.  Almost every other sport has rules about how much you can spend on players, trades, buying players from other teams, etc.  A sport where very few or one team always wins because they have the most money is not going to be very entertaining.

It seems like this proposal would just accelerate what is already happening and make it happen across all sports.  Essentially the Big Ten and the SEC will win, not just in football but in every sport.  This will be driven by the huge disparity in per school TV money.  Big Ten and SEC get around $80 million per year in TV money compared to Big 12/ACC getting $30 to $40 million. They can afford to spend $20 to $25 million across all their sports to have the best teams.  A big 12 team won’t be able to spend more than half their TV money on players. The group of five conferences are even more screwed, as they have no way to pay this kind of money to players.

The few remaining big name schools that can join the Big Ten/SEC will, there are not many left anyway.  As a result, the other schools will become even less competitive and get lower ratings.  Their TV money goes down while the Big Ten/SEC continue to grow.

Well it’s great for the athletes at schools like Michigan, it really shrinks the number of opportunities for many athletes.  There are currently 350 division 1 basketball colleges and 133 division 1 football schools.  There are 291 division 1 softball schools. This plan would mean there are only around 40 schools at the top level.

Michigan website says we…

Michigan website says we have more than 900 student athletes.  So minimum annual for Michigan would be $13.5 million.

Fly back out of Ontario on…

Fly back out of Ontario on the 2nd. There is a 6:50 am to Oakland for $129 or if you want to sleep in there is a 9:10 am for $154. Hotels out that way are much cheaper. I found a Spring Hill in Corona for $139. If you don’t stick with Marriott you can likely get cheaper than that

Edit: multiple cheap hotels for $99 out that way

The more I think about this…

The more I think about this the more I don't think the Big Ten has to worry about SEC bias.  The ACC and Big 12 are going to be totally screwed by it, but the Big Ten will be fine.  If we put all the teams in their conferences for next year and applied it to this years rankings, the Big Ten gets Michigan, Washington, Ohio State and Oregon in the playoff. SEC gets Texas, Alabama, Georgia and Missouri.  ACC gets only Florida State.  Liberty gets in as group of five. Big 12 gets a spot that goes to...... Arizona? The Big Ten and SEC can then fight over who gets the last spot which would currently be Penn State with Ole Miss throwing a fit because they are SEC.

From a Big Ten perspective we are fine.  Sure we could get screwed one year if we are 5th in the Big Ten and the SEC bias puts an Ole Miss in over us, but moving forward anything third or better in the Big Ten is a guarenteed spot and in many years 4th will do.

Probably FSU would have got…

Probably FSU would have got in if Georgia won, but in the long run the Big 10/SEC is going to have an advantage over the ACC/Big 12.  The era of two super conferences is already here. The ACC and Big 12 are rapidly becoming closer to the group of five than they are to the Big 10/SEC. I know people are saying that the 12-team playoff will fix this but, in the end, it will heavily favor the two remaining power conferences.

I suspect in a typical year the 12-team playoff will consist of one ACC, one Big 12, one group of five and 9 teams from the SEC and Big 10.  Then we will have a year where the ACC/Big 12 champ is worse than some Big Ten/SEC school who got left out and they will move to call the rest of the conferences the group of 7 and only give them one bid.

Look at the money.  Big Ten and SEC schools are going to get double what the ACC and Big 12 schools are getting.  They also are going to get a bunch of playoff cash each year when each conference gets 3 to 5 teams in the playoffs while the ACC gets one. Despite our disagreements with the current Big Ten commissioner, it’s a great thing we are in the conference we are in. Teams that can't get in the Big Ten or SEC are doomed to play in the minor leagues of college football.

I was looking at who is on…

I was looking at who is on the committee this year and there is very little SEC representation. It looks like the Kentucky AD is the only one with any SEC ties. Not even much southern representation. I don’t see much reason why most of the members would twist themselves in knots to get the SEC in.

I have not watched much…

I have not watched much Alabama this year, is Milroe supposed to be an elite QB? He looks pretty average.

If Michigan and FSU win,…

If Michigan and FSU win, Bama is not getting in. There is no way the committee, outside of the guy from Kentucky, are going to ignore the head to head tie breaker.

I did not hear it, though I…

I did not hear it, though I figured this was the case.  They were ridiculing the NCAA over the Ferris State thing last week.  I enjoy Full Ride and don't really mind Neuheisel despite his dislike for Harbaugh.  He is generally pretty up front about his poor relationship with Harbaugh when ever he talks about him.  That is  different then many commentators who clearly can't stand Harbaugh but act like they are being impartial when they talk about him.

The most fun would be MI, WA…

The most fun would be MI, WA and Florida State all win out. So, there is one spot left. Alabama beats Georgia. Texas wins out.  It would be fun to watch them try to figure out how to include the SEC in the playoff in this scenario. Sure, Texas beat Alabama in Alabama but bla, bla, bla ….. we are going with Alabama.

The funny thing is that…

The funny thing is that Michigan State has been significantly more successful than A&M over the last 30 years. A&M has one conference title in the last 30 years (1998). They have not even made a conference title game since then. A&M is a bottom of the barrel power five team. The only difference between them and Purdue is they spend more money. Hell, Purdue has both a conference and Divison title since A&M has done the so.

Insiders indicate that Warde is unlikely to hire Stallions back even if he is cleared.  Something about a Dyson Vacuum Warde got on Amazon that works like crap.....

Looking at the report the…

Looking at the report the number for Softball is way low. It has it at $613.  For rec leagues sure - if you get used equipment.  For competitive its way more.  They have equipment at only $141.  A decent fastpitch bat is $250 and the good ones are $500.  Comp team fees are $2k or more. Throw in uniforms and one or two overnight trips and you are easily at $3,000.

I don’t really like the trend towards club teams in youth sports.  Unfortunately, if your kid likes the sport and wants to get better, its almost required.  The cost makes it very difficult for families with less money have their kids participate – which sucks.

I also think club teams hurt high school teams as well.  It seems like the high school teams are just not the focus of the best players and coaches. My daughters high school team played the two-time state champs which was ranked top five nationally. They were a decent team, but I am pretty sure her middle of the road 16U comp team could beat them.

The $25 million per year we lose moving to the ACC ensures we are not moving

It was 8 degrees a few mornings ago.  Real story would be Colorado Blue's poor lawn maintenance...

I was referencing your example – not his actions.  The point being if an employee brings you information that raises questions about how they got it, you should ask how they got it.  See no evil, hear no evil is not an acceptable approach.  It also has the potential to get you in legal trouble or in this case trouble with the NCAA for violating at least the spirit of if not the actual rule.

Um, if an employee brings me…

Um, if an employee brings me a deliverable that is full of information that they should not have access to I would at least ask a few questions. I did not know my employee hacked into my clients competitors systems, or broke into their offices to get this information is not a great defense.

Unless Stallions is smarter…

Unless Stallions is smarter than he appears there is likely damning electronic evidence out there.  If he had other people recording the game, they would likely send it to him electronically.  Once he had it, he would have to analyze it.  My guess would be he would have a spreadsheet with the signs and corresponding plays.  Then, once he figured out the signs what did he do with them?  Did he send them to others electronically?  Did he print out a guide to the opponents signs?

Hopefully he used a non backed up lop top that was smashed, burned and is currently at the bottom of the Huron river.  I have my doubts this guy pulled this off with out leaving evidence everywhere once people start to look for it.

It’s early, but so far, I…

It’s early, but so far, I think the list of teams who have beaten a ranked opponent on the road consists of one team. Colorado.  Might as well give them the ranking for this week.

Make sure you don’t piss off…

Make sure you don’t piss off who ever put the curse on Nebraska football.

Living in an area with lots…

Living in an area with lots of growth and economic activity has its challenges, traffic, construction, higher prices, etc.  I live in an area that is seeing massive growth and hear from many people who want the growth to stop. I often think to myself that most of these people did not grow up in areas that see no growth.

Both the town where I was born and the town I grew up in have had no growth for decades.  It’s not great in those places at all. You don't have to drive far from Ann Arbor to see for yourself.  Almost everyone my age from those towns who left for college never returned.  The standard of living has declined considerably along with all the social challenges that creates. I would much rather live in an area that has big construction projects, even if they are an inconvenience, than somewhere where nothing is built and everything is in decline.

Thanks for posting this. …

Thanks for posting this.  Very interesting.  This also seems like it could help explain some current mysteries around the early universe as well.  I think there is currently some uncertainty around why when we look at the early universe there are already so many super massive black holes at the centers of Galaxies. To form a super massive black hole, you need a bunch of massive stars to form and then collapse into black holes.  These black holes then need to migrate to the center of the galaxy and merge with other black holes that have done the same.  Based on that we would not expect to see black holes of the number and size we do when the universe was only a billion years old.  This theory seems to provide another mechanism for that to happen – the mass of the black holes increased due to the expansion of the universe itself, not just due to merging with other black holes.  Very cool.

Apparently they are trying…

Apparently they are trying to run the largest domestic airline in the country with a scheduling system that requires flight crew to call a phone number if their flight cancels so someone can manually enter the change into the system and then tell them over the phone where they are supposed to go next. I guess this system got overloaded to the point that Southwest flight attendants were posting screen shots of being on hold for 7 hours trying to report and get their updated schedule.

They will likely get things back to running by next week but actually fixing the cause of the problem is likely a one to two year project (not an IT guy but I suspect creating and implementing an integrated scheduling system for an airline operating 4,000 flights a day using various software systems from the 90's is not something quickly completed)

I have generally flown Southwest for the last decade but I think I am out. With no immediate fix available, the odds of the Southwest system collapsing during the next beg weather event are close to 100%. I guess its time to get my status back with fricken United....

Currently they are arguing…

Currently they are arguing that they had a much better offensive success rate than Michigan so they really out played us. It was just a failure to execute on the big plays that cost them. The connection between Michigan’s lower offensive success rate and their high risk defensive strategy that directly resulted in the big plays is apparently lost on them.

I really hope this is the lesson they take from this and keep playing a defense that requires perfection from all their players. Watching Michigan players break 50 plus yard TD plays against Ohio State will always be fun.

I would expect him to get a little more, some days in Jail as an example, but still don't think he should get a felony as that can really screw his life up long term. Again, assuming this is his first real screw up, I tend to think second chances are best.

Agree.  I would assume that…

Agree.  I would assume that is what will happen.  No reason to destroy their lives over this.  I would expect the felony will be plead down as well. (assuming that Crump does not have a long list of priors)

This is pretty much their…

This is pretty much their only option. He is going to be their coach for the rest of the decade. Hopefully he continues to be mediocre at best with 6 it 7 wins the best they can hope for. Historically that is where that program is anyway

The current GFS model shows…

The current GFS model shows an unseasonably warm storm coming up from the south which would generate rain and 70 for the game. It looks like a good deal of rain. This is followed by a strong cold front and 20’s the day after the game.

Of course this is 13 days out. So the storm and front could move a few days either direction, or not happen at all. Really need to wait until next Sunday for a more reliable forecast.

You are forgetting the Pac…

You are forgetting the Pac 12.  One of USC, UCLA or Oregon (i'd put my money on Oregon) is most likely going to end up as a one loss Pac 12 champion who will have multiple top 25 wins over their last four games to get there.  That team is in the playoff.  They are not going to put a 1 loss non conference campion in ahead of them. So if Georgia and TCU win out, it would be those two plus Michigan/Ohio State Winner, plus Pac 12 champion.

If TCU loses there is an additional spot which will be more of an argument between a potential one loss ACC champ (unlikely as I think both North Carolina and Clemson lose again), a one loss TCU big 12 champ (though they could lose to both Texas and in the Big 12 Championship) and the loser of Michigan/Ohio State and a one loss Tennessee.

Rodgers is so pissed off at half time he let his teammates know he is going to throw a pick  to a defensive tackle if they don’t start playing up to his standards.

I agree with you on that…

I agree with you on that. Their attempts to throw downfield into a 40 mph wind were proof enough. I was thinking more in terms of competent D and O. I could see OSU beating a decent team 17-14. TCU on the other hand is not beating a team with a decent offense unless they score 40

I think Oregon has the…

I think Oregon has the advantage over TN if they both win out as one would be a conference champion.

The groupings seem obvious…

The groupings seem obvious at this point.

GA is clear #1

Michigan and OSU are the balanced undefeated teams. 2 or 3. Order does not really matter.
TCU is next as the more flawed undefeated is the clear 4.

Oregon and TN - the teams who only lost to the clear number 1 are 5&6.

Everybody else…..

Alabama should be further…

Alabama should be further down. They barely beat Texas and A&M and then lost this week. Is their best win Texas at this point (a game they won by 1 point despite knocking the Texas QB out early)?

One of the greatest Michigan…

One of the greatest Michigan coaches ever with a legacy that goes well beyond Michigan. As Alex points out she played a huge role in expanding softball from a niche sport to arguably the most popular Women’s college sports. I was just looking at the schedule for the fall ball league my daughter will be playing for in Northern Colorado. For fall ball, they have 196 teams signed up to play between 10u and 14u. The sport has grown a ton particularly in areas that were never thought of as softball hot spots. Hutch played a big role in making softball specifically and women’s sports in general what they are today.   Enjoy retirement coach.

This just seems like another…

This just seems like another way to say you are the hardest working team which is of course coach speak for we are not very good.

The Browns are the most…

The Browns are the most incompetent organization in sports and it’s not even close.

What is Michigan's NIL plan?…

What is Michigan's NIL plan?  Shouldn't we have a whole department dedicated to getting NIL deals for players. If we are paying up to a million bucks for a coordinator it seems like we should be spending at least that much on an NIL department.

The compensation plan for how ever leads it should be: 1st in BIG NIL - $1 million bucks, 2nd, set of steak knives, 3rd, your fired.

Sure the D let down in the…

Sure the D let down in the end but I would point to the failure to plate a run in the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th or 11th as the primary cause of the loss. If you only give up two runs in ten your D and pitching did fine.  Your bats let you down.  Two runs allowed should win you most games.

Floorplan was a perfect fit…

Floorplan was a perfect fit for my family.  Only thing I would change would be a three car garage to better fit the kids junk and the snowblower

Interesting how many people indicate Colorado as the place to move.  I moved to Colorado from Michigan in 1998.  I love it here but my concern about the climate/water/fire situation is increasing. I have witnessed some things in the last three years that are hard to describe in terms of their apocalyptic nature.  It does not seem to be getting better and the risk of a truly catastrophic mountain fire season starting in the next few weeks is extreme.  So, I would actually go the other way and would probably return to Michigan or perhaps try Minnesota if the political situation in Michigan become too problematic. The upper Midwest is a bit of a climate safe zone.

Agree.  I think Northern…

Agree.  I think Northern Colorado > South of Denver therefore Greeley > Highlands Ranch.

They say you stop noticing…

They say you stop noticing the cow shit smell after awhile....

I also have a 12 y/o in…

I also have a 12 y/o in softball and agree you see some crazy shit from parents.  I have noticed that crazy parents and crazy coach seem to go together. If you see a good coach who is encouraging his players, very engaged, etc. you tend to see the parents are also well behaved.  If the coach is a nut job the parents tend to be the same.  I personally don’t get having your kid play for the nut job coach.

Last year I saw a coach at first scream at a 12-year-old across the field for not running on a dropped third strike.  She yelled that she was sick of her shit and she better run her ass back to the dugout. If that’s my kid I would have walked on the team right then.  I get that sometimes a coach has get on a kid to make them better, but screaming at them in front of big crowd is not the way to do it.  Note the parents on that team were generally a bunch of jerks.

Eventually some portion of…

Eventually some portion of it will be paid by students. The amount works out to around $11,000 per student.  Even if insurance covers some of it that will of course result in higher premiums – though this likely has the effect of spreading costs across other universities insurance cost as well.  Unless the state is going to do some type of special allocation to cover it – that works out to $49 bucks per person in Michigan, the students eventually will cover part of the cost. Side note, I’m pretty sure the state is not going to allocate additional funds to cover this.  The University could also cut spending – which again means the students, employees, vendors, someone is going to pay either in cash or loss of services.

I suppose salary cuts or at least lowering the rate of pay increases are also an option.  That works out to needing to shave around $15,000 per employee over future years.  In the end it’s a mix of all these things as the University will have $490 million less dollars than it otherwise would have in the future. The victims deserve to be compensated. It’s too bad that almost everyone involved is dead or no longer at the university and will not see a dime of their personal wealth contributed.  Current and future generations pay for the sins of the past – so pretty much how it always works.

Between my two kids I have…

Between my two kids I have received 8 covid exposure notifications from their school in the last week. They are vaccinated and wear mask in school so at least they don’t have to quarantine. I have a decent stockpile of rapid test (thanks to Colorado for its free at home testing program) but at this point I am only testing them if they have symptoms. If I did it based on these notifications I would need ten test a week.

Adrian, MI has a pretty limited list: Steven Threet? Kellen Davis played several years in the NFL. Mike Marshall won a Cy Young for the Dodgers in 1974 - the first relief pitcher to win the award.  I guess Mike Marshall it is.

I think I am  skipping the road game this year. Went to Iowa in 2016 and it was a great experience except for the annoying outcome. If you have not been to Iowa for a game I would  recommend it. Hopefully we can win this time.

2023 Minnesota seems like the pick unless you did not go to Nebraska this year - highly recommend that one.

2024 is obviously Texas and 2025 is obviously Oklahoma. Those both seem like bucket list stadiums for any college football fan.
