Warde’s sloth is absurd. He shouldn’t have let it get into the season, regardless of the NCAA stuff. Price goes up nearly 50% w a Natty and can’t even close him.

Funny thing is the incentive laden deal was better for Harbaugh so he didn’t care.

Better keep space to run it…

Better keep space to run it back

I’m not a big fan of the…

I’m not a big fan of the mush rush/ double spy on both sides. We need Milroe to turn the ball over to counter their defense and he does that only when he feels stress. His accuracy goes <50% when he holds the ball but he does get chunks going late downfield. It isn’t a coincidence that better protection led to fewer turnovers.

For example, the Bond catch was on an extended play where the original route was covered by zone and Milroe chucked it to a scramble rule target by the sideline. I don’t think our (or any) CBs have the man skills or speed to consistently stay with those guys for 4 seconds like GA did.

my pass defense formula is: 1) cloud JM first two reads on his half field+ middle drop back and get him to hold the ball to a third read 2) keep gap discipline with 3 rushers who keep one arm free for scrambles, and 4) have the stunt free the 4th rusher consistently on a TE or center or RB to deliver a pressure at 3 seconds and a sack at 4, 5) if we bring a 5th, he gets a sack.

keep their scoring rate under 50% and we give ourselves a chance if we convert TDs.

Deep class, but few players I think will be better than the guys on the roster today besides maybe Oline and Edge.

I thought winning mattered more to recruits. Weird that are recruiting ratings are worse than when Harbaugh got here.

Seems like Sanderson blew up…

Seems like Sanderson blew up. He just assumed Jace was in the wrong missing a session. Didn’t back off when Juwan told him to let him handle it.

Now, people say Juwover because they are waiting for the shoe to drop. Michigan basketball has not been going in the right direction. Very little momentum and poor development. Lack of killer instinct & winners to take home Ws in close games. My recommendation is to focus on fixing transfer & NIL and if the development isn’t there by the tournament you move on from Juwan.

No future coach can succeed with these headwinds.

Brian’s best column I can…

Brian’s best column I can remember. Great win and a well deserved release.

Comprehensive, entertaining, cathartic after months of anxiety/outrage/depression due to tabloid yellow journalism.

at some point, we need a retrospective on how UM blew the PR response on sign gate. In hindsight, I believe we should have said:

- we committed 20 or more Level 3 violations. Our bad breaking the spirit of the rule — put in place to save money. We understand this required nearly $x0k and other programs may not be able afford this. We will self impose a penalty. Let’s move on together. Please cheer on the team:

’after an initial review we discerned that a Michigan staffer may have taken steps that may be determined to be level 3 violations related to advanced video scouting. Instead of purchasing All22 film from a vendor, the staffer hired gig workers to film games on Michigan‘s behalf, and he apparently moonlit or interviewed as a staffer for other teams unbeknownst to Michigan. We will create a voluntary report of the issue and determine an any appropriate penalty with the NCAA. Staffer is suspended as a violation of our internal compliance policies to check rule interpretations. We ask that all evidence be turned over by reporters privately per NCAA processes so that we can learn the truth together. Any leaks to the media will considered bad faith attempts to impair an investigation.

Disagree strongly.

Pac12 champion will be in. That was the best conference and those teams have each beat 5 ranked teams convincingly. Who wants to play Oregon right now!?

Then, they can’t take a 1 loss team over a 1 loss conference champion. Then, the odds of Alabama, Texas and FSU all losing is a remote possibility.

He takes 30 mins to allude…

He takes 30 mins to allude to 30 seconds of information, which usually exists elsewhere. On most days it’s annoying ‘filler’. Every journalist has sources ‘on background’ and unconfirmed info. They don’t spend all the podcast saying they ‘can’t say more’.

That withstanding, I like him. He used his background info to convey confidence and calm. it’s more like therapy for anxious obsessive fans like me than it is informative. But, after Balas’s panic posts I needed it to get to sleep. I also normally appreciate balas’s transparency.

Right now, I just want to watch my team kick the shit out of Purdue and the rest of those cowards. F the Big10. F ESPN. F the Athletic. We have receipts and we’re coming for blood.

Good win. I thought they’d get blown out.

Good game plan that papered over their depth and lines. TCU played into their hands and Travis Hunter played 120 snaps. Shadeur and the skill talent were awesome. TCU didn’t try to bully them. The size difference never mattered oddly. Can’t believe the same TCU staff that beat us put that game plan together.

Twitter got in an A/B…

Twitter got in an A/B testing death trap. You’ll never ship anything innovative that you’re 95% confident exceeds the incumbent. Achievers go for small, sure bets because they want a high batting average. Twitter spent 10 years doing nothing but performance engineering on the same product.

If Zuck can Zuck your 40B company in 9 months, you haven’t made much of anything. Now, rule by fiat from Musk isn’t resulting in much better, but at least it’s a try at something different.

In any case, this fake ddos bug is a massive f’up. CEO won’t survive. They have no hope of reigniting innovation with their hollow shell of a tech org.

Maybe his arms can reach the court from the bench, because no traditional center is playing in the NBA with the current rules/regime.

Use charcoal to stabilize…

Use charcoal to stabilize your temps along with wood. It takes some practice to use only wood and maintain stable temps. Can depend on moisture in wood, and weather. If no coal, start the fire an hour before so it gets stable as a bed of coals. I usually go with 1-2 oak logs per hour on my Yoder. Start with smaller pieces of wood.

Prep the night before. Let it air dry in your fridge. If you can’t, 20 mins in the freezer will dry out the skin nicely. Drying the skin will let it brown without a searing step.

dry brine the meat. Focus on using diamond crystal salt. Most spices don’t survive and most blends have a lot of salt. If you salt and use a blend, it can over salt. If you use a spice blend with salt, I add half my normal salt. I like a nice pepper crust on beef. Pork seasons well with a mix of brown sugar, cumin, mustard, garlic in with the spice.

Since you have 3 different meats, get a meat temp probe so you can enjoy yourself. That’s a lot to track.

give yourself time. If you are cooking to 195-203. 165 to finish takes forever. If you wrap it, your bark will mush a little. I like to just let it run.  Don’t slice your meat until it gets down under 145 or it shreds.

be flexible with your eating time. Eat it when it’s good.

Happened before - starters…

Happened before - starters always only played 1-2 years. Difference is, you don’t know who will take the chairs when the music stops.
Once you realize you have to learn a new team — does it really matter that they come as free agents or draft picks?

Michigan has been heavily reliant on transfers for 4/5 years now (remember Duncan Robinson?) They are just getting better transfers now than recruits. Tho, I will say that getting 4 of 5 starters in the portal is a bit insane.

Most underrated return of…

Most underrated return of the group. Needed a big strong side edge / 3 technique and after losing Rooks there wasn’t an heir apparent.

Judge a man by his actions…

Judge a man by his actions like the public Denver interview. Not a lot of college coaches so publicly leverage their university into a deal… that said the top guys didn’t have to. He deserves the deal but it did not have to get this public. I 80% put this on Warde for not locking him up earlier and getting in his craw, but JH has not shown that he loves UM in 2023. Imagine telling your wife:

”I love you honey, and I fully intend to stay with you but NO man knows the future!”

Because he’ll get 300+…

Because he’ll get 300+ carries at Michigan for a playoff team. And Southern Miss is irrelevant.

Bowman isn’t the same after his injuries. He’s got a wet noodle in an offense where you need an arm (or legs.) Gotta develop Warren if you want a chance in a rivalry game. Would be nice if the Orji package can become a real offense if we need it to be.

UCLA is not a playoff…

UCLA is not a playoff contender, nor do they seem serious about being one in football. This about financing their dept. USC probably knows that when they have it going they will beat anyone, and in LA, anything short of that doesn’t matter for attendance.

For most knowledge workers,…

For most knowledge workers, more time doesn’t mean more output. Being tired and burned out, you can often do more damage than good. You have to bring your best self to every interaction in a zoom bubble.

Run a marathon not a sprint. Get the job done really well, keep yourself healthy and make your life great. Once you get to a ‘career level role’, you’ll learn that promotions happen slowly and are more driven by your potential for impact and business need/opportunity than a ‘gold star’ for doing your current job. once we started creating balance, people started to get to a new normal post pandemic. If you have extra time, invest in your skills, your aptitude, your relationships and your health. Your employer will thank you.

Quiet quitting is a crappy term frankly, because the alternative is quitting yourself  and lighting your company on fire in the process.

IMO pass rush depth is an…

IMO pass rush depth is an attribute of winning teams. One thing we underestimated last year was that Hutch was so strong and conditioned he last 10+ play drives, and Ojabo didn’t play every down. A big reason MSU succeeded was that our dominant front and pass rush waned inside our own 50. Getting a fresh and explosive rusher to come in on the 6th or 8th play of the drive is HUGE. The starters can truly take effort and motor to 100, and know that the next guy up will do it. I think this is a hidden ingredient Alabama had with their depth. When they don’t get off the field, they can still squeeze you every down like a python because the D line keeps coming.

3.5 on the money. All against cupcakes w bad IOL and QBs holding the ball. He’ll get serious and collapse the pocket against good teams, instead of attacking half the shoulder with a move.

We didn’t meet the standard…

We didn’t meet the standard this year. Average big ten team. Defense, three pt shooting and backcourt play ( see turnover to assist stats) was not a top 16 formula, and that’s the standard for a successful season now - sweet 16. The one place I saw improvement was in rebounding and free throw shooting, which gave us a few extra fg attempts and the ability to stay in a lot of games.

I hope this helps Brian, and if it doesn’t, hopefully it’s a wake up call to find help. You’ve given me decades of content asking for nothing in return. I hope you find joy again soon.

I thought the same. Felt…

I thought the same. Felt like we overly specialized at will and mike considering we’re playing in nickel 90% of the game. I’d like them to play the two best guys in the middle.

Once NHG and Colson played together our run fits we’re 10x better on the last two series. Mullings really struggled to call the D, and was just plain bad in run defense in the 4th quarter. There was one off tackle shotgun draw where he played pass first and got blocked by a WR for a 15 yard gain. If MacD was in the booth he would’ve been pulled much sooner.

I’d like Barrett to play out there in coverage downs. He’s still a playmaker and he’s fast. 220 lb linebackers are just fine against spread offenses. Need senior leadership out there when confidence is shaken.

He’s a scholly senior who…

He’s a scholly senior who can’t get pt against Akron up 30. That sucks.

Also, didn’t Joe Milton basically do this, but we let him stay on the field and on the team? ‘Hang 50’?

Bowman will play an…

Bowman will play an important game or 2 when Cade gets hurt. Literally happens every season at UM even when we send 3 OL to the NFL. So yeah. Guy needed and there can only be one person as uniquely not self aware of his problems as john okorn…right?

remember UM vs Nebraska when we went from Denard to Russ Bellamy in 2011. Twas no bueno.

I’m sick of the negativity…

I’m sick of the negativity. They just won the game from down 17! Let us have some joy instead of pushing delusional expectations. Zero teams would be top 25 teams losing 9 NFL-caliber, starting  upper class men to injury. Not OSU, not Clemson, not even Alabama. If you said this would happen before, I’d expect a 4-4 B1G season.
I have seen player-led leadership develop. My junior year high school team went 1-10, but we all played two ways. Won the state title the next year. I played D3 college. 4-4 with similar injuries, but freshmen and sophomores played. Won our league senior year - first championship in 20 years. Championship teams come from the players rising to reveal their talent and use their skill. Not the analytical mind — the instinctual mind letting loose. We need to let the players become winners, and become leaders on the field when 9 of your best players are out. The winged helmet, stadium and money don’t entitle us to anything between the lines.

Tommy Amaker was all those things but his system set back offense 40 years.

I love the Xs and Os focus on this site, and Beilein was a ‘system guy’ that evolved with better personnel. Can you please write an informative post  about Juwan’s system, Xs and Os and his offense? I’m curious as to his actual coaching style - is he a Spoelstra disciple? What does he do for the Heat? Did he develop any specific players for the Heat?

This was a valuable team…

This was a valuable team building experience that we didn’t need to pay for with a loss. The twitter video in the tunnel shows what playing for each other means. They dug deep and experienced the joy after. This team needs to find consistency to be great, but you can’t buy those teaching moments with 4 hr practices or trips to Paris. We will keep building and getting better.

My only criticism is that we need to create more possessions when we’re down by multiple scores. We seem to be letting opponents grind us into short games when we’re down. At Notre Dame, we ran out of time. At Northwestern we had a near perfect 2nd half and still only won by 3. Touchdowns would have helped, but I think we only punted twice in the second half.
